LASTMA warns against highway crossing as hit-and-run driver kills one

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has warned pedestrians against crossing the highway following a hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of one person in the Onipanu area of the state late Saturday.

LASTMA Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, made the charge in a telephone conversation with According to Metro on Sunday.

According to Online reported on Sunday that the accident, according to the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Nosa Okunbor, occurred around 9 pm.

Okunbor noted that an eyewitness had narrated that the driver of the vehicle after ramming into the victim, absconded the scene.

He added that upon receiving the report, the LASEMA team swung into action to save the life of the victim who had sustained a head injury.

He however noted that despite the efforts of officials of the Pre-Hospital Care Unit, the victim died as a result of the severe injury sustained.

Okunbor narrated, “Upon arrival of the agency’s Response Team at the incident scene, it was observed that an adult male was hit by a vehicle, registration number unknown, and that the driver of the vehicle absconded with the vehicle immediately after the incident.

 “The victim, a yet-to-be-identified adult male, sustained head injuries and was given urgent medical attention by the Agency’s Paramedics from the Pre-Hospital Care Unit before being swiftly transported to the Trauma Centre, Gbagada, for further treatment.

“The yet-to-be-identified adult male victim of the hit-and-run incident died while receiving urgent medical treatment at the Trauma Centre in Gbagada.”

The LASEMA spokesperson noted that the body of the deceased was handed over to officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit for further action.

“The commodity was bagged and handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit office at the Bolade Bus Stop.

Reacting, Taofiq also urged motorists to observe speed limits provided by the state government to prevent recurring road crashes.

He said, “We seize this opportunity to appeal to the motoring public to strictly adhere to speed limit signs installed by the Lagos State Government. Additionally, we urge pedestrians to utilise pedestrian bridges provided by the government at all times.

“The safety of every citizen is the top priority of the government, and the Governor is investing significant resources to ensure overall safety.

“To promote road safety, the government is conducting public education and enlightenment campaigns to raise awareness about the dangers of crossing highways.”

The LASTMA spokesperson condoles with the victim’s family and urged pedestrians to be safety conscious when plying the highway.

According to Metro recalled that on August 19, men of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority apprehended a trailer driver involved in a hit-and-run incident in the Anthony Oke area of the state heading towards Oshodi.

Taofiq had disclosed that the driver, operating a trailer owned by Honeywell Flour Mill Plc (registration number JJJ 764 XV), was apprehended after hitting a pedestrian who was attempting to cross the expressway.

The pedestrian was said to have sustained injury, including a broken left leg, and was promptly attended to by personnel from the Lagos State Ambulance Service who transported him to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.

How I was rescued from collapsed Edo building – Landlord’s daughter

One of the survivors in the collapsed building incident at Ekhator Street, Ekosodin in Benin, Edo State, Dorcas Olushola, on Sunday, said her rescue from the rubble was “miraculous” and that she was lucky to be alive to tell her story.

Recounting her experience to Metro According to at the Trauma Department of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital on Sunday, Olushola stated that the three-storey building started to vibrate and collapsed almost immediately while she was still trying to figure out what was happening.

Olushola, who is also a 300-level student of Social Work at the University of Benin, which borders Ekosodin, said she was on the second floor when the building eventually collapsed.

She said, “I am lucky to have been pulled out alive from the debris. It was raining heavily early that morning and I didn’t know that the compound was flooded because I was in my room on the second floor.

“All of a sudden, I started feeling the vibration of the building. As I was trying to find out what was happening, the building collapsed on me.

“I was rescued from the collapsed building by people. I am lucky to be alive and I thank God for that. I also thank those who rescued me, without them I would have been dead by now.

“I suffered some bruises on my leg but beyond that I am fine. However, the experience was traumatising. I commend the staff members of UBTH as I am currently responding to treatment.

She stated that her father had travelled out of the state and that he was still being expected back in Benin.

Another survivor, Akpodeh Oseoghene, who just graduated from UNIBEN from the Science Laboratory Department, said she saw death but was grateful to God for sparing her life in the disaster.

She stated that trouble started when the room she shared with another student, Akpordoghor Oghenefega, in the bungalow behind the main building, became flooded that Saturday morning.

She said, “During the rain, our room became flooded to our surprise and the first thing we did was to try and put our belongings on a higher platform but while doing that, the main building collapsed and it affected the bungalow. That brought more water into our room and the glass door got broken and injured my roommate, who is also receiving treatment at another department at UBTH.

“We saw a little opening and that was where we passed through to safety. The flood might have caused the building to collapse. It was so much. We were even trying to scoop the water out when the main building collapsed.

“The fourth person, Leonard, got injured when he jumped from the third floor as the building was about to collapse. He is also at the UBTH receiving treatment.

He sustained the worst injury out of the four of us involved in the incident.

A fresh graduate of UNIBEN who lived in the next building said the incident happened between 7.30 and 8 am while it was raining, saying the flooding of the area might have led to the collapse.

He said, “The rain started around 4 am and it became intense at about 7 am. The whole street was flooded and affected some of the houses especially those whose foundation was not high.

“My house was also flooded and we locked our gate but the flood pulled it down and the water came into our rooms. While we were trying to salvage our belongings, I heard a loud noise only to find out that the building had collapsed, damaging our fence and a room.

“The road is not even passable and it was always flooded but the one on Saturday was the most devastating. I hope the authorities will find a solution to it.’

The Edo State Government said an investigation was ongoing to determine why the building collapsed early on Saturday

The Special Adviser to the Edo State governor on Media Project, Crusoe Obaseki, who stated this in a statement, said that the state government had stationed officials at the site to provide an update on the incident.

He said, “The Edo State Government confirms the collapse of a three-storey building in Ekhator Street, off Ekosodin Road beside the University of Benin, Ugbowo, Benin City.

“A rescue team was deployed to the site of the incident and all the trapped students have been rescued alive and are receiving medical attention.

“Emergency Responders including the Edo State Fire Service and officials from the Edo State Command and Control Centre deployed to the scene of the accident have confirmed that there are no fatalities from the incident as at this time.

“Excavators and other heavy equipment are on site to clear the rubble and also remove the other parts of the distressed building.

“The government has ordered a full investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the collapse as well as an audit of other buildings in the area to ascertain their status.

On Sunday, Metro According to observed that the compound had been sealed by the state government who said investigation was ongoing to know the cause of the collapse.

Police hunt fleeing robbers after Niger guesthouse invasion

No fewer than 30 heavily armed robbers have raided a guesthouse and a residence in Minna, Niger State macheting residents and allegedly carting away over 50 phones, N100,000 and a motorcycle popularly called ‘rubber rubber’.

The incident happened around 2am on Thursday when the robbers stormed the street on Eastern Bye Pass Road in Tunga, Minna and first broke into Ben Ja’am Guest House.

They attacked occupants of all the rooms and carried out a thorough search. The robbers succeeded in collecting the phones of all the staff membes while the guests simply handed over their items without any resistance.

According to a source who pleaded anonymity, when the robbers entered the room of a civil defence operative who also lodged in the guest house, they demanded his phones but he refused and attempted to struggle with them over his phone insisting that he had vital contacts in it.

One of the robbers used his machete and tried to cut the security agent on the head but the officer raised his right hand to prevent the machete hitting his head and the weapon inflicted a deep wound on the hand.

The source told According to Metro that when the robbers gained entry into the guest house, they began to demand the handsets of occupants of the rooms which they readily handed over to them.

“They were more than 30 in number. Some were wearing masks while others did not cover their faces. They wore black shirts and trousers like vigilantes.They ordered everyone to lie down flat and not look up and started searching the rooms. They picked any valuable they laid their hands on.

“When they entered the room of the security officer, they were issuing commands and he was telling them to take it easy. He refused to give them his phone and they wanted to take it by force. One of the men tried to hit his head with his machete but he raised his hand to protect the head and the machete cut his hand.”

According to another source, while the robbers were busy in the guesthouse, one of them who stood at the entrance gate sighted a man watching the incident from one of the houses on the street. He said the robber trained his torchlight on the man and he quickly dashed back into the compound.

“Before the man could lock the door of the house, about five of the robbers from the guesthouse kicked the door open and entered the compound.

“They went into all the rooms in the compound and collected over 10 phones as well as other valuables They also collected N100,000 from one of the tenants. However, they did not inflict injuries on any of the tenants because they all cooperated.

“The robbers also collected a brand new motorcycle popularly known as rubber rubber packed inside the guesthouse,” the source said.

When According to Metro contacted the Niger State Police spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun, on Sunday for his reaction, he confirmed the attack pointing out that the robbery information reached the police late, as a result, the robbers had made their escape before the police could go after them.

“On Friday, at about 0500hrs, a report was received at Tudun-Wada Division that some hoodlums invaded a hotel at about 0300hrs along Eastern Bye-pass, Minna, and robbed about five guests of the hotel of their handsets and other valuables. The robbers were reported to have also robbed some residents around the hotel.

“Unfortunately, the information was not received on time, as the robbers had left the scene before the report got to the police. However, the incident is under investigation with a view to arrest and prosecute the fleeing robbers,” Abiodun stated.

NDLEA arrests auto parts dealer, bizwoman over UK-bound cocaine

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested an Ibadan-based businesswoman, Adewunmi Dorcas and an auto parts dealer, Arinze Ora, over attempts to export consignments of opioids and cocaine to London, United Kingdom and Congo Brazzaville, respectively.

The NDLEA officers at the export shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, had on Friday, September 6, 2024, intercepted a cargo going to the UK.

According to a statement on Sunday by the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, a thorough search of the consignment revealed that 924 bottles of codeine-based syrup weighing 135.70kg and 5,250 tablets of Rohypnol were hidden in cartons of foodstuffs.

“The freight agent, Owojori Olanrewaju Sunday, who presented the cargo for export, was promptly arrested. Further investigation led to the arrest of another suspect, Adewunmi Akeem Temitope, who claimed that his mother, 58-year-old Mrs. Adewunmi Adebola Dorcas sent the consignment to him from Ibadan to deliver to the agent. A follow-up operation on Saturday, September 7, led to the arrest of Mrs Adewunmi in Ibadan, where she deals in foodstuffs and cargo export.

“In his statement, the agent, Owojori, confessed that he had been working for Mrs Adewunmi to export cargoes to the UK, adding that he was paid N2,411,000.00 for the job, while he was paid N2.1million for a similar consignment handled for the businesswoman earlier,” the statement added.

Babafemi also said the NDLEA operatives at the same export shed of the Lagos airport on September 11 intercepted some cartons of auto spare parts and Checker powder custard going to Congo Brazzaville on Ethiopian Airlines.

He added that a diligent search of the cargo led to the discovery of 300 grams of cocaine concealed in the containers of Checker powder custard packed together with some auto parts.

“A follow-up operation led to the arrest of the sender of the consignment, Arinze Ora, who deals in auto parts at Shop 12, Block 7 Aspanda Trade Fair Auto Parts Wing, Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos,” Babafemi said.

Additionally, Babafemi said operatives arrested two brothers, Ikechukwu Ikeabba and Ugochukwu Ikeabba, who were sponsors of drug traffickers who specialised in exporting drugs by ingestion to Vietnam on September 10.

“Their arrest followed a diligent investigation of an earlier arrest of an Onitsha, Anambra State based-businessman, Ibeanusi Solomon Nosike, who excreted 68 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.282 kilograms after 12 days of excretion observation after he was arrested at the local wing of the Lagos airport by the NDLEA operatives.

“The 36-year-old Ibeanusi was arrested in the early hours of Thursday, August 8, 2024, at the old domestic terminal of the Lagos airport while attempting to board the first flight out of Lagos to Abuja where he was scheduled to join a Qatar Airways flight to Vietnam at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at about 10 am, the same day,” Babafemi said.

He also said the brothers were linked to another Vietnam-bound businessman, 54-year-old Paul Mbadugha, who was arrested by the NDLEA operatives at the Abuja airport on  August 12, 2024, during the outward clearance of Qatar Airways flight QR 1432 to Hanoi, Vietnam via Doha after he tested positive to ingestion of cocaine.

He recalled that four days under observation, Mbadugha excreted a total of 88 wraps of the illicit drug with a gross weight of 1.710 kilograms.

“At the time of the arrest of the two kingpins, the Ikeabba brothers,  they were caught with 87 wraps of cocaine dummies used in training intending swallowers,” Babafemi added.

In Gombe State, Babafemi said the NDLEA operatives acting on credible intelligence on September 14 arrested three suspects: Auwal Abdullahi, Isah Rabiu and Abubakar Da’u along Bauchi-Gombe Road while travelling in a DAF truck marked GME 552 ZU.

He noted that a search of the vehicle led to the seizure of 2,490,000 pills of Tramadol concealed with bags of salt.

In another operation in Kaduna State, Babafemi said a suspect, Idris Adamu, was arrested with 41.5 kilograms of cannabis sativa at Kachia town on September 10,  while two suspects: Godiya  Jikuk, and Yusuf Umaru, were nabbed at Isinbode-Ekiti, Ekiti State with a total of 73.6kg cannabis on Wednesday, September 11.

“In Bauchi State, no fewer than 208,920 pills of Tramadol and Diazepam were seized from a suspect, Chinedu Asadu, 35, on Thursday, September 13, while 104kg of cannabis was recovered from two suspects, Abba Abdullahi and Mustapha Yahaya, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday, September 10, by operatives in Lagos State.

No fewer than 350,000 bottles of codeine-based syrup were discovered by the NDLEA operatives in two containers shipped from India during a joint examination of the containers with men of the Nigeria Customs Service and other security agencies at the Tincan port in Lagos on Tuesday, September 10. The containers were part of those targeted by the NDLEA for 100 per cent examination,” the statement concluded.

Psychiatrists blame hardship for rising suicide attempts

Psychiatrists have warned that the current economic hardship in Nigeria may lead to an increase in suicidal thoughts among citizens, urging Nigerians to visit clinics for mental health check-ups.

According to Metro reports that between August 25 and September 4, 2024, there had been at least five suicide attempts, with four individuals reportedly taking their lives in Ogun and Lagos states.

Recently, Nigerians across many states of the federation staged protests under the banner of ‘#EndBadGovernance’ to voice their frustration over widespread hunger and hardship affecting the population.

While some victims of these suicide incidents did not survive to share the reasons behind their actions, others who were prevented from ending their lives attributed their attempts to their financial struggles.

In Lagos State, a 65-year-old visually impaired man, Ewenla Adetomiwa, was rescued after attempting suicide by jumping into the lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge. He had brought his two children with him, intending to end his life, believing the government would take care of them after his death.

A similar incident occurred on August 30, when an 18-year-old boy named Elijah, believed to be mentally unstable, attempted to jump into the same lagoon.

Likewise, earlier on August 28, a 35-year-old man, Emmanuel Urhobocha, took his own life in his apartment on Alafia Street in Sango-Ota, located in the Ado-Odo Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.

According to Metro also reported that on August 28, a 32-year-old man named Olúwaseun Shorinola took his own life in the Kémta area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

On September 4, a 26-year-old man named Joshua Freeborn ended his life in his apartment at Olapo Family House on Sokoto Road, located in the Atan-Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Ogun NNPP warns OGISIEC against underhand dealings

The New Nigeria People’s Party, Ogun State has said that it would not hesitate to take legal actions against the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commissions if it suspected any foul play in the electoral process of the forthcoming November 16 local government election.

The Chairman of the party, Olufemi Aina, stated this during the party primary elections for its councillorship and chairmanship aspirants held at the party secretariat, Adatan, Abeokuta on Sunday.

Aina insisted that NNPP won’t take it lightly with state electoral body if it fails to conduct the elections according to the laid down guidelines but would rather allowed a political party to be teleguiding its sacred role

He said, “We are here to elect the candidates that will be representing our party during the November 16 local government elections

“I must however say that this time around, OGSIEC must not allow any act that could lead to questionable integrity, they should stop it because if they do, we at NNPP will challenge them and ask them questions”

“They need to be very careful and avoid anything that can question the integrity of the elctoral process, they should not engage in any scheme-mongering tactics that will scuttle democracy, we as members of NNPP are going to resist such attempts very vigorously, this local government election is very important to the community.”

He also admonished OGSIEC to consult with INEC for an hitch-free election.

“I will urge the OGSIEC to consult with INEC to see how things are being done.

“We have our reservations as to the way they are going about it, and if they think that they can short-change us they will have this NNPP to contend with,” he added.

Talking about the preparedness of the party for the local government elections, Aina said, “Our party is prepared and ready for the challenge, we have been working for about three weeks, we are united and that is why our candidates for the elections are the product of consensus. So, NNPP is not joking at all with this local government elections”.

APC to monitor Kano use of N3bn flood relief funds

The All Progressives Congress in Kano State, on Sunday, said it will closely monitor the state government’s use of the N3 billion flood relief funds provided by the Federal Government.

The party’s Chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, who disclosed this on Sunday stressed that the APC is committed to ensuring transparency and accountability in the funds’ utilisation.

While expressing concern about the potential diversion of the Federal Government’s N3 billion flood relief funds, Abbas, who recalled the previous misuse of palliatives highlighted the importance of using the funds for their intended purpose, to benefit the people.

To oversee the distribution of palliatives, a committee led by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin has been constituted.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has tackled the present administration’s recent effort to discredit him by likening him to a former United States
President, Donald Trump, saying it is a glaring sign of the weakness of the government.

Obi who spoke through his Media Office, in a statement titled, “Why desperate Obi traducers are kissing the dust?” signed by his Spokesman, Ibrahim Umar, in Abuja, on Sunday, also said the move by the incumbent reflect their crassness and inability to discern the realities, especially the pains and pangs their actions and policies have foisted on the nation in the past year.

According to him, desperate propagandists along with their presidential enablers were indulging in the distortion of facts all in a bid to destroy his impeccable image.

The statement added, “For these traducers, it would be a huge omission for a day to pass without finding something to negatively link Obi within the media space, if he and his family members are not being arrested imaginarily (a kite being flown to test waters?), he is being wickedly accused of sponsoring violence or twisting his public appearances in a manner to suite their dubious motives.

“Perhaps the most laughable of such delusions is the Presidency’s effort to ridicule Obi by dragging his name into the United States of America, USA electioneering process, by scandalously linking him with the Republican Party Candidate, Donald Trump.

“We are very much aware of the motive behind these ridiculous comparisons, which is their uncanny way of currying favour so undeserved from the Democrats.

“Nigerians who mused about the derisory and facetious comparison have tried to ask: ‘Will your calling Peter Obi ‘a Trump’, translate to or mean that Tinubu is Harris?.”

He pointed out that every discerning mind who wants to compare Obi and Tinubu and attempts to equate them with the two American Presidential candidates, Trump and Harris, knows too well the similarities and parallels in terms of morality, transparency, good-standing antecedents and people-focused policies.

“Nigerians are not so gullible to be fooled by such empty propaganda.

“It’s even ironic that the spin doctors of a leader who since the early campaign days into over a year as President has remained disturbingly aloof and seemingly incapable of presenting himself and his policies to Nigerians through the media, and who has continued to evade public accountability, are trying to malign Obi who has easily emerged in all ramifications as the most visible, focused and articulate political personality in this dispensation.

“Obi remains a man who has not only become the conscience of the people but also their hope for a new and egalitarian Democracy.

“Rather than strive to market and justify their rusty and anti-people deleterious policies that have put Nigeria and Nigerians in the most horrendous, conditions, they have resolved to convey misleading accounts of our Principal’s activities just to distract the credulous public.”

He noted that understanding the frustration of selling a bad product in a competitive market, the FairPlay rule demands that there is no room for de-marketing a good product by forcefully associating it with the ugly product.

“We know the intention of these trolls and spin doctors, who have also gone ahead to provoke our Principal’s massive supporters across the country and diaspora by twisting his recent media interview to insinuate that he is ready to be Vice President to anyone.

“But that fallacy could not be true of a man who has repeatedly stated in various forums that he is not desperate to be President but desperate to see Nigeria work.

“Such plebian conduct that is utterly devoid of integrity, remains the height of mischief from propagandists, who are envious of the rising profile of our Principal.

PDP asks FG to review anti-people policies

As Muslims observe Eid-el Maulud tomorrow, the Peoples Democratic Party has urged the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government to reassess all policies that negatively affect the people and focus more on citizens’ welfare.

The Federal Government had announced Monday as a public holiday to allow Muslims to celebrate Eid-el Maulud.

In a statement on Sunday, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, urged the Federal Government to address wasteful spending, tackle corruption, and focus resources on projects that directly benefit Nigerians.

The statement read in part “The Peoples Democratic Party celebrates with Nigerians, especially the Muslim Ummah on the occasion of the Eid-el Maulud, charging them to strengthen their resolve for a national rebirth to overcome the biting economic hardship and worsening insecurity fuelled by the anti-people policies of the All Progressives Congress administration.

“The Party urges Nigerians to use the occasion to reinforce their hope in the Almighty Allah for direction as well as care for one another especially at this critical time when millions of citizens have been subjected to misery, hopelessness and utter destitution as a result of bad governance by the APC.

“Eid-el Maulud, the celebration of the birth of the Holy Prophet Mohammed (SAW), offers humanity and indeed our nation, especially leaders at all levels, the rare opportunity to retrace our steps and submit to the Will of the Almighty Allah in all our dealings as exemplified in the life and teachings of the Holy Prophet.”

“Furthermore, the PDP charges the Federal Government to end profligacies, curb corruption, be more sensitive in prioritizing the need of the citizens by channelling resources to projects and programmes that have a direct bearing on the welfare of Nigerians.”

Few days to the governorship election in Edo State, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the Ondo State election, Agboola Ajayi, has declared that the party would win the poll.

Ajayi, however, called for unity among the party leaders and faithful to ensure victory for the ruling party on the Saturday, September 21 governorship election in the state.

Ajayi stated this in a chat with journalists in Akure, the state capital on Sunday.

According to him, the PDP was well accepted in Edo State, saying it was indicative of the resolve of the party to take up the challenge of restoring the glory of Nigeria.

He said, “The mood in the country today is that the PDP is the only messiah the people can look up to because of its antecedent of a capable manager of people, economy, and country.

“With the show of camaraderie displayed, it is obvious that the party is ready to take up the challenge to rescue Nigeria from her current handlers. I can’t remember the last time the party supported a cause like this Edo election with its full strength as we have seen there today.”

Ajayi, who was a former deputy governor in Ondo State, advised the electorate to queue behind the governorship candidate of PDP in Edo, State, Mr Asue Igodalo on Saturday as he told the party faithful to remain resolute in retaining the state.

On the November 16 governorship poll in Ondo Stat, Ajayi promised to turn around the fortune of women and empower them financially when elected as governor, as he promised 35 percent women inclusion in his government.

He said, “The United Nations affirmation on gender equality would be adhered to from February 24 when I assume office as the governor of this state

“We will ensure 35 percent of women are given appointments and we will also turn around the fortune of our women and empower them financially.”
