Power generation hits three-year high of 5,105MW

0

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has announced that Nigeria’s power sector generated 5,105 megawatts of electricity on July 27, 2024, describing it as a three-year high.

Adelabu announced this at the inaugural meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Power Sector Working Group in Abuja on Wednesday.

While highlighting the recent achievements and future goals for the power sector, the minister said, “Just a few days ago, on July 27, we successfully generated and transmitted 5,105MW of power, the highest in the last three years. This is an improvement from the previous capacity of around 4,000MW or below.

“Our target is to achieve a landmark generation and transmission of 6,000MW by December.”

To harness the economic potential of Nigeria’s power sector, the government ministers at the meeting called for increased collaboration across various ministries and sectors.

They emphasised the sector’s crucial role in driving economic growth and industrialisation, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s vision.

Adelabu underscored the necessity of inter-ministerial collaboration to achieve these objectives.

“Power is not something that should be left alone to the Ministry of Power and its agencies. There are many supportive ministries without which we cannot achieve our mandate,” said Adelabu.

He said the power ministry is working closely with the Ministries of Environment, Water Resources and Sanitation, Budget and Planning, and Petroleum Resources, particularly the Minister of State (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, echoed the sentiment, stating, “The Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Power are like brothers and sisters. We will do everything possible to work together to achieve the renewable energy agenda of the President in making life better for Nigerians.”

Addressing the need for sustainable energy solutions, Adelabu highlighted the role of renewable energy sources.

“We are focusing on generating power in a sustainable and environment-friendly manner. This is why we talk about renewables, through solar, wind, and small dams,” he said.

The Minister of Environment, represented by Minister of State, Iziaq Salako, emphasised the environmental impact of power generation and the importance of managing waste generated in the process.

“As we go ahead to develop our power sector, we are also developing a process to manage the waste that will come out,” he said.

Adelabu outlined the terms of reference for the working group, which include activating seamless power sector liquidity and financing, providing guidance in the governance structure of electricity distribution companies, and focusing on the energy transition programme to achieve net zero emissions by 2060.

The collaborative efforts are set to not only boost power generation and distribution but also ensure that the benefits are felt by households, businesses, and industries across the country, the minister explained

FG to reverse technical, science colleges merger

0

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has expressed displeasure over the merging of technical colleges with colleges of science, saying it eroded the gains of establishing technical colleges across the country.

Mamman spoke this in Abuja on Wednesday at a one-day stakeholders’ meeting on “The Challenges and Issues Affecting Technical Colleges” in the country.

He said technical colleges ought to be strictly for pupils with an interest in technical education.

“At what stage do we have the technical colleges become science and technical colleges? They were supposed to be Federal Government Technical Schools.

“So, at what stage did we smuggle in science because I don’t understand? We know that science is very key to everything we are doing but that is not the agenda for this institution.

“Those who want to do science programmes should go to regular colleges and continue their programmes there. So it was clearly a mistake at whatever stage this decision was taken and with the rest of my colleagues minister of state, the permanent secretary, and the directors. We are going to take a hard look at this decision,” he said.

He bemoaned the low enrolment of students in the technical colleges, noting that technical colleges were to teach skills to transform the country.

“This is really important because the technical colleges are at the heart of what this ministry and government want to achieve for this country.

“It is about our educational system and as it has been said, when you’re able to achieve it in education, the nation succeeds.

“This is because we provide the primary manpower for the country which has an impact in all sectors of the country,” he said.

The minister, however, commended the Universal Basic Education Commission smart school initiative, saying it would provide the robust digitisation needed for the growth of the country.

After Ortom’s suspension, Benue PDP summons Suswam for probe

0

The crisis rocking the opposition Peoples Democratic Party in Benue State deepened on Wednesday as the State Working Committee of the party summoned ex-governor Gabriel Suswam and four others to be questioned for alleged anti-party activities.

The others invited are a former member of the House of Representatives, Terngu Tsegba, Richard Gbande, Terseer Tsumba and Prof Nicholas Ada, as well as nine local government chairmen of the party.

The development comes two days after the party announced the suspension of immediate-past Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom.

The embattled Benue PDP Chairman, John Ngbede, who was himself suspended for one month by a faction of the party, said on Tuesday that Ortom was suspended for attempting to hijack the leadership of the Benue PDP.

On Wednesday, party’s Publicity Secretary, Bemgba Iortyom, announced the invitation of Suswam and others to probe over alleged anti-party activities.

Iortyom, in a statement, said Suswam and others were expected to appear before the State Working Committee on Wednesday, August 7, 2024 “to give reason(s)  disciplinary action should not be taken against them for alleged gross misconduct and anti-party activities.”

Iortyom said, “The action has become necessary following the invasion of the party’s state secretariat in Makurdi yesterday (Tuesday) by thugs and hoodlums led by the suspended state chairman, John Ngbede, which credible intelligence revealed was under the sponsorship and support of the Suswam-led group.”

The party also accused Suswam of “sponsoring  factions,  publication of internal party disputes and sponsoring of court action against the party without recourse to the internal dispute resolution mechanisms of the party.”

Efforts by our correspondent to get Suswam’s reaction did not succeed as none of his aides could be reached on their mobile lines.

However, a former member of the House of Representatives, Tergun Tsegba, who is Suswam’s ally, challenged Iortyom’s standing to summon Suswam and others.

Tsegba noted that Iortyom had himself been suspended.

“It’s obvious that Bemgba is impersonating because he has been suspended by his ward and ratified by the court.

“Since he said we should appear before them at the party secretariat, ask him if he can step his foot on the secretariat,” Tsegba said.

Kaduna relaxes 24-hour curfew

0

The Kaduna State Security Council has relaxed the 24-hour curfew imposed on August 4, 2024, following a review of the security situation in the state.

According to a statement by the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, on Wednesday, the curfew will now be in effect from 6pm to 8am daily, allowing citizens to move freely and carry out their legitimate activities.

It said Governor Uba Sani-led Security Council decided to relax the curfew after improved security conditions in Kaduna and Zaria towns and their environs.

However, security forces would continue to enforce the curfew during the restricted hours and take decisive action against any actions that may lead to a breakdown of law and order.

“The relaxed curfew takes effect from Thursday, August 8, 2024,” the statement added.

It noted that the State Security Council reaffirmed its commitment to peace and security in the state and pledged to take all necessary steps to preserve them.

The development, the council said, was expected to bring relief to citizens who had been under a 24-hour curfew since August 4, 2024.

“The state government’s decision to relax the curfew is seen as a positive step towards restoring normalcy in the affected areas,” it added.

The statement titled, ‘Kaduna Security Council relaxes curfew; Curfew now 6 pm to 8 am, while citizens can move from 8 am to 6 pm,’ read, “The Kaduna State Security Council under the leadership of Governor Uba Sani, after a thorough review of the security situation in Kaduna and Zaria towns and environs, has unanimously agreed to relax the 24-hour curfew earlier imposed on Monday 4th August 2024.

“By this review, the curfew will now be in effect from 6 pm to 8 am daily. This implies that citizens may move freely and carry out their legitimate activities between 8 am and 6 pm, and will revert to the curfew from 6 pm to 8 am

“The Kaduna State Security Council reiterates its total commitment to the peace and security of the State and will continue to take all steps deemed necessary for their preservation.

“Furthermore, the security forces will continue to vigorously enforce the curfew from 6 pm to 8 am and will be decisive in confronting actions which may lead to a breakdown of law and order during periods of movement as well as restriction.

“This is with effect from tomorrow, Thursday 8th August 2024.”

Kano Emir knocks youths for looting printing press, NCC building

0

The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, on Wednesday, lamented the destruction of the oldest printing press in the ancient city of Kano, describing it as a wicked attempt to wipe out the monumental edifice.

He explained that his great-grandfather and grandfather worked at the printing press which was built in 1933.

Also, Sanusi expressed dismay over the wanton destruction of the Nigeria Communication Commission building.

The monarch stated these on Wednesday while assessing the level of damage to the printing press, including the NCC Industrial Digital Park during the hunger protests.

“Security was alerted to the intelligence reports that the office would be attacked. It is therefore surprising that four days before the attack, security was alerted, and until the time the target was attacked, nothing was done by the security. This calls for a real investigation into what happened.

“It is clear that some people are hellbent on destroying Kano, and God knows them, and sooner than later, they will be exposed and will fully fail,” the monarch.

While speaking at the premises of the NCC Industrial Digital Park, Emir Sanusi urged Kano youths to open their hearts to know who loves them and who their enemies are.

“All those who gave you money to act negatively against the state, their children are studying outside the country, and the place was supposed to have been commissioned today, Wednesday, but it was destroyed.

“We are highly pained by what has happened to the NCC facility, but we are assured that the Federal Government will soon rebuild the place. However, we urge Kano youths to shun every negative tendency that was targeted at them,” the monarch said.

US end Nigeria’s dream run in Olympics basketball quarter-finals

0

The United States edged closer to an unprecedented eighth straight women’s basketball Olympic crown on Wednesday, ending the historic run of Nigeria with an 88-74 quarter-final victory.

Two-time WNBA Most Valuable Player A’Ja Wilson scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pace a US side that could break a tie with the US men’s basketball team for the most consecutive Olympic golds — set from 1936-68.

Jackie Young added 15 points and Breanna Stewart — another two-time WNBA MVP chipped in 13.

The US will face Australia in the semi-finals on Friday after the Opals saw off Serbia 85-67.

France beat Olympic newcomers Germany 84-71 to set up a semi-final against European champions Belgium, 79-66 winners over previously unbeaten Spain.

France, led by 24 points from Marine Johannes, delighted fans, but the United States were the big draw at Bercy Arena.

NBA superstar LeBron James and USA teammate Bam Adebayo were courtside for the clash between the US dynasty and the first team from Africa, male or female, to make the Olympic basketball quarter-finals.

James and Adebayo, enjoying a night off before tackling Serbia in the men’s semi-finals on Thursday, sat next to US swimming greats Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky.

Nigeria, who have made physical play a trademark, looked anything but intimidated by the powerhouse Americans as they traded buckets in the opening minutes.

Diana Taurasi trying to become the first Olympic basketball player to win six gold medals, came off the bench and drilled a three-pointer to put the US up 24-12 late in the first quarter.

A steal and a layup by Promise Amukamara cut the deficit to single digits but every time Nigeria seemed to be making headway the Americans answered with a run.

They closed the first half on a 14-4 surge. Breanna Stewart drained a three-pointer then got loose for a layup in the final minute to push the US lead to 52-33 at the break.

The US launched the third quarter with a 10-0 run and pushed the lead to 76-46 before Amukamara came up with a steal and raced the length of the court for a layup to end the quarter.

In the end, the United States just had too much firepower, but the trail-blazing Nigerians, who were led by 19 points from Amukamara with 16 from Ezinne Kalu, departed to a warm ovation from fans.

Next up for the United States is Australia, who had 22 points and 13 rebounds from Alanna Smith in a convincing victory over Serbia.

The Australians, silver medallists in 2000, 2004 and 2008, are into the semi-finals for the first time since 2012 when they earned bronze.

– ‘Throwing the first punch’ –

Australia connected on 58 per cent of their shots in the first half, out-scoring Serbia 22-11 in the second quarter to take control for good.

“In tournaments like this, how you start is how you finish, and we wanted to come out throwing the first punch,” Smith said.

Belgium, who reached the semi-finals for the first time, face a tough clash against Tokyo bronze medallists France.

The hosts returned to the semi-finals in impressive style, Johannes putting on an offensive show with plenty of support from Gabby Williams and Alexia Cherry.

France took control with a 17-5 scoring run to open the second quarter and led by as many as 19 in the fourth.

Nyara Sabally, sidelined since suffering a head injury in Germany’s opener, returned to score 20 points.

But in the face of France’s feisty defense a German team that led in three-point shooting in the group connected on just four of 14 attempts from beyond the arc.

Fans at Bercy Arena were already celebrating as the final seconds ticked down when a man tried to dash onto the court. He was quickly tackled by security and hustled away.

Israel vows to get mastermind of October 7 attack

0

Israel has vowed to get the new Hamas chief, Yahya Sinwar, the alleged mastermind of the October 7 attack, whose appointment further inflamed regional tensions as the Gaza war entered its 11th month on Wednesday.

The naming of Sinwar to lead the Palestinian militant group came as Israel braced for potential Iranian retaliation over the killing of his predecessor Ismail Haniyeh last week in Tehran.

Speaking at a military base on Wednesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was “determined” to defend itself.

“We are prepared both defensively and offensively,” he told new recruits.

Army chief, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi vowed to “find him (Sinwar), attack him” and force Hamas to find another leader.

Sinwar — Hamas’s leader in Gaza since 2017 — has not been seen since the October 7 attack, which was the deadliest in Israel’s history.

A senior Hamas official told AFP that the selection of Sinwar sent a message that the organisation “continues its path of resistance”.

Hamas’s Lebanese ally Hezbollah congratulated Sinwar and said the appointment affirms “the enemy… has failed to achieve its objectives” by killing Hamas leaders and officials.

Analysts believe Sinwar has been both more reluctant to agree to a Gaza ceasefire and closer to Tehran than Haniyeh, who lived in Qatar.

“If a ceasefire deal seemed unlikely upon Haniyeh’s death, it is even less likely under Sinwar,” according to Rita Katz, executive director of the SITE Intelligence Group.

“The group will only lean further into its hardline militant strategy of recent years,” she added.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters that it was up to Sinwar to help achieve a ceasefire, saying he “has been and remains the primary decider”.

Civilians in both Israel and Gaza met Sinwar’s appointment with unease.

Mohammad al-Sharif, a displaced Gazan, told AFP: “He is a fighter. How will negotiations take place?”

In Tel Aviv, logistics company manager Hanan, who did not want to give his second name, said Sinwar’s appointment meant Hamas “did not see fit to look for someone less militant, someone with a less murderous approach”.

Hezbollah vows response –

Iran-backed Hezbollah has also pledged to avenge the deaths of Haniyeh and its own military commander Fuad Shukr in an Israeli strike in Beirut hours earlier.

In a televised address to mark one week since Shukr’s death, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said Tuesday his group would retaliate “alone or in the context of a unified response from all the axis” of Iran-backed groups in the region.

The United States, which has sent extra warships and jets to the region, urged both Iran and Israel to avoid an escalation.

President Joe Biden had calls with Jordan’s King Abdullah II, the Qatari emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Tuesday.

“No one should escalate this conflict. We’ve been engaged in intense diplomacy with allies and partners, communicating that message directly to Iran. We communicated that message directly to Israel,” Blinken told reporters.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron in a telephone call that the West “should immediately stop selling arms and supporting” Israel if it wants to prevent war, his office said.

The Jeddah-based Organisation of Islamic Cooperation on Wednesday said Israel was “fully responsible” for the “heinous attack” that killed Haniyeh, which it described as “a serious infringement” of Iran’s sovereignty.

Gambian Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara, whose country currently chairs the bloc, said the “heinous” killing of Haniyeh risked “leading to a wider conflict that could involve the entire region”.

A Saudi diplomat called Haniyeh’s killing a “flagrant violation” of Iran’s sovereignty.

Israel has not commented on Haniyeh’s killing but confirmed it had carried out the strike on Shukr.

It held the Hezbollah commander responsible for a rocket attack in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights that killed 12 children.

Flights cancelled –

Hezbollah has traded near-daily cross-border fire with Israeli troops throughout the Gaza war.

On Wednesday, a Lebanese security source said that a Hezbollah fighter and a civilian were killed in an Israeli strike near Jouaiyya close to the border. The Israeli military said it had eliminated a Hamas commander in the area.

Numerous airlines have suspended flights to Lebanon or limited them to daylight hours, while Egypt said Iran had warned civilian airlines to steer clear of its airspace as it will be conducting military exercises overnight.

The United Nations said it was “temporarily” reducing the presence of UN staff family members in Lebanon, although it was not moving its staff.

The Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip, triggered by the Palestinian group’s unprecedented October 7 attack on Israel, has already drawn in Iran-backed militants in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen.

The Hamas attack resulted in the deaths of 1,198 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures.

Palestinian militants seized 251 hostages, 111 of whom are still held in Gaza, including 39 the Israeli military says are dead.

Israel’s retaliatory military campaign in Gaza has killed at least 39,677 people, according to the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry, which does not give details of civilian and militant deaths.

The toll included two dozen deaths in the past 24 hours, according to ministry figures.

Israel said its air force had “struck dozens of terror targets throughout the Gaza Strip” over the past day.

NSCDC nabs 12 for vandalism in FCT

0

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Federal has arrested 12 individuals suspected of vandalising critical infrastructure amid the ongoing nationwide hunger protest.

The arrests took place across various locations in Abuja, according to a statement signed by the NSCDC Federal Capital Territory Command Spokesperson, Samuel Idoko, on Wednesday.

The suspects were arrested between August 5, and, 7,
2024.

The statement read, “The Nigeria Security And Civil Defence Corps, Federal Capital Territory Command has apprehended 12 suspected vandals in different parts of Abuja during the Nationwide hunger protest.

“The suspects were arrested between Monday, 5th and Wednesday, 7th August 2024,” the statement read in part.

“Three suspects were apprehended while attempting to damage infrastructure at the Moshood Abiola Stadium. They were caught scaling the facility’s fence, while others fled upon noticing the approaching officers.

“In the Jabi area, four individuals were detained for trying to vandalise street lights.

“The arrests were made during the Command’s vigilant routine patrols during the protest.

“Additionally, a scavenger, identified as Baban-bola, was picked up at about 3:30 a.m. on the newly commissioned Wuye bridge in Mabushi.

“He was detained for wandering and suspected vandalism after failing to explain his suspicious presence at such an hour.

“Based on intelligence from undercover operatives, four more suspects were arrested in Kuje while vandalizing an electrical installation.”

The FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, emphasised that anyone caught vandalising government property would face severe legal consequences.

“Vandalism is a threat to our socio-economic well-being; it causes retrogression in the society, and we will do all within our power as an agency to ensure that any act inimical to our collective growth and development is nipped in the bud,” he stated.

The FCT Commandant called on residents to report any suspicious activity related to vandalism, underscoring that safeguarding critical national assets is a shared responsibility.

He also urged the youths in Abuja to engage in dialogue rather than resort to the destruction of public property, which he argued causes more harm than good to the public.

The nationwide protest, which commenced on Thursday, August 1, was in response to the hardship experienced by citizens in the country.

Several major highways were blocked, exacerbating the situation.

The #EndBadGovernance protests, which gained momentum in major cities such as Kano, Gombe, Yobe, Borno, Niger, Kebbi, Abuja, and other northern towns, were marked by escalating violence.

In some instances, security officials’ actions were the catalyst for the violence, while in other cases, it has been driven by overzealous protesters or counter-protesters.

Again, Edo govt, APC clash over rice looted by #EndBadGovernance protesters

0

The Edo State government has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of planning to cause unrest in the state.
The Commissioner of Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, stated this at a media briefing on Wednesday in Benin City.
The commissioner alleged that the APC had resorted to inciting the public that the Federal Government gave many truckloads of rice to the state government for the people but the rice was now with some chieftains of PDP.
Nehikhare said the state government knew nothing about rice looted by protesters from a warehouse on August 1.
The Edo State government and APC had also clashed over the looted rice last week.
“Our findings reveal that the APC plans to incite civil unrest and cause chaos under the guise of riots and protests to disrupt the peace and stability of the state.
APC is trying to divert attention from its candidate’s weaknesses and buying time to avoid debates and meaningful engagement with the people,” he said.
Nehikhare said the government had alerted police and the Department of State Services (DSS) about the plan.
However, the Director of Publicity for the APC Campaign Council in the state, Orobosa Omo-Ojo, denied the allegation.
He said Governor Godwin Obaseki was being haunted by the ghost of the #EndBadGovernance protest he allegedly sponsored in the state.
Omo-Ojo said the alleged sponsored protest led to the discovery of hidden federal government’s palliative in a PDP leader’s house in Benin.
“The fear of losing the entire hidden grains has led to Obaseki’s sudden hatred for organisers of the protest who he now calls hoodlums and thugs,” the APC chieftain added.
He urged the people of Edo to reject the PDP and its candidate in the September 21 poll, alleging that Asue Ighodalo would be worse than Obaseki if elected.
