FEATURE: Staff, patients complain as newly renovated Oyo health centre rapidly deteriorates

0

As the officer in charge of the Sabo Primary Health Centre, Matron Akande Akinlabi has witnessed firsthand the transformation of the facility she has diligently served for years. However, the excitement of a recent renovation has turned into a troubling reality.
“The renovation is a good one and I find it commendable, however, I think the government should look into the status now and help intervene so as to ensure our delivery of health services is better,” she said as she fanned herself with a paper.
Peeling wall inside the matrons office
Sabo Health Care Centre was commissioned in 2004 by the then-governor of Oyo State, Adewolu Ladoja. It was meant to serve an estimated 5,000 population in the Sabo community. The state of the health centre has been in disrepair over years until 2021, when N22.5 million was allocated for the renovation and expansion of the health centre. The project was aimed at improving healthcare services for the local community.
Inside the health clinic
The project, which commenced in 2021 and was completed in 2022, included the addition of a pharmacy, a borehole, and a labour room, among other facilities. However, less than a year after its completion, the quality of the work done is under intense scrutiny as staff and community members are increasingly concerned about the quality of the renovation, with numerous issues surfacing less than a year after the project’s completion.
During a recent visit by UDEME to the health centre, noticeable flaws were evident. Peeling paint on the walls and malfunctioning ceiling fans are among the most glaring issues, raising doubts about the quality of materials used and the overall execution of the project.
Mrs Akinlabi, the officer in charge of the health centre, expressed her mixed feelings as she questioned the quality of the work done. “There are improvements. We had one ward for both male and female patients, but now we have separate rooms for each. However, the quality of the renovation brings questions. The peeling walls and broken fans is something of concern for us. We expected better quality work given the amount allocated for the project,” she said.

Salisu Mikhail, who introduced himself as the Ward Development Committee Chairman of the health centre, pointed out the issues with the building’s exterior.
Parts of the newly constructed fence of the health clinic
“The fencing of the health centre and the tiling are part of the renovation. However, the peeling walls make us question the quality of materials used. In less than a year, we are already seeing these problems,” he said, pointing to the peeling walls of the fencing at the back of the clinic.
Mrs. Akinlabi further discussed the issue of the non-functional fans. “We had ceiling fans before the renovation, but standing fans were provided after. They stopped working after a few months. Despite multiple repairs, we eventually had to pack them up and store them because they couldn’t be fixed,” she said.
Jahman Bawa, a regular visitor to the health centre, shared his experience: “The renovation was commendable, and I come here often for treatment. However, the waiting room is uncomfortable without a fan, especially in this hot weather. It would have been better if there was a fan here,” he said.
Corroborating that, Isah Muhammad, a patient who is just convalescing, said he left his bed to sit in the reception due to the heat in the room.
“I am just getting better and I have to leave my bed in the ward to sit here and get some air. I was unconscious when I was brought here but I am getting better now,” said Mr Isah.
The abandoned fans dumped in the store after attempts to repair failed
Speaking to UDEME, Lawal Adetayo, a civil engineer, explained that the peeling walls might be a result of moisture infiltration, commonly known as seepage. “When renovating, you should test structural integrity before starting the work. Moisture, or seepage, might be coming from the ground. A damp-proof membrane (DPM) should have been used during construction to prevent this,” he said.
Adetayo, while elaborating on other potential causes, said looking at the picture of the building, it is safe to conclude that what was done at the health centre is ‘renopainting’ . “The problem could arise from the plastering stage too, where the previous plastering wasn’t properly removed before reapplying. The surface needs to be rough and dry before painting. Additionally, painting during rainy conditions or improper paint mixing could also cause peeling. It seems emulsion paint was used here, and if too much water was added, that could lead to these issues. A proper renovation is needed to correct this, or else it will keep peeling off.”
Efforts to reach Senator Yaro Anthony Siyako, who facilitated the project, proved abortive as calls went unanswered and emails received no response.
Speaking during a visit to her office, UCH Public Relations Officer (PRO) Obafunmilayo Enitan said the University College Hospital, which is the supervising agency for the project, cannot disclose much about the project.
“We don’t have much information about the project at Sabo because we literally handed it off the moment it got awarded to the contractor,” she said.
When reached, Ochem Vivian, a project supervisor with Dominant Engineering Limited, the contractor in charge of the execution of the project, maintained that the environment is responsible for the peeling off of the wall.
“Sabo is not the only place we worked on, and we don’t get calls from other places. The cause of that is foundational and what we did is only remodeling. We did not do any work with the foundation where we could have done the damp-proof membrane to prevent such,” said Ms Vivian.
When asked about the malfunctioning fans, she blamed the staffers of the health center for what she described as their “careless usage”.
“It was the same fans we supplied to other places we worked on and they worked perfectly. The capacitors of the fans as usual and it is due to the way they use it,” she said.
“I have been there before at night and they left it working when there was no light, I had to switch it off when they brought the light. You can’t be using fan like that and expect the fan not to be faulty.
One of the fans in the Matron’s office, not functioning
However, when asked Sabo Primary Health Centre staffers insisted that the fans stopped working a few months after they were brought.
“We attempted fixing them with our own money more than once and gave up when it was not working,” said Mrs Akinlabi.

Meet 2024/25 five new EPL managers ready for titles battle

0

As the Premier League kick-off on August 16 draws near, anticipation is building for the 2024/25 season.

One of the biggest talking points is the arrival of five new managers, some stepping into the Premier League spotlight for the first time and others familiar with the EPL terrain.

They will face the formidable challenge of going head-to-head with serial winners like Pep Guardiola, his ace competitor Mikel Arteta, and a host of other experienced EPL-tested coaches.

With the league set to run until May, this season promises to be a thrilling battle of tactics and tenacity.

Here’s a closer look at what’s new this season from the EPL website:

Arne Slot (Liverpool)

The 45-year-old Dutchman, Arne Slot, has taken the reins at Liverpool, becoming the club’s first new head coach in nearly a decade following Jurgen Klopp’s departure at the end of last season.

Slot arrives from Feyenoord, where he enjoyed a successful three-year tenure, securing an Eredivisie title, winning the Dutch Cup, and reaching the UEFA Europa Conference League final in 2022.

Slot’s Premier League debut will see him lead Liverpool in an away match against newly-promoted Ipswich Town on Saturday, August 17.

Enzo Maresca (Chelsea)

Italian coach Enzo Maresca was appointed as Chelsea’s head coach at the start of June, stepping in to replace Mauricio Pochettino.

Maresca arrives with impressive credentials, having guided Leicester City to an immediate return to the Premier League by winning the Championship title last season, following their relegation in 2022/23.

With nearly 20 years of experience as a midfielder, including a stint at West Bromwich Albion, Maresca also has ties to Manchester City, where he served as Pep Guardiola’s assistant in 2022.

In an intriguing twist, Maresca’s first Premier League match will see him face his former mentor, as Chelsea hosts Manchester City on Sunday, August 18.

Kieran McKenna (Ipswich)

At just 38, Kieran McKenna has led Ipswich Town to back-to-back promotions since taking charge in December 2021, earning the club its first Premier League appearance since 2002.

After an injury ended his playing career at 22, McKenna transitioned into coaching, taking on academy roles at Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

He later joined the first-team coaching staff at Old Trafford, working under José Mourinho and Ralf Rangnick.

McKenna’s Premier League debut will be a challenging one, as Ipswich hosts Liverpool on August 17.

Russell Martin (Southampton)

At 38 years old, Russell Martin guided Southampton to promotion in his debut season at St Mary’s, bringing the club back to the Premier League after just a year away.

A former defender with 125 Premier League appearances for Norwich City, Martin has also managed MK Dons and Swansea City.

His first match as a Premier League manager will be an away fixture against Newcastle United on August 17.

Fabian Hurzeler (Brighton)

Fabian Hurzeler, appointed as Brighton & Hove Albion’s head coach at just 31 years and 110 days old, is set to make history as the youngest head coach to lead a Premier League match when he takes charge against Everton on August 17 at 31 years and 180 days.

Notably, Hurzeler will also be the first Premier League head coach born after the competition’s inception in August 1992.

Last season, he successfully guided German second-tier club St Pauli to promotion to the Bundesliga.

August 16: EPL begins

Anticipation is building as five new managers enter the Premier League, ready to challenge established figures like Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta.

With the season running through May, fans can expect a dynamic and competitive campaign filled with fresh strategies and intense matches.

Community Shield – Aug. 10

According Online reports that this year’s Community Shield is a Manchester derby and is typically played at Wembley Stadium and has been a part of English football since 1908.

It is considered a major domestic trophy, although it is not part of the regular league or cup competitions.

Manchester City, the Premier League champions, will face Manchester United, the FA Cup winners. The match is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 10, 2024.

The Community Shield is an annual football match in England that serves as the traditional curtain-raiser for the new football season.

It is contested between the winners of the Premier League and the FA Cup from the previous season.

If the same team wins both the Premier League and the FA Cup, the match is played between the Premier League champions and the FA Cup runners-up.

Campaign to exit Igbo from Lagos, idiotic, arrant nonsense – Bode George

0

Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Bode George, has described as “arrant nonsense”, recent calls by some groups asking Igbo people to leave Lagos.

“That type of campaign is ‘arrant nonsense’; it is ‘sheer stupidity,” George told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.

The retired army officer, a Lagos indigene, spoke on the sideline of an interactive session with the media on the State of the Nation, held at his office in Ikoyi.

“It is nonsense. I say it is arrant nonsense. Why should we be saying that the Igbo people should leave?

“We have grown with them here. I had known them. We played local football, local football together.

“I think those who are proposing or talking about it are not Lagos indigenes themselves.

“In Lagos, we welcome traders. Bring your wares, we look at it, we buy it, you make your money, we give you land to build. That is the culture of Lagos.

“Those who are proposing this nonsense have no bearing, no family connection to Lagos.

“I am saying it as a Lagosian. It is arrant stupidity. Why would you tell them to leave? They pay their taxes,” he fumed.

George, who went down memory lane, recalled that Dr Nnamdi Azikwe, who is of Igbo extraction, became the political son of his great grand uncle, Sir Herbert Macaulay.

The former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP said that Azikwe, the first President of Nigeria, had joined Macaulay in the nationalism struggles before the late Obafemi Awolowo and his group arrived from the UK.

“Why are you fighting them? Does it make sense? Lagos State was created in 1967. Since that time to now, the Igbo have had their contributions.

“So, to me, such campaign is idiotic. Very idiotic. They should stop,” George cautioned.

He opined that those spreading such hate were not Lagos indigenes but people who came from neighbouring states and were accommodated in the state.

“They should just shut up. If they have a right to come here, why are they blocking others?

“The Igbo have their own contribution to make.

“They are buying houses and building houses. They are contributing to the development of economic activities in Lagos. They are most welcome,” he added.

NAN reports that recent campaigns on social media, especially in the build-up to the #EndBadGovernmentInNigeria nationwide protest, focused on asking Igbo to leave Lagos

The persistent noise attracted the attention of President Bola Tinubu who quickly reacted by asking the crusaders to perish such thought.

Tinubu’s response, which formed part of his Sunday morning national broadcast on the nationwide protest, declared that Nigeria had no place for such ethnic sentiments.

Mohammed called on the Federal Government for urgent repairs to the damaged section to prevent accidents and alleviate other hardships.
He also declared that his administration would explore measures to maintain certain federal roads in the state, especially as the rainy season continues to make them hazardous.
“The urgent intervention by the Federal Government is necessary to prevent accidents on the highway and mitigate other hardships,” he stated.
The governor further mentioned that his administration would immediately dispatch a team of state road engineers to evaluate the damage and prepare a bill of quantities, which would be submitted to the Federal Ministry of Works for immediate action.
He appealed for patience and understanding from the public, assuring them that prompt action would be taken to address the situation.

Nursing mothers lament high cost of nourishing foods

0

A cross-section of lactating women in Bauchi State on Friday said that they can no longer afford a balanced diet to sustain exclusive breastfeeding due to the rising cost of foodstuff.

The mothers spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, as the Bauchi State Government, international partners and stakeholders create awareness on exclusive breastfeeding, to mark the 2024 annual World Breastfeeding Week.

They said that due to the current economic situation, they cannot increase their intake of nutrient-dense foods like meat, chicken, fish, vegetables and others which are very important for a new mother.

Mrs Nuratu Maigari, a 28-year-old mother of a three-month-old baby, said, ”I fear that this age-long tradition of breastfeeding a baby for at least six months exclusively, may not continue due to the present economic hardship.

”I breastfed two other children exclusively and that was a life-sharing experience. I cannot do that with this baby due to the present hardship.

”It is important for a new mother to eat meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, beans and vegetables at least two to three times per day so that she can have enough milk for the baby and energy for herself.”

She said that mothers feel more hungry and thirsty while breastfeeding.

Eating well, she said, does have a big effect on the amount or quality of your milk.

Mrs Jamila Usman, another new mum, said things are so difficult as she and her family cannot afford daily meals.

”I will have to start introducing water for my baby. I cannot do the exclusive breastfeeding as I was advised during my antenatal,” she said.

Another first-time mother, Asabe Umar, told NAN that during the antenatal clinic, she was told to feed her baby exclusively on breast milk for the first six months with continued breastfeeding for 12 months or longer.

”My baby is just two months. It has not been easy on my husband because he is the only one providing for us now.

”I was told that the foods I eat while breastfeeding are important for my health and my baby’s. I was told to eat meat, eggs, beans and vegetables, Where will we get money for me to eat these food for six months?”, she lamented.

However, Mrs Talatu Mahmoud, a new mother, told NAN, ”I knew I was going to have my baby in July. So, I used my empty sacks and buckets to plant vegetables to take advantage of the rainy season.

”I planted ‘Ugu’, bitter leaf, water leaf, moringa and tomatoes so that no matter how little food I get, I will simply add all my vegetables which are very important for a breastfeeding mother.”

The officer in charge of the Federal Low-Cost Primary Health Centre, Mr Abdurrazak Shehu, told NAN that during antenatal, postnatal and immunisation days, women are educated on nutrition to improve their household’s diet using simple gardening techniques.

He said that the facility recorded 31 exclusive breastfed babies in June 2024, while in July 40 babies were recorded.

He said that the figure indicated that despite the economic situation, mothers adhere to campaigns on exclusive breastfeeding.

Tinubu surrounded by liars who won’t tell him the truth —Dele Momodu

0

Veteran journalist and publisher of Ovation International magazine, Dele Momodu, has criticized President Bola Tinubu for allegedly surrounding himself with aides who are afraid to tell him the truth about the real situation in Nigeria.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain who made the assertion during an interview with Arise TV on Thursday night, said Tinubu is “surrounded by liars who fail to admit to him the poor state of governance in the country.”
In a video of the interview he posted on his X handle, the one time presidential aspirant lamented that Nigeria has never been this bad and that the cause of the government’s failure is due to its constant waste of resources.
Commenting on the reason behind the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests across the country, Momodu said:
“To ask a question ‘is there bad governance in Nigeria?’ I don’t think that is in doubt. Every Nigerian agrees on that.”
Continuing further, he said:
“And I say it including the aides of Mr. President who cannot say it in his presence but they grumble behind him. I say it everywhere. He is my friend, he is my big brother and if anybody will deceive him, I will remain the only one who will continue to tell him that you’re surrounded by liars.
“Nigeria has never been this bad. The reason why I would say this government is failing is because number one, they’ve not been able to check the profligacy that goes on in government in Nigeria.
READ ALSO:Dele Momodu tackles Fayose over comments on northerners
“What I would expect President Tinubu to do and for him to be able to assure the nation that he means well for the nation, it’s not about throwing money around.
“I expect him to say today, I am merging some of the ministries. As long as you meet the constitutionally required number of ministries, then cut off the rest.
“Number two, all these excesses. Everyday, they are awarding appointments like popcorn. You can’t run Nigeria the way you ran Lagos state. In Lagos, it’s just a state and because it’s a state and a very wealthy one at that, you can afford that.
“But nationally, the level of poverty in Nigeria does not allow that. Then, all this living large, outlandish lifestyle, you want to buy a presidential jet, you want to build multi-billion naira homes, stop it now.
“We have a good and reasonable example from Kenya. When the demonstrations started in Kenya, our good friend William Ruto thought it was the usual.
“They will come out for two to three days, we will suppress them. Today, he is begging for oxygen. I pray they don’t drive these young Nigerians to that level because the level of desperation is unprecedented in the country.
“It’s not a question of when I’m travelling, I’ll reduce my entourage to 20 people. That’s nothing. Profligacy is key. Everything else emanates from that. When they say we don’t have money, but they have money for politicians.”
