The Plateau State Police Command says it has arrested a teenager for having sexual intercourse with three sisters in the state

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, made this known in Jos on Friday while briefing journalists on the operational breakthroughs recorded by the command in the state capital and other parts of the state

According to the Commissioner, the sixteen-year-old suspect identified as Miracle Igwebuike was arrested in the Tudun Wada community, Jos North Local Government Area, after having carnal knowledge with the victims aged 6, 9, and 12

The Commissioner said, “On 24/08/2024 at about 4:30 pm, one Victoria Livinus and one Kauna Stephen, both female of Tudun Wada Jos, reported at the ‘A’ division Police station that one Miracle Igwbuike male, 16 years of the same address, has been having carnal knowledge of their daughters, one Josephine Livinus, 9 years old, one Jennifer Livinus, 6 years old and one Blessing Stephen, 12 years old, all female of same address.

“Upon receipt of the report, the suspect was immediately arrested by officers attached to the division and brought to the station for interview.

“He confessed to the crime and further stated that one Bongkat Dombin, female, 38 years of the same address, had been seducing and having sexual intercourse with him since he was 13 years old.

The said Bongkat Dombin has also been arrested, and she confessed to the crime.

The commissioner also paraded over 20 other suspects for various offences, including armed robbery, kidnapping, criminal conspiracy, extortion, illegal possession of firearms and intimidation, among others.

He said all the suspects would be charged in court after the investigation was concluded

London introduces direct bus service to protect Jewish communities

Transport authorities in London have introduced a new public bus service linking two areas of the capital with large Jewish populations, as anti-Semitic incidents hit record levels.

London mayor Sadiq Khan said he had been struck by the fear felt by Jews who told him they had received abuse when changing buses to travel between the two areas.

The new service, which began this week, provides a direct link between Golders Green and Stamford Hill, removing the need for passengers to change buses.

The new service was welcomed by Jewish groups.

“In a period where our community is encountering unprecedented anti-Semitism, any measure that bolsters the confidence of Jewish individuals in using public transport is immensely valued,” said co-chairs of the London Jewish Forum Andrew Gilbert and Adrian Cohen.

Khan said the Jewish community has been campaigning for a direct transport link for 16 years.

The Jewish community was “frightened because of a mass increase in anti-Semitism since October 7 last year” when Hamas attacked southern Israel, he told BBC radio.

“I was told stories by families who, where they changed buses from Stamford Hill to Golders Green at Finsbury Park, were frightened about the abuse they had received,” he said.

Passengers using the service on Friday told AFP they were happy it was now available.

“I feel safer and it’s very convenient,” said one woman with her four-year-old son wearing a kippa.

She said she had “never had a problem myself. But antisemitism is rising for sure.”

“I avoid going out in the evening,” she added.

Another passenger, Jochanan, 70, said he usually took a taxi to visit family in Golders Green because the area where you had to change buses was “known to be violent.”

He said he was very concerned about the current situation in London.

“The old generation says the situation now reminds them of Germany before the war in the 1930s,” he said.

Anti-Semitic incidents in the UK hit record levels in the first half of this year, according to one Jewish charity.

The Community Security Trust (CST), which monitors anti-Semitism in Britain, recorded 1,978 such incidents from January to June, its highest six-month tally since it began its count in 1984.

It said it was the continuation of a surge seen after the October 7 attack.

The number represented a 105-percent increase on the 964 incidents recorded in the same period in 2023, the trust added.

The Defence Headquarters on Friday said troops during the week killed a total of 152 terrorists and arrested 109.

The military high command also stated that the strongholds of two notorious terrorist leaders — the Sadiku enclave at Tsora Hill in Safana Local Government Area, Katsina State; and the Yusuf Enclave in Yadi Forest, Giwa LG, Kaduna State, were destroyed.

In a statement by the Director of Media Operations, Edward Buba, the troops’ achievements were an indication that the military was steadily progressing towards the goal of destroying all criminal elements.

He said, “The war against terrorists, insurgents, violent extremists and others perpetrating insecurity in the country rages, and troops are sustaining the momentum to achieve victory. Indeed, the armed forces are steadily progressing towards the goal of destruction of all these elements.

“Given recent events, the military learns every day and makes improvements on ways to better deal with threat situations posed by these terror groups. Troops are moving in against the terrorists and denying them freedom of action.

“During the week, troops carried out surgical operations against two prominent terrorist commanders and decimated their strongholds. Namely, Sadiku enclave in Tsora Hill in Safana LGA of Katsina State and Alhaji Yusuf enclave in Yadi Forest in Giwa LGA of Kaduna State.”

“Overall, troops operations during the week resulted in 152 terrorists neutralised, 109 arrested and 91 hostages rescued,“ Buba said.

He noted that during the operations against crude oil theft, products worth N795 million were recovered.

He said,” In the South-South, troops denied the oil theft of the estimated sum of N795,683,395.00 only. Furthermore, troops crippled crude oil theft activities at the following locations through air interdiction: Bugama, Idama, Cawtorne Channel and Krakrama, all in Rivers State. Troops also apprehended two female terrorist collaborators responsible for negotiations with relatives of victims for ransom,” among others.

Buba, however, urged the citizens to support the troops to win the war against insecurity in the country.

Gunmen abduct Babcock varsity worker in Ogun

Some unknown gunmen on Thursday abducted a widow and an assistant Chief Nursing Officer with the Babcock University Teaching Hospital, Ilisan Remo, Mrs Elizabeth Uruakpa.

Uruakpa, 66, was said to be coming from the evening church service when the gunmen who had laid ambush swooped on her at the entrance of her house behind the new Ilisan market.

The incident reportedly made the neighbourhood panic as many residents and shop owners quickly shut their doors to avoid being unaware.

A resident of the area who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said, “The woman was coming back from the church in the evening around 7 pm when the gunmen abducted her. I know her very well, she’s a senior nursing staff with Babcock University Teaching Hospital and a member of the Winners’ Chapel.

“They dragged her down from her vehicle, put her in their red Toyota car and sped away. It was really like thunder lightning, and such a thing had never happened before in our neighbourhood. It is so strange and scary.”

The university’s Director of Communication and Marketing, Dr Joshua Suleiman, confirmed the worrisome development to our correspondent on Friday.

He said. “I heard about it last night. It is on one of the university’s platforms but I don’t have a comprehensive report about it. Someone is already working on getting more information about this and as soon as it is ready, I will get across to you. ”

Efforts to get the reaction of the spokesperson, Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, were futile as calls put to her mobile number were unreachable and messages sent to her lines were yet to be replied to as of the time of filing this report

Police arrest 11 suspected kidnappers in Kaduna, recover guns, ammunition

The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested 11 suspected kidnappers and recovered a cache of arms and a large sum of money during operations across the state.

In a statement on Thursday, the command’s spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mansir Hassan, said the arrests were linked to the kidnapping of a district head on 14 August 2024, who was released two days later.

Hassan added that police operatives, working in collaboration with local hunters, raided three villages in the Lere Local Government Area, resulting in the arrest of five suspects and the recovery of a fabricated single-barrel gun, a vehicle, a motorcycle, and several mobile phones.

In a separate operation, six additional suspects were arrested at a motor park, leading to the recovery of four fabricated AK-47 rifles, two English pistols, two pump-action guns, and a significant sum of money.

The police also apprehended a suspected bandit at a hotel in the Tafa area of Kagarko Local Government. The suspect confessed to involvement in cattle rustling and kidnapping.

The state Commissioner of Police, Audu Dabigi, commended the operatives for their bravery and urged the public to continue cooperating with the police to rid the state of criminals.

Hassan described the arrests and recoveries as a major milestone in the ongoing fight against kidnapping and banditry, which have plagued Kaduna State in recent times.

The statement read: “In connection with the kidnapping of a district head on 14 August 2024, who was released on 16 August 2024, police operatives in Saminaka, in collaboration with local hunters, raided three villages in Lere Local Government Area, namely Maraban Wasa, Gurzan Hakimi Mariri, and Abugan Kurama.

“Five suspects were arrested: Abdulhamid Abubakar (alias Bala, 30), Danjuma Luka (alias Uba, 25), Ayuba Simon (50), and Idi Saleh (57). Exhibits recovered included a fabricated single-barrel gun, a green Golf car, a Bajaj motorcycle, and eight mobile phones.

“On 2 September 2024, at about 9:00 PM, police operatives acting on credible intelligence laid an ambush at a motor park, leading to the recovery of four fabricated AK-47 rifles hidden within a consignment.

“Six suspects were arrested the following morning at about 5:10 AM: Lawal Murtala, Isa Kabiru, Auwal Surajo, Kamala Lawal, Umar Adamu, and Kabiru Liman. Recovered items included four fabricated AK-47 rifles, two English pistols, two pump-action guns, 24 cartridges, 29 rounds of live ammunition of various calibres, assorted charms, a walkie-talkie, an axe, and ₦908,600 in cash.

“On 3 September 2024, at about 10:00 PM, police received credible information about a suspected bandit staying at a hotel in the Tafa area of Kagarko Local Government. A patrol team arrested Yahaya Yusuf, a 41-year-old male from Kabo Village, Gurara Local Government Area, Niger State. He confessed to involvement in cattle rustling and kidnapping in Niger and Kaduna states. A Tecno mobile phone was recovered from him.”

The Commissioner of Police called on the public to continue cooperating with the police and assured that efforts to combat criminal activities in the state would be intensified.

Two killed in gunmen invasion of Rivers community

Two residents of Briun community in Bou-Ko kingdom in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State were shot dead following a night invasion by gunmen on Tuesday night.

According to Metro gathered that the incident occurred at about 8 p.m. when many residents of the area were already indoors and the attack shattered the serenity of the community.

Many residents who heard the sound of the gunshot remained indoors while some fled the community upon the discovery that two people had been killed, even as they wondered about the aim of the assailants.

Speaking on the incident, a resident of the area and Chairman, Board of Trustees, Ken Saro-Wiwa Surveillance Group, Bright Nwiyorde, called for a thorough investigation to ensure the perpetrators faced the law.

While calling for improved security in the area to prevent a recurrence of the dastardly act, Nwiyode called on the state government and relevant security agencies to come to the aid of the community and help fish out the killers.

According to him, “In Bou-ko kingdom, we heard that gunmen shot two people in Briun community at night.

“We don’t know the people and that is why we are calling on the government, the Commissioner of Police, the Khana Local Government Area chairman and the security at the local government level to come and investigate the matter and bring them to book.

“At the same time, as a security person, I’m also doing my investigation to help the government get to the root of the matter.”

When contacted, the spokesperson for the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said she had yet to receive a report of the incident but promised to find out from the Divisional Police Officer of the area and get back to our correspondent.

Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police, had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report on Thursday evening.

A suspect was arrested after two vehicles travelling along the Ife/Osu Highway was attacked by armed robbers, who shot a driver and raped a female passenger.

A passenger in one of the two vehicles involved, who spoke to According to Metro on Thursday on the condition of anonymity for security reasons, said the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday between Ife and Osu communities in Osun State.

According to him, the robbers numbering about eight had stopped the commercial bus coming from Lagos and a private car, ordered the passengers to disembark and collected various sums of money from them.

“The robbers attacked two vehicles. A bus and one private car. I was traveling on the bus. Both vehicles were coming from Lagos. We were out of Ife but yet to reach the Osu community when our vehicles were stopped by the robbers. They were about eight in number and they carried guns.

“The driver of the bus was shot, but he didn’t die. He was injured. One of the passengers in the car, a woman was raped. They collected the money we had and our ATM cards. They made us transfer various amounts into their account. They later handed our cards to one of the gang members.

“But some passengers fled into the bush while all that was going on. They told us some people they saw wandering in the area that said robbers were operating nearby and security men were mobilised to the area.”

A few minutes after the robbers left, the source said he saw policemen, vigilante members and some men wearing the uniform of Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service, arriving and began to comb the area. According to him, they arrested one of the robbers who was taken away.

When contacted, the Osun State acting Police Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Giwa-Alade, said a suspect had been arrested in connection with the crime.

“The incident happened. I got a briefing about it not long ago and we were able to apprehend one suspect. He is helping our investigation,” Giwa-Alade said.

Rivers commuters groan over fuel price hike

Residents in Port Harcourt and its environs in Rivers State are expressing frustration over the recent hike in the price of Premium Motor Spirit, otherwise known as fuel, which has led to an increase in fares.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s announcement of a pump price increase on Tuesday amidst a growing fuel scarcity in the country has sparked widespread discontent, with private car owners, commercial drivers, and commuters all sharing their plights in separate interviews with our correspondents.

A private car owner who runs a retail beverage business, who asked to remain anonymous, said, “To be very honest with you, the truth is always the truth, everybody knows what is happening in Nigeria right now, especially the economic situation. It’s affecting not only me but also everybody. What I bought from NTA Road for one litre is N1,300, which is not right. So, I think what we should do is number one, we make sure our refineries start working, because I think our economy is the fuel. If the price of fuel is coming down, definitely every other thing will come down.”

Another respondent who identified himself as Azubuike, a commercial tricycle (Keke) driver, said, “I bought N1,300 per litre and the fuel is not even up to that litre, the reduction and the price increase. So, it affects me a lot that I can’t even feed myself well. Even to pay my house rent, a very small amount but I can’t even pay that amount. Now, I’m a Keke driver, and even the passengers can’t even afford the money that we are telling them to pay. So we don’t know where to start and where to stop.

“I drive from Jorax filling station along NTA Road to that Mobile junction, on East-West Road that leads to Rumuokoro Roundabout . I load from there to that Mobile junction N300, sometimes N250 depending on the way they (passengers) beg me. Before, we charged N150, N200, N100, depending on the distance but the addition now is just N100. We are supposed to take up to N400, N500 but we are sympathising with ourselves.”

Also speaking, Anthony, a commuter who owns an auto repair shop, decried the situation saying, “Without being told, you see the situation of things, everywhere is very dry. See, I’m a mechanic, since morning, I haven’t even worked anything because of the fuel crisis. Since this fuel scarcity started, I know how I have been managing myself. I pay transport N1,000 every day to come to the shop and sit down without doing anything. It’s affecting me seriously.

“I stay at Choba, and pay N500 to my workshop at the NTA Road and N500 back. That’s N1,000 every day. Before this fuel crisis, I used to pay N150, to and fro, N300 but now it’s N1,000, you can check the difference, very much difference.”

On her part, a resident who identified herself as Gift, lamented how the hike had affected her, as she berated the government for its seeming nonchalance towards the plight of the people.

She said, “It has not been easy with the people. Like today, I wanted to go to Rumuola. I was supposed to pay N300 but they are saying N600 from NTA to Rumuola. I didn’t go because I couldn’t afford to go there and come back again with N600. I don’t have that kind of money. I have to stay back.

“The other day, I went to the market. Before we were paying N1,500 but now they said N3,000 to Mbiama market, but I didn’t go because I considered how much I would pay when I carry a load. I considered the amount in my pocket, but I didn’t go. So, the thing is affecting everybody. It has not been easy with everybody.”

PSP officials condemn members arrest over land dispute

Some officials of the Private Sector Partnership under the Lagos State Waste Management Authority have accused police officers at the Area M Command in Idimu of unlawfully arresting and detaining three of their members on Thursday in connection with a longstanding land dispute.

According to Metro gathered from one of the officials, who spoke for the aggrieved members, Suleiman Jamiu, that their members were being harassed and mistreated by suspected land grabbers who allegedly forced them off a property allocated to them by the state government.

Jamiu said, “We are officials of the PSP, and the land was allocated to us by the state government. We have all the necessary documentation. We had a structure where we parked our refuse collection trucks near Powerline. Suddenly, a hotel was built on the structure, and later, land grabbers arrived and forced us out.”

“We found out they were the ones who sold the land and forced us out. Now, we have nowhere to park except outside. We’ve been pleading with them for over 20 years. Before we could obtain a court injunction, they started building a fence to divide the land.

“We filed a petition with the police when the injunction was issued, but nothing came out of it. Four days ago, they arrested two of our men, claiming we were obstructing traffic.

“They forced us to sign an undertaking to remove all the trucks within 24 hours, which we complied with, except for one truck that had an engine problem. They invited us today (Thursday) to give a statement, which we did, but then they detained our men and said they had a plan to charge them in court.”

When our correspondent reached out to the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Thursday, he explained that the officers were responding to a complaint from the local council, which alleged that the operators’ activities in the area were causing obstruction and pollution.

He said, “It is not about land-grabbing. The local government area wrote to the police complaining of how the operators were obstructing traffic and leaving waste in their vehicles, thereby causing air pollution for residents around.

“The operators were approached but they remained adamant. The police had to step in.”

Doctor’s car kills one in Ogun hospital crash

An Ogun State-based doctor reportedly killed one person when his vehicle rammed into the Mowe Health Centre in the Mowe area of the state on Tuesday.

A police source privy to the incident but not authorised to speak with the media told According to Metro on Thursday that the incident occurred when the doctor was driving into the hospital premises.

The source noted that the doctor had lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the vehicle of the hospital killing one and injuring two persons.

The source said, “An accident occurred at the Mowe hospital. A doctor has always been parking in the Mowe Health Centre but on this particular day, he lost control and rammed into the hospital’s fence. One person died while two others were injured.”

Confirming the incident to our correspondent in a telephone conversation on Thursday, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, disclosed that the deceased body was deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital.

She added that an investigation was ongoing on the matter.

“The incident involved a Toyota Highlander Jeep with registration number APP 422 GJ, driven by a doctor.

“The driver, who had been parking at the health centre premises despite not being a staff member, was attempting to enter the health centre when he lost control of his vehicle, hitting the hospital wall and causing injuries to two persons. Unfortunately, a three-year-old named Ejikey Israel died at the scene.

“Police officers visited the accident site, the vehicle was taken to the station for safety, the deceased’s body was sent to the OOUTH for autopsy, and the injured individuals were taken for treatment. An investigation into the incident is ongoing,” Odutola concluded.

According to Metro reported on August 18 that a driver of an unregistered Honda Accord vehicle killed one person after ramming into a motorcycle along the Oru-Ijebu Igbo road in the Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The accident, according to a statement by the spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, occurred at about 8 pm.

Akinbiyi noted that three persons were involved in the accident which left two persons injured and one person dead.

The TRACE spokesperson stated that the accident was caused by the reckless driving by the driver of the Honda Accord car.
