A team leader of the Bauchi North zone #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest, Isah Zaki, has expressed the team’s dissatisfaction with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Sunday nationwide broadcast.

The good governance activist who spoke to our correspondent on the development said Tinubu’s broadcast failed to address the protesters’ agitations.

He said, “The president’s broadcast has not captured or mentioned any solutions to the demands of the poor masses. The only reason we are considering the relaxation of the protest in Bauchi North follows hoodlum activities during the protest which have done more harm to our businessmen.

“The broadcast did not, of course, address our demands and that of poor masses, but we have decided to listen to Mr president considering the unfortunate activities of hoodlums in parts of the protest.

“Also, we may suspend the protest and give room for dialogue as the president requested because we have the knowledge that every battle always ends in meaningful dialogue.”

Zaki added “In the event where the dialogue did work, we all call on our national assembly representatives to do the needful.

“That is what they are voted for, to speak on our behalf. In the President’s speech, it is clear that he does not understand our demands. We may give a chance for dialogue as I said, but if he doesn’t do the need, our national representatives in both green and red chambers must do the needful.

“Tell him the truth about our situation, or recall them back to vote for those that are equal to the task,” Zaki insisted.

He reiterated that the protest relaxation in Bauchi North was not in compliance with the President’s request but for consideration of the trouble some individuals, especially business owners, were landed in by hoodlums.

INEC registers 177,914 new voters ahead of Edo, Ondo gov. polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced the finalised figures for newly registered voters ahead of the upcoming Edo and Ondo State Governorship elections.

The final count revealed that Edo State has 119,206 new voters, while Ondo State has 58,708.

The National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, announced in a press release issued on Monday.

Following the initial release of preliminary numbers on June 11, 2024, INEC has completed the data verification process using the Automated Biometric Identification System.

“Nigerians may recall that in our Press Statement on Tuesday 11th June 2024, we released the preliminary figures of newly registered voters for the forthcoming Edo and Ondo State Governorship elections before the period for claims and objections, followed by the cleaning up of the data using the Automated Biometric Identification System. These processes have now been concluded.

“The number of new voters for Edo State is 119,206 and 58,708 for Ondo State,” Olumekun noted.

However, the commission stated that the figures excluded the 8,847 applications for voter transfers into Edo State and 3,132 into Ondo State from other parts of the country.

In addition to these new registrations, applications for transfers within Edo and Ondo States have already been integrated into the voter register.

“These figures do not include the 8,847 applications for transfer into Edo State and the 3,132 into Ondo State from other States of the Federation.

“Similarly, they do not include applications for transfer within the two States because they are already captured on the register of voters.

“The figures of the new voters and inter-state transfers are being integrated into the existing register,” the statement read in part.

INEC will release the comprehensive and final register of voters for both states in the coming days.

“In the next few days, the Commission will release the comprehensive and final register of voters to be used for the 2024 Governorship elections for each of the two States,” he noted.

For public transparency, detailed analyses of the new voters, broken down by local government areas, gender, age, occupation, and disability status, have been uploaded to INEC’s website and social media platforms, the national commissioner added.

The Edo election is slated to take place on September 21, 2024. Seventeen political parties are presenting candidates for the election.

The Ondo election is scheduled to take place on November 16, 2024. Seventeen political parties fielded candidates, but notably, no female candidates were among the governorship candidates.

Security operatives have dispersed protesters in the Karu area of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, after several attempts
The protesters were said to have started assembling when security agents went after them and arrested three.
An eyewitness, Ibrahim Sani, said the police had to fire teargas to calm the situation before arrests were made.
“I was shocked when I saw some people gathering at Karu. I thought the gathering was supposed to be in town. The police came and dispersed the protesters with teargas. They arrested about three people that I saw,” he said
It was gathered that security operatives are everywhere in the nation’s capital to monitor the situation and prevent the breakdown of law and order.
There had been an increased vehicular movement on day five of the nationwide protests in FCT, however, government offices are still deserted.
It was also observed that the Federal secretariat in Abuja is open, but most officials of Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, are few in the offices.
This may not be unconnected with the fear that protesters may return and clash with security operatives.
Similarly, security personnel were said to have also fired teargas at protesters at the Moshood Abiola Stadium over agitation to move to town.

Kano grains market recruits 800 to boost security

The management of Dawanau International Grains Market in Dawakin Toda Local Government Area of Kano State has taken a step to secure the market by engaging over 800 additional security personnel.

The President of the market association, Alhaji Muntaka Isa, told the News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) in a telephone interview on Monday that the measure would effectively protect the market from vandalism and theft.

Isa highlighted the collaborative efforts of the Nigerian Army, Police, and state security agencies, which have significantly enhanced the market’s security.

He said an additional 400 vigilance group members were working alongside the security personnel to safeguard the market.

The market has faced threats from hoodlums in neighbouring areas, such as Kurnan Asabe and Bachirawa, who had attempted to enter and steal food items forcefully.

To counter this, the market has hired 400 vigilance group members to support the security agencies.

Isa said the market’s management was committed to supporting the security personnel deployed to protect public buildings against vandalism.

Isa further urged the residents of the neighbouring communities to assist the security personnel by providing credible information on the movement of hoodlums.

According to him, this is with the view to ensuring the safety and security of the market, its public and its critical stakeholders.

The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu to stop apportioning blames following the protest against him administration.
Afenifere said Tinubu called for a revolution against former President Goodluck Jonathan, hence should not apportion blame now.
Prince Justice Fakiyesi, National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere loyal to the Acting Leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, said the president’s speech did not address the real issues of the nationwide hunger.
Fakiyesi noted that it was disingenuous for Tinubu to claim that the nationwide protest was politically motivated when he did same under Jonathan.
Addressing newsmen on Monday, he said: “It is the same thing that happened under former President Goodluck Jonathan and he (Tinubu) called for a revolution or protest and when he is facing the same thing and even worse, he is blaming other people.
“We never believed that just calling for dialogue would change anything. He has never changed.
“I think he was pushed to read the speech because it was not a matter of dialogue or him addressing people about the exact policy that brought hunger and since he is not willing to reverse or accept responsibility, because he more or less said it was politically motivated.
“When he started, and he specifically said that subsidy is dead, he said you can protest as much as you like. He said that. He knew that his policies were going to bring protest. At his age he knows that there have been all sorts of protests against subsidy removal.”

Reactions have trailed the release of controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos State.

The social media celebrity was released on Monday morning after serving six months imprisonment.

In a video sighted by our correspondent X, Bobrisky was seen greeting his fans, who came to give him a welcoming reception.

According Online reported in April that Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos jailed Bobrisky for Naira abuse.

Justice Awogboro, who sentenced the cross-dresser without an option of a fine, said his sentence would serve as a lesson for others abusing the Naira.

Following the development, some netizens took to X.com to express their reactions to the crossdresser’s release from the correctional centre.

On X, a user, @toolzmoney, wrote, “Bobrisky after finally regaining his freedom. Una sure say this guy go prison??”

One tweep, OSG, posting as @OloriSupergal, wrote, “Bobrisky aka Mummy of Laygurrrrrrsssss is back!!!!”

One X.com user, Chioma Agwuegbo, posting as @ChiomaChuka, wrote, “A reminder that Bobrisky’s incarceration was unjust, heavy-handed, and can be described as targeted. There are several videos of politicians, their families, & politically exposed persons spraying naira; NONE of them have been arrested or jailed. A bad thing is a bad thing.”

An X user, Motara Lawrence, posting as @_theladymo wrote, “Bobrisky looks really fresh out of prison, be like say all of us go enter prison o.”

Speaking with journalists shortly after his release, Bobrisky has advised Nigerians to obey the laws of the country and respect the Naira.

The crossdresser warned Nigerians against abusing the Naira in order not to end up in prison, adding that the country’s currency should be respected at all times.

He said, “You have to follow the rules and abide by the laws. Don’t spray money, or you will become a landlord in Kirikiri.

“It is not just about killing or any criminal activity that can bring you to prison. Something light as spaying of naira can take you there.”

Bobrisky added, “I’m only focusing on my good energy right now on people who were there for me, like my friends. You see, any other person, I’m not interested. So, I don’t want to talk about them. I’m really grateful to my friends and loved ones.”

Senators mull youths empowerment programmes

As the ongoing #Endbadgovernance nationwide protests entered day five on Monday a former senator from Ondo State, Ayo Akinyelure has disclosed that he and 15 senators would be coming up with a programme to empower many youths across the six geopolitical zones of the country.

 

Akinyelure who represented the Ondo Central Senatorial District of Ondo State between 2011-2015 and 2019 -2023 at the senate, said the programme was to support the Tinubu administration in ameliorating the suffering of the people.

 

The former federal lawmaker and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress stated this in a statement issued on Monday.

 

The statement was titled, ‘Press release to the great youths of Ondo state on the ongoing national protest on hunger and unemployment’.

 

Akinyelure who commended the youths in Ondo State for peacefully handling the protest, said the proposed #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria: Senators seek empowerment programmes for Nigerian youths

 

He said, “Let me use this medium to assure you that very soon youth unemployment will be a thing of the past in Ondo State and Nigeria in general. The planned programmes of President Bola Tinubu when fully rolled out and implemented, I am sure the people of our great country will be celebrating him as a great leader of our time.

“That is why I have stayed in Abuja more this period to give support indirectly to his administration to succeed by working underground as the National Committee Chairman of voices of supporters of Tinubu-Shettima government with my other distinguished 15 senators colleagues from six geopolitical zones of the country. We are working seriously to develop some youth empowerment programs that will soon be unfolded in all the six geopolitical zones of our great nation with the approval of the National Chairman of APC to make a big difference.”

 

Commending the Ondo State Governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, for working with security agencies by maintaining law and order during the protest, Akinyelure called on the governor to utilise the natural resources in the state for the industrialisation of the state to create more revenue for the government and provide mass employment for the youths of the state.

 

“The state government should also work in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Solid Mineral and Natural Resources to tap the exploration of bitumen deposits in Ondo State which is said to be the second largest deposit in the whole world. This will provide over 5,000 – 10,000 youth employment in the state and as a permanent source of internal revenue generation for the state in perpetuity.

 

“In addition, the state government should focus on how to industrialise the state by inviting investors for the development of a seaport and refinery in the Olokola area of Ondo South Senatorial district that was negligently abandoned through greed by the past administration in the state. This will lead to massive employment generation of our youth to solve unemployment problems ravaging the state”, he implored.

Controversial crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has been released from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre.

Bobrisky was released on Monday, after spending six months in incarceration for abusing the naira by spraying it at parties.

In an interview with GoldMyneTV after his release, Bobrisky said, “Follow the rules, abide with the law. Don’t spray money, unless you’ll be a landlord inside kirikiri.”

He added, “It’s not just about killing or any criminal activity, something light like this can take you there.

“I’m only focusing on my friends who were there for me, and I’m grateful. I’m not thinking about any other person.”

Recall that he was sentenced to six months imprisonment on April 12, 2024, for abusing the naira.

At the court, Bobrisky had told the judge, “My Lord, I wish that you could give me a second chance to use my platform to inform and educate my followers about spraying money.

“I would do a video on my page and I will educate people about spraying money. I will not repeat this, My Lord. I regret my actions, My Lord.”

CSOs to monitor NNPC compliance on crude sale

A coalition of Civil Society Organisations has announced their intention to closely monitor the compliance of the Nigerian National Petroleum Limited in its crude oil sales to the Dangote Refinery.

This move, according to the CSOs aims to ensure transparency and adherence to regulatory standards in the dealings between the state oil company and the privately owned refinery.

The CSOs made their accusation known during a facility tour of the 650,000 bpd refinery in Lagos.

Speaking, Solomon Adodo of the Rise Up for A United Nigeria, spoke on behalf of the 28 CSOs through a statement issued on Monday.

Adodo expressed dismay over the government’s apparent reluctance to support the local refinery, despite its potential to alleviate the nation’s fuel crisis and foreign exchange challenges.

The group further accused the NNPCL of disregarding President Bola Tinubu’s directive to sell crude oil to the Dangote Refinery in Naira.

The CSOs vowed to intensify advocacy efforts to compel the government to prioritise the Dangote Refinery and ensure its smooth operation.

The statement read, “The disposition of the NNPCL and the regulatory agencies is a clear indication that they deliberately held down the nation’s refineries so that they could continue importing petroleum products.

“Having gone round to see this world-class project, we are at a loss as to why the government could decide to turn against Nigerians in this manner.

“We are ready to defend this facility with everything as civil society organizations.

“We are going to set up a situation room to monitor the compliance of the NNPCL with the directive of Mr President that Dangote Refinery would be supplied with Crude in Naira because we know that the enemies of the people would want to adopt another strategy to sabotage the presidential directive.”

The Vice President of Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, echoed the CSOs’ concerns, highlighting the refinery’s potential to transform Nigeria’s economy.

“This is what Dangote refinery seeks to correct, we did the same in the Cement and Sugar sectors where Nigeria was a leading importer of those products and with the coming of Dangote leading the backward integration programme of the government, others came into the sector and together Nigeria now exports cement to other countries,” Edwin explained.

Despite facing numerous challenges, including difficulties in securing crude oil supply, the Dangote Refinery remains committed to its vision of transforming Nigeria’s petroleum industry, according to Edwin.
