Thousands gather as RCCG's 72nd convention begins at Redemption City

The Redeemed Christian Church of God begins its annual August convention on Monday.

The 72nd edition of the convention with the theme “Heaven” is scheduled for Monday, August 5, to Sunday, August 11, 2024, at The Redemption City, Mowe Ogun State (Lagos-Ibadan Way).

Thousands of worshippers are expected to be physically present for the convention at the Redemption City.

Highlights will include the ordination of new pastors, teachings and the Friday Holy Ghost Night.

Guest houses and hostels in the Redemption City and its environs had already been fully booked by worshippers.

A check by our correspondent on Sunday revealed attendees already trooping in as vehicular traffic into the camp is expected to build up from Monday, intensifying on Friday for the much-awaited Holy Ghost night.

Speaking on the convention, the General Overseer of the RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, had during the July 5, 2024 Holy Ghost Service themed “Refuel Your Fire”, said the 72nd edition will be “a convention like you have never seen it before”.

“Whenever they ask you what is the vision of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, we have always said number one, we want to make it to heaven and number two we want to take as many people as possible with us,” he said of the theme.

Adeboye urged the congregation to do their “very best to inform friends, relatives, and co-workers about the convention.”

“It is going to be very wonderful, we would be discussing themes like as pure as light,” Adeboye had said.

The RCCG is said to have a membership strength of over nine million across the world, with five million estimated to be from Nigeria.

Since 2018 when the church unveiled a 12 million capacity auditorium at The Redemption City, Mowe Ogun state, attendance of participants on site at the annual convention has grown.

At the convention, attendees are usually availed of free meals at designated points within the camp.

The church, on its social handle, said “RCCG 72nd Annual Convention is free, not sold out and open to everyone! Do you want to experience Heaven on Earth? Join us from August 5 to 11, 2024 at The Redemption City, Mowe Ogun state.”

‘‘Your general safety is in the efficiency of your nation’s protection services and not in the church.
‘‘Your progress is in the availability of employment and access to finance to build businesses and not in the church and one more… Your potential for growing wealth is in YOUR ability to understand how money works and invest that money for that money to work for you and not in sowing seeds or tithes!

Rudeboy blasts APC's Joe Igbokwe over comments on P-Square split

Paul Okoye, better known as Rudeboy and formerly one-half of the musical duo P-Square, has criticised an All Progressives Congress chieftain, Joe Igbokwe, remarks about the separation of the P-Square group.

Igbokwe, in a statement via his Facebook page on Sunday, expressed his disappointment over the brothers’ inability to reconcile their differences.

Igbokwe said, “So shameful that two twin brothers Paul and Peter cannot work together, cannot love one another, they cannot trust each other, they cannot think together, they cannot reason together, they cannot forgive each other.”

Igbokwe went on to criticise the brothers’ handling of their personal and professional lives, stating, “They cannot manage their wives, they cannot manage their success story, they cannot control their emotions, they cannot manage their internal contradictions, even their wives could not help matters.”

Igbokwe questioned the role of family elders in resolving the conflict.

He said, “What about their parents, their brothers and sisters, their Nnaochie? etc. This is a shame. It pains me to no end. Now, are there no elders in the family?”

He further criticised the duo stating, “This is Success without brains. Education without character. Make shame catch us small na. When Gold rust what will Iron do? Ndi ara akwu eke. Awon werey.”

In response to Igbokwe’s comments, Rudeboy fired back on Sunday via his Instagram story.

He wrote, “Joe Igbokwe, your Papa. Elder wey mumu. Focus on the country wey you put mouth scatter. People and hungry.”

Supreme Court’s verdict: Oyo council chairmen pull out of ALGON

0

The 33 council chairmen in Oyo State have pulled out of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) over the Supreme Court’s judgment granting fiscal autonomy to local governments across the country.
In a communiqué, the chairmen unanimously declared their support for Governor Seyi Makinde.
The state ALGON’s Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Akintayo, described the chairmen’s stance as solidarity with Governor Makinde’s recent stand on local government autonomy as ruled by the apex court.
They attributed their loyalty to Makinde for his exemplary leadership and unrivaled achievements since his assumption of office.
TVN recalls that Governor Makinde, during a meeting with some stakeholders after the court ruling, constituted committees to review the apex court’s ruling on local government autonomy.
“I called this meeting because I felt that even though we have not seen the Certified True Copy of the judgment of the Supreme Court, we have to be proactive and discuss the decision of the Supreme Court as it concerns the financial autonomy of the local government councils because I believe a lacuna has been created between the decision and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that we all swore to uphold.
“The law is the law, and when there is a conflict, yes, we should go to court. But it behooves us to look for our own home-grown solutions that can ensure we have transparency and that our people do not suffer. This is because when two elephants are fighting, it is the grass that will suffer,” the governor stated.

Turkish inflation falls to 61.78% in July

0
Turkish inflation falls to 61.78% in July

It is the second consecutive fall after consumer price rises eased to 71.6 per cent in June.

“Annual inflation is falling,” Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek said on the social media platform X.

“We continue to get positive results in all areas of our programme, whose main objective is disinflation,” he said.

“The decrease in inflation will be felt more in the coming period.”

The central bank began raising interest rates to battle inflation last year after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan dropped his opposition to orthodox monetary policy.

The bank kept borrowing costs unchanged at 50 per cent for a fourth consecutive month in July.

Inflation traditionally eases during summer in Turkey, as energy consumption falls and tourism brings in foreign currencies.

While the annual inflation rate eased in July, it rose by 3.23 per cent compared to June. It had increased by 1.64 per cent every month in June.

Education, housing, health, hotels, and restaurants saw the biggest price increases.

PM Starmer to hold emergency meeting

0
PM Starmer to hold emergency meeting

UK leader Keir Starmer will hold an emergency response meeting on Monday after further far-right riots broke out across England over the weekend following the murder of three children last week.

The prime minister will chair a Cobra meeting, which will bring together ministers and the police to discuss how to quell the violence that first broke out in Southport, northwest England, on Tuesday, and has now seen hundreds of people arrested.

The town was the scene of last Monday’s tragedy in which three young girls were killed and five more children critically injured during a knife attack as they attended a Taylor Swift-themed dance class.

Other riots have broken out in towns and cities across the country, with anti-immigration demonstrators facing off against police, and Muslim counter-protestors in some instances.

Starmer warned far-right protesters on Sunday that they would “regret” participating in England’s worst rioting in 13 years, while his interior minister Yvette Cooper told the BBC on Monday that “there will be a reckoning”.

Police have blamed the violence on supporters and associated organisations of the English Defence League, an anti-Islam organisation founded 15 years ago whose supporters have been linked to football hooliganism.

Some of the worst violence on Sunday broke out in Rotherham, northern England, where masked demonstrators smashed several windows at a hotel that has been used to house asylum seekers.

At least 10 officers were injured, including one who was knocked unconscious, said South Yorkshire Police.

There were also large scuffles in Bolton, northwest England, and Middlesbrough, northeast England, where rioters smashed windows of houses and cars, leading to 43 arrests.

Protesters there seized a camera from an AFP crew and broke it. The journalists were not injured.

Late on Sunday, Staffordshire police said another hotel known to have sheltered asylum seekers was targeted near Birmingham.

“A large group of individuals” have been “throwing projectiles, smashing windows, starting fires and targeting police” at the hotel in the town of Tamworth, with one officer injured, said the statement.

Shops looted, burnt

The violence is a major challenge for Starmer, elected only a month ago after leading Labour to a landslide win over the Conservatives.

“I guarantee you will regret taking part in this disorder. Whether directly or those whipping up this action online, and then running away themselves,” Starmer said in a TV address on Sunday.

There was “no justification” for what he called “far-right thuggery”, promising to bring the perpetrators “to justice”.

The fresh disturbances came after police said more than 150 people had been arrested since Saturday following skirmishes at far-right rallies.

Rioters threw bricks, bottles and flares at police — injuring several officers — and looted and burnt shops, while demonstrators shouted anti-Islamic slurs as they clashed with counter-protesters.

The violence is the worst England had seen since the summer of 2011 when widespread rioting followed the police killing of a mixed-race man in north London.

Christian, Muslim and Jewish religious leaders in Liverpool issued a joint appeal for calm.

‘Wake-up call’

Authorities have said the initial violence was partly caused by false rumours on social media about the background of British-born 17-year-old suspect Axel Rudakubana, who is accused of killing a six, seven, and nine-year-old, and injuring another 10 people.

Cooper said on Monday that social media had put a “rocket booster” under the violence.

Agitators have targeted at least two mosques, and Cooper on Sunday announced that the government was offering new emergency security to Islamic places of worship.

The rallies have been advertised on far-right social media channels under the banner “Enough is enough”.

Participants waved English and British flags while chanting slogans like “Stop the boats” — a reference to irregular migrants crossing the Channel to Britain from France.

Anti-fascist demonstrators have held counter rallies in many cities.

Not all the gatherings have turned violent. A peaceful one in Aldershot, southern England, on Sunday, saw participants hold placards that read “Stop the invasion” and “We’re not far right, we’re just right”.

At last month’s election, the Reform UK party led by Brexit cheerleader Nigel Farage captured 14 per cent of the vote — one of the largest vote shares for a hard-right British party.
