Kaduna gov promises justice for teenager killed by soldier

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, on Thursday, pledged to ensure justice for 16-year-old Ismail Muhammad who was killed by a soldier during hunger protest in Samaru area of Zaria in the state.

In a tweet on his verified X handle, Sani expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased and announced a high-powered delegation, led by the Overseeing Commissioner for Internal Security, Samuel Aruwan, to condole with them.

The governor assured them that a full and thorough investigation would be conducted, and the culprit would be brought to book.

He also promised to maintain close contact with the family during the difficult time, just as he vowed to leave no stone unturned to ensure justice.

The governor said, “Today, I dispatched a high-powered delegation made up of top government officials and heads of security agencies to condole with the family of the teenager, Ismail Muhammad, who was killed when troops of the Nigerian Army mobilised to disperse a mob in Samaru area of Sabon Gari LG during the last protest.

“The team was led by the Overseeing Commissioner for Internal Security, Samuel Aruwan. While the team was with the family, I spoke on the phone with the father of the deceased, Muhammad Hussaini, and expressed our deepest condolences.

“I told him that we are deeply pained by the unfortunate incident and will leave no stone unturned to ensure that justice is served. A full and thorough investigation will be conducted and the culprit will be brought to book.

“I will stay in close contact with the family of the deceased in these trying times. I pray to Almighty Allah to comfort them. May Almighty Allah forgive Ismail’s shortcomings and grant him Aljannah Firdausi.”

The According reports that the incident occurred when Nigerian Army troops mobilised to disperse a mob during the recent  #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protest.

The development comes as the state government continued to address the fallout from the recent protests which turned violent in some areas on Monday and subsequently led to a 24-hour curfew in Kaduna and Zaria metropolitan cities in the state.

Suspected bandits  have killed a woman identified as Shoni Michael in Plateau State

Residents said her daughter, who was with her, was also shot by the terrorists before they fled into the bush

It was learnt that the victims were cooking food in their house in the Mangu community when the gunmen attacked them, killing the woman on the spot while her daughter sustained injuries

The incident, it was further gathered, happened in Kikyau village in Mangu Local Government Area on Wednesday evening.

A resident of Kikyau village, Charity Jatau confirmed the attack to According Online in Jos, the state capital, on Thursday.

Jatau said, “An aged woman was killed in Kikyau village last night after she was shot by armed men who we know to be terrorists. Her name is Shoni Michael. Her daughter sustained gunshot injuries

“It’s very sad because the victims were at their residence while preparing food for the family at 4:30pm when the terrorists suddenly appeared and opened fire on them.”

The residents who condemned the attack, called on the security agents to beam their searchlights on Kikyau and the neighbouring communities to stop the activities of the terrorists that have become more regular in recent time

The spokesman for the state police command,  Alabo Alfred, was not readily available when contacted on the incident as his phone indicated that it was unreachable

Abia Assembly refuses to screen 3 commissioner nominees with incomplete credentials

There was a mild drama at the plenary of the Abia State House of Assembly yesterday, as three out of six commissioner nominees sent for confirmation by Abia Governor Alex Otti appeared without some required credentials.
This followed an observation presented to the House by the member representing Obingwa-West state constituency, Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jr., who frowned at why commissioner nominees would appear for screening without their complete credentials.
In his words: “Going through their documents here with us, there is no single paper, including First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC), West African Secondary School Certificate (WASSC), tax clearance certificate, birth certificate or age declaration, among others, to back up their claims in their Curriculum Vitae.”
He urged the House to critically look into the anomaly to forestall further recurrences.
Reacting, the Speaker, Emmanuel Emeruwa, said that one of the commissioner nominees was not present at the screening because he was coming from afar and affirmed that others would be confirmed after they presented their credentials to the House at the next plenary.
Out of the six commissioner nominees sent to the Abia State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation by the state governor, only two, Ubochi Goodluck Chinedu and Ogbonnaya Uche, were confirmed after the screening by the House.
The confirmation of the other nominees was suspended pending when they submitted their credentials to the clerk of the House.
The House also passed into law HAB 10—The Abia State Cocoa Development and Other Commodities and Marketing Board Bill, 2024—following its third reading and consideration of the report from its Joint Committee on Agriculture, Trade, Commerce and Industry.
The House later adjourned its plenary to reconvene on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.

20 die in Bayelsa boat explosion

At least 20 persons died when a wooden cargo boat identified as “Godbless Dickson,” burst into flames in Bayelsa waterways on Wednesday.
The boat carried 64 passengers and crew members when the incident occurred along the Ezetu 1 community of Southern Ijaw local government area of Bayelsa State.
The ill-fated boat was packed with farm produce from the rural settlement headed to Swali market in Yenagoa before the incident.
The spokesman for the state police command, Musa Mohammed, confirmed the incident to journalists on Thursday in Yenagoa.
He said rescue efforts by the Marine Police unit were still ongoing.
The Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Bayelsa Chapter, Mr. Ogoniba Ipigansi, also confirmed the incident.
He said the union’s rescue team comprising two speed boats had been dispatched to the scene to assist the passengers on board.

New constables’ training begins August 10

The Police Service Commission on Thursday said successful candidates from the 2022 police constable recruitment exercise are expected to commence their training at various police colleges in the country on August 10.

The commission added that candidates expected to report for training are those who confirmed their status in the police recruitment portal.

In a statement on Thursday, the commission’s Head, Press and Public Relations,  Ikechukwu Ani said the candidates’ names were already with the management of the college.

Ani said, “Successful candidates of the just concluded 2022 Police Recruitment exercise are expected to resume training this Saturday,  August 10th, 2024, in different Police colleges in the country. The resumption will last from the 10th to the 20th of August.

“The candidates expected to report for training are those who confirmed their status in the Police Recruitment Portal. The names of the candidates are already with the Management of the Colleges, and we will only admit persons whose names are on the list.”

Ani said the commission has stopped using the former portal where names were initially released.

He added that this was a result of the decision reached after meeting with the police management.

He said, “The Commission wishes to state that it has rested the previous Portal, where names were initially released after an elaborate meeting with the Police Management and where it was agreed that the Portal used from the beginning of the exercise should be sustained till the end to ensure fairness, justice and inclusivity in the recruitment process.

“Only candidates whose names appeared on the agreed Portal or who received official messages inviting him/her to report at the Colleges will be allowed for the training. “

Ani also said the commission had started sending messages to specialists who are expected to commence their training from September 28, to October 10,.

He said, “Messages are currently being sent to successful candidates including Specialists who are to report for training between the 28th of September and 10th of October, 2024.”

Ani, while conveying the message of the PSC chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu retd, urged the candidates to ensure that they report to the Colleges on the exact dates required of them.

“He said the Commission will continue to monitor their progress throughout their stay in the training colleges to ensure they come out fully prepared to serve the nation and contribute to the fight to rescue the nation from banditry and terrorism.

“Dr. Argungu said the Commission staff would be sent to the Colleges to monitor their conduct and disposition to the training.

He assured that the commission will continue to provide the enabling environment for them to give their best to the Nigerian nation.

“He congratulated them on their success throughout the stages of the recruitment and enjoined them to be committed to the training so that at the end of the training exercise they would have improved themselves and ready to face the challenges that lay ahead of them,” the statement added.

The According reports that after several weeks of dispute over the recruitment of 10000 constables, the PSC and police settled their differences in July.

The police had alleged that some qualified candidates were replaced with unqualified ones and demanded a cancellation of the entire process.

The PSC, however, denied the allegation and flatly rejected the demand for cancellation.

But in a statement on July 30, the force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi said the two bodies had resolved their differences.

Troops arrest notorious gunrunner in North-West

Troops of the Nigerian Army dismantled a gun-running syndicate supplying arms and ammunition to terrorist groups in the North-West.
The army in a post on its official X Handle on Thursday said the troops also arrested a notorious kidnapping syndicate and recovered a substantial cache of arms and ammunition from the suspects.
It said that troops working in coordination with other security agencies on Wednesday seized a notorious gunrunner, Mallam Yau Ibrahim.
The suspect was nabbed at Babinga Kudaru village of Saminaka, Lere local government area of Kaduna State.
According to the army, the arrest followed the arrest of another syndicate member by the troops of Operation Safe Haven in Jos on July 31.
The post read: “Among the items recovered are an AK-47 rifle, AK-47 rifle magazine, 1,641 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition, and 49 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition.
“In Katsina State, the troops laid an ambush and neutralised a terrorist at Anguwa Boka in Faskari Local Government Area.
“The troops recovered one AK 47 rifle, one AK 47 Magazine, three Rounds of 7.62 mm (Special) ammunition, a mobile phone and assorted items.
“In a separate operation, the troops tracked and apprehended one Abubakar Shehu (25) in the Ijebu-Ode area of Ogun.
“Shehu is a member of a kidnap syndicate responsible for the assassination of Alhaji Mairuga Abubakar, Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) in Orelope Local Government Area of Oyo State.
“Following preliminary investigation, the suspect led troops to Okoka forest in Itesiwaju Local Government Area.
“They recovered four AK-47 rifles, a locally fabricated pistol, eight magazines, one cartridge, and 110 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition.
“The troops are continuing their pursuit of other members of the kidnap syndicate.”

LG chair candidates to pay N250,000, says Ogun electoral body

The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission has announced that each chairmanship candidate presented by political parties for the local government elections scheduled for November 16, 2024 will be required to pay administrative charges of N250,000.

The electoral body also stated that male councillorship candidates will be charged N150,000, while female candidates will pay N100,000.

The commission explained that the reduced fee for female councillorship candidates is intended to encourage women’s participation in politics by lowering barriers.

The commission’s chairman, Mr Babatunde Osibodu, disclosed this on Thursday during a stakeholders’ meeting and the unveiling of the guidelines for the 2024 Local Government Elections, held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.

Osibodu, represented by Mr Olatunji Akoni, Commissioner of the Electoral Commission, emphasised that people are central to the electoral process and play a crucial role in elections, so they must be adequately informed and involved for the process to succeed.

The OGSIEC chairman explained that the meeting aimed to build confidence among participants, including political parties, associations, and religious and community leaders. He added that the commission’s goal is to organise an election that will be free, fair, and credible, setting a benchmark in the state’s electoral history.

Osibodu said, “The elections are scheduled for Saturday, November 16, 2024, from 8am to 2pm.

“At OGSIEC, we are committed to gender sensitivity and actively advocate for female participation in the democratic process.

“The commission has therefore set the administrative charges for the political parties presenting candidates at the elections: N250,000 per chairmanship candidate, N150,000 per male councillorship candidate, and N100,000 per female councillorship candidate.”

He explained that this approach aims to lower the barriers for women to participate in local governance and ensure they have fair and equitable opportunities.
He assured that the upcoming election would genuinely reflect the wishes and aspirations of the grassroots population.

In his contribution, the state chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Mr Yinka Williams, urged OGSIEC to take all necessary steps to convince political parties that the election will be free and fair.

“There should be voter registration, which is crucial to this election,” Williams demanded.

Representatives of security agencies, traditional rulers, political parties, and other stakeholders were present at the meeting.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has revealed that only three political parties out of 17 participating in the forthcoming Edo state governorship election uploaded the details of their agents for all levels of polling and collation, while one party has no single agent for any level of voting or collation.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, said in a statement issued on Thursday that the commission had replaced the manual process for accreditation of observers, media, polling and collation agents with dedicated portals to which the required information, including photographs, is uploaded.
He stressed that political parties are subsequently required to upload the details of their agents for polling units and collation centres for all elections.
The National Commissioner explained that for the Edo State governorship election, the portal opened on July 17, 2024, and automatically shut down at midnight on July 30, 2024, as indicated in Item 9 on the timetable and schedule of activities for the election released almost a year ago in September 2023.
He said: “In Edo State, there are 4,519 polling units and 211 collation centres, comprising 192 ward centres, 18 local government centres and the state collation centre in Benin City. A political party fielding candidate in the election is expected to nominate 4,730 agents.
“From the 17 parties participating in the election, the Commission expected a cumulative figure of 80,410 agents. However, only 44,687 were uploaded to the portal, made up of 43,043 polling, 1,452 wards, 179 local government and 13 state collation agents. Put together, the 17 political parties nominated 55.6 per cent of the expected number of agents.
“Three political parties uploaded the details of their agents for all levels of polling and collation, while one party has no single agent for any level of voting or collation.”
Olumekun stressed that a summary of the submissions by political parties has been uploaded on the commission’s website and social media platforms for public information.
