Lagos Won’t allow another #EndSARS, Sanwo-Olu warns

0

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has stated that the state will not allow the 2020 #EndSARS protest to repeat itself.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed this while appealing to the anti-hunger protest organisers who have stood their ground to demonstrate the economic hardship faced by Nigerians since the beginning of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In an address to Lagosians on Wednesday, the governor noted that the 10-day protest cannot achieve what economic reforms can in weeks and months while citing the destruction of valuables as losses the state is still counting.

He said, “Reflecting on the tragic events of the EndSARS protest in 2020, it began peacefully but was later hijacked, resulting in immense destruction and loss.

“We will NOT allow history to repeat itself. During the protests, we saw the destruction of valuable properties and institutions: Lagos High Court, 45 police stations, 12 Local Government offices, 7 Fire Stations, and the Forensic Centre, among others.

“The City Hall, Nigeria Ports Authority headquarters, and traditional rulers’ palaces were also destroyed.

“Malls, shops, offices, and hundreds of brand-new BRT buses were lost. Such devastation only sets us back economically and socially.”

Sanwo-Olu admitted that there were challenges in the country but that the Federal Government is putting in significant efforts to address them and alleviate Nigerians’ pain.

“For weeks, we’ve faced the prospect of protests aimed at ending what some call ‘bad government’. While the intentions may be noble, some narratives suggesting it’s a means to change the government by non-constitutional means are troubling.

“Is a protest the catalyst for progress we need now? Will it ensure our challenges vanish in ten days? Will it lower food prices or inspire economic growth? I strongly believe it won’t. Instead, it could undo the modest gains we’ve made,” he admonished.

He further highlighted minimum wage, student loans, and local government autonomy, among others, as some of the achievements the President has made this week.

“This week, President Tinubu signed a new minimum wage into law. Student loans are being disbursed to ease financial burdens, and local governments now have financial autonomy to enhance governance efficiency.

“The foreign exchange crisis is being creatively tackled. The sale of crude oil to local refineries in Naira will save $7.9 billion annually and strengthen our currency. The Presidential Initiative on CNG is also attracting private investments.

“We need patience for the benefits of these economic reforms to blossom. Protests can’t achieve in days what economic reforms can in weeks and months. Our nation, under President Tinubu’s courageous leadership, is on the right path,” he added.

He also reeled out EKOCARES , reduction in transport costs, free medical care, and increased bursaries and scholarships for Lagos students as some of the things his administration is doing to cushion the effect of inflation in the country.

The governor, however, appealed to the protesters to converge at the police-approved protest venues — Gani Fawehinmi Park and Peace Park — so as to avoid chaos.

“To ensure safe and peaceful expression, the Police have designated Gani Fawehinmi Park and Peace Park for protests. These locations will be secured to protect our citizens and prevent chaos.”

Suspend crude-for-loan deal, Reps tell NNPCL

The House of Representatives Special Joint Committee investigating factors working against the petroleum sector has directed the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to halt what it called the mortgage of Nigeria’s future crude oil until it concludes its assignment.

Recall that the committee chaired by the lawmaker representing Ideato South/Ideato North Federal Constituency, Imo State, Ikenga Ugochinyere, commenced its probe of shady deals in the sector last week.

The committee’s directive followed reports that NNPCL is planning to borrow an additional $2bn in crude oil-backed loans from international creditors to boost its financial inflow.

The Group Chief Executive Officer of the NNPC, Mele Kyari, according to the panel, reportedly stated that the national oil company is in discussions with international creditors to raise an oil-backed credit facility.

This was a sequel to recent findings that the national oil company is struggling to pay international oil traders a backlog of $6bn amid subsidy removal.

In a statement issued by Ugochinyere on Wednesday, the company urged the NNPCL not to undermine the forensic investigation by the House of Representatives with another fresh loan.

It warned that the move if allowed, will further worsen the situation of of things, starve the refineries of feedstock, weaken revenue generation and create room for waste of future revenue.

The statement reads, “The citizens were excited on the recent news of President Tinubu’s intervention for crude supply to local refineries in naira and the committee has received intel of plans to mortgage future crude revenue and oil for another loan at a time the nation is struggling.

“This is preemptive of the committee’s work and we want to want to announce the halt of this fresh move and for the state oil company to brief the parliament. The revenue being mortgaged are sovereign wealth of the people and the parliament has a duty as the watchdog of the commonwealth to step in. The NNPCL today is owned by FG and Nigerians, hence, its actions must not hurt their shareholders who we lawmakers represent.

“We gathered you here today on a shocking development and alleged move by the leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to mortgage once again our future crude oil assets and revenues for alleged mere administrative purposes.

“As the Chairmen of the joint investigative Committees on Petroleum Resources Midstream and Downstream, it’s our duty to act in the best interest of the citizens and ensure that the downstream and midstream sectors are protected.”

He noted that the Committee in its ongoing investigation is probing allegations of non-remittance to federation accounts and non-availability of crude to domestic refineries.

The panel warned the oil company not to work against the recent directive of the Federal Government on the need to protect local refineries.

The statement further read, “We are calling on NNPCL to halt further plans to borrow more loan with crude oil, as the move will sabotage the President’s deal for domestic crude supply.

“In August 2023, following the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of the forex market which significantly weakened the naira, the Federal Government through the NNPCL secured a $3.3 billion loan from Afrexim bank to shore up liquidity in the market.

“Mele Kyari had explained then that the loan would shore up the foreign exchange reserve and provide a more urgent solution to the country’s FX challenges.

“The loan is said to be paid with crude oil set at $65 per barrel and had earmarked around 90,000 barrels for the process. We are urging the NNPCL not to undermine the forensic investigation by the House of Representatives into crude oil supply with another fresh loan, as the move is a threat to local refinery.”

Protest: Tinubu has done a lot for Niger Delta – Minister Momoh appeals to youths

0

Amidst the controversies surrounding a nationwide protest billed to commence on August 1, the Minister of Niger Delta Development, Abubakar Momoh, has said youths in the region should take it upon themselves to have a cursory assessment of the Tinubu administration before embarking on any protest.
He said when they consider the impact of projects so far executed in the region, they will lack the enthusiasm to go on mass protests.
The Minister, while interacting with State House correspondents on Wednesday, said that there is nobody in the country, including the President, who would say that protesting is a sin, but the consequences of the action may not be good for economic development.
According to Momoh, the president has taken it upon himself to complete some abandoned projects in the region which many citizens are feigning ignorance of.
His words: “We are very lucky to have the person of President Ahmed Tinubu, who is deeply committed towards the overall development of the country, irrespective of the area.
“We know that a number of projects are going on in this country, projects that were never attempted by previous administrations, despite the fact that there is a lean resource in government now. I am surprised and I wonder if you see what is going on in this administration.
“What we have observed is that it appears the majority of Nigerians, and particularly the youths, are not very conversant with a number of programmes put in place to alleviate the suffering of the youths of this very country.
“To start from my end in the Niger Delta Region, I think the President has done a lot for which I don’t think any person who is from the Niger Delta area will deem it necessary to come out and say he’s protesting against bad governance.
“The number of projects that have been executed in the South-South region and particularly the Niger Delta region within this one year cannot be compared with what has happened previously in the last four years. For instance, recently, you watched us on the screen commissioning projects in the Niger Delta area.”
He said there are quite several welfare programmes that are ongoing in the region and that the ministry has embarked on an empowerment and welfare programme for the first time in its history.
“Today, a number of women and youths have benefited reasonably, and today too, Mr President has also graciously approved the release of funds to address the flooded area of the Niger Delta and also palliatives for the people of the Niger Delta.
“In addition to what he has done for the state government, you are aware that a number of relief materials have been sent through various state governors to the people of Nigeria,” he said.
Buttressing his position, Momoh said: “On the issue of protest, I don’t think there is anybody, including the President of this country, who would think protesting is a sin, but what we are saying is that in the name of protest, do not come and cause mayhem or destroy the properties of innocent citizens; do not come and cause mayhem because the freedom you have to protest has a limit. You do not have the freedom to protest and cause destruction.
“So the youths, the country is your own, and the future is your own. If you destroy what you will live upon in the future, then it becomes a serious problem.
“I will appeal to the youth of this country to take advantage of the numerous youth programmes initiated by this government.”

First Lady urges Nigerians to reconsider protest

    0

Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, on Wednesday, urged Nigerians to reconsider protests scheduled for August 1-10, saying the current administration is working round the clock to make the country work.

Mrs Tinubu, who said the country is still grappling with the aftershocks of the #EndSARS protests of 2020, asked youths to be proactive and creative to leverage the opportunities in Nigeria.

“But I pray that they (protesters) would reconsider and don’t make life difficult for those who are still having quite a challenging life,” the First Lady said when she met with Governors’ Wives at the quarterly meeting of the Renewed Hope Initiative at the State House, Abuja.

The meeting highlighted upcoming activities and frontiers of collaboration with the relevant government ministries, departments, and agencies.

Her appeal came hours before the nationwide protests against the rising cost of living, slated for August 1 – 10, 2024. The protest, tagged #EndBadGovernance, has gained traction on social media and is scheduled to occur in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

However, the First Lady called for patience, asking protest organisers to reconsider their stance.

“I will appeal to them to be patient. We didn’t come here playing. We came here to work because I know we will leave this place one day, and I want to go to a Nigeria that will not be a burden to me.

“I’ll be much older, and I want to make sure that I rest in a very conducive and nice atmosphere. And that’s what we’re doing. They (protesters) shouldn’t obstruct all those people who depend on their daily living. So I appeal to them and I pray they’ll see reasons.

“If they’re trying to be disruptive, then it is left between them and the law…What people don’t realise is that when we’re drumming for things (protests) like this, we don’t know the backlash and what will happen after,” She said.

Mrs Tinubu argued that Nigeria had gained considerable respect in the community of nations, as evidenced by the growing interest of international partners in legitimate business opportunities in Nigeria.

Therefore, she urged the youth to be proactive and innovative in seizing these opportunities, highlighting the importance of creativity and engagement in driving economic growth.

“This government has been working day and night to make sure that this country is put back on its feet. What Nigerians don’t know is that…you see, the respect we have now as Nigerians in the international community is higher than what we’ve had in the past.

“People want to do business with Nigeria legitimately now because they know all the cards are on the table. And that will create jobs. So, our youth should try to engage themselves, be creative, and do more.

“So everybody has to be creative, our youth have to be seen doing something, nobody’s going even to encourage and put money into the pocket of somebody who is not doing anything,” she said.

Mrs Tinubu highlighted the entrepreneurial spirit of Nigerians displayed during the COVID-19 pandemic, saying, “There are so many opportunities in Nigeria. People made lots of money during COVID just by making sanitisers, creating different things that people could use at that time.”

“The opportunities are there. It is not what it used to be. People have to reach out. And these are things that we’ve done before,” she added.

The First Lady also called for increased youth involvement in agriculture as part of the Renewed Hope Initiative.

She emphasised the importance of cultivating a culture of farming among young Nigerians, stating, “You can grow what you eat. We’re taking this to the young people now so they can embrace this culture.”

Sharing her personal connection to gardening, Mrs Tinubu recollected her childhood experiences with school farms and her love for fresh scent leaves and lemongrass.

“Why do I want to do the Young Farmers Club? It is about instilling these values early,” she explained.

To support small businesses, the First Lady said her pet project, RHI, has given a grant of N50,000 to petty traders, stating, “It’s not a loan; it is just to help small businesses.”

The First Lady outlined the upcoming activities and collaborations of the Renewed Hope Initiative across various sectors.

She thanked the governors’ wives’ contributions to RHI’s success in their respective states, emphasising that their dedication and hard work have been instrumental.

Mrs. Tinubu also highlighted RHI’s collaborations with government agencies and international organisations in the areas of education, health, agriculture, and economic empowerment.

These partnerships include working with the Federal Ministries of Education, Health, and Agriculture, as well as agencies like UBEC, TETFUND, NPHCDA, and AUDA-NEPAD.

She also announced the imminent unveiling of 200 awardees under the AUDA-NEPAD/RHI Scholarship Programme and the launch of the RHI Women Economic Empowerment Programme for Petty Traders, which will provide N50,000 grants to 1,000 women in each state and the FCT.

Other initiatives discussed include the One Nigeria Unity Fabric competition, where a winner has emerged and production of the winning design into fabrics has begun in earnest with textile manufacturers in Kano and Lagos.

At the meeting, the First Lady led the Governors’ wives to observe a minute of silence in honour of the late music icon, Onyeka Onwenu, who passed away late Tuesday.

Afenifere hails FG for offering rice at lower price

    0

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, on Wednesday, commended the Federal Government for rolling out N50kg bags of rice to be sold for N40,000, lower than the current N70,000 market rate.

The Federal Government announced the cheaper rice on Monday as part of measures to forestall the planned hunger protest scheduled to start on Thursday, August 1, 2024.

In a statement on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, Afenifere reiterated its call for the organisers of the protest to call it off in the interest of peace.

The organisation commended the President Bola Tinubu-led administration, saying, “This will entail the resuscitation of the defunct commodity boards that would ensure the availability, distribution and sales of the commodities in various parts of the country. Incidentally, the government has expressed readiness to do this going by the disclosure of Vice President Kashim Shettima who announced the plan of the government to set up commodity boards to regulate the soaring prices of food in the country.

“Although the reason for the delay in getting the boards to be set up since then may not be immediately known, the government should use the opportunity of bringing commodities into the public space to have the boards set up.

“Members of the boards must be people within the vicinity of where the commodities are to be distributed and marketed so that the people there would be their watchdogs. Doing so would also remove the suspicion of the government wanting to impose on the people.

“You will recall that the government had not only begun the distribution of 20 trucks of rice per state, it has also directed that a bag be sold at N40,000 instead of above N70,000 at which it is being sold currently. Reports even have it that 10 additional trucks have been dispatched making it a total of 30 trucks per state.

“Some states such as Katsina, Bayelsa, etc. have acknowledged the receipt of the commodity just as some of them have even begun its distribution. Also, given steps being taken by the government to address identified problems in the country, particularly about food, Afenifere reiterates its earlier call on those behind a nationwide, ten-days-long protest to shelve it.”

He urged Tinubu to urgently ease the trauma of farmers in the country through, among others, transparent utilisation of the N2m package recently approved on the Accelerated Stabilisation and Advancement Plan of which agriculture is a key component as put forward by the Presidential Economic Coordination Council.

BREAKING: Nationwide protest: Police deactivate explosive device in Lagos

    0

A few hours before the commencement of the anti-government protest, the Lagos State Police Command said its anti-bomb squad had deactivated an improvised explosive device.
It was deactivated in the Ikeja area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the development to TVN.
He was, however, unable to give details of the development at the time of filing this report.
TVN reports that Nigerian youths, irked by the prevailing economic hardship in the country, scheduled a 10-day nationwide protest to commence on Thursday, August 1. Security agencies, however, had issued security alerts, urging the organisers of the protest to shelve the plan.
When contacted about the deactivation of the explosive device, Hundenyin simply said, “Yes, it happened today.”

NADECO USA asks international community to monitor hunger protest

    0

Ahead of the August 1 nationwide protest against economic hardship, the United States of America chapter of the National Democratic Coalition has called on the international community to closely monitor the protest to ensure the safety of every Nigerian partaking in it.

NADECO USA chapter said it is wrong for the government to criminalise protests by targeting its organisers.

The President of NADECO USA, Dr Lloyd Ukwu, made the call during a news briefing in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital on Wednesday.

Ukwu warned that using force or intimidation to quell the protest would be a violation of democratic principles and a serious threat to fundamental rights.

He noted that for several years, Nigerian leaders have deployed tribalism, ethnicity and religion to divide the the citizenry in a bid to suppress popular demands.

He said the body supports the planned peaceful protest as long as the participants confine themselves within the law.

Ukwu explained that freedom of expression is a fundamental human right under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights inherent to all individuals irrespective of ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion and social status.

To that extent, he said protests are a catalyst to change, to reshape agendas and to spark positive debate.

He said, “Today marks a crucial juncture in Nigeria’s political history and development. It is with utmost concern and unwavering resolve that I speak on behalf of NADECO USA regarding the forthcoming protest by the Nigerian people, dubbed ‘End Bad Governance In Nigeria.’

“NADECO USA unequivocally endorse and support the planned peaceful protest, provided that it adheres to non-violence principles.

“Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, inherent to all individuals irrespective of ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion or social status.

“Protests are age-long ways for citizens to express themselves. The constitutional right to expression, be it political or social is safeguarded in Nigeria’s legal framework.

He added, “NADECO wishes to remind President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian people that Tinubu himself is a product of incessant and numerous protests beginning with Chief MKO Abiola’s June 12, 1993, annulled elections.

“In 2014, prominent figures like President Tinubu, Pastor Tunde Bakare, Pastor Enoch Adeboye and Professor Wole Soyinka, exercised their rights to dissent, including symbolic acts that criticized the government.

“Why then should Nigerians be denied the right to peaceful protest today? While President Tinubu referenced revolution, it is essential to clarify that revolutions emerge originally rather than being orchestrated. It is disingenuous for the government to criminalise protest by targeting its organisers.

“We call on the international community to monitor this planned peaceful protest closely, ensuring the safety of every Nigerian Participant.

“This protest may evolve similarly to the one he supported in 2014. NADECO USA therefore considers it an irony of a circumstance and hypocrisy of the highest order for people to run all over the place to attempt to intimidate the Nigerian people who are genuinely desirous of defending their rights to good governance.”
