Hoodlums attacked the All Progressives Congress (APC) State Secretariat in Dutse, Jigawa State capital, on Thursday, setting vehicles ablaze and causing chaos.
In Hadejia, another area of Jigawa, the #EndBadGovernance protests turned violent, while security agents dispersed protesters marching to the Government House in Dutse.

In Gumel, the store of the state Agricultural Supply Company (JASCO), the house of the member of the House of Representatives representing Gumel, Gagarawa and Maigarati, as well as the residence of the APC Zonal Vice Chairman, were vandalized and looted by the protesters who overpowered the security agents deployed in the area.
Also, in Birninkudu, two people were injured and fertilizer and grains stores were vandalized and looted by the protesters.
Similarly, in Ringim, Jahun and Kazaure towns, the protesters took to the streets, calling for an end to bad governance
The situation remains tense in both states, with reports of ongoing clashes and destruction of property. The #EndBadGovernance protests, aimed at addressing economic hardship, have taken a deadly turn in the North-West geopolitical zone.

Nationwide protest: North was deceived – Adamu Garba
Amid the ongoing nationwide protests against bad governance in the country, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Adamu Garba, on Friday, said the North is played into the protest of vandalism.
Garba said northern influencers pushing for the protest should realize that they have been used to destroy their commonwealth.

TVN reports that some Nigerians are on a nationwide protest commencing on August 1 to August 10, 2024.
The organisers of the protest have lamented about widespread hunger and inflation in the country.

Optometrists seek tax break on optical devices
The President of the Nigeria Optometric Association, Chimeziri Anderson, on Thursday, urged the Federal Government to grant exemption from custom import duty and value added tax on optical devices and lenses towards reducing financial burden on eye care providers and patients in Nigeria.
He made this call during a press briefing to herald the 47th annual scientific conference/annual general meeting and vision expo, with the theme: “The Optometrist: An Indispensable Partner in Primary Healthcare,” holding at Jogor Event Centre, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Anderson also advocated direct employment of optometrists in Federal health institutions so as to address the brain drain and ensure adequate eye care services in public health facilities.
“Over the past few years, we have noted a significant increase in efforts towards eye health by the Federal Ministry of Health. The visibility of the ministry has been remarkable and praiseworthy.
“This trend reflects the strategic vision of the current administration under President Bola Tinubu, who appointed the former boss of Primary Health Care Development Agency, to restore the faith of Nigerians in the government’s capacity to provide quality, accessible, affordable, and equitable healthcare
“The establishment of the Tertiary Healthcare Standards Committee ensures optimal performance and quality in our Federal health institutions, but also worth a standing ovation, is the recent executive order signed by President Tinubu, which aimed at reducing barriers to the importation of raw materials and equipment for pharmaceuticals and medical devices.
“The principles of primary healthcare are based on equitable distribution of health care resources, community participation as well as intersectional coordination, appropriate technology and focus on prevention,” Anderson noted.
He assured Nigerians that NOA was committed to aligning its endeavours with the fundamental principles of primary healthcare, which are essential for achieving universal health coverage.
“Our initiatives are designed to promote equitable access to eye care, community engagement, and prevention.
Adegboruwa accuses security agents of provoking peaceful protesters
Human rights lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, on Thursday, accused security agents of provoking peaceful #EndBadGovernance protesters across the country, warning that such actions could escalate the demonstrations.
In a statement, Adegboruwa, who represents one of the protest organizers, The Take It Back Movement, commended Nigerians for their courage in speaking out against the government’s policies, despite threats and intimidation.

He noted that while the protests were largely peaceful, especially in Lagos and Abuja, some skirmishes were caused by security agents’ provocation. Adegboruwa urged security agencies to follow acceptable standards in handling civil protests to avoid bloodshed.
“The responsibility imposed upon all security agencies is to provide coverage for peaceful protesters and avoid provocative actions that may escalate into uncomfortable fracas,” he said.
Adegboruwa’s statement comes as protests continue to rock the nation, with demonstrators demanding an end to bad governance and calling for improved living conditions.

ActionAid Nigeria urges Tinubu to address protesters’ demand
ActionAid Nigeria has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately address the nation and provide a detailed plan to address bad governance and adopt pro-poor policies.
It disclosed this in a statement by its Country Director, Andrew Mamedu on Friday.
“The demands for pro-poor policies are not just valid; they are urgent and necessary. Inflation is crippling livelihoods, and some of the government’s current spending priorities are out of touch with the harsh realities faced by millions of Nigerians,” Mamedu said.
The organisation condemned the recent court rulings restricting protests to specific locations, saying they “set a dangerous precedent that could curtail citizens’ rights to free expression.”
ActionAid Nigeria also expressed concern over the use of tear gas against peaceful protesters and the hijacking of protests by hoodlums, leading to looting and vandalism.
“We are calling on both pro and anti-protesters to ensure their demonstrations remain peaceful and respectful. We also demand that the President urgently and directly address the nation and outline specific measures to tackle the issues arising,” Mamedu said.
The organisation emphasised that the demands of the protesters are simple: transparency, accountability, and policies that prioritize the welfare of the people.
“The time for action is now. The future of Nigeria depends on responsive, responsible, and people-centred governance. The demands of the #EndBadGovernance protesters are a clarion call for change that must be heeded,” the statement added.

Atiku condemns #IgboMustGo campaign, calls for immediate arrest of promoters
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned a social media campaign tagged #IgboMustGo, calling for Lagosians and people of the South-West to forcefully chase out Igbo people from Lagos and other South-West states from August 20 to 30, 2024.
The campaign which is being sponsored by a group called as ‘Lagospedia’ which has been in the forefront of spewing hatred for other tribes living and doing businesses in the South-West, had in a post on X on Thursday, called for Igbo people to be chased out of Lagos.
“Lagosians and every S’West stakeholders should prepare for massive protest of #IgboMustGo from August 20 to 30,” the group wrote.
“They have one month from now to leave and relocate their businesses from all Southwest states. We urge all Yorubas living in the S’East to return home,” the Lagospedia group added.
But in a statement on his X handle on Friday, Atiku described the campaign as deeply troubling and fundamentally opposed to Nigeria’s principles of unity and coexistence.
He called on the government to take immediate action against those inciting ethnic hatred.
“The recent call on X (formerly Twitter) for a protest under the hashtag #IgboMustGo, demanding the forced relocation of Igbo people from Lagos and other Southwest states, is deeply troubling and fundamentally opposed to the principles of unity and coexistence that define our nation,” the former VP said.
“Such rhetoric is not only divisive but also endangers our peace and security, as our Constitution guarantees every Nigerian the right to live and work freely anywhere in the country.

“History has shown us the consequences of allowing hatred and bigotry to fester, as seen in Rwanda. What began with inflammatory rhetoric led to devastating outcomes. We must learn from these lessons and act decisively.
“I call on the Nigerian government and relevant authorities to take immediate and strong action against those inciting such hatred and division. It is imperative to investigate, arrest, and prosecute individuals promoting ethnic discrimination and violence.
“The rule of law must prevail, and those found guilty of incitement should face the full extent of legal consequences,” he noted.
Atiku also argued that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity, and that the country must resist any efforts to sow discord among its people.
“Lagos and the Southwest have long been melting pots of cultures where individuals from various backgrounds contribute to our collective growth and development. The Igbo community, along with all other ethnic groups, is an integral part of this vibrant mosaic.
“I urge all Nigerians to stand united against this divisive rhetoric and to champion unity, tolerance, and understanding. Our future depends on our ability to live and work together harmoniously.
“The government and security agencies must act swiftly to protect this fundamental principle and ensure that every Nigerian can live free from fear of discrimination or persecution.
“This will serve as a deterrent to others who might consider pursuing similar paths that threaten our national security.

Maduro: US backs González as winner of Venezuela presidential election
The United States has backed Edmundo González as the duly elected winner of Venezuela’s July 28, 2024 Presidential election.
This is as the US rejected Nicolas Maduro’s claimed victory to clinch a third consecutive term in power as president.
Although the the National Electoral Council, CNE declared Maduro the winner of the election, the US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken threw weight behind González.
This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday from the US Department of State.
Blinken noted that the National Electoral Council’s declaration of Maduro’s victory is “deeply flawed” and lacks credibility.
He cited opposition-published tally sheets from over 80 percent of polling stations, indicating González won by an “insurmountable margin,” corroborated by independent observers and exit polls.
The U.S. lauded the 12 million Venezuelans who voted despite challenges and rejected Maduro’s allegations against opposition leaders.
Blinken called for the release of those arrested for protesting against Maduro.
This comes after anti-Maduro protesters across the country in recent times.

Protesters desert Abuja national stadium, assemble at Berger
The EndBadGovernance protesters in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, have abandoned the Moshood Abiola Stadium and gathered at the popular Berger Roundabout.
An FCT High Court had on Wednesday ordered the protesters to limit their demonstrations to the stadium.
In compliance with the order, the protesters, on Thursday, gathered at the stadium but resisted pressure from security operatives to protest inside the stadium.
Afterwards, the protesters left the stadium and marched in their numbers after reports of other protesters at the Eagles Square being harassed by security operatives.
Upon arrival, the policemen guarding the facility repeatedly used tear gas on them.
Our correspondent, who was at the stadium at 7am on Friday did not see any protester but later learnt that the location had been changed.
As of the time of filing this report, the protesters were assembling at the Berger Roundabout.
