The Defence Headquarters claimed on Friday troops deployed to theatres of operation killed 572 suspected terrorists in July.
The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.
He said the troops also arrested 790 suspected terrorists alongside other criminals and rescued 479 hostages during the period.
Buba said the troops recovered 440 weapons, 10,589 ammunition comprising 232 AK47 rifles, 93 locally fabricated guns and 82 Dane guns.
The troops also recovered 32 pump action guns, 5,041 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 2,768 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 659 cartridges, 63 assorted arms and 2,259 ammunition.
The spokesman said: “In the North-East, troops of Operation Hadin Kai neutralised 254 terrorists, apprehended 167 suspects and rescued 80 kidnapped hostages. A total of 3,976 Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists and their families surrendered to troops during the period.
“A total of 106 AK47 rifles, 36 fabricated rifles, 29 Dane guns, 17 assorted arms, 1,644 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 968 rounds of 7.62mm NATO and 1,379 assorted ammunition were recovered.
“In the North-Central, troops of Operation Safe Haven neutralised 50 terrorists/violent extremists, apprehended 135 suspects and rescued 80 kidnapped hostages within the month.

“The troops also recovered 32 AK47 rifles, 28 fabricated guns, 27 assorted arms, 773 rounds of 7.62mm special, 200 rounds of 7.62mm NATO and 178 assorted ammunition.
“Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke neutralised 24 terrorists, apprehended 56 suspects and rescued 59 hostages. They also recovered a cache of assorted arms and ammunition.
“In the North-West, troops of Operation Hadarin Daji neutralised 152 terrorists, apprehended 102 suspects and rescued 144 kidnapped hostages in July.
“The troops also recovered 48 AK47 rifles, 24 fabricated guns, five assorted arms, 1,462 rounds of 7.62mm special, 1,079 rounds of 7.62mm NATO and 94 assorted ammunition.”

Afenifere condemns one-month ultimatum issued to Igbos to vacate Yoruba land
The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and socio-political organization, Afenifere, has condemned calls by some Yoruba extremists demanding the exit of Nigerians of Igbo extraction from the South-West.
The organization assured all Nigerians living legitimately in “any part of Yoruba land to entertain no fear about their safety or be afraid of being forced out of the area”.
The assurance was contained in a statement by the organization’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, while reacting to a post by a non-descript social media handle tagged ‘LagosPedia’ which warned Igbos living in Lagos and South-West Nigeria to leave the area within one month.
TVN reports that the post, which went viral on Thursday causing apprehension in Lagos and other parts of South-West, also gave the Igbos one-month ultimatum to vacate the region.
The hashtag #Igbomustgo also called on all Yorubas living in the South-East to “return home”.
The post reads: “Lagosians and every South-West stakeholders should prepare for the massive protest of #IgboMustGo on the 20th – 30th of August.
“They have 1 month from now to leave and relocate their business from all South-West states. We urge all Yorubas living in the South-East to return home.”
But Afenifere not only dismissed the threat, it also declared that those behind the unwarranted, provocative and divisive campaign “are out to cause disaffection among Ndigbo and Yorubas”.
Afenifere went further to state that there is no plan anywhere to expel any group of people who are peacefully doing their businesses from any part of the South-West.
The organization added, “Those who are being called to be ousted from the South-West are the unscrupulous herders who are making life difficult for our farmers and rural women.
“In this wise, our Igbo brothers and sisters living in Lagos and the South-West should not entertain any fear of expulsion. We are all Nigerians”.

Respect the sanctity of buildings, LASG urges protesters
The Lagos State Government has urged #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters to shun violence and respect the sanctity of physical structures.
The call was made by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Oluyinka Olumide, in Alausa on Friday.
Olumide, reinforcing the position of the Lagos State Government, asserted that the situation called for sober reflection rather than protest, given the genuine efforts of the government at all levels to bring relief to the people.
He said, “Protesters should refrain from destroying physical structures that serve the residential, commercial, and institutional needs of the people.
“Rather than violence and destruction, this period calls for everyone to be circumspect and particularly respect the sanctity of buildings, considering the values attached to them, the high cost of erecting them, and their important functions in society, including their accommodation and aesthetic values.”
He noted that physical structures across the state added to the alluring landscape of Lagos and helped project its cultural heritage.
He urged, “All hands must be on deck to build a liveable, organised, orderly, and sustainable physical environment.”

Unknown gunmen attack Military checkpoint in Ebonyi
Unknown gunmen have attacked a military checkpoint in the Amangwu axis of the Amasiri-Owutu-Edda highway in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident on Friday in Abakaliki, the state capital.
Ukandu said the attack occurred in the early hours of Friday.
“The information reaching us from Owutu Police Division reveals that some hoodlums attacked a military checkpoint on Friday morning.
“It is not yet certain if there were casualties. The attack was carried out by suspected gunmen in the area, who operated with motorcycles,” he added.

The Police Command in Lagos State has said it is presently not holding anyone for participating in the ongoing protest against hardship in the state.
The command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, who said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Lagos, stated that no protester was in its custody.
“All protesters arrested on Thursday were released same Thursday.
“The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Adegoke Fayoade, called the State CID to order for their release,” he said.
One of those leading the protests, Inibehe Effiong, had told the gathering at Gani Fawehinmi Park that no fewer than 12 protesters were arrested on Thursday.
Effiong, however, later corroborated the police spokesperson’s claim that all those arrested had been released.
He commended the police and other security agents for their professional handling of the protest in the state.
The #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters on Friday gathered in front of Park in Ojota for the second day.
NAN reports that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police was present at the protest to supervise and prevent any potential takeover by hoodlums.
The Commissioner of Police was reported to have provided water and snacks for the protesters.
The protesters earlier suspended their agitations for a while to observe Jumat prayers at the park.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, has threatened that the Nigerian Military will step in and quell the ongoing hunger protests if security breaches continue.

Nigerians took to the streets from Thursday, August 1, showing their grievances against hunger and high cost of living in the country.
However, there have been cases of looting and destruction of properties in some states.

Nigeria’s defence chief warns military will step in if violent protests persist
The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, on Friday, warned that the military would step in to assist the police and other security agencies if the violent protests in some parts of the country get out of control.
The CDS gave the warning while briefing journalists on the activities of the protesters resorting to violence in some parts of the country.
He said the military had been on standby providing support to the police and other security agencies since the beginning of the protest, adding that they would not stand by and watch things get out of hand.
The CDS said the military was determined to ensure total peace in all parts of the country with the support of all Nigerians, urging all to understand the government.
“Monies that are meant for development will have to be used to repair the destruction thing so that we can move forward.
“So instead of doing that, we should come together to make sure nothing is destroyed,” he said.
Musa urged Nigerians to look up to their local government and their state governments.
“I want to appeal once again for the support of all Nigerians, the federal government, the state government and local governments and let us avoid anything that will bring mayhem within our communities.
“We have seen the level of destructions that were carried just yesterday and you can imagine if this continues for so long.
“The armed forces and the entire security agencies will not stand by and see that to continue.
“We want to warn those that are in the house, those that don’t want to listen. We will not fold our hands and see our country destroyed.
“We will take action and the action will be taken professionally. Anyone that is caught will be taken to the courts to be dealt with,” he added.

We are not aware of abducted ex-Rep’s killing – Delta State Police Command
The Delta State Police Command has said it is not aware of the alleged killing of Joan Mrakpor, also known as Ada-Anioma, a former member of the House of Representatives who was abducted by gunmen.
There were reports that Mrakpor had been killed by her abductors. It was also reported that her dead body was seen dumped in a part of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, said the are false, adding that the ex-Delta State commissioner’s abductors had not made any contact.
“The team of security personnel deployed to the bank of the River Niger in both Asaba and Onitsha to verify her death or release returned without success,” the police spokesman said.
Kidnapers had on Tuesday forcefully abducted Mrakpor from her church in Asaba, after killing a police orderly and driver attached to her.

Looters targeted CAN relief rice, not govt’s
The Christian Association of Nigeria in Edo State has refuted claims that the rice looted during a recent incident in Urora, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, was supplied by the Federal Government.
CAN Chairman, Dr. Irekpono Omoike, clarified at a press conference on Friday at the Chancellery of the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin, the state capital.
He said the vandalised residence where bags of rice were looted by hoodlums in Urora, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of the state is owned by a vendor of the state CAN Implementation Committee for the Christian Feeding Programme.
He also said that the rice was part of a state government-funded relief programme aimed at assisting vulnerable Christians.
He said the initiative, in its second phase, involved distributing two billion naira worth of rice to various Christian groups.
He said, “There is a very important issue to correct a wrong notion that is circulating that the rice being distributed by the State Government is rice supplied by the Federal Government and re-bagged. This is misinformation. It is a very wrong notion that needs to be corrected.
“Earlier this year, the Edo State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria had a meeting with Governor Godwin Obaseki where he shared his concern on how to reach out to vulnerable persons and the poor who are bearing the hardship of the economic downturn in the country.
“After the meeting, an implementation committee for the Christian Feeding Programme was set up where we designed a programme on how to reach out to the poor with food palliatives. The governor released the 1st batch of the funding for the programme, which is 1 billion naira to purchase rice to be distributed. This was done and in May 2024 we flagged off the distribution of the first phase at the Baptist Convention Ground in Benin City.”
He said in the first phase of the programme 60,000 bags of 10kg rice were distributed, noting “In Edo South, 27,000 bags were distributed to the LGAs through the churches in Edo South, while in Edo North we had 18,000 bags distributed. In Edo Central, we had 50,000 bags. The total that was distributed in that first batch was 60,000 bags of 10kg rice.
Omoike noted, “For the second phase, another batch of 1 billion naira was released by the governor to replicate the exercise. We purchased another consignment, distributed it through the structure of CAN. This process is ongoing since the month of July. In the last few days, we have successfully distributed to all the churches that did not receive the 1st batch across the 18 LGAs.
“In this batch, we were able to reach 56,250. There’s another consignment in this last phase, just as we did in the 1st phase, meant for churches not under CAN, since this was really done in partnership with CAN.”
According to the Secretary of CAN Implementation Committee for the Christian Feeding Programme, Reverend Osagie Ehrunmwunse, “the truck in the viral video where bags of rice were looted belonged to a logistic company distributing the rice, explaining that the truck supplying down from Ekpoma had a breakdown the previous night.
He noted that the rice was meant for the Seventh Days Adventist, Latter Day Saints, vulnerable children, orphanage, widow among others.
“In an attempt for us to take that rice for safe keeping, that was when the products were looted by hoodlums. So that was exactly what happened on Thursday morning. Where the incident happened was not exactly a government warehouse. It is the house belonging to one of the suppliers of the rice for distribution.
“We are happy that nobody died in the process, or got injured. But like Mr. Chairman was responding, it is disheartening to know that people have to twist the information by saying it’s federal government rice.”
