Man arrested for sexually assaulting minor in Jigawa

0

A bizarre incident happened on August 29, 2024, at the premises of Dutse Divisional Police Headquarters, Jigawa State, when a 32-year-man, identified as Bashir Umar, lured an eight-year-old girl into a restroom, where he tortured and sexually assaulted her.

The spokesman of the Jigawa Police Command, DSP Lawan Adam, who confirmed the incident via a statement on Sunday morning, disclosed that Umar is from Galamawa town, Dutse Local Government Area of the state.

Adam noted that the suspect subjected the girl to unimaginable torture before sexually assaulting her in most heartless circumstances.

The police spokesman stated that Umar inserted scissors and a spoon into the innocent girl’s private parts.

He added that the suspect injected some undisclosed substance into the private part of the girl, leaving her unconscious and bleeding profusely.

“Thereafter, the perpetrator exploited the girl’s vulnerability, offering her N150 and threatening to harm her and her parents if she disclosed the sexual abuse to anyone,” he said.

Adam said Umar continued to terrorize and sexually assault the helpless girl using the same technique and silencing her with threats whenever he encountered her on her way to school.

He added, “Following the sexual trauma, the victim suffered severe physical consequences, including urinary and stool-related complications.

“The survivor is currently at Rashid Shekoni Teaching Hospital, Dutse, where she was admitted and receiving treatment.

“The suspect was arrested and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Dutse, for discreet investigation.”

APC withdraws from Anambra LG poll, heads to court over irregularities

0

The All Progressives Congress in Anambra State has withdrawn from the upcoming local government elections, scheduled for 28th September 2024, citing concerns over irregularities.

The party announced this on Saturday, adding that it had decided to take legal action, challenging the election process in court.

According to the party, the decision followed alleged violations of due process, which they believe undermines the credibility of the poll.

The APC further explained that participating in the LG election would amount to “legalising illegality,” insisting that the constitution of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) and the announcement of the election date did not follow due process as stipulated by the Electoral Act 2022.

The motion to boycott the election was moved by APC stakeholders, including Donatus Emecheta, and seconded by Ikunwata Obadike, during the party’s stakeholders’ meeting held at the state headquarters in Awka on Saturday.

Addressing party members during the meeting, the State Chairman of the APC, Chief Basil Ejidike, noted that the APC, under his leadership, would not participate in the election because ANSIEC and the state governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, were not prepared to conduct the exercise in a free, fair, and credible manner.

Ejidike stated, “How can a great party like APC be involved in an election where political parties are not given enough time to conduct primaries to elect their candidates, no campaign rallies, no selling of forms in accordance with the Electoral Act?”

He also claimed that Soludo had already set up a tribunal at the Anambra State High Court in Awka for political parties wishing to challenge the election’s outcome, suggesting that the governor was not transparently preparing to establish an accountable local government system.

“We are already in court to challenge the process because the APC, being the major opposition party in Anambra State, must try as much as possible to lead by example. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party have also gone to court to challenge the irregularities, and we applaud them.”

Ejidike further urged party members to remain focused, as the APC would soon begin a tour of the 21 local government areas in preparation for the 2025 governorship election in the state.

Also speaking, the APC Legal Adviser, Chukwunoso Chinweuba, said the party had already filed a case in the High Court, challenging the entire local government election process.

Chinweuba argued that the electoral process had been compromised by irregularities, citing Section 23(1) of the ANSIEC Law 2024, which provides for a 30-day notice period for the election, as inconsistent with Section 103(3) of the Electoral Act 2022, which requires a 150-day notice period.

A minute’s silence was observed during the meeting in honour of the late Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

It is worth noting that over 10 years have passed since the last local government elections were held in Anambra State, the most recent taking place in 2014.

Since then, all 21 local government areas in the state have been managed by caretaker transition committee chairmen appointed by the governor every three months.

Three die in Lagos multiple accidents

0

No fewer than three people lost their lives, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries, in multiple accidents along the Maryland axis of Lagos State in the early hours of Sunday.

The Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Nosa Okunbor, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Okunbor explained that the first accident occurred when a diesel-laden tanker experienced brake failure and rammed into several vehicles, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to an unspecified number of others.

He added that upon the LASEMA team’s arrival at the scene around 1 am, they discovered another crash involving a containerised truck that had collided with a MACK truck, leaving the container truck driver with a leg injury.

He recounted, “Upon the arrival of the LASEMA Response Teams at the scene of the incident at 0113hrs, the LRT encountered a multiple-vehicle accident involving an oil tanker, registration number unknown, fully laden with diesel.

The tanker reportedly suffered a mechanical failure (brake failure) while in motion, lost control, and crashed into several cars, resulting in numerous casualties.

“The second accident involved an articulated truck, registration number unknown, carrying a fully loaded 40-foot container, which reportedly collided with a MACK truck, also unregistered, loaded with refill industrial bottles. The crash was attributed to reckless driving and speeding.

“Sadly, three fatalities were reported in the multiple accidents, with the bodies removed before the LRTs arrived. An unspecified number of people were critically injured and had already been taken to various hospitals by the time the LRTs reached the scene.”

Okunbor identified the vehicles involved in the accidents as two Volkswagen Vanagon commercial buses, one Mitsubishi Space Bus, two mini-buses (Korope), and one Honda car.

He added that emergency responders were able to secure the area and implement critical safety and traffic control measures, which led to the temporary closure of the road and bridge.

The LASEMA spokesperson continued, “Recovery efforts for the accident trucks and other vehicles began immediately upon the arrival of equipment at the scene.

“The two LASEMA Response Teams, along with other responders, worked tirelessly to recover all vehicles involved in the road accident and to alleviate the traffic gridlock caused by the incident.”
Emergency responders at the scene included the LASEMA team, the police, and operatives from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

PDP is dead, says Kwankwaso

0

The 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has said the Peoples Democratic Party is dead in the country.

Speaking on Saturday during the inauguration of a renovated party office in Katsina State, Kwankwaso said he and his followers left the PDP because “it is dead”.

“I wish to remind you that PDP is dead because we left the party. Since they have gone out of the line, we decided to check out,” he said.

Kwankwaso also said he would win the 2027 presidential election, adding that the NNPP is ready to take over the presidency and more than the states.

The former Governor of Kano State said Nigerians should not be deceived by gifts or money during the next general election.

Also speaking, Katsina NNPP chairman, Armaya’u Abdulkadir, said the party in the state is doing everything possible to enlighten the electorate on the party’s new logo.

Abdulkadir said the new logo symbolises education for all, which is the main focus area of the Kwankwasiyya leader.

“There is the need for the party to embark on grassroots sensitisation to inform the members on the importance of the new logo,” he said.

Nine die in Vietnam landslide

0

Super Typhoon Yagi ripped roofs off buildings, sank boats and triggered landslides in Vietnam, leaving nine people dead as of Sunday, after tearing through southern China and the Philippines.

A family of four was killed in a landslide in the mountainous Hoa Binh province of northern Vietnam early Sunday morning, according to state media.

The landslide happened around midnight, after several hours of heavy rain brought by Yagi, when a hillside gave way and collapsed onto a house, VNExpress said, citing local authorities.

The home’s 51-year-old owner escaped but his wife, daughter and two grandchildren were buried, their bodies recovered soon after.

Yagi, which has devastated infrastructure and uprooted trees, made landfall in northern Vietnam on Saturday, packing winds exceeding 149 kilometres (92 miles) per hour.

Four people were killed Saturday as roofing flew through the air, disaster management authorities said.

A man in Hai Duong province was killed Friday when heavy winds brought down a tree.

Several areas of the port city of Hai Phong were under half a metre (1.6 feet) of flood waters on Sunday, and electricity was out, with power lines and electric poles damaged, according to AFP journalists.

At Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site about 70 kilometres up the coast from the city, fishermen were in shock as they examined the damage Sunday morning.

At least 23 boats were seriously damaged or sunk at the Hai Au boat lock on Tuan Chau island, according to local residents.

Rooftops of buildings were blown off and motorbikes were left toppled over in piles of building rubble and glass, AFP journalists observed.

Pham Van Thanh, 51, a crew member of a tourist boat, said all the vessel’s crew remained on board since Friday to prevent it from sinking.

“The wind was pushing from our back, with so much pressure that no boat could stand,” he told AFP.

“Then the first one sank. Then one after another.

“I have been a sailor for more than 20 years and have never experienced such a strong and violent typhoon,” he said.

Before hitting Vietnam, Yagi tore through southern China and the Philippines, killing at least 24 people and injuring dozens of others.

Typhoons in the region are now forming closer to the coast, intensifying more rapidly, and staying over land for longer due to climate change, according to a study published in July.

Does Nigeria have the second-highest rate of food insecurity on Earth?

0

Claim: In an interview with selected journalists on the sidelines of the 2024 NutriVision Dialogue in Abuja, Bill Gates claimed that Nigeria has the second-highest rate of food insecurity in the world and that climate change has been accelerating the problem.

He explained that food insecurity is why the country receives the largest share of intervention funds allocated by his foundation in Africa.

He stated, “Nigeria today has the second-highest rate of food insecurity on Earth, and climate change is only accelerating the problem. Arable land has disappeared, pests have wiped out harvests, and prices for staple foods have soared. Climate-related losses on many African farms are more than double those seen globally.

“The poorest farmers are the hardest hit, having to cope with more droughts, pests, and diseases, which in turn exacerbate food shortages and push up food prices. We’ve been working with the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation to better understand the climate-induced hunger crisis.”

Findings:

William Henry Gates, popularly known as Bill Gates, is an American business magnate and co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He also co-founded the software company, Microsoft, and is said to be worth $137bn, according to Forbes (2024).

The Microsoft boss arrived in Nigeria on Monday as part of a broader push by the foundation to support development initiatives across Africa.

He attended the National Economic Council meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Council Chambers of the State House, on Wednesday.

According to a statement by the foundation, the visit aimed to bolster efforts in key sectors such as health, agriculture, and nutrition.

Science Direct defines food insecurity as the persistent concern about access to sufficient and affordable food at all times, which can lead to an increase in food poverty and malnutrition in communities with low standards of living.

The 2024 Global Report on Food Crises, published recently by the Food Security Information Network, defines a food crisis as a situation where acute food insecurity requires urgent action to protect and save lives and livelihoods at local or national levels, exceeding the local resources and capacities to respond.

According to the report, acute food insecurity refers to a situation where populations face food deprivation that threatens their lives or livelihoods, regardless of the causes, context, or duration.

The GRFC is the reference document for a comprehensive analysis of global, regional, and country-level acute food insecurity.

It is a collaborative report put together by 16 partners, including the European Union, the International Food Policy Research Institute, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Global Food Security Cluster, and the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, among others.

The report, which aims to inform humanitarian and development action by providing independent, consensus-based evidence and analysis, focuses on acute food insecurity in countries experiencing food crises. It is part of an annual suite of products, including regional reports.

Over 281.6 million people across 59 countries face acute food insecurity globally, says the GRFC, and about 158 million of them reside in Africa.

The report revealed that 24.9 million people are affected by high food insecurity in Nigeria, and the country ranks second among the 59 countries listed, coming behind only the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has 25.8 million food-insecure people.

The report identified the three major drivers of food insecurity worldwide as – conflict/insecurity, extreme weather, and economic shocks.

In July, the United Nations predicted that 82 million Nigerians, about 64 per cent of the country’s population, may go hungry by 2030, urging the government to tackle climate change, pest infestations, and other threats to agricultural productivity.

The prediction comes in the wake of a persistent hike in food prices in the country. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria’s food inflation rate hit a record high of 40.66 per cent in May 2024, surpassing the previous month’s 40.53 per cent increase.

The surge represents the largest year-on-year increase in food prices since records began in 1996.

Speaking at the launch of CropWatch in Abuja in July, the Resident Humanitarian Coordinator of the FAO, represented by one of the UN officials, Taofiq Braimoh, said, “The government of Nigeria, in collaboration with others, conducts an annual food security survey. This year’s results are alarming: approximately 22 million Nigerians will face food insecurity in 2023, and around 80-82 million are at risk of severe food insecurity by 2030.

“Nigeria, like many countries, grapples with food insecurity, climate change, unreliable water patterns, pest infestations, and other threats to agricultural productivity. As an agrarian society, the success of our farms directly impacts food availability for our population. Leveraging technology is crucial to strengthening our agriculture sector and ensuring food security.”

According to the National Emergency Management Agency, widespread flooding during the 2022 rainy season damaged more than 676,000 hectares of farmland, diminishing harvests and increasing the risk of food insecurity for families across the country.

In an interview with Sunday According, agricultural economist, Tobi Awolope, from the Centre for Agricultural Development and Sustainable Environment at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, said it is possible that Nigeria has risen to second on the global food insecurity chart due to its widespread climate change and insecurity-induced food crisis.

She said, “In a report published some years back, Nigeria was ranked 10th in the world. However, due to climate change issues, which have caused a hike in food prices, the country has apparently climbed up the ladder among the countries battling food insecurity.

“Even the four pillars of food security (food availability, utilisation, accessibility, and stability) are currently defaulting in the country. That’s partly due to supply chain bottlenecks and inflation, which have caused an increase in the price of food items. So, the situation in Nigeria has worsened.

“When it comes to the effect of climate change, we are highly vulnerable because of our low adaptive capacity. In terms of irrigation, our farmers are not well-equipped, and most of them cannot access feeds because they are very expensive. I believe these are some of the factors that have increased the rate of food insecurity in Nigeria. So, I think the country has likely risen to second on the global food insecurity chart.”

Four vehicles burnt, many injured as fuel tanker explodes on Ibadan-Ife road

0

About four vehicles were, on Saturday, burnt while some people sustained varying degrees of injuries as petrol loaded trucks caught fire on Ibadan-Ife expressway.

The affected vehicles, according to the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services, Yemi Akinyinka, were the petrol-loaded truck, an 18-passenger bus, another middle-size truck, and a Micra taxi.

Akinyinka told The According to that the accident happened at Circular Road Junction in the Egbeda Local Government Area of the state, causing a traffic gridlock on the road.

Motorists and commuters were stranded for several hours as the Federal Fire Service in conjunction with security agencies tried to put the situation under control.

Eyewitnesses said the truck lost control while trying to ascend the hill.

“A call was placed through the state Fire Services in order to save the situation.”

As of press time, it could not be confirmed whether lives were lost to the incident.

Akinyinka, who confirmed the incident, said, “Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire was caused by some residents trying to use the leakage opportunities for their beneficiary’s use.

“Four trucks completely destroyed, one petroleum truck, 18 passengers, one small truck, and one micra were all affected. Some people suffered minor injuries,” he confirmed.

13 killed, dozens injured in Ivory Coast road crash

0

Thirteen people have been killed and 45 injured in a road accident in northern Ivory Coast, after a tanker truck crashed into a bus, rescuers and local media said Saturday.

A bus carrying passengers and a petrol-filled truck on the opposite lane collided on Friday where the road’s width had been narrowed by a freight truck parked without indicators, said Police Secours, a platform monitoring deadly accidents in the country.

The vehicles crashed around 2300 GMT on the highway between Bouake and Korhogo, two large cities in northern Ivory Coast.

“The collision between the bus and the tanker set off a fire of terrifying intensity,” leaving “13 bodies charred” by the flames, Police Secours wrote.

The Ivorian Press Agency (AIP) confirmed the toll which included 19 injured children rushed to hospitals in the nearby cities of Katiola and Niakara.

Deadly accidents are frequent in the Ivory Coast due to many roads and cars in poor condition and reckless driving.

The country in 2023 introduced a point-based driver’s licence granting each driver a total of 12 points that can be gradually taken away depending on the violation.

Ivorian authorities have also set up cameras on the country’s main roads to fine offenders.

Between 1,000 and 1,500 people are killed every year in road accidents in the Ivory Coast, according to the transport ministry.
