Obi appoints Tanko Obidient Movement interim coordinator

0

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Tuesday, named Dr Yunusa Tanko as the Interim National Coordinator of his Obidient Movement worldwide.

Before the new appointment, Tanko was the former Anambra State governor’s spokesman and media director of the defunct Labour Party Presidential Campaign Organisation.

In 2015, the activist cum politician was the Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council before moving to National Conscience Party where he became the presidential candidate in 2019.

Obi, who announced the new appointment at an X Space engagement, explained that the choice of Tanko was agreed after consensus to zone the position to the North.

The LP national leader also stressed that his track record and leadership qualities were also considered.

He said, “Last week, I held an X space to announce the start of a series of engagements that will help establish this structure. To drive this process, I set up a team to manage these conversations. This team was tasked with holding a series of consultations and engagements.

“Moving forward, it is crucial to have leadership in place to support this building process. After extensive consultations within the movement and reviewing feedback from Obidients through the ideas submitted, there is a consensus that the position of National Coordinator should go to the North.

“From the nominations submitted by key stakeholders in the movement and shared with the engagement team, Dr Tanko Yunusa emerged as the most nominated candidate for this role.

“I want to clarify that all positions filled at this stage are on an interim basis until our structure is fully developed. Remember, we have over one million leadership positions to fill as we work to build a Nigeria that works for everyone. Please be thoughtful in your nominations to help us onboard people with the competence, character, and capacity to lead.”

Some sources in the area told our correspondent that a yet-to-be-identified police corporal was killed in the incident while others sustained varying degrees of injury.

The reason for the attack has yet to be ascertained, but it is believed to be carried out by a secessionist group.

Ikenga said the hoodlums shot sporadically and threw petrol bombs, causing fires in some offices and the civic centre.

He added that the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam while condemning the act, described the invasion of Security facilities and hostility towards security agents as an attack on the soul of a Nation and vows to bring those behind the unholy act to book.

Traders lament as fire guts 40 Oyo shops

0

Traders at a popular market in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, lamented their losses on Monday when their over 40 shops were completely razed to the ground after a fire incident.

Though, no life was lost, the incident, which happened on Saturday, at the popular Oranyan Market, herbal section, in the Ibadan North East Local Government Area of the state, destroyed multimillion naira property and herbs.

When According to Metro visited the market, on Monday, the shopowners were seen in different groups, gnashing their teeth over the unfortunate incident.

Nobody could identify what led to the inferno.

Some of the victims, Fatimoh Adebimpe (the market youth leader); Kafaya Lucky, and Kehinde Moronfade, lamented that the cause of the fire incident was still sketchy as no single food vendor was in the market when it began.

Adebimpe, who said she had been in the market since 1979, lamented, “We normally resume here around 7.00 am and close by 7.00 pm as well. Whenever they ring a bell or you hear the sound of a bell in the evening, you must take your leave. So, some of us were already at our different homes when those living close to the market started calling us around 10.0pm that the market was on fire.

“What could have caused this? We are not connected to the national grid, because it’s a taboo. We are not using electricity. Nobody is selling food here. So, we are still in total confusion.

“I cannot say this is what I lost in that fire. I just bought some things like full tiger skin; and many other things I may not want in the paper.

“Though the local government officials who control this area were here this morning (Monday), they promised to do something. We are hopeful.”

Another victim, Lucky, said, “I have a lot of money in the shop. The reason why we always keep money there is because of hunters who normally bring different animals for us.

“If you are unable to pay immediately, they may take it to another person. Forget whether he is your customer. So, you must always have money with you. That’s why we are keeping money in the shops.”

Moronfade said, “I just got a loan on Friday, and this disaster happened the next day. It’s so pathetic. No traces of burning or cooking in the market. Honestly, I’m devastated.”

Confirming the incident to our correspondent on Monday, the General Manager of the state fire service, Yemi Akinyinka, said the headquarters received a fire emergency call at exactly 23:25hrs on the incident.

He said, “The incident affected 20 prefabricated shops out of multiple adjourning rows of shops.

“The property worth millions of naira was affected, while property worth billions of naira was saved, but no life was lost. Our personnel returned to the station at exactly 3:36hrs.”

Super TV CEO alleged murder suspect Chidinma’s trial resumes Oct 15

0

A Lagos High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square will on October 15, 2024, resume the trial of Chidinma Ojukwu, charged with the murder of the Super TV Chief Executive Officer, Michael Usifo Ataga.

Ojukwu, a 300-level Mass Communication student of the University of Lagos, is being prosecuted alongside her sister, Chioma Egbuchu and one Adedapo Quadri for the murder of Ataga.

The defendants were arraigned on October 12, 2021, by the Lagos State Government.

Ojukwu and Quadri are facing the first to eight counts bordering on conspiracy, murder, and stabbing while her sister, Egbuchu, is facing the ninth count of stealing an iPhone 7 belonging to the late Ataga.

Ojukwu and Quadri were alleged to have conspired and murdered Ataga on June 15, 2021, by stabbing him several times with a knife in the neck and chest.

The incident occurred at No. 19, Adewale Oshin Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

According to Metro reports that before the ongoing court’s vacation, the prosecution had called 11 witnesses.

The 11th witness, Dr Richard Somiari, a forensic expert, had revealed to the court that the DNA blood sample found on Chidinma’s red dress matched that of the victim, Ataga.

Somiari, a director and consultant for the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, was led in evidence by the Lagos State Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Mrs Adenike Oluwafemi.

He told the court that he had practised forensics for 15 years and had conducted over 500 forensic tests.

Somiari told the court that his office received 21 different items on different days from their DNA centre.

According to him, the items that were received for evidence included a stained red dress, an army green T-shirt, and a DNA sample from Chidinma Ojukwu.

He also told Justice Yetunde Adesanya that other items received were urine, blood, gastric content and byle which were retained for toxicology reports.

The witness said the goal was to create an evidence triangle to link the suspect to the crime scene and the victim.

Somiari said the DNA on the red dress matched that of the victim, Ataga but did not match that of Chidinma and the other suspects, Babalola Disu and Oluwatomi Dada.

The witness during cross-examination by the first defendant’s counsel, Mr Onwuka Egwu, told the court how the result of the toxicology report was forwarded to the office of the Attorney General of Lagos, Commissioner of Police and the Director of Public Prosecutions.

He, however, said not all forensic reports went through such a procedure.

When asked if he questioned the report given by Dr. Andrea Nuhu, in the United States of America, the witness said, “I have already said that I am not a toxicologist. It is a toxicologist that can do such.”

Egwu, however, requested the video of the crime scene to be played and the court granted it.

While the video was playing, he asked the witness whether the samples of blood on the cotton, the wall, the duvet, the white polo the victim was wearing, the chair, and a rug were tested.

The witness answered that the samples were not submitted.

He explained that the markers indicated in his report had nothing to do with the video.

Earlier, Somiari told the court that some samples were in storage but not tested.

The second defendant’s counsel, Mr Babatunde Busari, also cross-examined the witness.

He asked if any DNA sample was taken from the second defendant, Quadri, and the witness said no.

The counsel also asked the witness if he took part in the toxicology analysis which he answered no.

The third defendant’s counsel, Ms C. G. Ugochikwu, said she had no examination for the witness.

Two bankers granted N20m bail for alleged theft of N35m deposit

0

Justice Deinde Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday granted N20m bail to two staff members of Keystone Bank Limited, Ebele Okpala and Perpetua Onyeto, over alleged obtaining of N35m.

Okpala and Onyeto were granted bail after their counsel argued the bail application brought before the court.

The duo were arraigned on Friday, August 30, 2024, by the Police Special Fraud Unit, in Lagos over alleged fraud.

Okpala and Onyeto are facing five counts bordering on conspiracy, stealing, money laundering and obtaining by false pretence preferred against them, by the police.

The prosecution counsel who is a Chief Superintendent of Police, Eliot Ejie, told the court that the two bankers committed the offences sometime in July 2023.

CSP Ejie told the court that the first defendant, Okpala, in connivance with the second defendant,  Onyeto, who worked at the branch of the bank in Anambra State, fraudulently lifted a lien placed on the bank’s customer’s account and transferred the money to her account number 1000234952 domiciled in Keystone Bank.

According to the prosecutor, the offences committed by the defendants, contravened Sections 1(1)(c), Advance Fee Fraud and other related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.

He also told the court that the two bankers’ acts contravened Sections 516 and 383 (1) Criminal Code Act LFN 2004. And Sections 21(a) and 18 (2)(d) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 and punishable under Section 18(3) of the same Act.

However, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.

The case was then adjourned till Monday, for the hearing of their bail applications.

At the resumed hearing of the case on Monday, the defendants’ counsel argued their bail applications which was vehemently opposed by the prosecutor.

But Justice Dipeolu, after listening to the arguments on their bail applications, granted the two bankers bail in the sum of N10m each with two sureties each in like sum.

The judge also ordered that one of the sureties must be a landed property owner within the court’s jurisdiction, while the second surety, must be a Grade level 16 officer in either Lagos or Federal Government establishment.

He adjourned the case till November 6, 2024, for trial.

The spokesman for the Kano State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said this on Monday, while speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Salman Garba Dogo, at the State Police Command Headquarters in Bompai, Kano.

In a press statement, Haruna stressed that the command recorded remarkable successes in its unrelenting efforts to combat crime, noting that it arrested no fewer than 19 suspects including recoveries in the past month.

Furthermore, he stated via the statement that the command arrested a total of 35 suspects in connection with various crimes and offences,  including armed robbery, kidnapping, theft, drug peddling and fraud.

“The recovered items include dangerous weapons, stolen vehicles, solar batteries, mobile phones, and counterfeit currency.”

While providing further details, the PPRO stated: “The arrest of five suspected armed robbers on August 12 is connected to a robbery incident at the Hotoro Quarters, Kano, with a motor vehicle and a locally-made gun recovered.”

“The arrest of three suspected drug dealers on August 26 led to the recovery of 98 pieces of Exol tablets, a bunch  of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp in the Yan-tagwage Quarters, Kano.”

However, the command commended the unwavering support and assistance received from the state governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, adding that the gesture had significantly boosted its morale.

TASUED graduates protest alumni membership fee hike

0

Some former students of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, have expressed displeasure at the increase in the alumni membership fee from N5,000 to N20,000.

The ex-students, who spoke with According to Metro in separate interviews on Monday, described the increase as arbitrary and insensitive to the country’s economic situation.

Some alumni members claimed that the fee provided no benefits and was merely a way to extort them, many of whom were unaware of the association’s activities.

A member of the 2019 set, Mathew Abiodun, criticised the increase, calling it inconsiderate given the hardship members faced due to the economic situation.

He noted that efforts to get an explanation from the alumni president yielded no result, as there had been no communication to justify the increase.

Abiodun said, “The increase in the alumni fee is pure wickedness. When I graduated in 2019, it was N2,500, before it was raised to N5,000, and now to N20,000.

“Given the current economic challenges, most people can barely afford daily meals. Every time you need to collect a document from the school, you are required to pay the alumni fee, which shouldn’t be the case.”

He urged the alumni leadership to reverse the decision and maintain the N5,000 fee.

“We are calling for a return to the N5,000 fee and demand that the president explains the reason for the increase.”

A member of the 2017 set, Oluwagbenga Orolu, alleged that the association, which was supposed to be voluntary, was made compulsory as a means of extortion.

He criticised the association’s leadership, stating that it had no direct impact on the members.

Orolu said, “The increase from N5,000 to N20,000 is a staggering 400 per cent hike. The initial fees didn’t benefit members, and now they’re talking about an increase. If the association was effective, there would be no need to compel people to pay.

“The worst part is that the fee is required multiple times. Each time you need a document from the school, you’re asked to pay the alumni fee, even within a short time.”

Another ex-student, who wished to remain anonymous, noted that when the issue was raised on the association’s WhatsApp platform, the president locked the group instead of justifying the increase.

“While the alumni were expressing concerns about the unjust increase, the president locked the WhatsApp group. Alumni associations should not be a means of making a profit.

“This is leadership through extortion and oppression.”

When contacted, the President of the TASUED Alumni Association, Julius Oladeji, ended the call after our correspondent introduced himself as a journalist. Repeated calls and messages were not answered as of the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, the association’s Public Relations Officer, Ademolu Adenuga, said in a telephone conversation on Monday that an official response would be made public soon.

“I am currently in Osogbo. When I return, I will officially address their concerns,” Adenuga said.
