Abure, loyalists to boycott Otti’s stakeholders’ meeting today

0

There are fresh indications that the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, members of his National Working Committee and his loyalists would shun today’s stakeholders’ meeting summoned by Abia State Governor Alex Otti, The According gathered.

The planned boycott comes a few days after the party’s presidential flag bearer, Peter Obi, threw his weight behind Otti to convene the meeting.

A source close to the camp of Abure, who craved anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to journalists, exclusively told our reporter that none of the NWC members would be in attendance.

“We won’t attend it. Were you not at last week’s briefing, where the national chairman subtly warned the governor and other party members to desist from meddling in the party administration? He meant every word he said that day.

“Now, we have been told not to entertain any question or speak on the issue again. It is wrong of Otti to summon a meeting of party chieftains or stakeholders without the approval of Abure. Have you seen anything like that happening in other parties like APC, PDP or even NNPP?” he queried.

Efforts to verify the report from the LP National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, and members of the NWC met a brick wall.

As of the time of filing this report, the National Secretary of the Labour Party, Umar Farouk, LP National Youth Leader, Kennedy Ahanotu, could also not be reached for reactions.

However, another member of the NWC reached out to our reporter via a terse text, confirming they won’t be honouring the meeting.

The terse text read, “Yes, we won’t be there.”

The According reported how Otti’s initial call for a meeting of the National Executive Committee was rebuffed by Abure, who warned him to stick to governance and stop attempting to pilot the party affairs.

The LP national chairman’s anger stemmed from a recent meeting he had with Otti where the Abia governor stated his intention to convene a NEC meeting on August 31 to dissolve the executives at the ward, local government, state and national levels on the purported ground that their tenures had expired.

But Abure kicked, saying it was not the position of the governor to consider taking such a decision.

Undeterred, the governor ignored the threat and rechristened the NEC as a ‘Stakeholders’ Meeting’, insisting it would take place on September 4 at the Government House in Umuahia, Abia State.

He disclosed this in a circular issued by the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Alex Otti on Public Communication, Dodoh Okafor.

The gathering is expected to have Obi, his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, members of the Julius Aburi-led National Working Committee, Abia deputy governor, as well as serving and former Senators who are members of the party in attendance.

Others include serving and former members of the House of Representatives, members of Houses of Assembly of States, five members of the Abure-led National Working Committee viz: National Chairman, Deputy National Chairman, Secretary, Woman Leader and Youth Leader, Gubernatorial candidates of Edo and Ondo states.

Nigerian politicians weaponise poverty – Eradiri

0

Udengs Eradiri was the candidate of the Labour Party in Bayelsa State in the 2023 governorship election. In this interview with SAMUEL ESE, the former Bayelsa Commissioner for Youth Development shares his thoughts on the challenges confronting the state and proffers solutions

You have been in the politics of Bayelsa State for quite some time and you have had your experiences. Looking at the state, do you think Bayelsa can be better than this?

Bayelsa can be better than this if we have a leadership that is serious about taking the right actions. In agriculture, education, power, economy, we can be better. It’s just a response from leadership. Bayelsa can truly be great if we have people who understand, if we have leaders and they do their job.

Talking about leaders who can do their job, do you see the present administration as meeting the yearnings and aspirations of the people?

They don’t and can’t meet the yearnings of our people. That is the reason I contested, seeing what they did in the first four years – lack of direction, lack of understanding of the issues. What we had were leadership incompetence and misfits in position. They didn’t understand what they were doing and that is the reason why I decided to challenge it. Having been deceived, I thought that the anger expressed by the people during the campaign would translate into good. Unfortunately, it was the money they were looking for. So, on Election Day, those who graduated many years ago, without jobs, left a better alternative and took money. Now, those same people are complaining. Who are they complaining to? They have been paid. The people must go through what they sold for a few thousands of naira.

Don’t you think the issue revolves around the type of politics played in Nigeria?

Nigerian politics is about weaponising poverty. That is what every governor is doing. They take the power; they don’t do what is necessary so that when the crumbs come, people will jump at it. Gradually, the country has snowballed to a point where people are desperate for money, no matter how little. People are looking for what to eat now. They even embellished it with what they call stomach infrastructure. That is the danger. So, you can’t have a leadership that will be elected because there is a manifesto and people have been able to assess the conduct of individuals over the years – because your conduct from five, 10, 15, 20 years ago will tell what you will be tomorrow. So, if I want to contest an election, my conduct should show people if I can do this job or not, because I would have been involved years back – in business, in government, in public space, to be assessed by the people whether I am fit for a certain category of office that I seek for.

In Bayelsa State, there has always been this complaint about food insecurity, and the government has always said that it is rolling out some programmes in agriculture to ensure that the issue of food security is addressed, but up till today, the state is still bedevilled by the issue of food security. What do you think can be done to address the issue of food security? The leaders are not prepared. Where are the budgets of the last four years, and the appropriation for agriculture in the last four years? Igbogene fish farm was talked about in agriculture. I saw the new commissioner going to inspect a dilapidated facility on TV, in social space. So, what happened to the four years? The cassava processing facility that by now should have been processing cassava is not functional. The Bayelsa Palm that is producing oil that can be used to turn our economy around has been mortgaged to some elders in the state who are not using the place to add any value to the state. Rather, they are just selling the palm and putting the money in their pockets. Where are the Bayelsa trawlers and the fish? Bayelsa has a 45,000-bird poultry farm at Ebedebiri. Grass is now growing there.  Because nobody is held accountable, everybody is doing what they like. If you talk, they will bribe the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Where are the taxis to deal with the transportation crisis? They removed subsidies and talked about taxis. Where is the Igbogene facility – the transport logistics base? It was the talk of the campaign. It’s overtaken by weeds. Nobody is held accountable.

How would you rate Governor Douye Diri’s administration?

They just started the second tenure. The first four years were a failure. I can’t rate them now. I’ve just counted all the issues. They say the state is secure but security in an environment attracts development. How come the so-called ‘security’ is repelling development? All the wealthy ones in the state are buying houses in Abuja and Lagos, relocating their families. The indices are saying otherwise. They are taking a road to Brass. I don’t know if it’s still on, but it’s a good one for them to maintain it because it didn’t start now. Even before I was born, they started dreaming of that road. The Ekeremor Road is headed to Agge, but they stopped it at Ekeremor, the same way ex-Governor Seriake Dickson left it. It has not gone to its destination – Agge; so you set up a blue economy ministry but the access to the ocean is not there yet. So what will the ministry be doing? I was behind the Government House at New Yenagoa City; the wonderful roads they’ve done there. I give the government kudos for it. They did well in the area of roads. So, you can say you are going to Otuan, Oporoma. By the time he finishes and another person takes over, the next thing we are at the ocean. Authority not used is authority lost. When Dickson was in office, he touted the idea of the Agge Deep Seaport project, but unfortunately, the project has yet to take off. The road is beautifully done to Ekeremor, but the destination is Agge. While going to Agge, all those communities, Aghoro, Egbema-Angalabiri, become open to the hinterland. The agriculture in that area has expanded because the land there is not too flooded. Serious agricultural activities can begin there because the land does not get flooded because of the terrain. The raffia palm in that axis can now be used for distillery. So, you can’t talk about Agge Deep Seaport without the road that will move materials for the construction of the seaport to make it cheaper. If I were him and resources were limited, I would quickly hit Brass. Then we can start tapping into the ocean economy while focusing on Agge Deep Seaport. So, you can’t jump the gun and start a blue economy in Agge when the first thing to activate the economy is the road.

Some people have looked at the idea of concession for such projects because of lack of funds. Should this be applied?

If you were a businessman, would you bring your money to Agge when there is no road? Some dots must be connected. There was a time they said they were bringing some Chinese firms. The last time I checked, Bayelsa had no five-star rating on booking.com. That alone is a turn-off for investors. There is no three-star. So, these infrastructural dots must be connected. Let me cite an example. The South is very fertile, but if an investor comes for agriculture, they prefer to go to the North. Over the years, the Minister for Agriculture has always been from the North. They have used that for foreign interventions to prepare the northern land. They clear it and prepare irrigation canals to move water over the hot desert and land. There are silos in the North to store grains. The investors know that in the South, they will spend too much on agriculture when they have not started clearing, but if he goes to the North he will go straight to planting and start harvesting. What the governor needs to do is to clear the land so you can sit here and see Agge. You can’t do a Public-Private Partnership without the enabling environment that would support the PPP and the money that will be invested. The governors have been travelling over the years, going abroad to woo investors. I can assure you that no investor will come. It’s a waste of resources, time, and lack of understanding of the environment where you are a leader, to go abroad to call investors. When I was the Commissioner for Environment and I was looking to attend the climate change conference, the first three things I did was to set up an ICT department in the Ministry of Environment and a team that would set up a website and input our environmental pictures and activities. It’s because when you go to such a platform, people can enter the internet and ask the AI to tell them about Bayelsa. You don’t sit down and call people to dinner; meanwhile, when they check your state, it is a forest. Investors put money where they can yield profit in the fastest possible time. For return on investment to be quick, infrastructure must be prepared on the ground. If one wants to come to Yenagoa, he can’t because only United Nigeria Airlines flies once a week (Monday morning). It’s a turn-off because they can’t access your state.

Do you mean that from all indications, Bayelsa is not ready?

Bayelsa is not prepared. As a governor, you need to look at what to do quickly. You should figure out how to get Air Peace and other airlines to be flying into Bayelsa. At a time we had two flights from Lagos – Ibom Air and United Nigeria. Can’t you see that local content has left Bayelsa? The building is just here, but all major activities are outside Bayelsa because people can’t come here. They’ve just set up liaison offices in Lagos and Abuja. So, Lagos customers will go to their office in Lagos when in the real sense they should come to Yenagoa. Now, local content is trying to build a hotel because they know the hotel will serve the oil companies that will come here. The government has not seen that the institution is on the verge of pulling out, especially with an unfriendly Federal Government. They’ll use these excuses to pull the institution out. We should be building estates around that area to support the workers. Over a thousand workers are supposed to be in that place.

Finally, do you see any hope for Bayelsa?

The current governor seems to have lost his track. He says he wants to buy aeroplanes. It’s not a bad idea. But, you see, when Ibom Air was to buy aircraft, they didn’t start with the airline. They had Dana and Arik running that place to establish a route. Then Ibom Air started building a terminal that would accommodate the influx of people. They built hangars where the planes would be parked and repaired; minor repairs could be done, so it was like a plane garage. And then the airline put the necessary roads around the environment so that when they were ready to get the airline, they set up Ibom Air, not the airport management as we have here.

Once the aforementioned is done, you can now move for the licence. Get the licence then they can bring in their planes and start operations.  But where is the Bayelsa Air or Izon Air?  Do they have a licence? Where is the terminal that will handle the cargo?

If you are running your cargo airport, other planes will be coming naturally and will be struggling for the Yenagoa route because of the delivery you have created on Yenagoa. If you build a teen park and a zoo, people will want to spend the weekend in Bayelsa. Planes will be struggling when they see that everyone is coming to Bayelsa.

Police launch manhunt as gunmen kill one in Anambra attack

0

The Anambra State Police Command said it had launched a search for some yet-to-be-identified gunmen, following an attack in the early hours of Tuesday on the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters and Oba Civic Centre, in Idemili South Local Government Area of the state.

Gunmen, in their large numbers, had attacked the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters, throwing explosives that caused a fire at the premises.

During the incident, a yet-to-be-identified police corporal was killed and some other persons sustained varying degrees of injury.

Sources who pleaded anonymity for security reasons in the area told our correspondent that the gunmen also attacked the Oba Civic Centre on their way, thereby causing some destruction at the facility

The reason for the attack has yet to be ascertained and it is not yet clear the actual level of casualties, but the attack was believed to have been carried out by a secessionist group.

The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, adding that security operatives were currently in a joint patrol in the area.

Ikenga said the hoodlums shot sporadically and threw petrol bombs, causing fires in some offices and the civic centre.

Ikenga said, “The police-led Joint Security Force comprising the army, navy, civil defence and other security agencies are currently in a joint onslaught operation within Oba and its environments following an attack in the early hours of today 3/9/2024 on the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters and Oba Civic Centre.

“The suspected armed secessionist group started shooting sporadically in an attempt to gain entrance to the police station and threw petrol bombs at the security facility which made some of the offices catch up with fire including the Oba Civic Center.

“Unfortunately, a police corporal who was fatally wounded paid the supreme price, while the fire was put off with the help of other police officers on duty and the Joint Security responding team.”

He added that the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, while condemning the act, described the invasion of security facilities and hostility towards state agents as an attack on the soul of the nation and vowed to bring those behind the unholy act to book.

0

A 39-year-old man, Ganiyu Abiola, was, on Tuesday, arraigned by the Oyo State Police Command over alleged defamation of a police officer through Facebook and WhatsApp.

The defendant whose address was not stated, was arraigned on two counts bordering on defamation and breach of peace before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Sikiru Opaleye, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on May 12, 2024, at about 6.00 p.m. in the Egbeda area of Ibadan.

Opaleye said that the defendant, through his Facebook and WhatsApp accounts, alleged that one Inspector Folasade Adeoye aided someone to commit fraud.

He said that the defendant knew that the information was false.

Opaleye also told the court that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by spreading false information about Adeoye.

According to the prosecutor, the alleged offences contravened Section 249 (d) and 375 of the Criminal Law of Oyo State, 2000.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Consequently, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Olabisi Ogunkanmi, granted the defendant bail of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Ogunkanmi directed that one of the sureties must belong to a human rights association.

She ordered that the other surety must provide evidence of three years’ tax payment, to the Oyo State Government.

Ogunkanmi adjourned the case to November 19, 2024, for mention.

Addressing journalists at the command’s headquarters in Yenagoa, the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Ewhoborwo Emonena Gunn, said the suspects were arrested in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Gunn gave the names of the suspects as I’ve Godwill (m) 23 years, Princewill Oguama (m) 20 years, Anyanwu Oluebube (m) 19 years, Tochukwu Ajaegbu (m) 27 years, Daniel Samuel (m) 21 years and Akanimoh Joshua (m) 22 years.

The others are Chukwunye Ubeh (m) 19 years, Peter James (m) 28 years, Gentle Nelson (m) 22 years and a female, Ruth Kossiwa, 22 years.

They were arrested on Monday at No. 4, Peterson Avenue, Ogbogoro, Port Harcourt and would be arraigned in court and prosecuted when investigations were concluded, Gunn stated.

His words: “Their arrest followed the conduct of a covert operation by the operatives upon the receipt of intelligent information, wherein hard drugs and charms were recovered.

“The suspects upon interrogation confessed to have been involved in a series of fraudulent activities as evidence speaks volumes. The suspects will be arraigned and prosecuted once investigations are concluded.”

Gunn said the AIG in charge of Zone 16, Paul Alifa Omata, had reiterated the dedication of his officers to protect the lives and property of residents in Bayelsa and Rivers states.

According to him, the police are executing their constitutional mandate and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has also reasserted his dedication to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.

While speaking to newsmen, the only female suspect, Ruth Kossiwa, said she was there to visit her boyfriend of one month when she was arrested alongside others on Monday morning.

Benue transformer vandal electrocuted

0

A middle-aged man, whose identity is yet to be established, was electrocuted early on Tuesday while attempting to vandalise a transformer and cables belonging to the Jos Electricity Distribution Company.

The incident occurred opposite the Queens Hotel, located at Ankpa Ward in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

Residents awoke to find the vandal’s lifeless body hanging between two poles connecting the cables to the transformer.

One of the residents, who identified himself as Terkula, told our correspondent that the victim took advantage of power outages in the area to commit the act.

He added that the man likely met his end when power was unexpectedly restored.

He said, “We woke up this morning at about 5 am and discovered that electricity had been restored in some areas and streets close to ours. So, a few of our neighbours went to check the transformer. When we arrived at the site, we found that all the cables and other installations had been removed, and we saw a lifeless body on the pole.

“We promptly informed the ‘D’ Division Police Station, and they came to remove the body.”

When contacted, the Head of Corporate Communications at JED, Dr Adakole Elijah, confirmed the incident and condemned the activities of vandals in Benue State despite tight security around JED installations.

He said, “It has become impossible for the company to protect these assets single-handedly. That is why we are pleading with communities to take ownership of electricity facilities in their areas, as it is them that the facility serves.

“Each time our facilities are vandalised, we spend significant amounts of money to restore services, only for them to be vandalised again. While the assets belong to the company, the communities are the end users.

“Vandalism of these facilities puts communities at risk in terms of security, social, and economic benefits. We continue to plead with people, especially community policing and vigilantes, to assist in safeguarding these assets.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, also confirmed the incident, saying, “I am aware that someone was electrocuted in Wadata while attempting to vandalise a transformer. I received a report about that.”

Son, parents charged with murder of Kwara graduate

0

Four people including a final-year student of Summit University, Offa, Adebayo Happiness, were on Tuesday arraigned at a Kwara State Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Ilorin over the alleged murder of Awesu Mojisola, a 21-year-old graduate of the state College of Health Technology.

Mojisola was allegedly murdered inside the room of Whitefield Hotel, Ilorin, Kwara State capital by Happiness on August 10, 2024, after deceiving her to attend a botched post-graduation party in Ilorin.

Charged along with Happiness were his parents, Adebayo Adeniyi (51) and Bukola Adeniyi (49) as well as an accomplice, 24-year-old Timileyin Kolawole.

They were charged before the court for alleged criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, theft, false personation, and causing disappearance of evidence contrary to Sections 97, 221, 287, 179 and 167 of the Penal Code Law and computer-related frauds contrary to Sections

14(2) (3), 22 (2) (3) of Cybercrime Prevention and Prohibition Law 2015.

The prosecution led by ASP Isaac Yakub told the court that on August 14, 2024, one Blessing Ogungbenro reported at the Offa Police Station that her roommate, Awesu Mojisola, a graduating student of the Kwara State College of Health Technology, Offa had been missing since Friday, August 9, 2024 she told her that she received a phone call from one Kolawola Timileyin’ joining her to one Adebayo Joshua Happiness, ‘m, a final year student of Summit University, Offa, Kwara State who was requesting  Mojisola to follow him to his sign-out party holding at the Whitefield hotel, Ilorin for a fee of N15,000.

“Awesu Mojisola later accepted the offer and left Offa to meet up with Adebayo Joshua Happiness at Ilorin lately and while Awesu Mojisola was with Adebayo Joshua Happiness, she complained of being uncomfortable with Adebayo Joshua Happiness in the hotel room that

she was lodged because Adebayo Joshua Happiness was smoking hemp.

“Thereafter, Awesu Mojisola’s phone suddenly became unreachable and her whereabouts became unknown adding that immediate police action led to the arrest of Adebayo Joshua Hoppiness who was fingered in the sudden disappearance of Awesu Mojisola.”

He said further, “During an investigation, it was revealed that Adebayo Joshua Happiness had deliberately lured Awesu Mojisola from Offa to Ilorin on the pretence of inviting her for a joint sign-out party of Summit and Al-Hikma Universities purported to be holding at Whitefield Hotel but it was fake.

“In the early hours of 10/08/2024, Adebayo Joshua Happiness killed and abandoned the lifeless body of Awesu Mojisola in the hotel room, locked the room and ran away with Mojisola Awesu’s iPhone 11 pro and her sum of N15,600 to Offa.

During the discreet investigation, Happiness was said to have confessed that he invited Mojisola to Ilorin from Offa deceiving her that there was a sign-out party at the Whitefield Hotel Ilorin, killed her, abandoned the lifeless body in the hotel room, locked it and fled with her money and her iPhone to Offa.

The prosecution further told the court that the mother of the prime suspect, Adeniyi Bukola, later assisted Happiness in removing the SIM card in the victim’s phone and hid it in a fence block far away from their residence at the Ogunse area in Offa while Happiness’ father assisted in keeping the iPhone in a family car parked within their compound.

The court did not however take the plea of the suspects..

The defence counsel, Mr A. Iwalaye, however pleaded with the court to grant all the suspects bail adding that they would not jump bail and be regular in their appearance at the proceedings and that “they are ready to provide reliable sureties to stand for them in the court.”

But the prosecutor opposed the plea saying that the case was criminal and involved the termination of a life of a human being.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Wahab Saka. then ordered the remand of the suspects at the Federal Correctional Centre, Oke Kura, Ilorin.

The case was adjourned till September 12, 2024, for further hearing.

Fleeing Lagos buttock-enlargement doctor now in custody — Police

0

The Lagos State medical doctor, Idara Bassey, who was declared wanted in connection with the death of a 36-year-old woman during a buttock enlargement surgery at a clinic in Lekki Phase 1, is now in police custody, According to Metro reports.

Our correspondent learnt from the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Tuesday, that Bassey is currently being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti.

Bassey had previously fled after Abiola died during a buttock enlargement procedure at her clinic on August 26, 2024.

The Brazilian Butt Lift is a cosmetic surgery procedure that involves removing fat from other parts of the body and injecting it into the buttocks to enhance their fullness and create a rounder shape.

Numerous medical experts have warned about the potential risks of the procedure, particularly following the death of a 31-year-old British woman, Melissa Kerr, during a similar surgery at the Medicana Kadikoy Hospital in Istanbul in 2019.

A BBC report in 2023 revealed that the deceased had not been given enough information to properly assess the risks of the BBL surgery before travelling to undergo the procedure.

Despite warnings about the risks of the enlargement procedure, more videos have surfaced online of women, especially in Lagos, claiming to have successfully undergone the surgery.

While the police confirmed to our correspondent that the nurse who administered the injection to the late 36-year-old had been arrested, the clinic’s owner became a suspect in the case, particularly following her disappearance.

According to Metro reports that Abiola had visited the clinic for the buttock enlargement procedure, which tragically ended in her death after a nurse, allegedly acting under Bassey’s orders, administered an injection.

Earlier, she had left her home in the Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, in the Ibeju Lekki area and directed her driver to take her to the clinic for the procedure.

After the nurse allegedly administered the injection on the doctor’s instructions, the driver who brought Abiola to the clinic reported to the police that she had lost consciousness and began gasping for breath.

When contacted on Tuesday about the progress of the investigation, Hundeyin stated that the doctor is now with the SCID.

Asked whether Bassey would face charges and on what grounds, he said answers to these questions would be provided “after the investigation.”

Lagos task force nabs six illegal fuel marketers

0

Operatives of the Lagos State Task Force on Tuesday arrested six persons suspected of being involved in the illegal sale of petroleum products in different parts of the state.

The Director of Press and Public Affairs of the task force, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, in a statement on Tuesday, noted that the illegal sale of fuel in gallons put members of the public at risk.

He added that the suspects were caught while hawking petrol and selling it to motorists at exorbitant prices along the Maryland, Charity, and Fadeyi areas of the state.

Abdulraheem stressed that such practices further exacerbated the challenges faced by residents amidst the ongoing fuel scarcity.

He identified the suspects as Toibu Ishola, Yakubu Olayiwola, Adebayo Rasak, Maria Balogun, Motunrayo Dosunmu, and John Ogunfowokan.

In his words, “The Lagos State Task Force today conducted a sweeping operation from Fadeyi down to Maryland, and Charity Bus Stop down to Airport Road, where six suspects involved in the illegal sale and display of petroleum products were apprehended.

“These individuals were caught red-handed hawking petrol to motorists at exorbitant rates, thereby further exacerbating the already intense situation faced by many Lagosians.

“The six suspects, Toibu Ishola, 44; Yakubu Olayiwola, 34; Adebayo Rasak, 29; Maria Balogun, 50; Motunrayo Dosunmu, 43; and John Ogunfowokan will be charged in court, and the petroleum products seized will be forfeited to the state government through the court.”

Stressing the reaction of the agency’s chairman to the arrest, Abdulraheem added that the agency would continue to clamp down on black market operators to ensure the safety of lives and property in the state.

He urged the public to report any suspicious activity related to the illegal sale of petroleum products in any part of the state to the agency.

“We are committed to curbing these illegal activities and ensuring that the safety and well-being of the public are not compromised. The actions of these black market operators are not only cruel but also a severe threat to public safety, as the improper handling and storage of petrol could lead to a catastrophic fire disaster.

“The agency also urges the public to report any suspicious activities related to the illegal storage and sale of petroleum products, warning those involved in such practices that they will be met with the full force of the law.

“The Lagos State Task Force will continue to clamp down on these merchants or any other individuals involved in activities that could be harmful to the environment and pose a threat to the safety and well-being of Lagosians,” Abdulraheem concluded.

Man caught defecating in public attacks Lagos official

0

A yet-to-be-identified suspect has been apprehended for allegedly assaulting a civilian staff member of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources while on duty at Berger along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

According to Metro learnt that the incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday.

The suspect was defecating around the median on the expressway when the officials stationed close to the Berger bridge swooped in on him.

In an attempt to resist arrest, the suspect attacked one of the officials and injured him in the process.

A source privy to the incident who pleaded anonymity said, “He was caught just like others but resisted arrest and decided to fight with them. He hit one of the civilian officials with an object on the head which caused him to start bleeding.”

The suspect was said to have been overpowered by other officials who later locked him up in their van.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the incident on his X.com handle on Tuesday. He noted that the suspect had been remanded in prison but would be charged in court.

“One individual was arrested at Berger for injuring one of the civilians employed by the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources while on duty at Berger. He has been remanded in prison custody and will appear again in court on October 29, 2024,” he wrote.

In August, the Lagos State Government vowed to begin prosecution of individuals who engaged in open defecation, particularly along the Berger area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

This followed a joint clean-up of the faeces littering the expressway’s median by sanitation operatives in a partnership initiated by the state government and its  Ogun counterpart.

Meanwhile, over 40 offenders have since been arrested by officials of the environmental task force.
