Tinubu’s aides at war over old video

0

Two of President Bola Tinubu’s aides, Bayo Onanuga and O’tega Ogra are at logger heads following an old video that was posted on X yesterday by Ogra who is a Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media.
In the video posted on Ogra’s X handle on Wednesday afternoon, President Tinubu is seen urging Nigerians to be patient as he is working hard to turn around the pains and hardship in the country.
Ogra had captioned the video,
“A Passionate Plea from President Bola Tinubu @officialABAT to all Nigerians,” making it look like it was a recent video by Tinubu.
“As we navigate through these temporary pains, please remember that every effort is being made to ensure a stable and prosperous future for all Nigerians,” Tinubu is heard saying.

However, on Wednesday night, there was a twist to the video when Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, posted the same video with a different text, this time saying it was an old video as Tinubu has not spoken since his nationwide address on Sunday.
“Trending video of President Tinubu is an old video,” Onanuga wrote.
He went on to explain further:
“A trending video of President Tinubu which came out on Wednesday is not a new video. It’s a clip from the broadcast he made last year.
“President Tinubu has not made any other public statement since his last broadcast on Sunday,” he added.

Nigerian govt takes delivery of Jet Motor hybrid vehicles for mass transit

0

In continuation of efforts to provide affordable and comfortable transport solution for Nigerians, the federal government on Wednesday received fleets of hybrid Jet Mover buses from Jet Motor Company, an indigenous car manufacturing company.
The hybrid Jet Mover runs on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) commonly called PMS.

The vehicles were handed over to a team made up of officials from the Ministry of Finance and representatives of the Presidential Initiative for Compressed Natural Gas (P-CNGi) during a brief ceremony at the company’s plant in Ajah area of Lagos State.
Speaking at the event, Dimas Hamidu, the Technical Assistant to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance acknowledged the good quality of the Jet Mover vehicles, and commended the company for its good work.
He said the hybrid vehicles were a testimony to the commitment of the President Ahmed Bola Tinubu administration to alleviate the hardships that may have been brought on with the removal of fuel subsidy.
According to him, the vehicles will go a long way in helping to solve the transportation needs of the citizens, and help to cushion the impact of rising costs in the economy.
“I’m happy with what I’ve seen here. This will go a long way in alleviating the pains and sufferings of the people with the removal of fuel subsidy”.
Hamidu recalled, “I was here earlier with the Honorable minister of finance, and we were taken round the plant. The minister even drove one of the vehicles, and he was very impressed.”

He also noted that the federal government had awarded contract of the CNG vehicles to different companies to deliver different number of units.
“Nigerians were becoming agitated, and asking why they were not seeing these vehicles on the road. This is why the ministry of finance decided to have a tour of the factories, and their facilities to see how soon they can deliver. We are impressed with Jet Motor for sticking to the terms of the contract, and the vehicles are in accordance with specification”.
Hamidu, while noting that some contractors had complained of challenges, said the ministry was ready to step in to ensure that the CNG vehicles were delivered on time.
“A few weeks ago when we had a meeting with the contractors, they complained of a number of challenges. Some complained of SON (Standard organisation of Nigeria), others complained about issues with Customs to clear their goods, but Jet Motor did not lodge any complaints because they were on top of their game.
“And, we hope that very soon they will invite us again to take delivery of more of these vehicles that the president can use to alleviate the transportation challenges of the country”.

Also speaking at the event, Derek Ewelukwa, managing director of Jet Motor Company thanked the team for the opportunity to contribute in the delivery of an efficient and comfortable transport model to the citizens of the country.
He explained that each of the hybrid vehicles had two CNG tanks with a combined capacity of 220 liters of gas and capable of doing 300 kilometres, and a petrol tank with capacity for 80 litres.
According to him, the CNG tanks have a lifespan of 15 years, and the engine switches from gas to petrol and back seamlessly.
Other members of the team from the Finance ministry included, Balarabe Tukui, representing the director, Finance and Account; Okeke Osita Gabriel, also a Technical Assistant to the Minister of Finance and Mr Suleman, representing the Director, Legal Services, while Oluwole Akinwunmi represented the Pi-CNG.

Immigration suspends officer seeking bribe from traveller

0

The Nigeria Immigration Service has suspended an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II, Okpravero Ufuoma, for allegedly soliciting financial gratification from a traveller.

NIS Comptroller General, Mrs Kemi Nandap, made this known in a statement issued by the Service Public Relations Officer, Mr Kenneth Udo, on Thursday in Abuja.

According to Nandap, the officer’s conduct, captured in a video circulating on social media, does not reflect the values and ethics of professionalism upheld by the NIS.

She condemned the alleged misconduct, saying that it undermined the ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing service standards.

She, however, assured all that the officer had been indefinitely suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures, in accordance with the law and Public Service Rules.

She said NIS received a video currently circulating on social media titled “This is how immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria,” showing one of its officers soliciting financial gratification from a traveller.

“This disgraceful act is not a representation of our commitment to hospitality, reception, and courtesy.

“As a result, the officer in question has been indefinitely suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures,” she said.

The NIS boss also reiterated the NIS commitment to identifying and removing corrupt elements within its ranks, in line with its zero-tolerance for corruption policy.

The comptroller general further assured all that the NIS would continue to strive for excellence in service delivery, in alignment with the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ of the Federal Government.

Nandap added that electronic gates (e-gates) are being installed at all international airports to facilitate smoother travel for passengers and prevent incidents like the one involving the suspended officer.

She urged the public to report any form of misconduct or corruption by its officers to the appropriate authorities.

Nigeria behind in global passport power, ranks 92nd

0

Nigeria has been ranked 92nd on the Henley Passport Index, highlighting the challenges its citizens face regarding international travel freedom.

The index, which ranks countries based on the number of destinations their passport holders can access without a prior visa, shows Nigeria lagging behind many other nations.

The Henley Passport Index, recognised as the authoritative ranking of global passports, is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association and enhanced by Henley & Partners’ research team. This is according to its website.

It includes 199 different passports and 227 different travel destinations, making it the standard reference tool for global citizens and sovereign states assessing passport power.

According to the latest update, Singapore tops the list, boasting the world’s most powerful passport.

France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Japan share the second position, followed by South Korea, Finland, Sweden, Austria, Ireland, Netherlands, and Luxembourg in the third spot.

European countries dominate the top positions, with Denmark, Belgium, New Zealand, the UK, Norway, and Switzerland all tied for fourth place.

Australia and Portugal rank fifth, while Greece and Poland come in sixth. Malta, Canada, Czechia, and Hungary share the seventh position, followed by the United States in eighth.

Other notable rankings include the UAE, Estonia, and Lithuania in ninth place, with Iceland, Latvia, Slovakia, and Slovenia rounding out the top ten. In the Middle East, Saudi Arabia ranks 56th, and Iran is positioned at 94th, just beneath Nigeria.

African countries also feature in the lower half of the index, with South Africa ranking 47th and Egypt at 87th. The lowest ranks are occupied by war-torn and politically unstable countries, with Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan positioned at the bottom of the list.

“With historical data spanning 19 years, the Henley Passport Index is the only one of its kind based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA). The index includes 199 different passports and 227 different travel destinations. Updated monthly, the Henley Passport Index is considered the standard reference tool for global citizens and sovereign states when assessing where a passport ranks on the global mobility spectrum,” the Henley Passport Index site said.

Meanwhile, According editorial board, on Thursday, assessing the ranking provided suggestions to which the Federal Government can make investments to improve the Nigerian passport.

“President Bola Tinubu should evaluate and invest in Nigeria’s perception management. He should combat corruption, improve the various developmental indices, tackle insecurity, and improve living standards to curb the pull-and-push factors of irregular migration,” the assessment said.

Football Legend Okpala eulogises Rangers’ role in post-war Nigeria

0

A former Super Eagles assistant coach, Sylvanus Okpala, on Wednesday, provided insight into Rangers Football Club’s historical importance in Nigeria’s post-civil war.

Speaking to our reporter on Wednesday, Okpala said, “Rangers is not only a traditional team, but a movement of a people from the Southeast after the Civil War.”

This is coming after the Ex-Rangers International Footballers Cooperative announced a service of songs ceremony to commemorate two of their revered former players, Stanley Okoronkwo and Harrison Mecha, who recently passed away.

Okpala, who is also a prominent ex-Rangers and former Green Eagles player, recounted how Rangers’ victory over the Nigerian Army team in Lagos helped integrate Igbos back into Nigerian society post-war.

“After the game, most of those who fought against the Biafrans, those military chaps who fought against Biafra, from that game, they became supporters of Rangers because of the way Rangers played and defeated them,” Okpala explained.

According to him, this acceptance encouraged Igbos to travel and settle in other parts of Nigeria, following Rangers to their matches.

Meanwhile, the service of songs event, scheduled for August 8, 2024, at 1:30 PM in the Gymnasium Hall of Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Ogui Road, Enugu, aims to celebrate the lives and contributions of these ex-players.

Mecha, in addition to playing for the Rangers, was a player of the Nigerian Super Eagles, then known as the Green Eagles. Okoronkwo, meanwhile, was a Rangers player.

The event is being sponsored by the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who has supported the team through his contributions over the years.

Okpala praised Obi’s long-standing support for ex-Rangers, saying, “Obi has been connected with us even after he left office. He’s there until date. Obi suggested that we should have that service of song at Enugu where they play at Enugu Stadium. He (Obi) also footed the bills.”

The Ex-Rangers Chairman, Igweokolo Prince, who announced the programme in a statement sighted by According Online on Wednesday, said, “We the family of Ex-Rangers Int’l Footballers Cooperative wish to invite lovers of ex-Rangers to the service of songs of our two heroes, Stanley Okoronkwo and Harrison Mecha.”

The burial of both Okoronkwo and Mecha is scheduled for August 30 and 31 in Abia State.
