20 aspirants fail drug tests, says NDLEA

0

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has disclosed that at least 20 aspirants in the forthcoming Kano State local government election have tested positive for multiple drugs.

This development, part of a crackdown on drug use among candidates, has raised concerns about the integrity of the upcoming elections.

The NDLEA commander in Kano, Abubakar Ahmad, confirmed to Daily Trust that the aspirants, all from the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party, tested positive for substances including opioids (codeine), THC (the active ingredient in cannabis), benzodiazepines, and nicotine.

“So far, 20 aspirants presented to us by the ruling party (NNPP) in the state have tested positive for multiple drugs, and the exercise is ongoing,” Ahmad stated.

While nicotine was detected in many cases, Ahmad added, “It is left for the electoral commission to decide if tobacco is a drug or not because it is something you find even in kola nut.”

No female aspirants have tested positive so far.

The drug tests are part of the screening process ahead of the NNPP’s submission of its candidate list to the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), which will verify all candidates before the October 26 election.

These elections will fill 44 chairmanship and 484 councillorship seats across Kano’s local governments.

Earlier, According Online reported that the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission had pledged to conduct drug tests for all candidates, with its chairman, Prof. Sani Malumfashi, making the announcement during a visit to the NDLEA headquarters.

In 2018, the state government approved compulsory drug test for political appointees, civil servants and students seeking admission into the tertiary institutions.

The Ogun State Police Command has launched a search for a self-identified soldier known simply as Michael, who allegedly stabbed a security guard, Samuel Adeyemi, in the Itele community of the Ado-Odo-Ota Local Government area of the state.

The spokesperson for the command, Omolola Odutola, told According to Metro on Tuesday that the incident occurred on Sunday while the victim was on duty at Ibuloko Street in Itele.

Michael, who claimed to be an operative of the Nigerian Army, reportedly approached the street gate and demanded that the guard open it for him and the other occupants of the vehicle he was in.

In an attempt to determine the true identity of the car’s occupants, our correspondent learnt that the fleeing suspects exited the vehicle and stabbed the victim in the head with an iron rod, severing the right side of his ear.

Odutola said, “The victim was on duty as a security guard in the community at around 12:45 a.m. on Sunday. The suspect, who claimed to be a soldier, approached the community with others and demanded that the victim open the gate for them to enter.

“As the security guard attempted to question them about their true identities, the suspect allegedly approached the victim and attacked him with an iron rod, causing injuries to his head and right ear. Medical papers have been provided for the victim’s treatment. The suspect has not yet been arrested.”

According to Metro reported a similar incident in 2019 when soldiers from the 81 Division were accused of being involved in the killing of several residents in Isheri Olofin, a boundary community between Lagos and Ogun States.

The soldiers forcibly removed a resident from the hospital where he was receiving treatment and then stabbed him to death with a bayonet.

A yet-to-be-identified motor boy accompanying a truck lost his life when the vehicle collided with another truck along the Poka Road in the Epe area of Lagos State.

The accident, according to the Head of Public Affairs of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Nosa Okunbor, occurred in the late hours of Monday.

Okunbor, in a statement obtained by *According to Metro* on Tuesday, noted that investigations at the scene of the crash revealed that another truck had attempted to overtake the mini-truck, which contained bags of cement and some individuals, leading to a collision.

He added that the impact of the collision led to the fall of one of the motor boys, who died as a result of the fall.

Okunbor narrated, “Upon arrival of the agency’s response team at the incident scene by 1922hrs, it was observed that a mini-truck, registration number unknown, laden with Dangote Cement, was involved in an accident at the aforementioned carriageway.

“Further investigations by the LRT revealed that the said mini-truck while approaching the abovementioned road, was involved in an accident when attempts by an unknown articulated truck to overtake it resulted in a side collision with the said mini-truck.

“Impact of the collision reportedly resulted in the fall of one of the motor boys who sat on the cement at the back of the mini-truck, and the subsequent loss of his life, while the unknown articulated truck absconded from the scene.”

The LASEMA spokesperson noted that the body of the deceased was handed over to the police for necessary action.

“The LRT has bagged the remains of the victim and handed them over to police officers from Noforija Police Station, led by an Inspector. The bagged commodity has been taken to the Epe General Hospital morgue by the police.”

Gridlock as fallen container truck grounds FCT road

0

A collapsed container truck between the FHA Bridge and the ShopRite Pedestrian bridge along the Lugbe-Airport Road in Abuja has caused a major gridlock on the route.

Our correspondent gathered that the truck, which collapsed along the expressway at about 9 am on Tuesday, forced outbound vehicles headed towards the airport to divert to the opposite lane, causing even more congestion on the expressway.

The FCT Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Muta’a Chorrie, confirming the incident to our correspondent, said officers of the FRSC were on hand to remove the container and clear the gridlock, while stating that it was a fallen container and not a tanker, as some reports had earlier claimed.

“It was just a container that fell on the road. We are making efforts to remove the container and control the traffic. So, it’s a container that fell on the airport road today, not a tanker. I have not received the full details yet. When I get it, I’ll get back to you”, he said.

Giving further updates, the commander said the gridlock had taken between two and three hours to clear, stating that the collapsed truck was carrying a 40-foot container that had fallen and blocked three-quarters of the road, adding that no casualty had been recorded.

“It was a 40-foot trailer that fell down, which we struggled to get off the road for about two to three hours, because it was very heavy. So, the road is clear now, but it was very difficult.”

“There was no casualty, please. Just that the truck fell with the 40-foot container on it, and so the container blocked almost three-quarters of the main lane. That is why it was causing that hold-up. And people started driving haywire, and the traffic became difficult to return to normal, but we have been able to do that now”, he said.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Monday night.

According to Haruna, the command’s surveillance team apprehended the suspects on Saturday in Gwarzo Local Government Area of the state.

“On Saturday, September 7, 2024, the Kano State Police Command’s Surveillance Team, led by CSP Kabiru Isah Kangiwa, achieved a significant breakthrough in the case of a kidnapped four-year-old boy, Muhammad Nasir Jamilu.

“The victim was abducted from Sharada Quarters Kano, whisked to Gwarzo Town, Gwarzo LGA, Kano State, kept hostage and a ransom demand of N10m was made,” he said.

He explained that after negotiations, a sum of N300,000 was paid, pending the balance.

Haruna said on receipt of the report, the Commissioner of Police, Salman Dogo Garba, directed that the victim be rescued and the culprit(s) be trailed and arrested using technical support.

“The detectives arrested three suspects: Hisbullahi Salisu, 30, Hassan Ali Rabiu, 28, both from Yakasai Quarters, Kano and Hassan Aliyu, 22, of Hotoro Quarters, Kano,” he said.

Haruna said the principal suspect, Hisbullahi Salisu, who is a cousin to the victim, confessed to having conspired with the two other suspects, to kidnap the victim and take him to their hideout in Gwarzo Town, Gwarzo LGA, Kano State.

“The victim was rescued unhurt, rushed to the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, and later reunited with his parents.”

“The Kano State Police Command commends the surveillance team for their professionalism and swift response, which led to the successful rescue of the victim unhurt,” the statement added.

Police hunt killers of four in Anambra over land

0

The Anambra State Police Command has said it is in the hunt for the killers of four men in the Agu-Isioye community located on the boundaries of Enugwu Ukwu and Nawfia in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State on Monday when the yet-to-be-identified assailants attacked the community, killing no fewer than four persons and injuring several others.

Although the police initially put the number of dead persons at three, According to Metro gathered on Tuesday that one person later died, thereby bringing the death toll to four.

Our correspondent learnt that the killings occurred when some youths and indigenes of the community were invited by the assailants to a piece of land on the pretence that they were buying the said land, only to be rounded up by the armed men who opened fire on them, thereby killing four persons instantly while others escaped with injuries.

Some sources in the area told our correspondent on Tuesday that the incident created panic in the community as people scampered to safety causing injuries due to the gunshots fired by the armed men.

Investigations showed that there had been recurring farmland disputes and issues bordering on land grabbing between the communities over the years. However, accusations and counter-accusations abound that the assailants were allegedly sponsored by unknown individuals from Nawfia, a neighbouring community that shares a land boundary with Enugwu-Ukwu.

But these allegations were vehemently refuted by the leadership of Nawfia community when contacted who blamed residents of Enugwu-Ukwu for arriving at a “hasty” conclusion without allowing the security operatives to conclude investigations on the incident.

When our correspondent visited the community on Tuesday, some of the indigenes in separate interviews put the death toll at over seven persons, although the police said three.

One of the residents who craved anonymity said, “Yes, armed youths stormed our community on Monday evening and dropped many people dead. They were loaded in a Sienna vehicle and entered the community pretending to be land buyers. They lured some of our youths to a particular land.

“Nobody suspected they were heavily armed with guns and machetes until they got to the said land and started firing gunshots at their victims. In the process, both the people who took them to the land were shot, while passers-by and other residents who scampered to safety at the sounds of gunshots sustained varying degrees of injuries. We counted over seven bodies on the ground. The injured victims were rushed to the hospital.”

Also recounting his ordeal from the sickbed, one of the victims of the attack, who identified himself as Emeka, said, “I don’t know what happened as I was taken by surprise.

“I received a telephone call from someone to come and check something for him at Agu-Isioye. So, when I got there, the next thing I heard was ‘Everybody, lie down! Everybody, lie down!’ And then, I began to inquire what was happening. I also saw some motorcycles belonging to people who I couldn’t even see there.

“So, as I began to question the person who was saying, ‘Everybody, lie down’, he fired a gunshot at me and also fired the person I was with. And there were also some corpses of some unidentified persons who were murdered and dumped inside the bush there.

“The bullets pierced into my stomach and other parts of my body. I managed to limp from inside the bush to the main road with the bullet wounds before I started seeking the help of some persons who assisted in conveying me to a safer place for medication.

“I thank God that I was able to survive the attack. I recall that I also saw the corpse of an indigene of Agu-Ukwu Nri community who was also killed, and dumped inside the same bush. People should be cautious of that area for now, as some heavily armed men still camp there.”

Taking to her Facebook wall, an indigene of the community, Jennifer O, poured out her agony over the gruesome murder of her only brother, in the attack.

“My brother was a victim, the one in black shorts. And he is an only son, not yet married. We are from Nri not Enugwu-Ukwu. I don’t know why they killed him for us. I have not recovered from the shock. They would have left him for us. An only son gone today (Monday, 9th September, 2024). May the soul of her brother rest in peace and may he and other victims get justice, Amen.”

In a statement on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the State, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, had ordered an investigation into the incident and launched a manhunt for the assailants.

He also revealed that the police had visited the scene of the attack and recovered a vehicle abandoned by the assailants, as well as the dead bodies of some of the persons murdered and dumped inside the bush.

The statement read, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, has ordered an investigation into the murder of three persons and left five others seriously injured on Monday 9/9/2024, by 2 pm at Isionye land, a boundary between Enugu Ukwu and Nawfia.

“Preliminary information, revealed that the victims were lured by some individuals through a phone call to the land in the guise of a land transaction and attacked them with guns and matchet.

“Meanwhile, the CP has sued for calm as police operatives have recovered the abandoned Sienna vehicle used by the murders.

“The testimonies of the injured victims, who are currently receiving treatment in the hospital are aiding the investigation, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue.

“Further development shall be communicated, please.”

However, in a brief social media post on the incident on Monday, a prominent indigene of Enugwu-Ukwu community, Dr Uche Nworah, condemned the attack and also captured the reactions of some other concerned indigenes of the community and their calls to government regarding the incident.

He titled the post, “Enugwu-Ukwu community seeks Anambra State Government’s intervention in averting a communal crisis with their neighbours, Nawfia.

It read partly, “Leaders and indigenes of Enugwu-Ukwu community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, have called on the state government to urgently investigate the killing of some of its indigenes by men allegedly sponsored by unknown individuals from Nawfia, a neighbouring community, also in Njikoka.”

Meanwhile, in a swift reaction, on Tuesday, the President-General of Nawfia, Chief Daniel Okoye, and the traditional ruler, Igwe Daniel Obelle, in a statement, denied the allegations of their involvement in the incident, insisting that the town values peace and dialogue and its people are law-abiding citizens who believe in due process.

The leaders strongly denounced the use of violence to settle disputes and described the incident as an “abomination of the highest order.”

They criticised the people accusing their community for making “hasty insinuations” that the perpetrators were from Nawfia, without waiting for a proper police investigation.

The leaders described the comments as “inciteful, prejudicial, provocative, specious, and insensitive” to the sensibilities of Ndi Nawfia, aimed at raising tension for unknown purposes.

The leaders claimed that their investigation did not suggest any involvement of Nawfia individuals in the violent episode adding that “the unwholesome activities of land grabbers and speculators in Agu Anaocha axis have been documented and brought to the attention of the Anambra State government for necessary action.”

Two UK-based Nigerians risk life jail after rape conviction

0

After being convicted by a jury at the Northampton Crown Court in the United Kingdom, two Nigerians, Tosin Dada and Solomon Adebiyi, now face the possibility of life imprisonment for multiple rape charges, According to Metro reports.

According to findings by our correspondent, on Tuesday, information gathered from Lawtons Solicitors, a UK-based law firm, and a feminist charity organisation, Rape Crisis (England & Wales), indicated that, under the UK’s Sexual Offences Act 2003, the maximum sentence for rape is life imprisonment.

According to Online reported on Tuesday that the Northamptonshire Police announced the conviction of the two Nigerians on its official Facebook page on Monday.

The conviction of Dada and Adebiyi follows weeks after a Nigerian pilot, Olukayode Ojo, was found guilty in a Texas court in the United States for making false statements to obtain a certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The Northamptonshire Police announced that the convicts, Dada and Adebiyi, had each been charged with three counts of rape related to a March 2022 incident, while claiming they had engaged in consensual sex with a 17-year-old girl.

However, the jury found these claims false, ruling against them and declaring both guilty.

“Tosin Dada, 34, previously of Knox Road, Wellingborough, and Solomon Adebiyi, 39, previously of Stanley Street, Northampton, were both charged with three counts of rape each in connection with the offence on March 12, 2022.

“Their nine-day trial at Northampton Crown Court ended last week with both men being found unanimously guilty by the jury on all charges after eight hours of deliberation.

“Both men were remanded into custody ahead of sentencing at Northampton Crown Court on October 25, 2024,” the police disclosed.

Lawtons noted that while the average prison sentence for rape ranges from four to 19 years, varying from case to case, there is no statutory minimum sentence for the crime.

“Generally, sentencing for rape convictions starts from four years imprisonment. This sentence would only be given for category three offences and it is also very rare to receive such a short sentence, given that the majority of rape convictions also include some degree of harm or culpability.

“The maximum sentence for rape is life imprisonment. However, when using the term ‘sentenced for life’, it does not mean that someone will spend their whole life in prison. Instead, someone who is given a life sentence usually spends 15 years in prison.

“In these cases, the offenders will spend the rest of their lives on a life licence. This means they would immediately be called back to prison if they were to commit another crime,” the law firm stated on its website.

Our correspondent also learnt that the possibility of the convicted Nigerians bagging life imprisonment for the crime was possible, as mentioned on the official Rape Crisis (England & Wales) website.

“Rape is defined as someone with a penis penetrating another person’s vagina, anus, or mouth without consent and carries a maximum sentence of life in prison,” the feminist charity organisation stated.

Lagos court jails American bizman 74 years for $1.2m visa scam

0

A Lagos State Special Offences Court, in Ikeja, on Tuesday, convicted and sentenced an American businessman, Marco Antonio Ramirez, to  74 years imprisonment, for defrauding victims of $1.2m, through an EB-5 visa scam and an additional $368,698.24, in fraud.

Justice Mojisola Dada, who handed down the sentence, found Ramirez guilty on two separate consolidated charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The court ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

On the first charge, Ramirez was sentenced to eight years each on counts one to six, and 10 years each on counts seven and eight.

On the second charge, he received 10 years each on counts one to 12 for obtaining money by false pretence, and 10 years each on counts 13 to 16 for stealing.

The EFCC said Ramirez and his companies, USA Now LLC, Eagle Ford Instalodge Group LP, and USA Now Energy Capital Group LP, obtained the said money from their victims by promising them access to the  Employment-Based Fifth Preference United States of America Investor Programme, which would qualify them to be eligible for the issuance of USA Green Card and permanent residency, but that the convict reneged on his promise.

Instead of fulfilling these promises, Ramirez converted the funds for his personal use.

Dada, in her judgment, held that “The convict dishonestly converted the money meant for investments to his personal use.

“The prosecution has successfully proved that the promises made to the victims were false, and the funds obtained were under fraudulent pretences,” she said.

The EFCC said Ramirez’s fraudulent activities took place in 2013, noting that one of the victims, Godson Echegile, lost $545,000 to Ramirez under the false pretext that it was a processing fee for his investment, which would qualify him for a U.S. Green Card through the EB-5 programme.

He was initially arraigned on 12 counts bordering on fraud and he pleaded not guilty. Later, the EFCC amended the charge and Ramirez was re-arraigned on 16 counts on June 24, 2022.

The American was said to have committed the offences on February 5 2013 and April 18, 2013, in Lagos.

When the trial commenced, the prosecution counsel, M.S. Owede, who led Samuel Daji, tendered several documentary evidence and called witnesses to prove the allegations against him and he was cross-examined by the defence counsel, Mr. Lawal Pedro (SAN).

The case suffered several adjournments at the stage of adoption of final written addresses before counsel in the suit eventually adopted their final addresses on May 8, 2024, and the judge adjourned for judgment.

However, while delivering judgment on Tuesday, Dada found Ramirez guilty as charged and sentenced him to 10 years each on counts one to 12 bordering on obtaining by false pretence, and 10 years each on counts 13 to 16 bordering on stealing.

The judge also found him guilty on another separate amended nine-count charge bordering on $368,698.24 fraud.

In a separate case, Ramirez was found guilty of defrauding another victim, Gabriel Ogie Edeoghon, for $250,000 on July 26, 2013.

He falsely claimed that the money was for an investment in the USA Now Energy Capital Group LP, which would make Edeoghon eligible for a U.S. Green Card through the EB-5 visa programme.

Ramirez received additional sentences of eight years each on counts one to six and 10 years each on counts seven and eight for this particular fraud.
