Three killed in Lagos-Ibadan expressway accident

No fewer than three unidentified passengers were confirmed dead late Thursday following a multi-vehicle crash on the Kara section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

According Online gathered that an unidentified truck driver transporting sugar, lost control and collided with another vehicle, triggering a chain of collisions around 7 pm along Isheri-Olofin, outward bound from Lagos State.

Our correspondent learnt that the other vehicles involved in the accident included an SF3000 truck, a Toyota Camry car with the number plate EPE 200 GK, an Isuzu mini truck with the number plate T-1079 LA and a Honda Accord car.

A fuel attendant at a nearby filling station, identified only as Michael, told our correspondent that he saw several other passengers being rushed to the hospital.

“Three vehicles were involved in the accident, including one fully loaded with bags of sugar. I heard that some people lost their lives.

“However, I saw several injured passengers being rushed to the hospital. The truck driver fled the scene before he could be arrested,” Michael stated.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident around 11:30 pm on Thursday and stated that the victims had been taken to a hospital in Lagos for medical attention.

She said, “Three passengers including two women and one man, died at the scene. The injured were transported to the emergency clinic at Old Toll Gate in Ojota for treatment. The Lagos State Fire Service was present to extinguish the fire.

“The bodies have been taken to the mortuary at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for identification and autopsy. Authorities are actively working to locate the truck driver who fled the scene.”

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Fire Service,  Amodu Shakiru, stated, “The incident occurred in Ogun State but our team was on-site to do everything possible to manage the situation. It took place along the Kara Bridge.”

According Metro reported a similar incident on Wednesday involving another crash that resulted in the death of an unidentified driver and injuries to three other passengers on the Ogun State section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Organized labour in Nasarawa State has issued a three-week ultimatum to Governor Abdullahi Sule to begin payment of the N70,000 new minimum wage and settle the backlog of workers’ entitlements totaling N250m.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Nasarawa State, Ismaila Okoh, made the demand at a press briefing in Lafia on Thursday, warning that failure to meet the demands would lead to an indefinite strike.
“We are giving the Nasarawa State government until the end of August to start paying the new national minimum wage and other entitlements of workers in the state in order to avert an indefinite strike,” Okoh said.

“Civil servants in the state have made enormous sacrifices for the development of the state, so it is important for the state government to act fast in improving the welfare of workers”, he added.
The ultimatum comes after an emergency meeting between labour leaders and workers in the state. Labour is demanding prompt action from the government to address the welfare of workers in the state.

Nursing mothers lament high cost of nourishing foods

A cross-section of lactating women in Bauchi State on Friday said that they can no longer afford a balanced diet to sustain exclusive breastfeeding due to the rising cost of foodstuff.

The mothers spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, as the Bauchi State Government, international partners and stakeholders create awareness on exclusive breastfeeding, to mark the 2024 annual World Breastfeeding Week.

They said that due to the current economic situation, they cannot increase their intake of nutrient-dense foods like meat, chicken, fish, vegetables and others which are very important for a new mother.

Mrs Nuratu Maigari, a 28-year-old mother of a three-month-old baby, said, ”I fear that this age-long tradition of breastfeeding a baby for at least six months exclusively, may not continue due to the present economic hardship.

”I breastfed two other children exclusively and that was a life-sharing experience. I cannot do that with this baby due to the present hardship.

”It is important for a new mother to eat meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, beans and vegetables at least two to three times per day so that she can have enough milk for the baby and energy for herself.”

She said that mothers feel more hungry and thirsty while breastfeeding.

Eating well, she said, does have a big effect on the amount or quality of your milk.

Mrs Jamila Usman, another new mum, said things are so difficult as she and her family cannot afford daily meals.

”I will have to start introducing water for my baby. I cannot do the exclusive breastfeeding as I was advised during my antenatal,” she said.

Another first-time mother, Asabe Umar, told NAN that during the antenatal clinic, she was told to feed her baby exclusively on breast milk for the first six months with continued breastfeeding for 12 months or longer.

”My baby is just two months. It has not been easy on my husband because he is the only one providing for us now.

”I was told that the foods I eat while breastfeeding are important for my health and my baby’s. I was told to eat meat, eggs, beans and vegetables, Where will we get money for me to eat these food for six months?”, she lamented.

However, Mrs Talatu Mahmoud, a new mother, told NAN, ”I knew I was going to have my baby in July. So, I used my empty sacks and buckets to plant vegetables to take advantage of the rainy season.

”I planted ‘Ugu’, bitter leaf, water leaf, moringa and tomatoes so that no matter how little food I get, I will simply add all my vegetables which are very important for a breastfeeding mother.”

The officer in charge of the Federal Low-Cost Primary Health Centre, Mr Abdurrazak Shehu, told NAN that during antenatal, postnatal and immunisation days, women are educated on nutrition to improve their household’s diet using simple gardening techniques.

He said that the facility recorded 31 exclusive breastfed babies in June 2024, while in July 40 babies were recorded.

He said that the figure indicated that despite the economic situation, mothers adhere to campaigns on exclusive breastfeeding.

Veteran journalist and publisher of Ovation International magazine, Dele Momodu, has criticized President Bola Tinubu for allegedly surrounding himself with aides who are afraid to tell him the truth about the real situation in Nigeria.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain who made the assertion during an interview with Arise TV on Thursday night, said Tinubu is “surrounded by liars who fail to admit to him the poor state of governance in the country.”
In a video of the interview he posted on his X handle, the one time presidential aspirant lamented that Nigeria has never been this bad and that the cause of the government’s failure is due to its constant waste of resources.
Commenting on the reason behind the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests across the country, Momodu said:
“To ask a question ‘is there bad governance in Nigeria?’ I don’t think that is in doubt. Every Nigerian agrees on that.”
Continuing further, he said:
“And I say it including the aides of Mr. President who cannot say it in his presence but they grumble behind him. I say it everywhere. He is my friend, he is my big brother and if anybody will deceive him, I will remain the only one who will continue to tell him that you’re surrounded by liars.
“Nigeria has never been this bad. The reason why I would say this government is failing is because number one, they’ve not been able to check the profligacy that goes on in government in Nigeria.

“What I would expect President Tinubu to do and for him to be able to assure the nation that he means well for the nation, it’s not about throwing money around.
“I expect him to say today, I am merging some of the ministries. As long as you meet the constitutionally required number of ministries, then cut off the rest.
“Number two, all these excesses. Everyday, they are awarding appointments like popcorn. You can’t run Nigeria the way you ran Lagos state. In Lagos, it’s just a state and because it’s a state and a very wealthy one at that, you can afford that.
“But nationally, the level of poverty in Nigeria does not allow that. Then, all this living large, outlandish lifestyle, you want to buy a presidential jet, you want to build multi-billion naira homes, stop it now.
“We have a good and reasonable example from Kenya. When the demonstrations started in Kenya, our good friend William Ruto thought it was the usual.
“They will come out for two to three days, we will suppress them. Today, he is begging for oxygen. I pray they don’t drive these young Nigerians to that level because the level of desperation is unprecedented in the country.
“It’s not a question of when I’m travelling, I’ll reduce my entourage to 20 people. That’s nothing. Profligacy is key. Everything else emanates from that. When they say we don’t have money, but they have money for politicians.”

Nasarawa community seeks govt intervention over devastating erosion

Residents of Unguwar Nungu, a community in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, have raised alarm over the severe gully erosion that is steadily consuming their lands, urging the state government to act swiftly to prevent the complete destruction of their community.
TVN findings revealed that the escalating erosion has forced many residents to abandon their homes.
Continuous rainfall in the area has exacerbated the situation, leaving houses and infrastructure vulnerable to flooding and collapse.
Yusuf Agalu, a resident of Unguwar Nungu, decried the dire conditions in the community, noting that every rainfall brings significant flooding that damages property and creates health risks.
“As I speak with you now, many people have left their homes to stay with their relatives because we do not sleep at night anytime it is raining.
“The fear that our buildings may collapse is real because the fear of the gully erosion does not leave our minds,” Agalu said.
He added that the community’s existing water channels, rather than providing relief, have worsened the flooding due to blockages caused by the erosion.
Agalu called on the Nasarawa State Government to construct proper drainage systems and involve local residents in planning and maintenance efforts.
Another resident, Abdullahi Lamino, echoed these concerns, urging the government to take immediate action to protect the community’s safety and livelihoods.
“The erosion exacerbates flooding during the rainy season and creates hazardous conditions for the community members. We urgently seek the government’s support and intervention to address this crisis,” Lamino emphasized.
Debbie Ekere, who spoke with TVN ,explained how she was frustrated at some point, telling her father and brother to leave the water to flow through the rooms till day break.
The community head, Abubakar Ismaila, also expressed his worries about the long-term impact of the erosion, pointing out that politicians had previously promised to address the issue, but no significant action had been taken.
“For many years now, residents of Unguwar Nungu have been suffering from the issues of erosion.
“We have made several efforts on the matter. Politicians have also promised to construct drainages for us, but nothing has been done till today,” Ismaila lamented.
In response, Peter Ahemba, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abdullahi Sule on Public Affairs, acknowledged the erosion challenges in Lafia and explained that the delay in addressing the issue was due to the ongoing construction and rehabilitation of roads in the state capital.
“We actually understand the plights of residents in Lafia who are presently experiencing erosion issues.
“We are aware of the situation, but we are unable to attend to it now because of the ongoing construction and rehabilitation of roads,” Ahemba said.
He reassured the residents that the government is committed to their welfare and urged them to remain hopeful, stating that the issue is a priority for the administration.

Bayelsa boat accident: NIWA condoles victims’ families

The National Inland Waterways Authority has expressed condolences to the families affected by the boat accident that occurred on Wednesday, near the Ezetu 1 community in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The incident, caused by an engine explosion, resulted in the loss of several lives among passengers and crew members.

This was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Acting General Manager, Corporate Affairs, NIWA, Suleiman Makama, and made available to newsmen in the early hours of Friday.

“NIWA stands in solidarity with the Government of Bayelsa State and the bereaved families during this difficult time, and we offer our prayers for the repose of the souls of the departed,” Makama stated.

He said that in response to the distressing news, NIWA promptly mobilised its search and rescue team to the scene to investigate the root cause of the accident and provide updates to the public as necessary.

“NIWA reiterates the importance of strict adherence to safety regulations for both boat operators and passengers. It is mandatory for all individuals using the Inland Waterways to wear life jackets at all times to ensure their safety and well-being.

“We urge all stakeholders in the maritime sector to prioritise safety measures and compliance with regulations to prevent future tragedies on the waterways,” he added.

The Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, Sam Amadi, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the judiciary of destroying the 2023 general election in Nigeria.
Amadi, also a former Executive Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, decried the political strategy in Nigeria, which he said is all about bribing INEC, judiciary, and the security.
In a video sighted by TVN on Friday, the ex-NERC boss averred that when an agency created under the law, with enabling act, make rules, those rules become law.
Amadi stressed that such an agency can only unmake it through rule making process, if not it will be bound to obey it.
“Let me say this, and I’m going to be very clear. In a every country, election is one of the strategies. So in US today you see the policy people thinking around, mapping constituencies.
“In Nigeria as well, election is one of the strategies. And the strategy in Nigeria is very simple: bribe INEC, bribe the judiciary, and come and dear the security and you are done.
“The people that destroyed 2023 election is INEC and judiciary. The rules were clear. The electoral act isn’t perfect but it is very clear.
“I’m surprised that any judge who understands administrative law, which I have taught in the university for many years, which I studied under the best in world, would argue that an internal regulation built on law and an act, a regulation directing that you will do an ‘X’ you can choose to do ‘Y’, when there’s legitimate expectation and detrimental reliance. INEC was totally wrong. And the courts – Supreme Court downwards got it wrong.
“When an agency created under the law with enabling act, and the constitution says you can make rules, those rules are law. They can unmake it through rule making process. If they don’t, they are bound to obey it.
“Results should have been transmitted electronically. I am ashamed. I have a PhD in law. I can stand anywhere in the world to dispute with the brightest. I am ashamed that the court affirmed that INEC could just walk away from the law,” he said.

Tinubu sends out aides to engage citizens nation-wide on his govt’s policies

President Bola Tinubu’s aides on Public Engagement have been instructed to initiate citizens’ engagement across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
This comes after the president’s nationwide broadcast, in which he called for an end to the #EndBadGovernance protests and expressed his willingness to engage in dialogue.
According to the Head of Media, Presidential Community Engagement Office, Ms. Seun Ajayi, the six Senior Special Assistants to the President on Community Engagement have been tasked with returning to their communities to engage directly with citizens.
Their mission is to ensure that the President’s policies and programmes are well understood and that public feedback is incorporated into the government’s agenda.
The statement read, “The whole idea is to strengthen the relationship between the government and its citizens… The newly established Presidential Community Engagement Office is leading this initiative.”

The office has introduced the Citizens’ Assembly, a nationwide programme designed to ensure that the voices of the people are heard and considered in national decision-making processes.

The Citizens’ Assembly was launched on July 29 at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North Central), Abiodun Essiet.
Essiet highlighted the disconnect with Local Government Councils in Nigeria and noted that President Tinubu appointed six SSAs on Community Engagement across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones in September 2023 as part of the administration’s agenda to improve governance through strategic citizen engagement.
