Newspaper editor advises students on discovery, humility

0

The Saturday Editor, Independent Newspapers Limited, Lagos, Mr Yemi Adebisi, has advised the graduates of DABS Dynamic International School, Mowe, Ogun State to discover themselves and remain humble.

As the guest speaker at the school’s 14th graduation ceremony, Adebisi emphasised that self-discovery was crucial for being celebrated.

The theme of graduation and prize-giving ceremony was ‘Hakuna Matata,’ a Swahili phrase meaning “no problems for the rest of your days” or “don’t worry, be happy.”

He said, “You must discover yourself. There is something unique about you. Until you discover who you are, you cannot be celebrated. Let me use myself as an example. From a young age, I was very curious and loved writing. My parents preferred to hear the details of every activity from me because I would explain with specific emphasis. However, I ended up studying Microbiology at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. I graduated doing the wrong thing until I discovered that I was born to be a journalist. I went back to school and, by the grace of God, I have reached the peak of my profession today as an Editor of a national newspaper.”

He also encouraged them never to give up but to be humble if they wished to end well.

“Never give up; you can do it. Remember, nothing ventured, nothing gained. No matter how hard any venture is, don’t give up. It is when you don’t give up that you will get up. Whatever is too easy may not have enduring value. You will only be appreciated when you have crossed all barriers.

“If you want to end well, you must not be proud. It is when you are humble that greatness will come your way. No matter what you have achieved, don’t boast; it is not by your power but a privilege from God. When you humble yourself, God will lift you to the next level.

“Don’t cut corners. You don’t have to engage in dishonest activities to succeed; it may ruin your future. You don’t need to cheat in any examination to pass. You don’t need to write your examination at a Miracle Centre to excel. Beware of peer influence. Be content with what you have. Don’t fall prey to bad friends. Remember, bad company corrupts good manners.”

Director, DABS Dynamic International School, Pastor Lordson Francis Boateng, said, “Our vision is clear, and we are diligently working towards it. We have achieved a lot with God’s help. We have produced students who have completed their university education. Today, some of our graduates are already employed, others are serving their country, and many are still pursuing their studies in various institutions, both within and outside the country.

“Beyond academics, we believe in a well-rounded education. We incorporate discipline and nurture talents in our students. Our efforts have paid off, as we consistently achieve success in various competitions. For instance, we once participated in an erudite competition and secured second place in the senior category, winning a total prize of about N100,000. This is a significant achievement for our school.”

Chairman of the day, Mr Olakunle Owolabi, called on the government to repair the roads in the community.

“The road to this place is not good enough. We always struggle to get here. With a supportive government, this school could be even bigger and better.”

France tame D’Tigress in Olympics Basketball

0

Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, suffered their first defeat at the Paris 2024 Olympics, slumping to 75-54 defeat to France in their second Group C game in Paris on Thursday, According Sports Extra reports.

It wasn’t nearly as pretty as the opening 75-54  blowout of Australia, but Ezinne Kalu was the best performer on the day, with the New Jersey-born point guard and three-time AfroBasket champion Ezinne Kalu followed up with her second successive stunning performance in as many outings at the Games.

Following their impressive win over the Opals on Monday Rena Wakama’s side hoped to make it two successive victories, but were undone by the suffocating French side, boasting a strong defence.

Gabby Williams had 14 points, seven assists and six steals as France improved to 2-0 with a win over Nigeria at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

France’s defensive chops have been impressive through two games, holding Nigeria to the same total as in Les Bleus opening defeat of Canada.

Marine Johannes added 15 points for the French, who were aggressive and physical throughout, committing 14 fouls and racking up 13 steals.

France’s size advantage also showed up in the paint, shooting 22-of-35 from inside the 3-point line.

Despite the defeat Kalu had another impressive game, scoring 18 points, but there was little help outside of Murjanatu Liman Musa’s 14.

Nigeria’s total points did not come close to the 75 posted in the tournament-opening win over Australia, and 15 of their points came from the line.

D’Tigress join Australia with a 1-1 record, while Canada is 0-2.

Wakama’s side will have a chance to clinch a historic knockout berth when they meet Canada on Saturday, while France look to complete a perfect run through the group in a matchup with Australia.

Born to a Nigerian father and Chinese mother in China, Nwandu started representing the country after featuring at the National Sports Festival, which was held in Asaba in 2022.

Although her father is from Enugu, she represented Bayelsa in Asaba 2022 and helped them set a new national record of 9:28:30 in the 4×200m freestyle women’s swimming event.

She qualified for the Olympics by her World Aquatics (FINA) ranking, and she will be competing in the women’s 50m freestyle on Saturday.

“It feels so real, and I feel so excited. I have never expected this to happen in my swimming career, but I’m excited to be here among all these amazing athletes,” Nwandu said via Making of Champions.

“I definitely want to get a new personal best here. From my experience, I just try not to overthink. I just want to be able to focus and think more clearly; I’m just taking it as easy as possible,” she added.

From the World Aquatics website, Nwandu’s best time in the women’s 50m freestyle is 25.60s, which she produced at the 10th Singapore National Championships in November 2023.

She also reflected on how her journey in swimming started.

“I started swimming when I was eight years old. At a school competition, I didn’t do so well, and I asked my dad if I could get something if I did better, and he promised me ice cream once every week.”

The women’s 50m freestyle is Team Nigeria’s only event on Saturday, and she is in heat 6 along with seven other swimmers.

Only the fastest 16 of the 79 swimmers in the event will qualify for the semifinals.

House help admits killing Justice Ajumogobia’s daughter – Police source

One of the domestic workers of Aribemchukwu, the slain daughter of Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, has owned up to being involved in the murder of her boss, a police source exclusively disclosed on Thursday.

According Metro reported that the deceased, popularly called Chuchu, was reportedly killed in her Parkview Estate residence in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State.

Although a family source said she was killed Tuesday night, her lifeless body was discovered on Wednesday morning outside the gate of her residence.

Her three domestic employees, which included the house help, a security guard, and a driver, were, however, arrested in connection to the murder.

Providing updates on the findings made so far, a police source who craved not to be mentioned as he was not authorised to speak on the matter said the house help confessed to the crime during interrogation.

The source also clarified that the deceased was murdered inside her room, and her body was thereafter dragged from the spot outside the gate where it was dumped.

According to the source, the suspects attempted to clean up the blood stains but missed some spots because the act was perpetrated at night.

“The deceased was killed in her room and her body was dragged to the front of the gate to make it look like she was killed on the spot. After that, all the blood stains were carefully cleaned but still, they missed some spots.  They did not clean it well because it happened at night.”

“The house help did not deny what happened. She said, ‘We do am, na we do am’, during an interrogation and everything she said tallied with the evidence on the ground.” the police source disclosed.

The suspects were also said to have immediately packed all the valuables of the deceased after killing their boss.

The source also confirmed that the three domestic workers were employed at the same time a week before the incident.

Until her death, the late Aribemchukwu was a doctor and had recently married.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said investigations were still ongoing.

He said, “Investigations are still ongoing on the incident. We will provide updates as soon as there are more developments.”

Dangote refinery to gulp N1.7tn crude monthly – Report

0

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery is going to need about N1.7tn worth of crude oil monthly following the directive of President Bola Tinubu mandating the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to sell crude to the plant and other domestic refineries in naira.

On Monday, Tinubu directed NNPC to sell crude to the Dangote refinery and other upcoming refineries in naira.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, had made this known in a post via his official X handle.

Onanuga said the Federal Executive Council adopted the move on Monday to ensure the stability of the pump price of refined fuel and the dollar-naira exchange rate.

An analysis of figures from various industry reports showed that the $20bn Dangote refinery located in Lekki, Lagos, would gulp about N1.7tn of crude oil monthly should NNPC meet the mandate of the President.

The average cost of crude in 2024 is about $83/barrel, based on data from Statistica, a global statistical firm.

The President, Dangote Industries, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, recently stated that his refinery would hit 500,000 barrels per day capacity in August, and 550,000bpd in December 2024.

This means that between August and November this year the refinery targets to refine 500,000bpd of crude oil, before proceeding to hit the 550,000bpd mark in December.

Going by 500,000bpd refining capacity and the $83/barrel average price of Brent, the global benchmark for crude, it implies that the plant would require about $41.5m worth of crude oil daily, which represents N56.55bn, using the average exchange rate of N1,362.6/$ in 2024.

This, therefore, implies that the refinery would gulp about N1.7tn worth of crude oil monthly based on the recent directive of the President mandating NNPC to supply crude to Dangote and other domestic refineries in naira.

Operators speak

The National Public Relations Officer of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Chief Ukadike Chinedu, said though Nigeria has been battling to ramp up crude oil production, NNPC should endeavour to meet the President’s order.

“It is an order by the President that crude be sold to domestic refineries in naira, and that includes the Dangote refinery. We know that the refinery is massive and requires over 500,000 barrels of crude oil daily, so NNPC and its partners should work harder to meet this demand.

“We just have to try. The government has been talking about ramping up crude oil production. This is the time to deliver on that. The President has given an order and it is up to NNPC and the ministry to meet that order,” he stated.

On his part, the Publicity Secretary of the Crude Oil Refiners Association of Nigeria, Eche Idoko, said the supply of crude to local refineries in naira would bring down the cost of petrol and strengthen the naira against the dollar.

“The sheer fact that the crude will be sold in naira will give the naira a lot of leverage against the dollar, and by implication, the naira will appreciate against the dollar. Automatically when there are fewer naira chasing the dollar, it will affect the price.

“It means the cost of refining will drop and this will affect the pump price. We will see a rebound in the pricing of fuel once the President’s order is implemented,” he stated.

During a tour of the refinery with journalists recently, Dangote said the refinery was fully online, with over $26bn being expected annually.

“Successful completion of trial run in January 2024. Refined and intermediate products include polypropylene, naphtha, RCO, gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. Steady state production phase commenced in March 2024.

“Ramping up production to reach 500kbpd (15 crude cargoes a month) by next August, 550kbpd by the end of the year, and 650kbpd by the first quarter of 2025. Gasoline production is to commence in July with sales from August. Annual revenue is projected to exceed $26bn,” Dangote stated.

He added that the refinery has dedicated loading gantries with 86 loading bays; dedicated marine facilities for offtake of crude and loading of petroleum products; 900-kilo tonnes per annum polypropylene plant, 36ktpa sulphur, and 585ktpa carbon black production.

The total storage capacity of the refinery is put at 4.5 billion litres, which can cover 20 days of crude requirement product storage for 15 days of Nigeria’s petrol consumption.

He averred that the refinery would produce 53 million litres of petrol per day and 1.1 million tonnes per day.

“The Dangote refinery can meet Nigeria’s requirements and have a surplus for exports,” he stated.

On Tuesday, NNPC announced its goal to increase crude oil production to two million barrels per day by the end of the year, as it strives to meet domestic crude oil demand as well as export.

The country’s daily production rose from 1.27 million barrels in June to 1.6 million in July, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission.

Speaking during a meeting with Maritime Stakeholders at the Nigerian Navy Headquarters, the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Mele Kyari, expressed optimism that the target would be met, emphasising that NNPC was fully committed to achieving it.

NCAA declares airports safe as train services stop

0

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority assured passengers of their safety at the airports and smooth airline operations as the hunger protests continue nationwide.

However, train services were suspended on Thursday as a precautionary measure against damages at train stations, particularly on the Abuja-Kaduna route.

The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection of the NCAA, Michael Achimugu, insisted that there was adequate security at the airports while speaking on the situation at the facilities.

“Security is okay at the airport. I’m currently talking to you from the airport. I’m going around on a path-finding with my team. We just left local, we are headed to international. Everything is going on smoothly,” Achimugu stated.

He noted that “security is tight. Security agencies like the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria Aviation Security and NCAA made adequate preparations and planning before today. So we are assuring passengers of security so long as the airlines are operating.”

However, Achimugu noted that two domestic airlines, Overland and Valuejet, announced that they would not be operating for the day.

“One or two domestic airlines have announced to their passengers that they will not be operating today. Overland and Valuejet are not operating today. All other flights have been on schedule and everything is under control,” he explained.

The reasons behind their non-operation remain unclear but are speculated to be related to the protests or other factors.

In contrast, train services have faced more significant disruptions. The Operations Manager at Idu Train Station, Abdul Azeez, confirmed the halt in train operations, citing security concerns.

“To the best of my knowledge, we are not operating today. The security officers are on the ground. You only know where you are starting from. You don’t know where you are going to end up,” Azeez stated, underscoring the unpredictable nature of the situation.

The suspension affects not only the Nigerian Railway Corporation but also the metro services, reflecting the widespread impact of the current unrest.

“The train doesn’t start from Abuja alone. It passes through a lot of states. Even the metro is not working,” Azeez noted.

Meanwhile, it was observed that passengers of different airlines trooped to the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos early to avoid possible violence that might erupt as a result of the protest.

Passengers scheduled to fly later in the morning, afternoon, and evening arrived at the airport terminal very early.

While the airport environment appears empty with vehicles barely moving inside the airport, the airport terminals at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Murtala Muhammed Airport 2, and General Aviation Terminal were filled with many air passengers sitting quietly and awaiting their scheduled flight times.

Findings showed that airlines operated their flights, while a few had to cancel their flights for different reasons ranging from weather and impact of the protest.

For instance, Air Peace canceled its Kano and Ibadan flights, while Value Jet delayed one of its flights on the domestic route. Air Peace also delayed its Benin flight because of the weather.

Some of the passengers in different terminals were seen dosing off as many of them arrived at the airports before 6:00 am on Thursday.

A couple who were seen sleeping on a seat at the Murtala Muhammed Airport 2, told our correspondent that they had travelled from Benin with the plan to be off the road before the protesters commenced their street demonstration.

The husband, Obiora Kenneth, said “We left Edo State around past 4:00 am this morning on a chattered vehicle and that was just to beat the possible crisis that may erupt from the protest today. Our flight is in the evening but we should be here early than to miss our flight over the protest.”

Ministry considers improved allocation to Legal Aid Council

0

The Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, has stated that the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning was looking into improving budgetary allocation to the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria in 2025, to help tackle its funding challenges.

He disclosed this at the just concluded management retreat of the council in Lagos, which was sponsored by the Rule of Law and Anti-corruption Programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by International IDEA.

He noted that the Ministry of Justice was working hard to improve the funding of the Legal Aid Council as part of efforts to strengthen justice administration in the country.

The minister stated that since he assumed office, he had been determined to champion the cause of Legal Aid and make efforts to rejuvenate and assist it in achieving its mandates.

“I am saying that the budget allocation of the Legal Aid Council should be as much as it is in developed countries, but should make it reasonable in the country,”  Fagbemi asserted.

According to the minister, there is a need to build the capacity of the council because everything is changing and it cannot give what it does not have.

He vowed to continue to assist the Legal Aid Council, urging lawyers in the council to volunteer to assist the council by offering pro bono services, especially in rural areas.

Fagbemi said the council was established to render legal services to the less privileged, especially those whose income is less than the minimum wage.

He added, “The conditions of service are being looked into, as are some other critical areas that the government is looking into, such as assisting the legal aid council, as we have heard from the director general. So I am happy to be here and I hope that they will continue to reciprocate this gesture to the government.”

Also, the Director-General of the council, Aliyu Abubakar, disclosed that the agency was planning to recruit 500 new staff members.

He also revealed that the council had received a response from the Presidency for the recruitment, noting that it was only ironing out the grey areas pointed out.

Abubakar added that the minister had given the council the go-ahead to work toward improving its budgetary allocation.

He appealed to the AGF to continue to support the council to be able to provide legal services for the less privileged in the country.

Police arrest six, exhume body of Ekiti varsity ex-DVC

0

The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Mr Adeniran Akinwale, said on Thursday that the police had arrested six prime suspects in connection with the kidnap and killing of the former Deputy Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, Prof Olorunfemi Olaofe.

Olaofe was taken away by armed men from his residence at the Federal Housing Estate, Ado Ekiti, alongside his security guard, on July 9, 2027.

He was discovered dead and buried in a shallow grave in the bush along Airport Road at Afao Ekiti on Wednesday, July 31.

The CP, in a statement on Thursday, signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, said the body of the retired university teacher had been exhumed from the shallow grave and deposited in the morgue.

Akinwale said, “An unknown gang of armed men allegedly stormed the residence of Prof. Femi Olaofe, kidnapped him alongside his security guard, one Abdul Opotu, and took them to an unknown destination with the Professor’s Toyota Camry car.”

He stated that the police, on receipt of the information, deployed Rapid Response Squad operatives to the scene for the possible rescue of the victims and the arrest of the perpetrators, noting, “They had already whisked the victims away before the arrival of the operatives. The operatives, however, combed the forest between Ado Ekiti and Afao Ekiti and recovered Olaofe’s Camry car.

The CP stated that “a discrete investigation and a painstaking operation for rescue of the victims and arrest of the perpetrators led to the arrest of one Omowaye Ayodele at Bencom Guest House, Akure, Ondo State.

“Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to the commission of the crime and mentioned one Kenneth, Amodu Gbenga, Nnamani Chukwuka and Ojо a.k.a Ojo ljan as his accomplices. He confessed further that Abdul Opotu, who was the security guard of the victim (Prof. Olaofe), was the one who invited them to kidnap the professor.

He further stated that Ayodele (suspect) said the security guard was not kidnapped alongside the professor as earlier reported, but only played along and made the operation easier for them.

Ayodele, he further disclosed, confessed that the two AK-47 rifles used to kidnap the professor were in possession of Kenneth who is currently at large.

“Further investigation led to the arrest of Amodu Gbenga, who also confessed to the commission of the crime during an investigation and further narrated how he used to supply food and water to the gang members in their hideouts located in a bush behind Government College, off Ijan Road, Ado Ekiti.

“The two suspects led the police operatives to their hideouts for the possible rescue of the victim but discovered that the gang in the custody of the victim had already relocated with the victim to another unknown location.

“Further investigation on Tuesday, July 30, led to the discovery of a shallow grave in a bush located off Afao Road, behind the new airport site, Ado Ekiti, where a human being was suspected killed and buried.

“Consequently, Order of Exhumation and Coroner Forms were obtained from the Magistrate Court, Ado Ekiti, while the Ministry of Environment was contacted. On Wednesday, July 31, the police led the Ministry of Environment and some medical practitioners to the scene where the corpse was exhumed and later identified as the earlier kidnapped Professor Olaofe,” he said. he said.

He stated that the corpse had been deposited at the Ekiti State Teaching Hospital morgue, Ado-Ekiti, for autopsy.

“Efforts are ongoing for the possible arrest of the fleeing members of the gangs including the security guard of the kidnapped and murdered professor who masterminded the crime. Meanwhile, six suspects have been arrested so far and are in custody undergoing investigation,” Akinwale stated.
