NSCDC nabs 12 for vandalism in FCT

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Federal has arrested 12 individuals suspected of vandalising critical infrastructure amid the ongoing nationwide hunger protest.

The arrests took place across various locations in Abuja, according to a statement signed by the NSCDC Federal Capital Territory Command Spokesperson, Samuel Idoko, on Wednesday.

The suspects were arrested between August 5, and, 7,
2024.

The statement read, “The Nigeria Security And Civil Defence Corps, Federal Capital Territory Command has apprehended 12 suspected vandals in different parts of Abuja during the Nationwide hunger protest.

“The suspects were arrested between Monday, 5th and Wednesday, 7th August 2024,” the statement read in part.

“Three suspects were apprehended while attempting to damage infrastructure at the Moshood Abiola Stadium. They were caught scaling the facility’s fence, while others fled upon noticing the approaching officers.

“In the Jabi area, four individuals were detained for trying to vandalise street lights.

“The arrests were made during the Command’s vigilant routine patrols during the protest.

“Additionally, a scavenger, identified as Baban-bola, was picked up at about 3:30 a.m. on the newly commissioned Wuye bridge in Mabushi.

“He was detained for wandering and suspected vandalism after failing to explain his suspicious presence at such an hour.

“Based on intelligence from undercover operatives, four more suspects were arrested in Kuje while vandalizing an electrical installation.”

The FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, emphasised that anyone caught vandalising government property would face severe legal consequences.

“Vandalism is a threat to our socio-economic well-being; it causes retrogression in the society, and we will do all within our power as an agency to ensure that any act inimical to our collective growth and development is nipped in the bud,” he stated.

The FCT Commandant called on residents to report any suspicious activity related to vandalism, underscoring that safeguarding critical national assets is a shared responsibility.

He also urged the youths in Abuja to engage in dialogue rather than resort to the destruction of public property, which he argued causes more harm than good to the public.

The nationwide protest, which commenced on Thursday, August 1, was in response to the hardship experienced by citizens in the country.

Several major highways were blocked, exacerbating the situation.

The #EndBadGovernance protests, which gained momentum in major cities such as Kano, Gombe, Yobe, Borno, Niger, Kebbi, Abuja, and other northern towns, were marked by escalating violence.

In some instances, security officials’ actions were the catalyst for the violence, while in other cases, it has been driven by overzealous protesters or counter-protesters.

The Edo State government has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of planning to cause unrest in the state.
The Commissioner of Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, stated this at a media briefing on Wednesday in Benin City.
The commissioner alleged that the APC had resorted to inciting the public that the Federal Government gave many truckloads of rice to the state government for the people but the rice was now with some chieftains of PDP.
Nehikhare said the state government knew nothing about rice looted by protesters from a warehouse on August 1.
The Edo State government and APC had also clashed over the looted rice last week.
“Our findings reveal that the APC plans to incite civil unrest and cause chaos under the guise of riots and protests to disrupt the peace and stability of the state.
“APC is trying to divert attention from its candidate’s weaknesses and buying time to avoid debates and meaningful engagement with the people,” he said.
Nehikhare said the government had alerted police and the Department of State Services (DSS) about the plan.
However, the Director of Publicity for the APC Campaign Council in the state, Orobosa Omo-Ojo, denied the allegation.
He said Governor Godwin Obaseki was being haunted by the ghost of the #EndBadGovernance protest he allegedly sponsored in the state.
Omo-Ojo said the alleged sponsored protest led to the discovery of hidden federal government’s palliative in a PDP leader’s house in Benin.
“The fear of losing the entire hidden grains has led to Obaseki’s sudden hatred for organisers of the protest who he now calls hoodlums and thugs,” the APC chieftain added.
He urged the people of Edo to reject the PDP and its candidate in the September 21 poll, alleging that Asue Ighodalo would be worse than Obaseki if elected.

Renowned Juju musician, King Sunny Ade, and reggae icon, Orits Wiliki, led a delegation from the Musical Copyright Society Nigeria on a condolence visit to the family of late Onyeka Onwenu.

The visit took place at the family’s residence in Ikoyi, Lagos on Tuesday.

Music producer, Kenny Ogungbe, shared photos from the visit on Instagram, captioning them: “Musical Copyright Society Of Nigeria MCSN Delegation To Pay A Condolence Visit To Onyeka Onwenu’s Family In Ikoyi Lagos.

“The delegation included King Sunny Ade (President), Orits Wiliki (Chairman), Mayo Ayilaran (Director General), Tee Mac MFR (Non-Executive Director), and Kenny Ogungbe GCOB (Non-Executive Director).”

Onwenu, a renowned singer and actress, died on Tuesday night, July 30, at Reddington Hospital in Lagos after performing at a birthday party.

Over 30,000 Nigerian mothers participated in World breastfeeding week – USAID

The United States Agency for International Development said over 30,000 mothers in Nigeria participated virtually in the World Breastfeeding Week.

The participation set a new record and drew attention to Nigeria’s low exclusive breastfeeding rates.

According to recent studies, only one in three Nigerian children are exclusively breastfed for their first six months of life, a statement from the U.S. embassy in Abuja on Wednesday revealed.

The World Breastfeeding Week was marked from August 1-7, 2024.

“In a coordinated effort, over 30,000 mothers across Nigeria joined the event virtually, setting a new world record for the most mothers breastfeeding simultaneously.

“This event raised awareness about Nigeria’s low exclusive breastfeeding rate. Only one in three children in Nigeria were exclusively breastfed for their first six months of life, according to a recent study,” the statement read in part.

The U.S. government, in collaboration with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health and various development partners, underscored the importance of breastfeeding for both infant and maternal health.

This year’s theme highlighted the shared responsibility to support and promote breastfeeding practices.

The event, which featured mothers and children, top-level government officials, representatives from the donor community, health organisations, and USAID/Nigeria Goodwill Ambassador for Nutrition, Chioma Chukwuka, emphasised community involvement.

Akpotha shared a goodwill message and led a discussion with mothers about the critical benefits of breastfeeding.

USAID, alongside Helen Keller International and Chukwuka, has been dedicated to improving Nigeria’s breastfeeding rates since May 2024.

This partnership aimed to address child malnutrition through targeted interventions, leveraging the influence of Nigeria’s creative sector to enhance nutritional awareness and practices.

“USAID is committed to supporting breastfeeding initiatives in Nigeria, which help improve maternal and child health globally.

“By partnering with advocates like Chioma Chukwuka Akpotha, USAID and implementing partner Helen Keller International are leveraging Nigeria’s creative sector to improve the country’s nutritional landscape.

“Since May 2024, the collaboration between USAID, Helen Keller International, and Chioma Chukwuka Akpotha has advanced Nigeria’s nutrition strategy. Our partnership aims to improve breastfeeding rates and reduce child malnutrition through targeted interventions,” the U.S. noted.

World Breastfeeding Week 2024 reaffirmed a global commitment to breastfeeding as a cornerstone of child health and development.

NANS faults rustication of poly students 

The National Association of Nigerian Students, on Wednesday, condemned the recent rustication of some students at the Federal Polytechnic, Ede in Osun State.

NANS, in a statement by the President of the Senate, Babatunde Akinteye, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, explained that the affected students were unjustly punished for exercising their constitutional rights.

He said the unity and solidarity of the Nigerian students were unbreakable, and the association would continue to stand against any form of injustice.

Akinteye said, “We strongly condemn the recent rustication of students at the Federal Polytechnic, Ede by the institution’s rector.

“These students, whose only offence was to stand up and agitate for their rightful entitlements, have been unjustly punished for exercising their constitutional rights.

 

“It has come to our attention that the Rector, instead of addressing the legitimate concerns raised by the students, has chosen a path of intimidation and further threats. The targeting of Faculty Presidents and course representatives with threats of rustication is not only unacceptable but also a blatant abuse of power aimed at silencing the student body.

“We wish to unequivocally state that such threats will not deter us from pursuing justice for our members. The rights of the students to advocate for their welfare and demand accountability are sacrosanct and must be respected.”.

The NANS Senate President, therefore, demanded immediate reinstatement of all rusticated students.

“Should the Rector fail to meet this demand, we will proceed with the last C of Aluta to ensure that the voices of the students are heard and their rights are upheld. The threats and intimidation tactics currently employed will not save him from facing the consequences of his actions,” he said.

He added that the NANS stood firm in its position, saying “The unity and solidarity of the Nigerian students are unbreakable, and we will continue to stand together against any form of injustice.”

Akinteye further called on all students, alumni, and well-meaning Nigerians to join the association in the struggle to defend the rights of the student body.

Stock market rebounds, investors gain N97bn

The Nigerian stock market rebounded with positive momentum on Wednesday, adding N97 billion to investors’ portfolios.

Specifically, the market capitalisation of listed equities, which opened at N55.033 trillion, advanced by 0.18 per cent or N97 billion to N55.130 trillion.

The All-Share Index also increased by 0.18 per cent or 171 points to settle at 97,098.98, against 96,928.52 recorded on Tuesday.

Consequently, the Year-To-Date return rose to 29.86 per cent.

Market breadth also closed positive, with 27 gainers and 22 losers.

On the gainers’ table, Redstarex led by 10 per cent to close at N4.18, Oando trailed closely by 9.98 per cent to close at N33.60 per share.

RT Briscoe and United Capital gained 9.90 per cent each to close at N1.11 and N16.10 per share respectively, while Industrial and Medical Gases added 9.87 per cent to close at N17.25 per share.

On the other hand, Neimeth led the losers’ table by 7.69 per cent to close at N1.80, Honeywell Flour followed by 6.10 per cent to close at N3.85 per share.

Sovereign Trust Insurance dropped 5.56 per cent to close at 51k, Deap Capital Management and Trust Plc declined by four per cent to close at 48k, and Ecobank Transnational Incorporated shed 3.72 per cent to close at N20.70 per share.

Analysis of the market activities showed trade turnover settled higher relative to the previous session, with the value of transactions up by 89.59 per cent.

A total of 636.50 million shares worth N12.77 billion were exchanged in 9,744 deals, in contrast to 449.21 million shares valued at N6.74 billion traded in 9,381 deals posted in the previous session.

Meanwhile, Access Corporation emerged as the most traded stock in volume, with 112.62 million shares worth N2.11 billion.

Also, Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) led in value with 74.34 million shares valued at N3.34 billion.

Amnesty International says 21 killed in hunger protests

Amnesty International has accused Nigerian security forces of killing at least 21 protesters during a week of rallies against economic hardship, the national head of the rights group told AFP on Wednesday.

Police have clamped down on protests after thousands of people joined protests against government policies and the high cost of living last week.

AFP correspondents have seen security forces shooting rifles above crowds and firing tear gas to break up demonstrations.

Security forces have denied responsibility for deaths during the protests, which have since dwindled.

Raising an earlier toll of 13, Amnesty’s Nigeria director, Isa Sanusi, said the group had verified seven further killings in the northern city of Kano and one in Azare, in northeastern Bauchi state.

In an interview with AFP, he said this represented a “conservative figure” and that Amnesty was investigating more deaths.

Sanusi said the 21 dead were all protesters killed by security forces.

He condemned the use of live ammunition and called for investigations into the conduct of security forces.

“Their duty is to restore order and make sure that protesters are protected,” he said.

Police in Kano did not respond to AFP’s requests for comment, but have said they are investigating accusations that officers are responsible for deaths in the city.

Africa’s most populous country is suffering its worst economic crisis in a generation following reforms brought in last year by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, including the removal of a fuel subsidy.

On Wednesday, Tinubu addressed the nation, again appealing for patience with the reforms, which the government says will improve the economy in the long term.

“Please have faith in our ability to deliver and in our concern for your wellbeing. We will get out of this turbulence,” he said.

Dubbed #EndbadGovernanceinNigeria, the protest movement won support with an online campaign that called for the government to reduce fuel prices and tackle the cost of living crisis, among other demands.

The rallies have petered out in many parts of the country, but hundreds of protesters took to the streets in northern states earlier this week.

PDP withdraws from Kebbi local council election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi has withdrawn from the August 31 local council election in the state.
The PDP Chairman in the state, Alhaji Bello Usman-Suru, disclosed this to journalists at a media briefing on Wednesday in Birnin Kebbi.
He said: “Having made a wider consultation with some segments of the party membership and prominent elders; it becomes pertinent to inform you that the party is no longer participating in the local councils elections slated for August 31 due to the following reasons:
“The Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIECOM) and all the commissioners are card carrying members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State.
“Therefore, organising free, fair, and credible elections will be a mirage.
“We voiced out our discomfort with their appointments in several communications to the Kebbi State Government and relevant agencies involved in elections management in the state.
“PDP, therefore, does not have any confidence in the leadership of the State Independent Electoral Commission to conduct the elections freely.”
Usman-Suru also decried the creation of administrative fees for chairmanship, vice chairmanship, and councillorship as prescribed in the elections guidelines.
This, according to him, not only disenfranchised some candidates but also grossly violates freedom of choice to candidates, political parties and the electorates.
The chairman added: “The released election guidelines specified that the administrative fees can be paid up to August 30, but abruptly shifted backward to August 7.
“This amounts to changing the rules in the middle of the game and a clear attempt to discourage opposition parties from participating in the elections.
“It is against this background that PDP wishes to inform its teeming supporters statewide that our participation in the elections will only signify acceptance of an illegality, fraudulent system, and stage-managed elections as done in the previous exercise conducted in 2022 under the same leadership.”
He expressed optimism that the National Assembly would pass a bill for Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take over the conduct and management of local council elections in the country.

With the aim of making food more affordable for citizens, the Ogun State government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, has embarked on a sensitisation to markets in the state, in order to promote fair and realistic pricing strategies and achieve an equitable market environment.
Commissioner in the ministry, Adijat Adeleye, who, on Wednesday, led the team to markets in Ogun Central and West senatorial districts, including Siun and Kuto, said the present administration is passionate about the welfare and well-being of citizens.
Adeleye noted that the visit is to facilitate a beneficial understanding among stakeholders, prevent exploitation of consumers, and reduce hardship on low-income households.
The commissioner maintained that the government has been providing dividends of democracy through various intervention programmes, such as Oko’Owo Dapo, through which soft loans and grants were given to empower women and boost their businesses.

“Our goal is to ensure that markets operate fairly and equitably, benefiting both traders and consumers, ” she said.
She added: “We believe this visit marks the beginning of a fruitful collaboration between the government and market stakeholders.”
Adeleye appealed to traders to cooperate with the government to achieve a positive outcome, promote economic development, protect consumer interests, and encourage healthy competition.

Responding ,Iyaloja, Egba market, Mrs Kemi Oloyede, commended the federal and state governments for initiating policies and programmes to support agriculture and transportation, pledging continuous efforts to ensure market women adopt fair pricing which will alleviate the suffering of the masses.
Some market women also lent their voices and promised to adjust their pricing.

Real Madrid’s star summer signing, Kylian Mbappe, engaged in his first training session with the Spanish champions on Wednesday.
