Police nab Jigawa man for fraud, motorbike theft, animal rustling 

The Jigawa State Police Command, on Monday, confirmed the arrest of a fraudster for motorbike thief, and animal rustler in separate operations.

The command’s spokesman, DSP Lawan Adam, who made the disclosure at a press briefing held in Dutse, the Jigawa State Capital, on Monday, said, “On August 28, 2024, operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse arrested Ilyasu Munkaila, 45, from Asayaya village in Kiyawa Local Government Area, in connection with a case of fraud conspiracy.”

Also, he disclosed that Munkaila confessed to committing the crime and revealed that he was paid N50,000 as his share of the proceeds.

The PPRO stated that the arrest is linked to a report filed by one, Alhaji Sani Muhammad, 50, from Kano State, who alleged that unknown individuals defrauded him at Nafara village, Birnin Kudu Birnin Kudu, on July 29, 2024.

He revealed that besides Munkaila’s arrest, the police also recovered two motorbikes, two sheep, and a ram from the suspects.

“On 28/08/2024, at about 1400hrs Operatives attached to the Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Dutse acting on credible Intelligence arrested one Ilyasu Munkaila ‘m’ age 45yrs of Asayaya village, Kiyawa LGA in connection with the case of fraud and criminal conspiracy.”

During interrogation, the suspect admitted to committing the crime, adding that he got his share of fifty thousand naira (N50,000.00k) upon successful completion of the deal and he was indeed paid.”

The Command has assured that efforts are being made to apprehend other suspects involved in the crime.

The Jigawa State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating crime and ensuring public safety in the state.

Ekiti PDP caretaker chairman vows to reconcile members, unify party

The Chairman of the Caretaker Committee for the Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State, Dare Adeleke, has pledged to reconcile and unite all members while restoring confidence in the party within the state.

A statement issued by the PDP Southwest Publicity Secretary, Sanya Atofarati, and made available to our correspondent in Ado Ekiti on Monday, revealed that Adeleke made this commitment during the inauguration of the newly constituted caretaker committee. The event was officiated by the party’s Southwest National Vice Chairman, Kamarudeen Ajisafe, in Ibadan on Sunday.

The caretaker chairman assured that all factions within the party would be brought together, emphasizing the committee’s readiness to get to work immediately.

He said, “Our all-inclusive agenda will include party discipline, reconciliation, unity, welfare, teamwork, and renewing confidence in the party.”

Adeleke also promised to ensure “a smooth transition of the party leadership to Ekiti PDP leaders through the conduct of credible congresses as directed by the party at the national level.”

Alaba Agboola, the immediate past chairman of Ekiti PDP, who officially handed over to Adeleke during the occasion, stated that strengthening the PDP to win elections in the state would require the collective efforts of all members.
Ajisafe, who inaugurated the committee on behalf of the National Working Committee, expressed confidence in the newly constituted committee’s ability to harmonise, reposition, and lead the party to victory in the state.

Speaking at the event, which was attended by party stalwarts from the six Southwest states, a former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Alhaji Hazeem Gbolarumi, urged the Ekiti Caretaker Committee members to seize the opportunity to restore the party’s reputation.

In his remarks, Atofarati commended the leadership of the PDP under Governors Seyi Makinde and Ademola Adeleke for providing the enabling environment for the party to thrive in the region.

Atofarati noted, “The appointment by the party’s National Working Committee of the 22-member committee, headed by Hon. Dare Adeleke, was carried out in accordance with the provisions of Section 21(2) (a-b) of the PDP constitution.”

He listed the members of the caretaker committee as Dare Adeleke (Chairman), Ayodele Joshua, Mr Agbetuyi Joshua, Olonila Benjamin, Mrs Mojisola Omotosho, Mrs Modupe Oke, and Mrs Bosede Ayodele.

Other members include Ojo Ayeni, Mrs Abeni Olayinka, Ademola Alade, Afolayan Akutupu, Bobby Jeje, Sina Animashaun, Araromi Samuel, Festus Akinbode, Ade Fajana, Ayo Oguntuase, Olanipekun Boboye, Adebayo Jackson, Ojo Fasasi, and Olatunji Ayofe (Secretary), with Asabo Victor as Administrative Secretary.

Missing teenager raped, murdered on father’s farm in Ogun

An 18-year-old girl, Habibat Akinsanya, who had been reported missing, was discovered dead on her father’s farm in Obasa, Mile 6, along Ajebo Road, in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.

According to Online learnt on Monday that the victim was discovered dead on Sunday, bearing multiple machete wounds to her head and other parts of her body, with her hands bound behind her back.

According to reliable police sources, the victim was sexually assaulted before being murdered, as our correspondent was informed.

A police source, who wished to remain anonymous due to not having the authority to speak on behalf of the state command, informed our correspondent that the brutal murder could be linked to a revenge attack on the family.

The source refused to elaborate further when our correspondent inquired if it was a cult-related reprisal.

Meanwhile, According to Online learnt exclusively from the Ogun State Police Command that the incident is being investigated as a premeditated murder.

The deceased’s father, Shamsuddeen, had previously reported his daughter missing to the Kemta Police Division on August 31, 2024.

On August 30, 2024, Akinsanya reportedly left her father’s house to assist her sister, who operates a Point of Sale business in the Kemta area, where she was allegedly approached by Onyeka.

Onyeka, who the police have identified as a primary suspect in the murder and who typically worked for the father, allegedly told the deceased that her mother needed her at the farm to help with the cassava harvest.

Our correspondent, however, learnt that the family grew suspicious of foul play when the deceased’s sister could not find her at either the shop or home. This led the father to report the situation to the Kemta Police Division.

The cop said, “The father informed the police that Akinsanya had left the house to assist at her sister’s at her Point of Sale shop on Mile 6, Ajebo Road. However, when the sister arrived at the shop, Akinsanya was not there and did not return home.

“This case does not involve kidnapping, as none of the typical elements are present. While the exact motive behind the murder remains unclear, rumours suggest it was premeditated. The victim was not forcibly abducted but was lured by the perpetrator under the pretence that her mother needed her at the farm. Once there, the perpetrator restrained her, raped and then murdered her.

“The father reported receiving a phone call from someone demanding money. The number was tracked, and the police searched the last known location of the number in Oke Egunya, Totoro, for hours. This search yielded no results until a call was received indicating that the girl’s body had been discovered on her father’s farm.

The command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, informed our correspondent on Monday that an investigation had been initiated to uncover the circumstances surrounding the murder, noting that a manhunt had commenced to locate the fleeing suspect.

She stated, “In cases of missing persons, the police typically ask the complainant to wait 24 to 48 hours before filing a report, as some individuals return home within that timeframe. This is a standard procedure followed by law enforcement.

“A manhunt has been launched to aid in the apprehension of Onyeka, who is currently at large. Our officers have also initiated a discreet investigation into the matter.”

Wike to face disciplinary committee over anti-party activities

The Peoples Democratic Party has summoned the former Governor of Rivers State and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over alleged anti-party activities.

The PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, made this known on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s programme, Sunrise Daily.

Abdullahi stated that Wike had been summoned in a letter to appear before the Tom Ikimi-led PDP disciplinary committee set up by the party’s National Working Committee.

He said, “Three weeks ago, we put up two committees in place, that of reconciliation and disciplinary, and Nyesom Wike is one of the persons to face the disciplinary committee, which is headed by elder statesman Chief Tom Ikimi.

“The disciplinary committee will look into issues of anti-party activities. We’ve been receiving petitions regarding anti-party activities or sabotaging the party throughout the primary, leading to where we are now. These petitions against Wike and other party members have been aggregated and sent to the committee.

“Some party members even felt that Wike shouldn’t have gotten to this level still as a member of the PDP and they have been writing to the leadership.”

Speaking further, Abdullahi stated that the former Rivers state governor’s statement about “putting fire in their states” about PDP governors is wrong and unacceptable.

He added, “Wike should be able to manage his words carefully; that was a very disappointing remark. We weren’t expecting him to say that, and to be honest with you, we are not with him on that.”

Abdullahi stated this two days hours after Wike expressed his happiness serving in the Bola Tinubu administration, despite the criticisms and his threat against PDP governors supporting Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State.

Addressing party members on Saturday during the PDP Congress in Port Harcourt, Wike threatened to cause a political crisis in the states of any PDP governor who tried to interfere in the party’s affairs in the South-South state.

The FCT minister also stated that anyone who is angry with his position in Tinubu’s government should go and hug the transformer.

Kebbi gov swears in new LG chairmen

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, on Monday, swore in the newly elected 21 local government chairmen in the state.

Candidates of the All Progressives Congress were declared winners in the election held on Saturday by the state electoral commission.

The swearing which was held at the Presidential Lodge in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, was attended by the governor and top political office holders in the state.

The state Chief Judge, Umar Abubakar, administered the oath of office to the elected chairmen who are expected to be in charge for three years.

Earlier in his speech, the governor tasked them to live above board by ensuring dividends of democracy at the grassroots.

He stated, “Now that you are sworn in, I want you to commence your job immediately and make sure you impact your people at the community level.

“You should all go home and swear in your councillors for immediate and effective commencement of work in all the wards in the state.

“I promise to work with all of you 100 per cent.”

The governor also urged them to involve people of their communities to benefit from their reign as chairmen and councillors of local governments.

The state government immediately issued Hilux operational vehicles to the chairmen and their deputies.

Gunmen kill many, burn houses, shops, in Yobe

Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents looted and set ablaze shops and houses in Mafa village in Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe.

The Yobe State Police Command Spokesman, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria in Damaturu on Monday.

”We are yet to ascertain the number of lives lost in the incident, which occurred at about 4pm on Sunday in the remote village.

” Babagana Goni and Bako Ibrahim, both Mafa residents, reported the incident to the Tarmuwa Divisional Police Station.

” Suspected Boko Haram terrorists armed with rifles and RPGs attacked Mafa Ward on more than 50 motorcycles and set ablaze many shops and houses.

“ The terrorists also killed many people, but we are yet to ascertain the actual number of the casualties,” the spokesman said.

He said that the gunmen also dropped some flyers with Arabic inscriptions.

No fewer than three students of Faudiya School in Geidam Local Government Area of Yobe State have been confirmed dead after an attack by gunmen at the school early Friday.

Residents, traders urge Ogun to address rising food prices

Some residents of Magboro and Mowe in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State have urged the state government to address the rising cost of food in the state.

The residents, who spoke with According to Metro in separate interviews on Sunday, lamented that the high cost of food items had continued to strain their finances.

They blamed the high cost of commodities and staple foods on the rising cost of oil, which they claimed had a ripple effect on transportation and logistics.

Comparing the current prices to what was applicable in the past, a trader identified simply as Lateefat noted that there had been a significant increase.

She stressed that the situation got worse under the current administration.

“Two weeks ago, the prices were the same as today. There has been no decrease. Since President Bola Tinubu was inaugurated into office, everything has been on the rise. Prices have never come down.

“During President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime, a bag of beans cost around N4,000 to N5,000, but now, it’s between N50,000 and above.”

A resident, Samuel Ibekwe, lamented that despite the high cost of living, employers had failed to increase the salaries of their employees.

He noted that his current salary could not sufficiently take care of his family while urging the Ogun State Government to find a means of alleviating the hardship on residents.

“My salary has not increased, but the cost of everything else has. Before, I could afford to buy a full basket of tomatoes for N1,500, but now that same basket costs N3,000 or more. I don’t know how we are supposed to manage.

“My appeal is that the government should find a lasting solution to this issue, and the state government should find a means to alleviate residents of this hardship,” Ibekwe said.

Another resident, Kemi Adeyemi, lamented that the rising prices had affected her household budget which had caused her family to forsake some essentials.

Adeyemi noted that although the government rolled out measures to address the hardship, the measures had not addressed the situation.

She said, “I used to budget N10,000 for my weekly grocery shopping. Now, that same amount barely covers half of what it used to. Everything is more expensive; rice, beans, vegetables, even palm oil.

I have to make tough choices about what to buy and what to leave out.

“We keep hearing that billions of naira were released to vulnerable families, but I have yet to see anyone receive the funds. It is just like the government is not ready to address the situation because the vulnerable are not getting the funds.”

When contacted for a reaction on the efforts of the Ogun State Government in cushioning the effect of the rising prices on the residents, the Chief Press Secretary to the Ogun governor, Lekan Adeniran, did not respond to the calls and messages sent to his telephone number as of the time of filing this report.

Nasarawa suspected drug trafficker arrested, exhibits recovered

The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a suspected drug trafficker in the Toto Local Government Area of the state.

According to the command, the suspect was arrested with 15 bags of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, following painstaking efforts of its gallant officers in the area.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Ramhan Nansel, disclosed this in a statement in Lafia on Sunday.

He said, “The Nasarawa State Police Command in its relentless drive to tame the excesses of criminals have on 31/8/2024 at about 1300hrs arrested one Saturday Gabriel ‘M’ 43 years of Edo State while one other escaped.

“Consequently, a Toyota Camry with registration number: Lagos KSF 843 FN and 15 bags of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp were recovered from the suspect as exhibit.”

Nansel explained that the arrest was based on a tip-off that a Toyota Camry with two occupants was sighted heading to the Nasarawa Toto area and reasonably suspected to be carrying criminals.

He further narrated that acting on the strength of the information, some personnel attached to the Toto Division were strategically deployed to be on the lookout for the suspects.

“Consequently, the vehicle was intercepted at Gadabuke area of Toto LGA, Nasarawa state where the suspect was arrested and the exhibits were recovered,” he added.

The statement added that the state Commissioner of Police, Umar Shehu Nadada, had directed the Divisional Police Officer to transfer the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Lafia for onward handing over to the NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution.

FRSC warns against loading as children die in crash

The Ogun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has warned motorists in the state against overloading their vehicles with passengers or goods while embarking on road journeys.

The warning came following the death of two children in a lone crash that occurred in the late hours of Saturday along the Itori area of the state.

According to the Ogun FRSC Public Education Officer, Florence Okpe, in a statement on Sunday, seven other occupants of the white Toyota Camry with number plate AGL36JA sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Okpe added that excessive speeding on the part of the driver, coupled with the overloading of passengers, led to the crash that occurred at about 11 p.m.

She added that the injured victims were taken to the Ifo General Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the same hospital morgue.

She said, “It was a lone crash that involved one vehicle with the following details: A white Toyota Camry with registration number AGL36JA.

“Seven male adults, one male child, and one female child were involved in the crash. One male child and one female child were killed, while others sustained different forms of injury in the crash. The injured victims were taken to the General Hospital, Ifo, and the corpses were deposited at the morgue.

“The suspected cause of the crash was excessive speed and overloading. The car was overloaded with passengers.”

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun Sector Commander, Akinwumi Fasakin, described the crash as an avoidable incident if the driver had taken caution in overloading the vehicle.

Fasakin, who spoke through Okpe, noted that the act of overloading vehicles with goods or passengers violated traffic rules.

“The Sector Commander, Ogun Sector Command, Akinwumi Fasakin, condemned the crash and described it as a lack of value for life by the driver and passengers who saw nothing wrong in a car being outrageously overloaded.

“He urged motorists to avoid overloading their vehicles either with goods or passengers, as it is very dangerous to the driver and other road users, and it’s against the traffic rules.

“He further commiserated with the families of the crash victims and wished the injured victims a quick recovery,” Okpe noted.

According to Metro reported on August 23 that a truck crushed two persons to death in the Papalanto area of the state.

According to the spokesman for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, the accident happened in the early hours of the day.

Akinbiyi had attributed the cause of the accident which involved an Iveco Truck with number plate KJA 166 XJ and a tricycle with number plate TRE 627 VP, to dangerous driving by the truck driver.

He added that four people including two males and two females were involved in the accident with the two females crushed to death.

NAHCO rewards cleaner with cash, promotion for returning $10,000

The Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc (NAHCO Aviance) has rewarded a staff member of the Company, Mr. Auwal Ahmed Dankode, who found and returned $10,000, while cleaning an aircraft in Kano.

The Kano-born Dankode was hosted at the headquarters of the company at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos for his transparency, honesty and integrity.

Dankode was assigned alongside other colleagues to clean the MS 878 passenger aircraft operated by Egypt Air, when he found the money left behind by the passenger on seat No 25H,  at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, on Wednesday.

According to Metro learnt that he promptly turned the money over to the airline’s Station Manager.

The Group Managing Director/CEO of NAHCO, Mr Indranil Gupta, while commending Dankode for being a true NAHCO ambassador, who had put into use the training he received in the company, announced a handsome cash reward, instant promotion and appointment as NAHCO Brand Ambassador, a statement from the company said.

Gupta, who led the management team in appreciating the employee, said, “We are truly proud of the exemplary character exhibited by Dankode. He is a true NAHCO ambassador and an embodiment of what NAHCO stands for: honesty, integrity, diligence and hard work.”

The GMD added, “We celebrate your being and want this to be just the beginning. Let the values which had been instilled by your family, guide you and groom you into an ideal leader, which everyone will be proud of.”

The CEO pointed out that the majority of NAHCO staff members exhibit these values in their everyday work.

Also speaking on the occasion, the Chief Financial Officer of NAHCO, Mr. Adeoye Emiloju, commended Dankode for exhibiting high integrity.

“The integrity you’ve displayed is not something that anyone can pretend to have. You’ve shown that it is something that is in you,” Emiloju pointed out.

The COO, Mr. Didier Steullet, also encouraged Dankode to stay on the good path.

Steullet said: “What you have done is very good. You’re the example not only of the week but also probably of the year. My only recommendation is that, please, keep going in the same way. Remain yourself and don’t get carried away with the adulation that you are receiving on social media. You need to remain grounded and make a difference in the world.
