Middle Belt youths withdraw from hunger protest

0

The Middle Belt youths have announced their withdrawal from the proposed nationwide hunger protest.

This is as the youths, under the North Central Youth Council, urged the Federal Government to address the rising cost of living in the country.

The protest, scheduled to be held from August 1 to 10, is in response to the hardship experienced by citizens in the country.

Addressing journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, the group’s National President, Sunday Asuku, said the protest could not solve the problems confronting the country.

Although he admitted that times are hard in the country, he urged all Nigerians to support the government to succeed.

He said, “In lieu of the aforementioned, the leadership of North Central Youth Council hereby dissociates and distances itself from the purported national protest as it doesn’t promise to solve in any way the artificial problems facing us as a country.

“As much as we fully agree that the country is passing through hard times, our unity and support for the government to succeed should be concerted while we keep working, praying and hoping for a better Nigeria.

“Rome, they say, was not built in a day; no right-thinking man would expect a decadence of over 24 years to be fixed in less than two years. This is impossible.”

Asuku urged youths from the region not to join the protests, stating that the country was in a fragile period.

He said, “All Indigenous youths from the North Central region of Nigeria is by this press briefing advised and warned not to join any protest in the name of hunger, insecurity or whatsoever, especially at this fragile period when the atmosphere is tensed, any action capable of undermining our peaceful coexistence as a country should be outrightly and vehemently rejected..”

He, however, appealed to the government to address the rising cost of living in the country.

Asuku said, “While we see, feel and understand the government’s efforts to stabilize the dwindling economy, we also appeal passionately that they put in more measures capable of addressing the rising costs of living.

“We shall continue to monitor heads of MDAs, Ministries, Agencies, etc, to ensure they are not sabotaging the frantic efforts of the government for their gains. The leadership of North Central Youth Council shall not hesitate to expose them forthwith.”

Police van torched, officers injured in UK after fatal stabbings

0

Disorder erupted Tuesday night outside a mosque in Southport, UK, following a knife attack that left three girls dead in the Merseyside town.

A police van was set on fire, and officers were injured during the chaos.

A group of masked men in hoodies clashed with officers, chanting “English till I die” before violence ensued.

Police suspect the men are affiliated with the far-right English Defence League.

The disorder comes after the Home Secretary Yvette Cooper urged social media users not to spread “false information” about Monday’s attack or the suspect online.

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested for the stabbings at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event. Police have not confirmed his identity due to his age but have said he was born in the UK.

There is no suggestion he is a Muslim.

Merseyside Police has said a large group of people began throwing objects at the mosque on St Luke’s Road at around 7.45 pm this evening.

Officers later put on helmets and riot gear as bottles and wheelie bins were thrown at them.

A police officer suffered a broken nose, others have minor injuries and one of the force’s vans was set on fire.

The force said additional patrols were later sent to the scene including a dog unit.

Assistant Chief Constable Alex Goss said that many of the people involved in tonight’s violence do not live in Merseyside or care about the people who live in the county, says Sky News.

He added, “There has been much speculation and hypothesis around the status of a 17-year-old male who is currently in police custody and some individuals are using this to bring violence and disorder to our streets.

“We have already said that the person arrested was born in the UK and speculation helps nobody at this time.

“Our officers should not have to face this, but we will be there tonight to ensure the safety of the local community who have suffered enough, and will arrest those involved in criminal behaviour.”

The situation outside the mosque appeared to have calmed down as dark descended, with numbers on the street having thinned.

Ms Cooper said it was “appalling” police officers in Southport were facing attacks from “thugs on the streets who have no respect for a grieving community”, adding: “It’s a total disgrace”.

Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said, “I am incredibly proud of my officers and staff who have worked so hard to save the lives of children, investigate the horrific incident from yesterday, working with partners to provide reassurance to our communities and now they are facing this level of violence from these thugs.”

Police were called to a premises on Hart Street in Southport shortly before midday on Monday after 11 children and two adults were stabbed.

Three of the children later died and have been named as six-year-old Bebe King, seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, and nine-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar.

They are also confined to the Peace Park in the Ketu area of the state.

Pedro had in his application said he has been privy to notices by different interests on the protest and stressed the need to protect the infrastructure of the state and prevent irreparable loss of lives and properties as witnessed during the October 2020 #ENDSARS protest in the state.
He argued that the move was to prevent the demonstration from being hijacked by hoodlums who were prepared to breach law and order and cause destruction in different parts of the under the guise of protest.
In his ruling, the judge held that the protest slated to take place from August 1 to 10 should only be held within the approved locations and between 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., pending compliance with the “pre-action protocol by the claimant.”

The event was held at OYSADA Warehouse, Fertilizer Store, Laniya, Ojongbodu area in Oyo town.

While declaring it open, the state Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, described the event as a testament of Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration’s resolve to increase food production and boost the economy of the state.

He said the gesture would improve crop productivity, enhance food security and increase the income of our rural farmers, adding that the state government is committed to boosting agricultural productivity and positioning farmers for sustainable growth and prosperity.

“The administration is aware of the challenges of insecurity and soaring prices of agricultural production inputs faced by farmers in this state, and as a result given approval to the requests by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development through Sustainable Action for Economic Reform to procure and distribute various agricultural input at the beginning of this season.

“The inputs include tonnes of maize seed, Soybean seed, Knapsack sprayers, agro-chemicals to build the resilience of farmers against economic shocks,” he said.

US passes major child safety bills

0

The US Senate passed a sweeping social media safety package Tuesday that would force tech companies to do more to protect children – the first major legislation targeting Silicon Valley in a generation.

Social media giants like Meta and X have been confronting a torrent of political anger for not putting in guardrails to thwart online dangers for children, including from sexual predators and teen suicide.

A rare sign of cross-party unity in an increasingly rancorous election year, the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) and the Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0) were passed in an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote with just three dissenters.

But the bills face an uncertain path through the House of Representatives, where Republican Speaker Mike Johnson has spoken broadly in favor of the package but has not scheduled a vote.

“Today is a momentous day. The Senate keeps its promise to every parent who has lost a child because of the risks of social media,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement.

While there is widespread agreement in a politically divided Congress on curbing the negative impacts of social media, there has never been a united path on how to go about doing so.

The legislation was drawn up in consultation with parents of teens who had been bullied or sexually exploited but has been opposed by some free speech groups worried it could lead to censorship.

– ‘Duty of care’ –

House members are on their summer recess and will almost certainly be focusing on averting a looming government shutdown when they return in September.

But Schumer called on the lower chamber to pass the bills immediately on its return, urging lawmakers to “seize the opportunity to send them to the president’s desk.”

KOSA would establish a “duty of care” obligation on the online platforms that would demand special provisions be put in place to shield minors from toxic content.

Supported by Microsoft, X and Snap, the company that owns Snapchat, the legislation would require companies to give users a dedicated page to report harmful content — including sexual exploitation, online bullying, the promotion of suicide and eating disorders.

In January, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg gave a public apology to the families of victims at the Senate Judiciary Committee as hostile lawmakers grilled tech CEOs over the dangers that children face on social media.

“I’m sorry for everything you have all been through,” he said. “No one should go through the things that your families have suffered.”

– Censorship fears –

Seven LGBTQ advocacy groups initially opposed to the bill changed their position after changes they said mitigated concerns that teens would be limited in accessing information about gender identity, sexuality and reproductive health.

But free speech groups including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have argued the definition of harm is too broad and that it could lead to censorship.

“KOSA compounds nationwide attacks on young peoples’ right to learn and access information, on and offline,” said Jenna Leventoff, senior policy counsel at the ACLU.

Evan Greer, director of Fight for the Future, told reporters that KOSA was “a blank check for censorship of any piece of content that an administration could claim is harmful to kids.”

COPPA 2.0 would beef up legislation passed in 1998, in the earlier days of the internet.

It would require privacy standards for Americans aged under 17 and outlaw online advertising targeted at children and teens – requiring companies to allow users to delete personal information.

“Too many kids experience relentless promotion of suicide or substance abuse material. Too many kids have their personal data collected and then used nefariously,” Schumer said.

“With studies showing that kids today spend more time on social media than ever before, now is the moment to pass KOSA, pass COPPA, and instill guardrails that protect kids from these risks.”

FCT: Government will not condone mayhem – Wike warns protesters

0

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has warned that government will not fold its hands and watch people cause mayhem.
Wike said this ahead of the nationwide protest slated to happen on August 1, 2024.
He gave the warning while inspecting the ongoing construction of the 25-kilometre Yebu Kwaita Road and the 11-kilometre Yangoji-Sukuku Ebo Road, both in the Kwali Area Council of the FCT.
Addressing newsmen during the inspection visit, Wike expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work on the road projects and assured that they would be completed by December this year.
Wike also stated that his frequent visits to project sites in the FCT were to showcase to Nigerians that the FCT is working, adding that there was no need for protests in the FCT.
He avowed that government acknowledges the challenges in the country and commended FCT residents for opting out of the planned protests and embracing the option of dialogue.
He said: “If the FCT is working, why are you telling the residents to come and protest? We quite appreciate the level of hunger but we have said it is better for us to sit down and talk about it than to give room for hooligans to perpetrate crimes against innocent Nigerians.
“No right-thinking government will fold its arms and allow people to cause mayhem, destroy properties, and then we go back to square one.”
Speaking further on the impact of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the FCT: “I have said before that the Renewed Hope Agenda is not just for the city. It’s also for rural areas. Where we are coming from now, you can see it is 25 kilometres and look at how happy the people are. That is the essence of renewed hope, and that is why we are saying that people should be patient with the government.
“While the government is doing everything to reduce the level of hunger, the government is also providing basic infrastructure that will improve the economy of our country.”
