Why FG hasn’t announced centres for sale of rice

    0

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said that although the bags of rice to be sold by the Federal Government for N40,000 were available, sale centres cannot be announced for fear of being hijacked and hoarded by “people who have money”.

The minister stated this while fielding questions from journalists, following a press briefing at the Radio House in Abuja, on Wednesday.

Recall that the Federal Government through the minister on Monday, said it had created centres across the country where Nigerians could purchase 50kg bags of rice for N40,000.

Idris said the initiative was one of several initiatives by the Tinubu administration, to ease living conditions for citizens.

However, speaking on Wednesday, the minister said the bags were in the process of being distributed to states.

He added that the locations of the sale centres across the country could not be announced for security reasons, and to ensure that those for whom the intervention was intended would get the rice.

“It’s in the process of distribution to the various states.

“Sometimes, it is difficult to mention the routes and the time for security reasons.

“But the rice is already available, it is going to be sold at N40,000.

“The rice is already available, I can confirm that it is going to be sold at various points around the country.

“Care is being taken so that it would not be hijacked by people who have money. If we put it out there, they would go there and hoard it; those for whom this rice is intended will not now get the rice”, he said.

Earlier, Idris enumerated efforts by the Tinubu-led administration, including the recently signed National Education Loan Fund, which he said was targeted at two million students and had already received 120,000 applications, as well as the FG’s N110bn Nigerian Youth Investment Fund which he said would run for the next two years.

Opposition lawmakers stage walkout as Reps vote to raise ‘Ways and Means’ borrowing

    0

Some opposition lawmakers in the House of Representatives staged a walkout from the Green Chamber on Wednesday over the increment of the controversial Central Bank of Nigeria ways and means lending to the Federal Government.
The protest happened during the debate on the amendment of Section 38 of the CBN Act to increase the borrowing level from 5 per cent to 10 per cent.
The lawmakers want the threshold to be reduced from the current 5 per cent to 2 per cent.
It would be recalled that former President Muhammadu Buhari was criticized for taking over N23 trillion from the CBN under the Ways and Means policy, which threw the country into debt crisis.
During the debate, Kingsley Chinda, the Minority Leader, said instead of increasing the threshold, it should be decreased.
However, two members of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Ayokunle Isiaka and Ahmed Wase, moved that the threshold should be kept at 10 per cent.
Wase later moved an amendment and it was adopted by the House following a voice vote.
Angered by the voice vote, some lawmakers staged a walkout in protest.

Security on high alert as Osun prepares for potential protests

    0

In a preemptive move aimed at maintaining public order, security operatives in Osun State on Wednesday, embarked on a show of force.
The deployment of armed personnel from the police, army, and other security agencies has raised eyebrows and sparked concerns about the potential for civil unrest.
The motorcade which consisted of Soldiers, Police, Civil Defence Corps and DSS operatives move around major streets in Osogbo heavily armed.
Speaking on the roadshow, Osun Police command spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola said the combined security operatives were on a show of strength in preparation for the August one rally to deter criminal elements from hijacking the protest.
“Yes, the team is on a show of strength across the state capital to serve as a warning for unscrupulous elements who may want to infiltrate tomorrow’s protest to hijack it.

“We are sending a signal that there is no room for criminals to hijack the protest. The protest would have protection and other citizens would be adequately protected as well”, she said.
While the official stance is that the operation is a deterrent against criminal elements who might exploit any planned protests, the heavy-handed approach has not been without criticism. Civil liberty advocates have raised alarms about the potential for human rights abuses and the chilling effect such displays can have on freedom of expression.
The heightened security posture comes amid growing tensions in the country, with calls for protests over various socio-economic issues. The government’s decision to deploy security forces in such a visible manner suggests a deep-seated apprehension about the potential for large-scale demonstrations.

Akume made the call on Wednesday at a press briefing in Abuja, hours ahead of the planned protest.

“For the avoidance of doubts, the government of President Tinubu recognizes the right to peaceful protest but circumspection and vigilance should be our watchwords.

Rowdy session as Reps raise ways and means to 10%

    0

It was a rowdy scene at the emergency plenary session called by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, on Wednesday.

The debate centred on a bill seeking to raise the Ways and Means cash advances from the Central Bank of Nigeria from five per cent to 10 per cent.

This followed the consideration of “A Bill for an Act to amend the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007 to increase the Central Bank of Nigeria’s total advance to the Federal Government from five per cent to a maximum of 15 per cent and for other related matters.”

Members elected on the platform of seven opposition parties staged a walkout during plenary after an amendment by the minority leader, Kingsley Chinda, to reduce the Ways and Means to two per cent was rejected.

Ways and Means refers to the money that the CBN lends to the Federal Government to augment spending based on the timing of revenue generation.

The existing law provides that the advance by the apex bank must not exceed five per cent of the previous year’s revenue of the Federal Government.

Lawmakers who voted in support of the increase from five to 10 per cent included Abubakar Yalleman (APC, Jigawa), Saidu Abdullahi (APC, Niger), and Ibrahim Wase (APC, Plateau), among others.

When the bill was put to a voice vote by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the plenary session, lawmakers voted against the proposed percentage.

However, Kalu ruled in favour of the ayes, prompting a walkout by opposition lawmakers.

Hunger Protest: FG has given rice, fertilizers to your governor, minister tells residents of Taraba

    0

Uba Maigari, the Minister of State for Steel Development, has outlined recent federal government actions aimed at alleviating the economic hardship faced by Nigerians.
During a town hall meeting with stakeholders in Jalingo, Taraba State, Maigari highlighted the distribution of rice and fertilizers to state governors and the recent approval of a new minimum wage as key measures.
Maigari stated, “The president directed the release of rice and fertilizers in large quantities directly to state governors, whether they are PDP, APC, or APGA. I think you should, as journalists and professionals, do your job by asking state governors, starting from our brother here. He has taken delivery of fertilizers the federal government sent to governors, and there is also rice delivered to governors across the country.”
He added, “These are some of the remedial measures, including the new minimum wage which has just been signed into law, before the long-term economic programmes and policies of government begin to benefit all. We are not happy with food shortages, which is why the FG has taken these measures.”

Maigari also urged Taraba youths and supporters of the upcoming protest to remain focused and avoid being manipulated by divisive forces. “As a government, we are not against protest because we are democrats, but we are appealing that the youths should be patient and avoid being used by proponents of division.”
Dr. Aminu Jauro, Chairman of the Taraba State ALGON, also called on residents to avoid participating in the protest. He praised Governor Agbu Kefas for his efforts, including free basic and secondary education, affordable tertiary education, and the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage.
Jauro remarked, “The proposed protest might undermine these ongoing efforts and paint a picture of disunity at a time when solidarity and support are crucial. I urge the youths, women, clubs, and associations within Jalingo local government to acknowledge and support the positive strides of His Excellency, the Executive Governor, by refraining from participating in the scheduled protest. Let us instead come together to engage in constructive dialogue, work collaboratively, and support the continuous progress of our state.”
