Man, 32, arrested in Jigawa for sexually assaulting minor

A bizarre incident happened on August 29, 2024, at the premises of the Dutse Divisional Police Headquarters, Jigawa State, when a 32-year-man, identified as Bashir Umar, allegedly lured an eight-year-old girl into a restroom, where he tortured and sexually assaulted her.

The spokesman for the Jigawa Police Command, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, who confirmed the bizarre incident via  a press statement on Sunday morning disclosed that Umar is from Galamawa town, Dutse LGA.

Shiisu noted that the man subjected the child to unimaginable torture before sexually assaulting her in most heartless circumstances.

He said the alleged rapist inserted scissors and a spoon into the girl’s vagina and anus.

He also said to have injected a syringe of some undisclosed substance into the child’s private parts, leaving her unconscious and bleeding profusely.

“Thereafter, the perpetrator exploited the girl’s vulnerability, offering her N150 and threatening to harm her and her parents if she disclosed the sexual abuse to anyone,” Shiisu said.

He was said to have continued to terrorise and sexually assault the helpless girl using the same technique and silencing her with threats whenever he encountered her on her way to school.

Following the sexual trauma, the PPRO noted that the victim suffered severe physical consequences, including urinary and stool-related complications.

During an interrogation, according to the PPRO, the girl confessed to their protracted extramarital affairs with the suspect.

Furthermore, Shiisu disclosed, “The survivor is currently at the Rashid Shekoni Teaching Hospital, Dutse, where she was admitted and receiving treatment.

“The suspect was arrested and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Dutse for a discreet investigation.”

Police probe death of Kwara poly student

The Kwara State Police Command has begun an investigation into the death of a 21-year-old Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, who was allegedly killed during a fuel hike protest by the students on Wednesday.

Qoyum, a National Diploma 2 student of Electrical/Electronics Engineering at the institution, was allegedly killed by the police in a mysterious circumstance in the Fate area, Ilorin.

The state police command in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, on Sunday, said that it sympathised with the family of the late Qoyum.

“The Kwara State Police Command extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola during this painful and trying time. We deeply sympathise with the family, friends, and all those affected by this unfortunate event which occurred on September 4, 2024. The loss of a loved one, especially in such circumstances, is a burden that no family should have to bear alone. Our thoughts are with you, and we pray for strength and comfort for everyone involved. The Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, assures the family that we stand with them in this difficult moment and are committed to seeking justice on behalf of the deceased.

“Following the incident, a thorough investigation has already commenced and actors and witnesses have been identified. The Kwara State Police Command is fully dedicated to uncovering the facts of the matter and ensuring that those responsible, are brought to justice in accordance with the law. We are working with care and diligence, as we understand the importance of providing clear answers to the family and community.

“Our commitment to transparency in this investigation is unwavering, and we pledge to conduct the process with the utmost integrity, leaving no room for doubt or compromise.”

He appealed to the public, the student’s community and those directly impacted, to remain calm and allow the law to take its rightful course.

“While emotions may be high, we urge everyone to avoid actions that could hinder the investigation or disrupt public order. The Kwara State Police Command is mindful of its duty to serve and protect and we promise to keep the public informed of any new developments as the investigation progresses. The students of the polytechnic, led by the Students’ Union President, Olalekan Isola, and the National President of the National Association of Kwara State Students, Abdulwahab Arewa, said in a statement on Thursday that they marched to the state police command’s headquarters in Ilorin to demand justice for the alleged killing of a fellow student, Abdulqoyyum, a National Diploma student of Electrical/Electronics Engineering of the institution.

A statement by the student union expressed a deep sense of responsibility over the alleged unfortunate incident involving the student and members of the police force.

“Earlier today (Thursday), we held an extensive meeting with relevant police authorities lasting over three hours. Our discussions were productive and we are working closely with the institution’s management and other key stakeholders to investigate the matter thoroughly”, the statement said.

In his reaction, the Rector of the institution, Abdul-Jimoh Muhammed, expressed sadness over the demise of the student.

“The circumstances around the young and promising student’s death are still dicey as there were many unconfirmed stories and narratives around it.

“The school management is committed to ensuring that justice is served as appropriate based on the final reports of the matter,” he said in a statement.

The rector appreciated the students for being calm and not taking the law into their own hands stressing that as the investigation unfolded, the polytechnic community remained resolute in its demand for accountability and justice for Abdulqoyyum.

Europe-bound cocaine consignments intercepted in sanitary pads

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have intercepted consignments of cocaine and pharmaceutical opioids concealed in ladies’ sanitary pads and hair treatment cream containers heading to the United Kingdom, Ireland and Cyprus at three courier companies in Lagos.

In a statement on Sunday by the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, he said in one of the companies, not less than 30 parcels of cocaine, weighing 1.1 kilograms, concealed in hair cream containers, were recovered by the NDLEA officers during the examination of cargoes going to Ireland on September 3, 2024.

“Another consignment of 24 parcels of cocaine, weighing 862 grams, also hidden in hair cream containers meant for delivery in the UK was equally intercepted at the same company on September 6.

“In the same vein, a total of 525 pills of tramadol 225mg and ecstasy (MDMA) concealed in ladies’ sanitary pads going to Cyprus were seized at another courier firm in Lagos by the NDLEA on September 3 while a shipment of 200 ampoules of promethazine injection and pentazocine injection hidden in food items and herbs heading to London, UK, was also seized by operatives on Wednesday, September 4,” Babafemi added.

He noted that operators of the agency had intercepted another consignment of tramadol 225mg buried in granulated melon that came from Cameroon to South Africa on September 6.

At the Port Harcourt International Airport, Babafemi said no fewer than 550,000 pills of tramadol were intercepted on September 2 during a joint examination of a cargo that came from Delhi, India, with men of the Nigerian Customs Service.

“A suspect was already arrested in connection with the seizure,” he added.

In Ekiti State, Babafemi said the NDLEA supported by men of the Nigerian Army on  September 3 stormed three camps inside the Ise-Ekiti forest reserve, in the Ise/Orun Local Government Area where over 100,000 kilograms of cannabis spread across 51 hectares of farmland were destroyed.

He added, “The affected settlements include: Aba Saalaja with 23 hectares; Aba Paanu with 12 hectares and Aba Arogunmatidi with 16 hectares, all within the Ise-Ekiti forest reserve.”

Babafemi also said a total of eight suspects were arrested with different illicit drugs on September 6 in Kaduna State.

He said, “Two suspects: Bala Musa, 42, and Danladi Muhammad, 44, were arrested on Friday, September 6, along the Toro-Jos Road, Kaduna with 305kg cannabis concealed in a false compartment of a J5 boxer bus marked YLA 682 XM, while another suspect, Aminu Ayuba, 24, was arrested in possession of 18 kilograms of same substance at Makarfi town.

“Two others: Umar Usman, 40, and Zubairu Kabiru, 45, were arrested along the Zaria- Kaduna Highway in possession of 1,300 tablets of tramadol, all the same day.” Babafemi also said arrests were made in Jigawa and Kogi states.

He said, “In Jigawa State, Uzairu Ya’u, 30, was nabbed with 32.6kg of cannabis on Thursday, September 5, at Koran Shehu, while operatives in Kogi on Wednesday, September 4, intercepted 77,300 pills of tramadol, diazepam and exol-5 as well as 1,230 bottles of codeine in a commercial bus driven by Attai Okolo, 68, along the Aloma-Ejule Road, Ofu LGA, Kogi State. Another suspect, Mohammed Idris, 56, was nabbed along the Okene-Lokoja-Abuja Expressway on Tuesday, September 3, with 42.400kg of cannabis coming from Lagos en route to Kano.”

“While the NDLEA operatives in Borno State arrested Idris Muhammad, 40, at the Ramat area of Maiduguri on Thursday, September 5, with 13,100 pills of tramadol, their counterparts in Kano on Wednesday, September 4, nabbed Hakilu Usman, 35, with 25.8kg cannabis and 3,000 pills of diazepam along the Kano–Daura Road.

“In Taraba State, no fewer than 87,790 pills of tramadol were recovered from Musa Adamu, 30, when he was arrested in Zing, while in Osun State, a raid of the home of a drug kingpin, Mayowa Abayomi Awe (a.k.a Bishop) in Ilesa on Wednesday, September 4, led to the seizure of 43 grams of crack cocaine, 23 grams of methamphetamine, 17.126kg cannabis and a locally made pistol,” the statement concluded.

Gunmen kill 20-year-old man in Lagos

A 20-year-old man was on Friday, shot dead by unidentified gunmen at Okokomaiko, in the Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The deceased was said to have been chased by the assailants who caught up with him and shot him multiple times.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the incident in a statement obtained by According to Metro on Sunday said it happened at about 9 pm, adding that the victim was shot in the head, stomach, and leg.

Hundeyin stated the police were alerted to the crime the same night as they promptly responded to the scene.

He said, “Information was received from concerned members of the public that at about 9 pm at Abeokuta Street, Okokomaiko, Ojo, Lagos, four unidentified gunmen were seen chasing a young man in the area that they shot him several times on the head, stomach and leg till he died.

“After committing the act, they abandoned the corpse and took to their heels while they escaped to an unknown destination. Immediately after receiving the information, the anti-crime team visited the scene.”

According to Hundeyin, the team of policemen upon reaching the spot, met a female adult who identified herself simply as Vivian and was also confirmed to be the mother of the deceased.

He added that the photograph of the deceased was taken on the spot noting that the corpse was evacuated and deposited at the Infectious Disease Hospital mortuary in the Yaba area of the state.

“Investigation is in progress and efforts are on towards tracing the fleeing suspects for possible arrest and prosecution while the case will be transferred for further and discreet investigation,” he added.

48 passengers, 50 cows killed in Niger tanker fire

Forty-eight persons confirmed dead in the petrol tanker explosion on Sunday were given a mass burial in the Agaie Local Government Area of Niger State.

According to Metro gathered that the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday when the petrol tanker had a head-on collision with a truck loaded with travellers and cattle from Wudil in Kano State.

The Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Abdullahi Baba-Arab, who gave the update, also confirmed that the 48 persons were burnt beyond recognition necessitating the mass burial in the local government.

According to him, following further search and rescue operations, 18 more bodies were recovered from the 30 bodies earlier reported.

“Following further search and rescue operation, my agency discovered 18 more bodies which were also burnt to death and all the dead have been given a mass burial,” he said.

Baba-Arab disclosed this in a statement where he asserted that the incident happened at about 12.30 am along Lapai-Agaie, 2km from the Dendo community in Agaie LGA.

He also said over 50 cattle were burnt, and a crane truck and a pickup van were caught up in the inferno.

The statement read, “NSEMA has received a report of a deadly tanker explosion that occurred on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at about 12.30 am along Lapai-Agaie, 2km from Dendo Community in Agaie LGA.

“The incident occurred when a petrol tanker loaded with PMS collided with a truck loaded with travellers and cattle from Wudil in Kano State heading to Lagos, two other vehicles, a crane truck and a pickup van, were also caught in the incident.

“Over 30 people are already confirmed dead, with over 50 cattle burnt. NSEMA’s Rapid Respond Team, in conjunction with the LGEMCs, is still on the scene of the incident conducting a search and rescue operation as more corpses are still trapped inside the trucks.”

Suspect arrested as kidnappers abduct two in Ogun farm

A  suspect has been arrested after some kidnappers abducted two male adults while inspecting farmland in the Ikutoke village in the Ode-Remo area of Remo North Local Government Area of Ogun State on Friday.

A police source, who was not authorised to speak to the media, told According to Metro on the condition of anonymity, on Sunday, that the victims, identified as Olajesu and Juwon, in the company with a surveyor and a young boy, had gone to inspect the boundary of a farm in the village before the incident happened.

One Gani Idowu was said to have invited them to the land for inspection, but upon the arrival of Juwon and Olajesu at the farm, Idowu excused himself and told his visitors that he was returning home.

The source added that as soon as Idowu left the farm, leaving his visitors who were still engaged on the farm, the kidnappers dashed out from a nearby bush and abducted Olajesu and Juwon.

The source narrated, “On 06/09/2024 around 1000HRS, Olajesu, Juwon, also known as Alapanla, and Kusimo, who is a surveyor, along with a young boy, travelled to Ikutoke village, where Ganiu Idowu intended to show them the boundary of a farm in the Ikutoke village near Ode-Remo.

“It was alleged that suddenly, Ganiu Idowu informed them that he was returning home while others were still engaged on the farm.

“Shortly after Ganiu Idowu departed, the kidnappers appeared and abducted both Olajesu and Juwon.”

When contacted, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident to our correspondent in a telephone conversation on Sunday.

Odutola noted that one suspect had been arrested in connection with the incident.

“Ganiu Idowu is suspected to have orchestrated the kidnap of Olajesu and Juwon in Ikutoke village in the Ode-Remo area. He has been arrested and is undergoing an investigation.

“The Commissioner of Police, Alamutu Abiodun, has vowed that there will be no room for men of the underworld in Ogun State,” Odutola said.

According to Metro reported last Thursday that some gunmen abducted an assistant Chief Nursing Officer with the Babcock University Teaching Hospital, Ilisan Remo, Mrs Elizabeth Uruakpa.

Uruakpa, 66, was said to be coming from the evening church service when the gunmen who had laid ambush swooped on her at the entrance of her house behind the new Ilisan market.

The incident reportedly made the neighbourhood panic as many residents and shop owners quickly shut their doors to avoid being caught unaware.

A resident of the area had told our correspondent that the victim was coming back from the church in the evening around 7 pm when the gunmen abducted her.

The Delta State Police Command has arrested one Emmanuel Umukoro, for allegedly killing and burning his mother, Mrs Fatima Umukoro, a school proprietress, in the Warri area of the state.

According to Metro, on Sunday, learnt that the tragic incident, which occurred in the late hours of Saturday night, has left the woman’s neighbours in a state of shock.

Some of the neighbors who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the scene as gruesome and horrific.

According to an eyewitness, who simply identified himself as Umoh, the gate of the Umukoro residence was left open around 10 pm, which was unusual. This prompted neighbours and passersby to check on the situation.

“When neighbours checked on the residence of the Umukoro late that night, they were shocked to discover fire coming from inside the house with the door left open. Upon entering the house, they found the lifeless body of Mrs. Umukoro, burnt beyond recognition.

“We saw her son, Emmanuel Umukoro, earlier driving out of the compound around 8:30 pm at a high speed in his mother’s car.”

The neighbours said that the suspicious movement of the son led to his apprehension by the police along the Sapele-Warri Road as he (son) attempted to escape to an unknown destination.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State, Bright Edafe, on Sunday, confirmed the incident.

He said, “The son is in police custody now but cannot say whether he’s the one who killed her until an investigation is concluded.”

Three killed, 17 injured in Lagos multiple crashes

No fewer than three persons lost their lives, while 17 others sustained varying degrees of injuries, in multiple accidents along the Maryland area of Lagos State in the early hours of Sunday.

The Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Nosa Okunbor, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Okunbor explained that the first accident occurred when a diesel-laden tanker experienced brake failure and rammed into several vehicles, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to an unspecified number of others.

He added that upon the LASEMA team’s arrival at the scene around 1 a.m., they discovered another crash involving a containerised truck that had collided with a MACK truck, leaving the container truck driver with a leg injury.

He recounted, “Upon the arrival of the LASEMA Response Teams at the scene of the incident at 0113hrs, the LRT encountered a multiple-vehicle accident involving an oil tanker, registration number unknown, fully laden with diesel.

“The tanker reportedly suffered a mechanical failure (brake failure) while in motion, lost control, and crashed into several cars, resulting in numerous casualties.

“The second accident involved an articulated truck, registration number unknown, carrying a fully loaded 40-foot container, which reportedly collided with a MACK truck, also unregistered, loaded with refill industrial bottles. The crash was attributed to reckless driving and speeding.

“Sadly, three fatalities were reported in the multiple accidents, with the bodies removed before the LRTs arrived. An unspecified number of people were critically injured and had already been taken to various hospitals by the time the LRTs reached the scene.”

Okunbor identified the vehicles involved in the accidents as two Volkswagen Vanagon commercial buses, one Mitsubishi Space Bus, two mini-buses (Korope), and one Honda car.

He added that emergency responders were able to secure the area and implement critical safety and traffic control measures, which led to the temporary closure of the road and bridge.

The LASEMA spokesperson continued, “Recovery efforts for the accident trucks and other vehicles began immediately upon the arrival of equipment at the scene.

“The two LASEMA Response Teams, along with other responders, worked tirelessly to recover all vehicles involved in the road accident and to alleviate the traffic gridlock caused by the incident.”

Reacting to the incident, the LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a swift recovery.

Bakare-Oki, who spoke through LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, noted that the agency would continue to ensure the safety of road users while confirming that 17 people were injured.

“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones affected by this tragic accident. We remain committed to ensuring the safety of all road users in Lagos State,” he stated.

Emergency responders at the scene included the LASEMA team, the police, and operatives from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and LASTMA.

A distraught father has cried out for help after his baby was severely injured on the first day at a daycare school in Ago Palace, Okota, Lagos state.

Transformer vandal electrocuted in Lagos

An unidentified man has been electrocuted while attempting to vandalise a transformer at a company situated on Awolowo Road in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State.

The incident was said to have occurred in the early hours of Sunday, September 1.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed this in a statement obtained by According to Online on Sunday said the deceased had climbed the gate beside the transformer when he got struck by the electric current, fell inside the compound and died on the spot.

Hundeyin said the incident was reported to the police by a security guard on duty at the company.

“At about 4 am, one security guard on duty at a company situated at Awolowo Road in Ikoyi came to the station and reported that while he was on duty, an unknown person climbed the gate by the side of PHCN transformer. In an attempt to vandalise same, he was electrocuted, fell inside the compound and died on the spot,” the statement partly read.

Hundeyin stated that a team of anti-crime patrol officers visited the scene and took photographs of the deceased.

“The PHCN office was contacted and the remains of the corpse were taken to the mortuary,” the statement added.
