NLC gives Nasarawa ultimatum over N250m arrears, new minimum wage

The organised labour has issued a 3-week ultimatum to the Nasarawa State Government to commence payment of the financial promotion entitlements of civil servants in the state amounting to over N250m and the implementation of the approved new National Minimum Wage to avert an indefinite strike action.

The State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ismaila Okoh, issued the ultimatum during a press briefing in Lafia on Thursday.

The chairman spoke at the end of an emergency meeting he held with officials of the organised labour union on issues about the welfare of workers in the state.

He stated that most of the workers had, over the years lost a large portion of their monthly salaries due to the non-implementation of their promotions and annual increments since the year 2017.

Okoh maintained that workers had resolved to resist any template produced by the state government without input from organised labour to pay the N70,000 minimum wage.

“We are giving the Nasarawa State government until the end of August to start paying the new national minimum wage and other entitlements of workers in the state to avert an indefinite strike.

“Civil servants in the state have made enormous sacrifices for the development of the state, so the state government needs to act fast to improve the welfare of workers.”

Reacting, the State Head of Civil Service, Abigail Waya, said the state government was yet to conclude on the implementation of the new minimum wage.

She, however, assured the workers of the state government’s commitment to improving their welfare.

Our correspondent reports that the atmosphere around the civil service in Nasarawa State has been characterised by uneasiness, uncertainty, and apprehension following repeated pronouncements by the state government that it is ready to commence payment of the new national minimum wage.

NLC Raid: Call security agencies to order – CNPP tells Tinubu

The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties, CNPP, has condemned the unwarranted raid on the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, headquarters by security operatives.
In a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, James Ezema, on Thursday, CNPP described the distasteful act as a ‘Gestapo-style operation’, pointing out that it was a blatant disregard for the principles of democracy and the rule of law.
The organization urged the President to call the security agencies involved in this particular act to order.
“It is appalling that this incident occurred under the watch of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was produced through opposition struggle and has presented himself as a democrat over the years.
“The CNPP demands that President Tinubu immediately call to order the security agencies that are turning Nigeria into a police state, attacking opposition voices, and hounding them into detention in a manner reminiscent of a draconian military junta”, the statement read in part.
The CNPP reiterated that they are not advocating for violent agitation or protests, or distribution of inciting materials but decried the attempt to gag citizens or intimidate them into submission.
According to the agency, this approach will only encourage further anarchy and earn more hatred for the Tinubu administration from the people.
“As the saying goes, “a hungry man is an angry man.” We warn that if the Tinubu administration forgets that Mr President was a product of the trenches, it may be disastrous for the economy if security agencies push citizens underground through the ongoing high-handedness”, the statement continued.
The organization therefore called on President Tinubu to respect the rights of citizens, including the NLC, and to focus on addressing the economic and security challenges facing the nation.

PDP demands credible local council election in Anambra

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday charged the newly constituted Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) to be independent and transparent in its conduct of local government election in the state.
The PDP Chairman in the state, Mr. Chigozie Igwe, made the call in a chat with journalists in Awka.
Igwe was reacting to Tuesday’s inauguration of a six-man ANSIEC board by Governor Charles Soludo.
The board is headed by Magistrate Chinelo Osakwe.
Igwe, who welcomed the inauguration of the commission, urged the body to adhere to the principles of transparency, fairness and impartiality before and during the elections.
He said: “The PDP in Anambra wishes to call on ANSIEC to ensure that all eligible voters are given the opportunity to participate in the electoral process without any form of intimidation or harassment.
“We will not accept any form of manipulation or rigging in the upcoming local government elections; as a party, we are fully prepared and positioned to win the majority of the elections.”

Pastor, three others kidnapped in Rivers regain freedom

A pastor simply identified as Kingsley, who was kidnapped alongside others in Oyigbo in the Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, has regained his freedom.

The three pastors were said to be attached to a guest speaker who was attending a programme.

Gunmen dressed in military camouflage invaded a new generation church, Light Intercessors, located in Oyigbo last Friday, shot sporadically, and whisked the clerics to an unknown destination.

However, it was gathered that the pastor and the other three clerics breathed the air of freedom on Wednesday night.

A member of the church, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the matter, told our reporter that the abductors released them on Wednesday.

He stated, “The pastor and three ministers who came with the bishop were all released at the same time at a location.”

Asked if a ransom was paid before they were allowed to breathe the air of freedom, he said, “I don’t know. don’t have that information.”

When contacted, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed their release, saying an investigation is ongoing to apprehend the gunmen.

“I can confirm the release of the pastor and others who were kidnapped. But an investigation is ongoing to ensure that we apprehend those behind the kidnapping to make them face justice,” she stated.

Army recovers 238,500 litres of stolen crude oil in Bayelsa, two others

The 6 Division, Nigerian Army, has recovered 238,500 litres of stolen crude oil from suspected oil thieves in three states in the South-South.
The division’s spokesman, Lt.-Col. Danjuma Danjuma, told journalists on Thursday in Port Harcourt that the crude oil was seized from trucks and illegal refining sites in Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers States.
He said that five suspects who were arrested in the operation would soon be prosecuted.
Danjuma said: “These seizures are part of ongoing efforts to combat oil theft and illegal bunkering of petroleum products in the Niger Delta.”
He added that 110,000 litres of crude oil stored in an oven and a massive metal reservoir were discovered at an illegal refining site along Dasaba Creek in Bayelsa.
The spokesman said troops of the 16 Brigade intercepted a truck with registration number, UDH 983 XR on Elebele-Emeyal Road in Ogbia, carrying 30,000 litres of stolen crude oil.
“Acting on intelligence, soldiers, traced inter-connected hoses from the Indorama Petrochemical pipeline in Eleme, Rivers, to a tank located in the bush.
“More than 33,000 litres of crude oil, two pumping machines, a long hose and eleven drums used for the crime were recovered from the site.
“At Cawthorne Channel 1, troops, collaborating with other security agencies, deactivated an illegal refining site containing more than 5,500 litres of crude oil.
“The site is located near Well Head 8, behind Glisten Community in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers.
“Troops of 63 Brigade seized 30,000 litres of crude oil from a truck during a routine patrol in Mosogar, Delta.
“The truck was intercepted along a trunkline belonging to Seplat Energy Nigeria Limited.
“These discoveries are the result of our renewed efforts to clamp down on economic saboteurs
“We urge the public to provide security agencies with reliable intelligence to track down oil thieves and economic saboteurs,” he stated.

Kebbi promises support for military to tackle banditry

The Kebbi State Governor, Dr Nasir Idris, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to give adequate cooperation to the security agencies, especially the Nigerian Army, in tackling banditry in the state.

He further expressed satisfaction with the efforts of the troops of Nigerian Army in the fight against banditry and other criminal activities in the state.

The governor made this known while receiving the acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Sokoto, Brig.-Gen. Ibikunle Ademola-Ajose, on a courtesy visit in Government House, Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday.

He said, “On issue of security in Kebbi State, it is a well known fact that the military has made us proud. We have no course whatsoever not to thank the officers and the men.

“When I came in as a governor, people abandoned their towns and villages, and abandoned their farmlands because of the fear of banditry, especially in the Southern part of Kebbi state.

“Everybody knows that Kebbi is an agrarian state, especially its southern part, where we produce so many cash crops. We sat down with the security agencies and put everything on the table, we X-rayed and arrived at a conclusion and this yielded positive results.”

The governor added that his administration would do everything possible to assist the military to succeed, assuring them that “Because of your efforts, many people now go back to their farms.

“I charge you to continue with the efforts to enable people sleep in their houses with their two eyes close and go to their farms without any fear of bandits.

“Brig.-Gen. Sani Ahmed has done well, we have to say it, we cannot count the number of times we don’t allow him to rest until problem of insecurity are solved. Therefore , we have not regretted working with him.”

Idris advised the new acting GOC to build on the legacies of his predecessor, who according to him discharged his constitutional duties diligently.

Earlier, the acting GOC, Ademola-Ajose, described his visit as nostalgic and home coming, “because two decades ago, I was in Kebbi, I served in 1 Battalion as a Captain. Therefore, coming back home is very heartwarming.

“I am here to introduce myself as the new GOC 8 Div. I must sincerely appreciate His Excellency and people of Kebbi for the support given to the military especially for the support in the fight against criminals.”

The new GOC described the support of the state government to the military, especially in the provision of vehicles and other logistic support as a moral booster to the personnel to enable them discharge their constitutional responsibility effectively

Bauchi governor’s security aide threatens to ‘deal with’ journalists

A security operative attached to Bauchi State Governor, Sen Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir have threatened to ‘deal with‘ journalists working around the Governor’s Office and Government House.
The journalists, who are members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the NUJ were at the Palace of the Emir of Katagum, headquarters of Katagum LGA when the governor visited the local government after a violent protest where hoodlums razed the Council Secretariat and destroyed part of the Government House Annex in Azare last Monday.
The threat incident was delivered on Thursday inside the Palace Hall when the journalists were trying to find a place to record the governor’s speech after an operative of the DSS simply identified as ‘Abdul’ ordered them to vacate the hall.
The jjournalists left and were looking for an alternative spot to get their job done within the hall when he went to them again to threaten them saying: “This is just the beginning,” even as the governor, in company of other dignitaries, had seated next to his host, the Emir of Katagum.
“You challenged me? You will see. This thing that you have done, this is the beginning,” he warned the journalists, much to the surprise of witnesses in the Palace.
One of the journalists replied saying this sounds like a threat, but he maintained his utterance that he would deal with them.
“He once molested me at a function, he is quite aggressive,” a Government House Press Crew member who pleaded anonymity said.
Meanwhile, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the governor, Mukhtar Gidado has promised to look into the issue in order to avert future occurrence just as he pacified the journalists.

Kwara: NSCDC records 159 alleged cases of gender-based violence, rape

The Gender Unit of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Kwara State Command, says it has received 159 gender-based violence cases in the state in the last one year.
The State Commandant, Dr Umar Mohammed, disclosed this while addressing journalists in Ilorin, the state capital.
He noted the substantial progress in the efforts of the command to combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and protect vulnerable individuals within the state.
Umar said “The cases include 76 cases of domestic violence, physical assault and intimidation, 58 cases of abandonment of responsibility, 11 cases of sexual abuse and rape,12 cases of threats to life and two cases of missing children.
He noted that several cases are currently in court and assured the public that all offenders will be prosecuted in accordance with the laws of the land.
Dr Umar reiterated the Corps’ unwavering stance of zero tolerance for Gender-Based Violence and expressed the Corps’ ongoing commitment to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to aggressively combat this societal menace.
He urged members of the public to support the Corps by providing actionable intelligence to help prevent crime in the state.
