Bishop Kukah Raises Alarm Over Western Media’s Role in Religious Violence

0

Matthew Kukah, the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, has expressed concern about what he called “relentless daily killings” in Nigeria.

The cleric reportedly issued a warning that the scope and pattern of violence are unparalleled globally.

In Yola, Adamawa State, Kukah gave a speech at the public presentation of Solomon Kumangar’s book, The Man They Could Not Stop, to Governor Ahmadu Fintiri. Kumangar was a former Director-General of Media and Communication.

Kukah bemoaned the prevalence of murders throughout the nation and claimed that Nigeria has become dangerously divided along religious lines.

Kukah stated that what is taking place in Nigeria could not occur in Sudan, Cameroon, Niger, Ghana, or any other nation on earth.

No other nation in the world has 10 murders on Monday, 50 on Tuesday, 100 on Wednesday, and weekly killings. How can a nation like that advance?

He went on to say that religious identities have progressively taken center stage in the way that violence is seen and reported.

Only in Nigeria do Muslims and Christians perish. The massacres along religious lines are being encouraged by the Western media; 20 Christians and 30 Muslims were slaughtered.

Kukah asked religious and political leaders to put aside sectarian differences and create organizations that advance harmony, peace, and the advancement of the country.

The cleric also praised Attahiru Jega, the former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, for his intervention during the 2023 Adamawa governorship election issue, calling it crucial to bringing the situation under control.

Bukola Saraki, a former Senate President and former governor of Kwara State, also spoke at the occasion and asked Nigerians to put leadership and competency above party loyalty.

Saraki stated that the country can only advance if the appropriate individuals are allowed to lead its activities. Governor Fintiri’s infrastructure demonstrated his capacity for leadership.

Fintiri was publicly urged to join the ruling All Progressives Congress by Abdullahi Sule, the governor of Nasarawa State and head of the event.

“As our new member, I would give you the APC cap and flag today if I come with it,” Sule declared.

Governor Fintiri referred to himself as “a man of destiny” in his remarks, describing the turbulent 2023 governorship election.

“Many shots were made in vain to halt me. The 2023 election, he claimed, was the pinnacle of them and a humiliating one for the state, the country, and democracy around the world.

He warned that such pressures still exist and accused anonymous political leaders of malfeasance and moral lapse.

The group of political puppeteers and pretenders is still active, moving between Yola and Abuja and obtrusively and dangerously circling our democracy. As we did in 2023, we must use our ballots to oppose them.

Gombe, Borno, Yobe, Taraba, and Plateau state legislators, together with Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi) and Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa) and the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, attended the book launch.

In addition to announcing the book, Mustapha Salihu, the APC’s Deputy National Vice Chairman (North-East), asked Adamawa citizens to keep funding Fintiri’s development initiatives.

Shoot on Sight’ Controversy: Shaibu and Onanuga Trade Words on Social Media

0

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s senior special assistant, Phrank Shaibu, and presidential spokeswoman Bayo Onanuga have been involved in an online verbal spat.

The exchange followed Onanuga’s reaction to complaints of vandalism hampering rehabilitation work on the Ilesha–Ibadan Expressway.

The presidential assistant called for vandals to be “shot on sight” and referred to them as “the worst species of citizens” in a Sunday morning post uploaded via his handle.

However, Shaibu in a harsh response, denounced Onanuga’s remark, calling it as “lawlessness”.

Shaibu emphasized that crimes should be dealt with through arrest, inquiry, and the courts, and that no government spokesperson should support extrajudicial measures.

In a follow-up post later that night, Shaibu turned focus to what he saw as a grammatical error in Onanuga’s comment, stressing that the correct word is “shoot on sight,” not “shoot at sight”.

Onanuga reacted the following morning, dismissing the complaint and claiming that both statements were correct, while telling Shaibu to “upgrade your grammar”.

Unfazed, Shaibu responded with a thorough justification, claiming that “shoot on sight” is a set phrase that shouldn’t be changed.

He claimed that versions like “shoot at sight” are grammatical faults rather than appropriate substitutes and accused Onanuga of being illiterate for defending the term.

I’m Running for President in 2027 — Peter Obi Turns Down VP Offer

In advance of the 2027 general elections, Peter Obi, a well-known member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has announced his intention to run for the party’s presidential ticket.

Speaking to supporters at a campaign event for the ADC candidates in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Area Council elections, which were held at the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, he disclosed this goal.

Obi stated in his speech that he would not accept a secondary role in the party’s long-term political strategy and that he is aiming for the top spot.

He highlighted that the AMAC race is directly related to his bigger political objectives and urged on party loyalists and local inhabitants to cast their weight behind the ADC candidate.

Obi stated that his participation in the upcoming elections is as a leading candidate rather than a supporting one and that winning the AMAC poll would be essential to furthering his political goals.

“This coming election, support us in AMAC; it will help me. We need your help to succeed in AMAC. I’m participating in the upcoming election and running for first place. When I return, you’ll see. “You can be sure,” Obi remarked.

Obi’s fans, particularly members of the Obidient Movement, have escalated pressure on the ADC leadership to adopt him as the party’s standard-bearer for 2027, with many demanding that the ticket should go to Obi alone.

Rotimi Amaechi, a former minister of transportation, and Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president, are among the other prominent figures with presidential aspirations that the ADC is hosting.

I Brought Tinubu’s Infinity Cap If You’re Considering APC— Sule Woos Gov Fintiri

0

On Monday, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule publicly courted Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during the release of a book titled “Fintiri, the Man They Could Not Stop.” This created some minor political drama.

Speaking at the function, Governor Sule stated that if Fintiri decides to leave the opposition and join the APC, he has a “Tinubu infinity cap” ready.

Sule claimed that Fintiri’s conduct and ideals are consistent with the APC in what seemed to be a combination of lighthearted persuasion and political outreach.

“The APC is present in your DNA,” Sule stated. We’re on the same page with you. I have packed a Tinubu’s infinity cap in case you’re thinking of joining the APC.”

He further mentioned APC’s recent strategic political actions throughout numerous states.

The Nasarawa Governor further remarked, “Your Excellency, the governor, you have seen us going to Delta, Enugu, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Kano, Plateau, and Taraba States. And who knows, maybe I’ll embark on this adventure.

On a more serious note, Governor Sule reflected on the difficulties of leadership, especially in a second term, asking Fintiri to stay focused on meaningful government.

“As a governor in my second term, I understand the weight of leadership. I understand the loneliness of decision-making, and I understand the fortitude it takes to govern with conviction and pressure.

“Leadership is not about popularity at all costs. It is about clarity of purpose, consistency in service, patience, and fear of God,” he said.

The Federal Government on Monday charged nine people involved to the June 2025 massacre in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, where dozens were killed and hundreds displaced.

It wasp reported that the accused were hauled before Justice Joyce Abdul-Malik of the Federal High Court, Abuja, and are facing a 57-count charge.

The arraignment was headed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).

The charges were read to the accused through an interpreter as the proceedings got underway, and the courtroom was well guarded.

The accused are being charged with several offenses by the Federal Government, including murder, terrorism, and illicit possession of firearms.

Ahead of the court hearing, the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) underlined its commitment to seeking justice for the victims.

“The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to the protection of the lives and properties of all as enshrined in the constitution,” read a statement by Kamarudeen Ogundele, Special Assistant to the AGF.

The arraignment, he continued, came after a “painstaking investigation and collaboration” with pertinent security and judicial sector organizations.

The attack on the Yelwata village in June 2025 by unidentified gunmen killed dozens dead and displaced several others. The carnage provoked widespread criticism and large protests across Benue State and abroad.

Following the murders, President Tinubu urged security forces to “go after the masterminds” during a visit to Makurdi, the state capital.

“I hope your personnel are alert and paying attention to information, police. How come no arrest has been made? During a stakeholders’ meeting at the Benue Government House, Tinubu stated, “I anticipate that those criminals should be arrested.”

The Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District, Rufai Sani Hanga, has urged former New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) local government chairmen in the district to return vehicles originally granted to them following their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The congressman made the demand in a letter dated January 28, and signed by the Secretary of the Senator’s Office, Engr. Ibrahim Nakwalli Kawaji.

A copy of the letter, addressed to the NNPP chairman of Kura Local Government Area, Ubale Isyaku Waskas, ordered him to return “the party vehicle provided to you by the Distinguished Senator Rufai Hanga for NNPP activities in your local government” to the senator’s office at No. 48, Sokoto Road, Nasarawa GRA, Kano.

The vehicle must be returned between January 28 and January 30, 2026, according to the directive.

According to the letter, the vehicle will be retained at the senator’s office pending the settlement of the party’s internal problem, while urging the recipient to continue serving the party faithfully during the period.

According to Daily Trust, the directive applies to all NNPP local government chairmen under the Kano Central Senatorial District.

The impacted local government areas are Dala, Dawakin Kudu, Fagge, Garun Mallam, Gezawa, Gwale, Kano Municipal, Kumbotso, Kura, Madobi, Minjibir, Nasarawa, Tarauni, Ungogo and Warawa.

The letter further specified that the vehicles must be handed over straight to the head of the senator’s office, Shehu Tijjani Usman Tarauni, underlining the necessity for rapid cooperation on the grounds that the vehicles are party property.

Unpaid Salaries Spark NLC, TUC Solidarity Rally for FCDA Staff

0

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced preparations to organize a peaceful solidarity protest on February 3 in support of striking workers of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) under the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC).

In a joint statement released in Abuja and signed by Mr. Benson Upah, the General Secretary of the NLC, and Nuhu Toro, the Secretary General of the TUC, the unions announced this.

According to the statement, the gathering is intended at backing JUAC, which is now organizing an indefinite strike by FCDA workers over the non-payment of their salary.

JUAC personnel launched the industrial action on January 19, closing down important administrative offices in the Federal Capital Territory, including the FCT Administration Secretariat and the Federal Capital Development Authority headquarters.

The unions noted that the walkout followed the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the administration of the FCTA on January 7, demanding the resolution of what they described as long-standing labour and welfare complaints.

They pointed out that workers had no choice but to go on an indefinite strike because authorities had not responded to the ultimatum.

The purpose of the planned event, according to the NLC and TUC, was to reinforce labor’s national solidarity and collective commitment.

The unions stated, “The purpose of the rally is to reaffirm labor’s collective resolve that an injury to one worker remains an injury to everyone within the Nigerian labor movement.”

They stated that the move will also serve as a powerful message to authorities.

“The action will send a clear message that labor will resist all forms of injustice and intimidation against workers,” the statement stated.

The unions reiterated that the ongoing battle by JUAC members was legitimate and would not be compromised.

They proclaimed that the action would not be compromised and would continue until justice was served.

They claim that their support for the striking employees is still “total and unwavering.”

The labour centres asked JUAC members to stay steadfast, courageous and unified in defending their rights, telling them that they were not alone.

They also instructed all affiliate unions and state councils to mobilise their members massively for the February 3 event.

The unions cautioned that workers’ commitment would not be weakened by intimidation or repression.

The NLC and TUC emphasized that the demonstration was intended to show collective struggle against injustice and that it would be peaceful and legal.

While insisting that it would adhere to legal criteria, they revealed that the Federal Capital Development Authority would be the target of the case.

The unions emphasized that workers’ rights were never granted freely, reiterating a long-standing labor stance.

They stated such rights were always secured via prolonged collective struggle.

Workers in the Federal Capital Territory were reassured by the labor centers that they would not be left behind, promising to support them until their demands were fulfilled.

EFCC Seizes $2.045m, Property Papers from Emefiele’s Lawye

0

David Jaiyeoba, a witness of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has told the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) high court in Abuja that $2.045 million in cash and several property documents were traceable to Godwin Emefiele, former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

During her testimony in the current trial, Jaiyeoba, the 12th prosecution witness and an EFCC agent, connected the money and real estate purchases to bank transactions, approvals, and statements gathered during the commission’s investigation.

The witness, led in testimony by Rotimi Oyedepo, EFCC head of public prosecutions, cited many CBN internal memos authorizing payments for the refurbishment, landscaping, power supply, and furnishings of the former Apex Bank governor’s private property in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The witness informed the court that a number of documents, including an internal CBN note authorizing payments to Architeco Nigeria Limited for renovations in Emefiele’s home, were introduced as exhibits.

A contract outlining the landscaping services provided by the same company at the Ikoyi property was also tendered.

He also cited another internal CBN memo that asked for permission to pay Architeco Nigeria Limited N97,998,416.38 for office equipment, pointing out that Emefiele had granted the request.

Furthermore, exhibit A8 was identified by the witness as an internal memo related to a contract for the construction of dedicated electricity lines at the Ikoyi property. He claimed that the paper had the defendant’s approval and was supported by an interim payment certificate.

Jaiyeoba further informed the court that the EFCC contacted Zenith Bank to follow the defendant’s bank account as part of the investigation.

He recognized Exhibits ED1, ED2, and ED3 as Zenith Bank’s responses about Emefiele’s account.

The witness stated that N4 million was paid to Architeco Nigeria Limited on January 13, 2015, through a debit transaction on account number 2020000064.

The investigation resulted in the recovery of $2.045 million, multiple properties, and title documents from Zenith Bank Plc’s Lagos headquarters, the court was further informed.

“My Lord, the money, totaling $2,045,000, along with a number of properties and title documents, were found in the possession of Mr. Collins Omeke, the defendant’s attorney, at the Zenith Bank Plc headquarters in Lagos,” he stated.

He stated that Omeke told investigators he had been purchasing houses and preparing title paperwork on the directions of the defendant.

“He confirmed that the defendant was in the habit of giving him cash sums in foreign currency, specifically United States dollars, for the acquisition of those properties when asked how he funded these acquisitions, My Lord,” the witness said.

The witness went on to tell the court that Omeke said that Eric Ocheme Udoh had delivered the money that had been recovered from him on behalf of the defendant, and that some of the money had been used to remodel portions of Emefiele’s property.

The prosecution requested that the court postpone the trial until March 3, 5, 16, and 17, 2026, at the conclusion of the session.

Matthew Burkaaa, defence counsel, did not oppose the application but argued there was repetition of evidence, adding that an earlier witness, PW7, had already identified approvals pertaining to the transactions.

He cautioned that if the tendency persisted in later sessions, the defense would raise an objection.

In response, the prosecution requested the court to let it present its evidence however it saw proper, arguing that the consistency of its case justified the strategy.

The trial judge, Hamza Muazu, expressed worry in his remarks that the prosecution seemed “too careful” and frequently needed the court’s prompting, although he promised to make accommodations.

In order to continue the trial, he accordingly postponed the case to March 5, 16, and 17, 2026.

ISWAP Strikes Military Base in Borno, Casualties Feared

0

An undisclosed number of Nigerian troops and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force have been slain following a violent assault by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) jihadists on a military facility in Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.

According to military sources who spoke to SaharaReporters, the attack happened on Thursday after terrorists overran the military formation, opening fire and killing a large number of security guards and allied local troops.

A source informed SaharaReporters on Saturday, “There was an attack, many soldiers were killed, but I don’t have the correct figure yet.”

The source said that during the raid, the assailants stole an unknown amount of ammunition and set fire to armored tanks and other military vehicles.

The extremist group has subsequently claimed credit for the operation, publishing a statement accompanied by a video showing fighters firing towards the military station.

The most recent assault comes after a fatal ambush earlier in the week that killed seven military members, including Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed, who had just received a promotion. On Monday, January 26, 2026, their convoy was targeted while he was bringing troops from Maiduguri to Damasak in Mobbar Local Government Area.

According to military officials, the attackers used explosives and a lot of gunfire during the ambush. An unknown number of soldiers are still missing, despite the fact that some dead have been found. Several soldiers are said to have suffered severe injuries.

Since Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau’s death, ISWAP has been increasing its presence in the Lake Chad region, according to security analysts. The gang has reportedly boosted its ranks following the defection of hundreds of militants previously loyal to Shekau.

Militant groups continue to launch high-impact strikes in the Northeast, frequently causing significant casualties that officials are accused of downplaying, despite the Nigerian Army’s repeated claims that the insurgency has been largely contained.

Over 100,000 people have died and millions have been displaced from their homes as a result of the battle, which has lasted for more than ten years, especially in the states of Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe.
