Police operatives have teargassed protesters at the Lekki toll-gate area of Lagos State, causing #EndBadGovernance protesters to scamper for safety.
Battle-ready security operatives comprising men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Nigerian Army, and others, had earlier stationed at strategic positions around the toll-gate, in readiness for the protesters.
Addressing the protesters, a security operative directed them to join other protesters at the designated locations for the protest.

Recall that a Lagos State High Court had, on Tuesday, restricted protesters participating in the nationwide protest to specific locations within the state.
Justice Emmanuel Ogundare, while ruling on an ex parte application by the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, (SAN), ordered that protests could only take place at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota and Peace Park in Ketu.
It was believed that it was due to the protesters’ defiance of the court order that made the police fire the teargas in order to disperse them.

Many injured as protests turn violent in Kano, Jigawa
Peaceful protests in Kano and Jigawa, on Thursday turned into chaos after security agencies tried using bullets and teargas to disperse the crowd. Jigawa State.
The nationwide protest was organized to demand government reforms over the recent hardship in the country and has seen a significant turnout of aggrieved Nigerians.
For fear of attacks, commuters remained indoors while shops and businesses were on lockdown.
However, the protesters who were in the streets chanted solidarity songs demanding an end to bad governance. Their placards read; n “bring back subsidy.”
In Jigawa State the protest began from Eid ground following by pass, going through Government House road.
The protesters, however, burnt tyres along the government house road causing the police to fire tear gas to disperse them.
While in Kano TVN observed that the protesters got wider acceptability across the metropolis and local government areas.
Two persons were, however, reported dead in Kano and many others were injured when the operatives fired live rounds into the crowd and tear-gassed the protesters.
Checks by our correspondent at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital show that many protesters were rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
The protesters suffered injuries and bullet wounds. Doctors are now busy trying to save the lives of the casualties.

Hardship: IPOB alleges plot to attack Igbos during nationwide protest
The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Thursday, alleged a plot to attack and eliminate Igbos in the North and Western parts of the country during the 10-day protest.
IPOB urged Igbos to be on guard and protect their lives and properties as the nationwide protest against hunger commences.
Emma Powerful, the spokesman of IPOB, alleged that criminals would be hired to attack Igbos as the protest continues.
In a statement he signed, Powerful said: “Following the wind of hardship and hunger protest and bad governance blowing across the contraption called Nigeria, the global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, led by the great leader, Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu Kanu wish to advise Ndigbo to be on guard and protective of their lives and properties during the protests. Our ancestors said that whoever is surrounded by enemies always watches over his life.
“The clandestine State sponsored operation of targeting Ndigbo in the North and West will be carried out with claims of going after protest sponsors.
“There are also plans to sponsor criminal elements from the Northern extraction in the East to carry out violent protests to provide opportunities for the Nigerian murderous security to launch attaan ck against Ndigbo during this period.
Therefore, Ndigbo should be careful and know that they are hated and targeted across the contraption called Nigeria.”
Powerful said the false accusation against the Labour Party 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi was part of the agenda to eliminate the Igbos.
He added: “Furthermore, the false accusations against IPOB and Mr Peter Obi by the federal government as the sponsors of the proposed protest by the Nigerian Government Agents are part of the sinister plan and agenda to target Ndigbo for elimination.
“The false alarm that IPOB and Ndigbo are sponsoring the protest is another false flag operation targeted at killing Ndigbo during the protest.
“Neither Ndigbo nor IPOB called for the Nigerians to protest against the leadership’s disastrous performance in Nigeria. Interestingly, both the IPOB, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and many other Igbo groups have warned Ndigbo not to join the proposed peaceful national protest against hardship and hunger in wider Nigeria.
“We have maintained that Nigerians must carry their cross and enjoy their Emi Lokan. Ndigbo does not know what Emir Lokan means. Sadly, the Nigerian government and her proxies are falsely accusing Ndigbo and IPOB as the sponsors of the protest against Tinubu’s government. WE HAVE NO HAND IN IT.”

Former lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani has described the looting of government properties in Kano State by protesters as ‘unfortunate’.
TVN reports that a group of protesters participating in the ongoing nationwide protest have destroyed and looted a building in Kano state.
Reacting to the development, Sani, in a tweet on X called for lives and properties to be protected.
He tweeted: “The images and clips of the looting in Kano are unfortunate and condemnable.
“All efforts must be put in place to secure people’s lives and properties.”
TVN reports that the nationwide hunger protests tagged #EndBadGovernance started today August 1.
The protest is expected to last for days having been slated for the 1st to the 10th of August.

PROTEST: PFN scribe cautions FG not to take Nigerians for granted
The national publicity secretary of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, Archbishop-elect Emmah Gospel Isong has called on the federal government of Nigeria not to take Nigerians for granted.
He said Nigerians are considerate and passionate about their country, which is the reason the planned protest against alleged bad governance has become softened.
Reacting about the first day of the 10 days planned protest, Dr Isong who is the founder of Christian Central Chapel International said although critical stakeholders like community, religious and other concerned leaders have appealed to organizers of the protest to see reasons to rescind their decision yet it was very important too for the state and federal governments to play their own parts by looking towards the wellbeing of the citizens.
He said having seemingly achieved victory like this which may not always come cheap as it is therefore the government must wake up, listen to the cries and yearnings of their people and assuage them.
He noted that Nigerian youths are not praising the government but are not violent either yet the government should in turn create more employment, increase productivity, ease business environments and reach out more to community leaders.
“There’s an adage that says when you talk to the kites you also talk to the chicks. Having cautioned the youths and organizers of the protest, we also caution the federal government to be people-friendly.
“Nigerian leaders should wake up and work towards alleviating the sufferings of the masses, raise the standards of living, and reduce the price of petrol which has contributed mostly to hyperinflation in the country.
“We want all levels of governments to be accountable to the people of Nigeria”, he said.
He disclosed that Cross River was the most affected during the last endSARS protest and the people and government have not completely recovered from it.
He stated that CAN and PFN are neck-deep in praying for peace, and unity and for governments to be well guided by the divine spirit.

Economic activities in most parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital were on Thursday paralysed as a result of the nationwide protests against hunger and scarcity of essential commodities across the country.
TVN reports that the nationwide protests commenced in Ibadan Thursday morning. It was learnt that some groups and organisations organised the protests which started at various locations within the ancient city.
One of the groups started its protest in front of the University of Ibadan while another one started at Iwo Road while another protest started at the Mokola roundabout and another at Dugbe.
TVN observed that commercial banks, petroleum stations, shopping malls, markets and shops, schools, government establishments and other public infrastructures.in major parts of Ibadan were under lock and key.
It was gathered that traders at the spare parts market at Araromi Gate have warned their colleagues not to open their shops today.
A similar incident was reported at Bodija and other markets in the ancient city.
Our correspondent also observed that major roads in Ibadan were deserted as a result of the protests.
It was observed that the Eleyele -Eruwa Road, Eleyele -Dugbe Road, Sango -Eleyeye Road, and Challenge- Ring Road were deserted with only a few people passing the roads.
A similar situation was observed in areas such as Bodija, Ojoo, Mokola, Total Garden, Agodi Gate and Iwo Road.

The Police in Borno on Thursday imposed a 24-hour curfew across the state in response to the suicide attack in Kawuri Village in Konduga Local Government Area that killed 16 people and injured 20 others amid the August protest in the country.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP, Nahum Daso, made this known in a statement released in Maiduguri.
According to Nahum, the decision was made based on the bomb attack that killed many innocent citizens.
He said the decision was made after consultation between Governor Babagana Zulum, and heads of security agencies in the state, to forestall further security breaches in the state.
“The curfew is a measure to prevent further loss of life and property and to allow security agencies to maintain control and ensure public safety.
“Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid any unnecessary movements during the curfew period,” he said.
Recall that a suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber detonated a bomb at a marketplace in Kauri, a rural community in the Konduga area of Borno on Wednesday.

Nasarawa youths shun hunger protest
Youths in the Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State have shunned the ongoing nationwide protest on the hardship being faced by citizens of the country.
Our correspondent who went around Lafia, the Nasarawa state capital on Thursday to monitor the situation, observed that Makurdi/Jos and Shandam roads leading to Government House, Lafia were deserted as security operatives were seen stationed at flashing points to control any possible breakdown of law and order in the areas.
Also, in the Lafia metropolis, residents were seen going about their lawful businesses without any form of harassment.
Other areas visited by our correspondent in the Lafia LG include UAC, Kwandere, and Makurdi roads.
At the locations, youths, market men and women were seen going about their lawful businesses in a peaceful manner without any hindrance or molestation from security operatives in the state.
Our correspondent further gathered that the situation is generally peaceful across the 13 LGs of the state as there are no forms of violence or signs of destruction of government properties.
Although, our correspondent observed that some shop owners put their shops under lock and key probably for fear of being attacked by the protesters.
The Commissioner of Police, Umar Nadada was seen in a convoy going around the state capital alongside other security agencies to ensure that there was no form of violence, infringement on any citizen rights and destruction of properties in the state.
Our correspondent also observed that black marketers on the roadsides had deserted their various petrol stands.
Also, security personnel have been mobilised to protect the Correctional Centre (prison) in Lafia to prevent any disruption and unforeseen circumstances during the demonstration period.
The State Commissioner of Police had warned troublemakers to stay away from the state, urging officers of the command to ensure that the peaceful protesters are protected.
In an interview with two residents of Lafia LGA, Ibrahim Isa and Daniel Emmanuel, both appealed to the federal and state governments to do the needful and urgently address the economic hardship being faced by the citizens.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, has lamented the destruction of a technology hub in Kano, just days before its scheduled launch.
The Digital Innovation Park, designed to support Nigeria’s technical talent accelerator program (3MTT), was reportedly set ablaze and looted during the protests on Thursday.
“Sad to learn that our Digital Innovation Park in Kano slated for launch next week to support our technical talent accelerator (3MTT) has been set ablaze and looted by protesters,” Tijani stated in a post via X on Thursday.
The incident occurred as part of wider unrest in Kano, where protesters targeted the yet-to-be-commissioned Nigeria Communication Commission Industrial Park.
Tijani highlighted the immediate impact of this destruction on planned initiatives.
“Alongside #3MTT, this building is set to host our buildathon holiday maker programme for secondary school kids starting next week,” he added.
The minister characterised the damage as a setback for the journey to deepening the workforce for technology and creating job opportunities for the youth.
