Lack of jobs affecting students’ motivation to excel– Don

Vice-President of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria, South-West, Rotimi Olatunji, shares his thoughts with ISMAEEL UTHMAN on the prospects and challenges of journalism practice

What gap is your association trying to fill in communication practice and study?

The association was established over 12 years ago to bridge the existing gap between scholars and professionals in different areas of communication and media in Nigeria. Our association is the first to attempt to actualise a Town and Gown partnership in all areas of communication and media in Nigeria.

The goal is to promote the quality delivery of the constitutionally mandated role of the media to society. Before this bold attempt, media professionals existed in their domain, while academics operated in the ivory towers, with mutual suspicion and counter-accusations regarding the delivery of our assigned roles as scholars and professionals in communication and media.

But today, the ACSPN provides the opportunity for both groups to work side by side to advance the theory and practice of communication and media in Nigeria.

What is your assessment of communication  and media graduates from Nigerian tertiary institutions?

There is an ongoing debate on the quality of graduates from our tertiary institutions in Nigeria today. This is also true for graduates of Communication and Media Studies, or the traditional Mass Communication programmes. There is no straightforward answer to this question. On one hand, the curricula in these disciplines are expanding.

There is much to learn now, with increased opportunities and platforms to acquire knowledge, thanks to the internet and digitisation. The number of tertiary institutions offering Communication and Media Studies is also expanding, with respective regulatory bodies performing oversight functions. These are all geared towards producing quality communication and media scholars and professionals.

Ironically, a good number of graduates may not exhibit the required knowledge and skills for success. This has led society to question the quality of our graduates. Much is still expected from the classroom in terms of upgrading knowledge and skills in our field. The motivation to excel among our graduates may be diminishing given the hostile economic situation, especially the lack of job opportunities in Nigeria.

It is in a bid to address this challenge that the ACSPN was established, to provide the much-needed opportunities to bring the industry into the classroom and the classroom into the newsroom, as well as other components of communication and media industries.

The goal of ACSPN is to partner all stakeholders to produce industry-ready graduates. The newly unbundled Communication and Media Studies programmes in Nigeria by the National Universities Commission were initiated by the ACSPN to address the question of quality manpower delivery in our disciplines. However, our graduates need to demonstrate increased commitment to quality in all areas of the discipline.

What do you do to address the disconnect between the classroom and the newsroom?

The ACSPN has been committed to addressing the challenge of quality manpower development since its inception. We have several outreach programmes, one of which is called the Empowerment Series, where we regularly bring media professionals into the classroom to share their experiences with our students. The Historical Series brings veterans in all areas of communication and media into institutions of learning.

The same applies to the Eminent Personalities series. We also offer Mentorship programmes for undergraduates in Communication and Media Studies. The ACSPN organises programmes that bring scholars and professionals together to carry out action research that addresses societal challenges.

Interestingly, the ACSPN’s 11th annual international conference, scheduled for 4th to 5th September 2024 in Ikeja, Lagos, provides one of the biggest platforms to jointly tackle the challenge of manpower development in communication and media in Nigeria.

How do cultural differences impact professional communication practices in Nigeria?

Communication itself is a cultural component of humanity because communication exists within cultures and promotes them. Nigeria is a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-religious, multi-lingual society that communication and media must engage. At ACSPN, we are committed to cultural sensitivities and sensibilities.

Even the curricula in our disciplines emphasise this commitment, as we teach courses like Multicultural Communication, Sociology of Media, Advertising/Public Relations and Society, and others. The role of the media in promoting harmony in society is enormous.

Scholars and professionals must continue to display a high level of commitment to the laws and ethics of our disciplines, including a commitment to national development by being culturally responsive, sensitive, and sensible.

How can traditional media and new media be measured for ethics and professional conduct?

For traditional media such as newspapers, radio, and television, the commitment to media law and ethics is ingrained in their practices. Gate keeping functions and oversight are solidly integrated into their daily activities. For those whose level of media literacy is high in Nigeria, if a piece of news is not published or exposed through traditional media, then the credibility of such news is in doubt.

Therefore, the traditional media cannot afford to betray public trust and confidence in that regard. However, the challenge lies with the new media ecology, where non-professionals operate without restrictions and appear to have thrown caution to the wind. Citizen Journalism, although a welcome addition to journalism practice in an ever-expanding public sphere, is inundated with issues of non-adherence to journalistic laws and ethics.

Communication scholars and professionals need to do more through a series of public enlightenment programmes to sensitise the public to the dangers of fake news, false news, hate speech, and offensive publications on less credible social media platforms.

Stakeholders, including the government, media professional bodies, unions, and scholars, need to come together to map out strategies for retaining the best aspects of citizen journalism, as well as designing modalities to sanitise its currently unacceptable negative impact on our cherished media profession.

What is your assessment of the standards of practice among journalists in Nigeria?

Digital media technologies, Artificial Intelligence, and other emergent media technologies have revolutionised journalism and media practice today. But they have also contributed to the negative aspects of journalism and media practice.

There seems to be an overreliance on technology in all aspects of media professional practices. We depend on emerging media to source and write news, edit and frame stories, and write advertising copies and Photoshop visuals.

The old creativity, talents, and acumen of media professionals seem to be diminishing. We need to humanise and tame digital media technologies to avoid the booby traps of technological determinism and remain relevant in the scheme of things.

How much impact do you think AI will have on journalism practice in Nigeria?

The impact of AI on journalism practice in Nigeria is a mixed bag of the good, the bad, and the ugly. The opportunities that AI offers for academic and professional excellence in journalism are limitless. The phenomenal growth and development of journalism in the era of AI are breathtaking.

Journalists and other media professionals, including scholars, can only ignore the integration of AI into their respective practices at their peril. However, the need for responsible and ethical usage and reliance on AI cannot be overemphasised.

Happily, the theme of the ACSPN conference is “Digital Communication and Governance in Africa”. The Keynote address will be presented by Mr Dapo Olorunyomi, a foremost journalist whose commitment to professional and ethical AI in journalism remains remarkable.

Professor Svetlana, of the Department of Mass Communication and Media Studies at St Petersburg State University, Russia, will also address a Masterclass on “Reimagining AI in Communication and Governance”. Nearly 500 scholars and professionals from different institutions in Nigeria and globally will hold several syndicate sessions to deliver papers on the responsible and professional use of AI in Journalism, Communication, and Media.

US rapper, Fatman Scoop, collapses on stage, dies

0

US rapper Fatman Scoop has died, his family and manager announced Saturday, after the 53-year-old artist suffered a medical emergency while performing on stage, prompting a wave of tributes from the world of hip-hop.

Scoop, best known for the hit tracks “Be Faithful” and “It Takes Scoop,” collapsed on stage at Hamden Town Center Park, Connecticut and was taken to hospital where doctors were unable to revive him, US media reported.

Medical staff apparently attempted to administer CPR while he was still on the stage, according to a video of the incident obtained by celebrity news site TMZ. He was then carried away on a stretcher.

In a post on his Instagram account, his family wrote that “it is with profound sadness and very heavy hearts that we share news of the passing of the legendary and iconic Fatman Scoop.”

“Fatman Scoop was known to the world as the undisputed voice of the club. His music made us dance and embrace life with positivity,” they wrote.

Scoop’s manager Birch Michael confirmed his death on Facebook, writing: “I love you Scoop. Thank you so much for everything you gave to me.”

– ‘Want to dance’ –

Hip-hop star Missy Elliott wrote on X that Scoop’s “voice and energy have contributed to many songs that made the people feel happy and want to dance for over two decades. Your impact is huge and will be never be forgotten.”

Radio host Shelley Wade posted a photograph of herself with Scoop, writing: “We are losing too many of our hip-hop legends too soon. Rest easy, Scoop.”

Scoop briefly became embroiled in a political row in Australia in 2018 when the country’s then-prime minister Scott Morrison posted a clip that featured his hit “Be Faithful.”

Morrison, a conservative evangelical Christian, deleted the post after his critics said the entertainer’s lyrics were inappropriate and unparliamentary.

“It’s quite clear that that is not a song on my playlist,” he later told reporters in Sydney.

The uproar prompted a response from Scoop, who tagged Morrison in an Instagram post saying: “I am humbled to have my voice rocking in the highest offices of the Australian Government!”

The rapper defended his lyrics: “It’s a fun PARTY SONG that has no NEGATIVITY or HARM in it!!” before extending Morrison a backstage invite to a festival appearance in Australia.

NNPP optimistic of winning Katsina LG poll

0

The New Nigeria People’s Party has expressed confidence in winning the Chairmanship and Councilorship positions in the local government elections slated for Feb. 15, 2025, in Katsina State.

Chairman of the party in the state, Alhaji Armaya’u Abdulkadir, disclosed this in Katsina on Saturday, while unveiling the party’s new logo.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that on Feb. 14, the State’s Independent Electoral Commission had fixed Feb. 15, 2025, as the day for the conduct of local government elections in the state.

According to him, the party is fully ready to participate in chairmanship and councilorship elections in some local government areas.

“We are not contesting in all the 34 local government areas, because the forms are too expensive, and we cannot afford to purchase for candidates in all the LGAs.

“Therefore, I wish to inform you that by the grace of God, we are expecting victory, because nobody can deny the fact that we are facing serious challenges under the current government,” Abdulkadir said.

The present government, according to him, cannot provide a solution to such challenges, “therefore, NNPP is optimistic of victory in the elections.

“The party has conducted its primary elections and produced credible grassroots politicians, who are capable of winning the elections.

“If votes will count, the party is confident of winning all positions it is contesting.”

In an interview, Alhaji Aliyu Shehu-Garo, the National Vice Chairman, NNPP Northwest, said that he was in Katsina, to witness the replacement of two of the party’s officials in the state.

“I am here also here to unveil the new logo of our great party. The logo was changed because we had some challenges during the previous elections across the country.

“Some of our supporters were not able to recognise the logo, so, that has affected us seriously during the past elections and we don’t want that to happen again.

“That’s the reason why the national headquarters of the party met with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and changed the party’s logo,” he revealed.

He, however, explained that the new logo “symbolising education for all, which is the most concerned area of Kwankwasiya leader, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.”

The vice chairman commended loyal members of the party for their commitment to promoting the party’s ideals in the state, saying that Katsina was one of the party’s pride states in the northern part of the country.

Shehu-Garo also urged the party candidates to work towards moving the state and the country forward against personal aggrandisement.

A boat accident occurred on Saturday in the Zindiwa River, located in the Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The accident, according to the African Independent Television, left three people missing and seven others rescued.

Eyewitnesses reported that the boat, carrying 10 passengers, capsized around 4pm as it attempted to cross the river.

The boat was being used as an alternative mode of transportation due to flooding that had cut off the main road, forcing residents to rely on boats to reach their destinations..

A rescue team from a nearby village responded swiftly, managing to save seven passengers.

However, the search continues for the three individuals still unaccounted for.

The cause of the accident remains unclear, though some eyewitnesses suspected that overloading may have played a role in the tragedy.

In September 2022, no fewer than five people were killed when the boat they were in capsized at a river in Jama’are town in Jama’are Local Government Area of Bauchi State as a result of a heavy rainfall and windstorm.

According to Online reported a twin incident in 2020.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has vowed not to allow anyone to take over the Peoples Democratic Party structure in Rivers State.

The former Rivers State Governor vowed to cause a political crisis in their states if any PDP governor tried interfering in the party’s affairs in the South-South state.

According Online reports that the PDP governors, who met in Taraba State on August 23, weighed in on the crisis rocking the party in the state and reiterated their support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The PDP Governors’ Forum, in a communique read by its Chairman and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, called for a review of the party congress outcome to restore Fubara’s leadership role in the state.

He said, “Let me assure all of you, not while we live will anybody take away the structure of the PDP from us. But let me tell people, I hear some governors who say they will take over the structure and give back to somebody.

“I pity those governors because I will put fire in their states. When God has given you peace, you say you don’t want peace – anything you see you take.

“Because I heard they got some money from a signature bonus, and so their heads are getting big that you will put a hand in my own state. Prepare because I have the capacity to also do the same thing in your own state.

“Whether you are from Bauchi, I don’t give a damn, whichever state you are from, as far as I know, that you are trying to put yourself in Rivers State, your hand will get burnt, and you will never sleep in your state.”

The Rivers PDP has been in crisis following the fallout between Wike and his predecessor, who was absent at the congress.

In attendance alongside the minister were some serving and past lawmakers at both federal and state levels, former council chairmen, and other party faithful.

A factional group of the Peoples Democratic Party in Katsina State led by its gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 general election, Yakubu Lado faction has elected new officials in a Saturday congress held at the state party secretariat, Katsina.

Announcing the new officials of the party, the Chairman of the Congress, Ilu Bello announced Nura Kurfi as the new chairman of the PDP in the state.

“Based on the constitution, we have the representative of the Independent National Electoral Commission here to witness the outcome of our election of the 39 positions, comprising of state, zonal and local government officials”, Ilu said.

In his acceptance speech, the new chairman, Amadi said the new officials will justify the confidence repose on them.

“We will amend all broken walls in PDP as we take over the mantle of leadership today, Saturday 31st August 2024. We will take over the state in the 2027 general election, God willing,” Amadi told the gathering.

Fayose’s supporters fault Ekiti PDP caretaker committee

0

The Peoples Democratic Party National Working Committee, on Saturday, received knocks over the composition of the caretaker committee for the Ekiti State chapter of the party.

The NWC, in a statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, on Friday, announced the composition of a 19-member caretaker committee for Ekiti State PDP headed by Dare Adeleke following the expiration of the tenure of the State Working Committee.

However, in a statement in Ado Ekiti on Saturday, Lere Olayinka, media aide to former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, described the composition of the caretaker committee as an “exercise of the NWC of the party’s discretion, which will not foreclose the exercise of the discretion of others.”

Olayinka said Fayose’s supporters would exercise their discretion just as the PDP National Working Committee had done in the caretaker committee composition for the state.

He said, “The NWC has a discretion, and they have exercised it. However, everybody who has discretion cannot foreclose the counter discretion the other parties can also exercise. We don’t have powers over their discretion, and at the appropriate time, they won’t have powers over our own discretion too.

“They have exercised their rights, and as stakeholders in the party, too, we will exercise our own rights in due course. Furthermore, discretion and action operate within the short, medium and long term. At the appropriate time, those of us who are with Fayose in the PDP will freely and openly exercise our discretion.

“Therefore, we welcome their decision because it is within the purview of their powers to do so. Unfortunately, when our own short, medium and long-term discretions are exercised, this present NWC will not be in the office. But it shall not but come with necessary consequences,” he stated.

Ogun PDP caretaker chair hails violent-free ward congress

0

The caretaker chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ogun State, Dada Awoleye, on Saturday, hailed the party ward congress describing it as “Very peaceful and a wonderful show of love and unity portraying the opposition party as one big family.”

Awoleye, while speaking with journalists over the ward congress commended the maturity and orderliness exhibited by the party members across the 236 wards in the state.

He disclosed that the party has through this peaceful and purposeful conduct reiterated its determination to send the government of the APC packing in the state come 2027.

The chairman said, “To God be the glory, they say charity begins at home. The PDP members have shown orderliness, they have shown maturity, they have shown that Ogun State is ready to take up power come 2027 even in the future election.

“The Congress has been peaceful so far with all the wards we have witnessed. Everybody has conducted themselves orderly so we are happy about this. Ward Congress is about the most difficult to conduct, we are talking of about 236 wards! But we thank God that it has gone peacefully.”

Awoleye added, “No single report of violence, no single report of disorderliness of any form, anywhere in the State have reached me so far so it shows that PDP is ready to take up the mantle of leadership in Ogun State and we are happy for this and we give kudos to members of PDP for making this a family affair.”

While monitoring the exercise, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Solomon Maren, said PDP as a people’s party, conducted the exercise as a family affair, saying it was one of the freest and most transparent in the history of congress he has ever witnessed.

Maren said, “You know it is a family business, a family affair and as you can see there is no trouble anywhere, everybody who wants to contest was given the right to contest, they also score the number of votes people want to give them, their supporters also queue behind them.

“It is one of the most freest and peaceful elections I have ever witnessed in the history of PDP congress. I have conducted several congresses in many states before but this is one of the freest I have ever seen.

“I see that winners and losers are jollying together, clapping hands and hugging each other. This is the kind of thing we always look forward to as a party.

“I want to thank the people of Ogun State for being peaceful, for being accommodating and for what they are.

“This is what all Nigerians should copy. Politics is not a do-or-die. It is the people who determine what they want to see tomorrow so we must always continue to avail ourselves and allow people to make their choice once that is done we should clock hands and hug each other.”

He disclosed further that Nigerians cannot continue to endure the unbearable hardship imposed on them by the APC government saying “We must therefore bury our differences, we should come together and join hands with PDP to steer the nation to the right track. If we don’t get it right as a party, Nigeria will continue to get it wrong.”

Speaking on what to expect in other congresses, Maren revealed, “This is like the foundation of the congress, what you see from here, you will know that it will be better in the local government Congress and even will be best at the State Congress because we have already elected the foundation which are the people that are going to vote in these places.”

Our correspondent, during an on-the-spot assessment visit to Ward 12 and 11 in Abeokuta North, reports that PDP faithful in large numbers came out to elect their executives at the level.

Also, the congress held at Ogere Town Hall, Ward 7 in Ikenne LG  was peaceful and Taiwo Soneye emerged as the Chairman of the ward.

The PDP Ward Congress held at Obadore Square, Ward 6, in Ikenne LG had Pastor Segun Ashiru as the Chairman.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission were also on the ground to monitor the exercise.
