Afenifere lauds Ekiti gov’s efforts in economic, agricultural growth

The Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, has praised the various economic and agricultural programmes of Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji.

According to Afenifere, the programmes are helping to address the development needs of the state.

Afenifere Chairman in Ekiti State, Yemi Alade, said the government’s various agricultural interventions were impactful and capable of yielding the desired results in tackling poverty and hunger in the state.

Alade, represented by Afenifere Deputy State Chairman, Bayo Idowu, spoke in Ado Ekiti on Friday after the group’s assessment tour of projects and facilities in the state capital and neighbouring communities.

He praised Oyebanji’s efforts in road construction, housing, security, health interventions, and education, among others, and advised the governor not to rest on his laurels, as more could still be done.

Reps panel laments decayed infrastructure, land encroachment in tertiary institutions

The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has expressed concern over dilapidated infrastructure and land encroachment at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, FUTO, and other universities in the South-East Geo-political Zone.
In his remarks following an oversight visit to Federal Universities in the South-East region, Abubakar Hassan Fulata, Chairman, House Committee on University Education, appealed to older universities to make concerted efforts to renovate and maintain the structures on ground instead of building new ones while the available facilities are left to decay.
Fulata noted that most of the universities his committee visited did not comply with federal character principles and also spend internally generated revenue without the approval of the National Assembly, which he considers as gross violation of the Constitution.
He said the fact that a university is located in a certain location in the state does not mean a certain ethnic group or people from that location should dominate without recourse to federal character principles.
The Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Technology Owerri, Professor Nnenna Nnannaya Oti in her submission lamented over the encroachment of the land belonging to the institution by the host community.
She said non-availability of perimeter fence is one of the factors that resulted to the land encroachment and sought the assistance of the committee to address the challenge.
In the same vein, the Vice Chancellor, Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education Owerri, Prof. Stella Lemchi said the school was recently upgraded from Federal College of Education to university.
She said Infrastructure remains one of the major challenges as the school needs expansion in areas of structures for various faculties and departments.
Similarly, the acting Executive Director, National Institute for Nigerian Languages, Aba, Prof. C.I. Ugwu told the committee that despite vast land allocated for the school, only little portion has been utulised due to lack of fund.
Prof. Ugwu noted that despite previous efforts, there has not been assistance from Tertiary Education Tax Fund (TETFUND). He appealed to to the committee and TETFUND for an intervention.
The Deputy Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Okpolupm Etteh in his contribution said the oversight visit should not in any be viewed as witch-hunting as it is inline with the provision of the constitution.
He said the oversight visit enables the lawmakers who are saddled with the responsibility of appropriation to also check whether what has been appropriated is properly utulised.
Hon. Ilyasu Aliyu, a member of the committee, said while there are several needs to be attended to, the resources available are limited hence the need for effective utilisation of the appropriated fund.

Gombe sets up standing committee on new minimum wage

The Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Yahaya, has stated that the state has a standing committee on the new national minimum wage.

Recall that last July, the governor questioned the viability of his state paying the newly approved N70,000.

Yahaya made this disclosure on Saturday in a press statement signed by the Director-General of Press Affairs, Gombe Government House, Ismaila Misilli, following his courtesy call to Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Yahaya revealed that the standing committee, headed by his deputy Manassah Jatau, is exploring ways to implement the new national minimum wage for workers.

The statement partly read, “Most states have set up committees; in Gombe, we have a standing committee headed by the Deputy Governor. They are working with the labour unions to ensure that we do the right thing.

“It is a law, but implementation normally involves consequential adjustment, and each state has to follow the process properly to get it right.

NNPC denies stories on sale of employment slot

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. (NNPC Ltd.) has dismissed claims that it sells employment slots to the public, describing such allegations as “fraudulent antics.”
In a statement issued on Saturday by Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer, NNPC Ltd. urged job seekers to disregard rumors of employment slots being sold, emphasizing that recruitment is a straightforward process without any inducement or sale of slots.
The company warned that anyone paying for a job does so at their own risk, reiterating its commitment to a transparent and responsible recruitment process.

The statement reads, “The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. (NNPC Ltd.) has called on members of the public, especially jobseekers, to discountenance rumours of employment slots for sale.
“The company states that there is no iota of truth in the insinuations that it has employment slots on offer to anyone who wishes to buy, describing such as antics of fraudsters who want to take advantage of unsuspecting applicants.
“It cautions that as a responsible corporate entity, recruitment into the company is a straightforward process and does not involve the sale of slots or inducement of any kind.
“It warns that anyone who pays money to anyone for any job in the company does so at his or her own risk.”

Olu of Warri’s third coronation anniversary begins Monday 

Activities commemorating the third coronation anniversary of the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, will kick off on Monday at the palace with a praise and worship session.

The Eson of Warri kingdom and Chairman of the anniversary’s Publicity/Media Committee, Chief Solomon Arenyeka, disclosed this to journalists in Warri, Delta State, on Saturday while unveiling the programmes earmarked for the anniversary.

The week-long celebration, according to Arenyeka, will continue on Tuesday with homage-paying ceremonies/anniversary lectures also at the Palace from noon.

The programme showed that Wednesday, August 21 will feature an anniversary/homage paying at the palace.

On Thursday, August 22, there will be homage paying at Ode Itsekiri and the presentation of a drama/play.

Friday, August 23, is billed for a novelty match by Olori Ladies at Ode Itsekiri and homage paying.

On Saturday, August 24, there will be a presentation of awards to distinguished Itsekiri sons and daughters at the palace and a presentation of a music and poetry concert for Atuwatse III.

“Sunday, August 25, which is the grand finale will feature a thanksgiving service at the palace,” Arenyeka stated.

Already, various social media platforms, Facebook, X, TikTok and others are awash with goodwill messages from Itsekiri groups announcing the third anniversary of Ogiame Atuwatse’s coronation.

It will be recalled that the monarch assumed the throne of his forebears at a colourful coronation ceremony at Ode Itsekiri, the ancestral home of the Itsekiri nation in Warri South Local Government Area on August 21, 2021.

Bread seller on UNICAL graduation list for service -NYSC

The management of the National Youth Service Corps has lamented that the University of Calabar once mobilised a bread seller on its graduation list for the one-year mandatory national service.

It said as part of moves to restore sanity, it has demobilised 54 illegally mobilised graduates of the university to prevent the award of Certificates of National Service to unqualified persons.

This was contained in a statement signed by the scheme’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, on Friday.

The statement quoted the Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, as disclosing this in Abuja on Friday, adding that the illegal graduates would be prosecuted accordingly.

He said of the 54, 19 of them initially registered online for mobilisation, have been prevented from service, while four Certificates of National Service for other culprits, were not produced by the Scheme.

Recall that the NYSC had earlier on Monday, invalidated the Certificates of 101 illegally mobilized graduates of UNICAL, who were part of the scheme between 2021-2023.

Following the invalidation of the certificates, the Pro-Chancellor of the University, DIG Udom Ekpoudom (retd.), commended the scheme for exposing fake graduates who were fraudulently mobilised, pledging to take action against staff involved in the mobilisation of fake graduates from the institution.

The NYSC DG disclosed that a bread seller had been illegally mobilised from the university, while commending the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Florence Obi, for hinting the NYSC about the illegal mobilisations.

“The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar came here to report that she observed some names appeared on the institution’s list and they ought not to have been there. She checked the list the school gave us and I told her that their certificates would be invalidated. I give kudos to the Vice-Chancellor.

“Previously, a bread seller was mobilised on the graduation list from the same institution, there are bad eggs in many places that generate matriculation numbers and courses for their candidates”, the DG said.

He stated further that the Scheme would intensify its collaboration with Heads of Corps Producing Institutions and relevant stakeholders in the country to stop the menace.

Ahmed added that any failure in the mobilisation process from any school falls on the integrity of the management of such an institution, stating, “Those who are responsible for imputing the data of graduates should be people of integrity.”

He called on all employers of labour in the country to verify the authenticity of Certificates of National Service being presented for job placement from the NYSC.

Governor Fintiri bans activities of scavengers rummaging through waste in state

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri has signed an Executive Order banning the activities of scavengers in the state.
In a statement by Humwashi Wonosikou, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, he said the prohibition takes immediate effect and will remain in force in all 21 Local Government Areas of Adamawa State until further notice.
“For the purpose of this Order, “scavenging” means the act of rummaging through waste or engaging in any activity that constitutes a nuisance or health hazard,” it said.
The Order warns that any person who engages in scavenging commits a criminal offence and shall be liable to arrest and prosecution.
The statement said security agents operating in the state have been empowered to search and arrest any person who violates this order.
It added that any person who ”circumvents or attempts to interfere with the free exercise of the office of the Governor, hides or offers cash or subverts the course of execution in any way shall be prosecuted in line with the provisions of Section 5(2) and (3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, and the Adamawa State Penal Code Law, 2018”.
”Therefore any person who violates this Order is guilty of an offence and shall be liable to six months imprisonment, a fine of 100,000 or both imprisonment and fine.
”This Executive Order serves as a strong warning to all scavengers and those who engage in such activities.
”The Adamawa State Government will not tolerate any actions that compromise the health, safety, and well-being of its citizens; violators will be dealt with swiftly and decisively”.
It urged all citizens to cooperate with the government in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

NYSC demobilises 54 UNICAL graduates illegally called for national service

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, has demobilised 54 graduates of the University of Calabar who were illegally registered for national service by crooks in the university system.
A statement by the NYSC Director of Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa said another 19 initially registered online for mobilisation have been prevented from service while four Certificates of National Service for other culprits were not produced by the scheme
He said the culprits would be prosecuted in accordance with the law, adding that in its continuous efforts to prevent unqualified graduates from getting the NYSC Certificate National Service, a total of 54 Corps members that were illegally mobilized by the University of Calabar were demobilised by the scheme.
Mr Megwa said, “Another 19 among them that initially registered online for mobilisation have been prevented from service, while four Certificates of National Service for other culprits were not produced by the scheme.
“This is in addition to the earlier one hundred and one, 101, certificates recently voided by the scheme, making a total of 178

Jigawa solicits FG support as flood ravages 12 LGs

The Jigawa State Government has called on the Federal Government to come to the aid of flood victims in the state as no fewer than 3,834 persons have been displaced by the disaster.

The Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Haruna Mairiga, made the call in Dutse, the state capital on Friday while speaking to newsmen on the update on the flood which ravaged 12 local governments.

He said the call was necessary in order to ameliorate the sufferings and hardship being experienced by the numerous communities in the 12 affected local government areas.

“As Iam talking to you now a total of 3, 834 persons have been displaced from their houses and no fewer than 2,744 hectares of farmlands have been washed away by the flood across the 12 affected LGAs.

“We are appealing to the Federal Government, philanthropists as well as donor agencies to assist the victims,” he said.

He pointed out that from August 1 to 13, 2024, the state has witnessed intermittent rainfall leading to several incidences of flood and death of more than 16 persons and the destruction of farmlands and houses.

Mairiga noted that the affected local government areas, include: Buji, Kafin Hausa, Auyo, Hadejia, Birniwa, Malam madori, Garki, Taura, Gwaram, Dutse, Kiyawa and Jahun.

He said the state government under the leadership of Governor Umar Namadi is doing a lot to protect and sustain the livelihood of the citizens, but then, when disaster comes all hands, must be on deck to support the government efforts.

“It is pertinent that we should start soliciting urgent humanitarian support to assist the internally displaced persons with either food or non-food items to be able to support the victims during the trying time and to rehabilitate them back to their houses when the flood draws back,” he said.

Mairiga revealed that the agency has supported the affected communities with palliative items as an Interim measure pending the arrival of the Federal Government’s assistance.

He added that the items donated comprised foodstuffs, rubber mats, blankets, mosquito nets and money among others.

Also speaking, the chairman of Kiyaye Local Government Area, Mansur Musa, said many villages and local government secretariat have been submerged by water.

According to him, most of the people affected by the flood have been resettled in some primary and secondary schools in the area.

FIRS seeks legislative backing to regulate crypto industry

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is seeking the support of the National Assembly to enact a comprehensive law regulating the cryptocurrency industry in Nigeria.
The move comes as the government grapples with the challenges and opportunities presented by this rapidly evolving digital asset.
FIRS Executive Chairman Zacch Adedeji made the announcement, on Saturday, at a stakeholder engagement with the Senate and House Committee on Finance.
He emphasized the need for a legal framework to govern the cryptocurrency market, ensuring its contribution to the country’s economic development while mitigating potential risks.
Adedeji highlighted the FIRS’ plans to introduce a comprehensive bill that would overhaul the entire revenue administration process in Nigeria. This legislation aims to harmonize, recodify, and simplify existing tax laws, including those related to the digital economy.

He said, “The plan first is to have the law that regulates it, and that is why you see that we are here with the legislature, which will be the base of charging. And that is done in any other place in the world when you have this innovation or system, so you just have to get ready for it because you can’t go away from it. So we just have to plan to regulate it in such a way that it is not injurious to the economic development of Nigeria.”
During his opening speech, Adedeji informed the lawmakers about the proposed bill.
He told them, “Just to put you on notice, by September, we are proposing a law that would overhaul the whole process of revenue administration in Nigeria, harmonising, recoding and simplifying the tax laws that we have. For example, in the Stamp Duty Act of 1939, when there was no internet connection, we needed to bring it up.
“Today, we cannot run away from cryptocurrency but as we stand today, there is no law anywhere in Nigeria that regulates cryptocurrency. We cannot run away from it.”
The FIRS recognizes the growing importance of cryptocurrency and the need for a regulatory framework to address its unique characteristics. By establishing clear rules and guidelines, the government can promote responsible innovation and protect investors.
The proposed legislation is expected to be presented to the National Assembly in September. Its passage would mark a significant step towards establishing a regulatory environment for the cryptocurrency industry in Nigeria.
