Police arrest two for transformer, cable thefts in Edo

A 50-year-old man, KC Okojie Prince, has been arrested for the alleged theft of two electricity transformers and two drums of 2.5 flex cable wires.

Also in custody is one Aruka Uche (40), who reportedly received the stolen items from the suspects.

The suspect allegedly committed the offense at No. 8, Idugboe Estate, off Sapele road, Benin-City, on 11 August, 2024. An accomplice in the crime, one Ojo is at large.

It was gathered that the suspects “deceitfully gain entrance to No. 8 Idugboe Estate, off Sapele Road, Benin City and made away with the following electrical equipment.”

The stolen items are One 300kva transformer, one 100kva transformer and two drums 2.5mm flex cable wire.

This was revealed in a statement by the Command’s spokesman, Moses Yamu on Friday.

Yamu disclosed that diligent investigation by operatives of X-Squad Benin-City led to the arrest of Prince who confessed to have committed the crime with Ojo.

He added, “He further led our operatives to the receiver of the stolen items, one Aruka Uche 40yrs and all the equipment were recovered at No. 5 Eben Street, off Akpakpava, Benin-City.”

Meanwhile, the State Commissioner of Police, Nemi Edwin-Iwo, has sought the support and cooperation of members of the public to give information to the Police that may lead to fishing out criminals.

Edwin-Iwo reiterated the Command’s commitment in ensuring that the spate of kidnappings, armed robbery and other criminal activities is brought to the barest minimum in the state.

Nigerians hungry, yearning for PDP’s return — Chairmanship aspirant

One of the chairmanship aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party, Conrad Utaan, on Friday, lamented the economic hardship in the country, saying Nigerians are deeply yearning for the return of the opposition party.

Utaan disclosed this at a stakeholders’ meeting with the PDP North Central Caucus and Zonal Working Committee in Abuja.

The PDP chieftain further expressed concerns that there is hardly any household in Nigeria, which is not feeling the hardship brought about by President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms.

The opposition party had been in power for 16 years before it was ousted by the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2015 after former Goodluck Jonathan lost to the then APC presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.

Utaan, however, warned that a dream return to the top in 2027 can only happen if the PDP successfully resolves its leadership and internal crisis.

He said, “In Nigeria today, the prices of foodstuff, fuel, transport, accommodation, and school fees are on the rise. As we talk, there are many people whose children have not returned to school this term because they can’t pay.

“Many middle class have dropped out of work because what they are earning cannot transport them to work and back. They would rather stay back home and look for something to do than continue wasting their time. Nigerians are yearning and crying for PDP to return.

“This can only be done if we put our house in order. That is all we require. Once we can do this, the 2027 election is ours to win. This is the period to rebuild and as an engineer, I promise to fix it if the seat of the PDP national chairman is ceded to the North Central.”

The chairmanship aspirant also raised some concerns about the defection of PDP members loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara to the Action People’s Party barely two weeks after the Rivers local government election.

While stating that the crisis rocking the state is a reflection of the polity, Utaan begged the National Executive Committee of the party to consider returning the seat of the PDP national chairmanship to the North Central following the exit of Iyorchia Ayu.

“What is happening in Rivers State is a reflection of what is happening in the country. It is quite unfortunate. The problem of Rivers is an internal one; the solution will also come from the state. What is happening in Rivers is yet to fester. It will also rear its ugly head in other PDP states in Nigeria.

“As you already know, the party that is in government is paraded by criminally inclined people. They even created a crisis in the party to the extent that they could go on a charade in the next round of the elections. It is quite unfortunate. But again, we cannot force decisions on people.

“The crisis in Rivers PDP can only be resolved when our leaders are ready to address it. If you look at the bigwigs and chieftains in the party, they either belong to one camp or the other. But it will take someone without baggage and ego to go to his knees to beg them to return to the roundtable to bring about a lasting solution to the problem,” he stated.

The immediate past Publicity Secretary of Benue PDP, Bemgba Iortyom, also shared his sentiment.

While cautioning that the focus should be on the reconciliation of party bigwigs, Iortyom also drummed support for Utaan’s candidacy.

He said, “For now, we should be talking of reuniting our bigwigs, not lampooning them. These are respected stakeholders who have been together for a long in this party. We will not be joining the PDP governors in the blame game. When it comes to the chairmanship of the PDP, I believe Utaan has the edge.

“He is not coming with any baggage associated with being a former governor or lawmaker. His number one aim is reconciliation. Utaan is coming in as a clean and fresh candidate. To that extent, he has been able to bring about peace in the various ranks of the party in the North Central. We believe he can help restore peace in Rivers State if he is allowed to replace Umar Damugum.”

The distribution of sensitive materials and the deployment of ad hoc staff to their respective polling wards across the 21 local government areas of Anambra State have commenced at the office of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission in Awka, ahead of the local government and councillorship elections scheduled for Saturday.

Our correspondent, who visited the ANSIEC office on Friday, observed that the distribution and labelling of materials proceeded smoothly, under tight security at the Commission’s office in Awka.

Officials, election observers, and ad hoc staff were seen sorting and packaging materials, including voting cubicles, ballot boxes, electoral forms, sheets, markers, pens, and other relevant items, into vehicles designated for various centres.

Hundreds of ad hoc staff, election observers, and media personnel also received accreditation tags and other necessary materials. Some of the ad hoc staff joined the vehicles heading to their duty locations.

Speaking to journalists, the ANSIEC Commissioner in Charge of Information and Logistics, Tony Nnalue, said, “All materials, both sensitive and non-sensitive, have been sorted and packaged, and they are ready to be distributed to the various wards tonight for tomorrow’s voting.

“The ad hoc staff have been mobilised, and the vehicles carrying the materials and personnel are already on the ground. The exercise is in full swing.

“Voting will take place across the 21 local government areas of the state. In areas facing security challenges, special wards have been arranged, and vehicles have been provided to enable voters to access the locations and cast their votes.

“Over 100 candidates from more than 10 political parties are contesting the election. All parties are represented on the ballot, except for one political party, whose candidate has withdrawn from the race.”

Nnalue predicted that the election would be free, fair, and credible, stating, “Contrary to some rumours, we do not favour any candidates. All candidates have been given a level playing field. ANSIEC, as a body, is neutral and unbiased. Yes, the governor appointed us, but after our appointment and inauguration, the Commission became independent.”

He also warned election observers against announcing results, stressing that only the electoral body has the exclusive right to announce the official results.

Anambra restricts movement on Saturday

The Anambra State government has announced a restriction of movement across the state for the local government elections on Saturday.

In a press statement released on Friday, the state Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, stated that the restriction would be from 8 am to 4 pm on Saturday.

Mefor said the measure is intended to ensure a smooth local government election in the state.

He said, “Ndi Anambra are hereby informed that there will be a restriction of movement throughout Anambra State on Saturday, 28th September 2024, from 8 am to 4 pm, as requested by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission.

“The restriction order is to ensure a peaceful and smooth exercise during the Anambra State Local Government Council Election.”

“Those exempted include individuals on election duties and essential services such as ANSIEC officials, electoral observers, accredited journalists, ambulances responding to medical emergencies, firefighters, etc.”

He advised everyone to comply fully with the order in the interest of peace, warning that failure would incur legal consequences

Police arrest two Bauchi varsity students for stealing TV, prayer mat

Bauchi State Police Command has disclosed the arrest of two students of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi for suspected criminal conspiracy, housebreaking, and theft.

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, disclosed this in a press statement on Friday.

He explained that the command acted on intelligence by an individual who alerted the Divisional Police Headquarters Yelwa about a group of students assaulting two of their peers.

The statement noted, “Bamusa Bako, a 25-year-old 400 level student of Urban and Regional Planning, and Yusuf Umar, a 28-year-old 500 level student of Industrial Design, both from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Yelwa Campus.

“Upon receiving the report, a team of detectives led by DPO Yelwa was dispatched to the scene to rescue the victims and initiate an investigation.”

He hinted that, “Preliminary findings suggest that the suspects conspired and broke into the residence of Raji Rabi’u, a 28-year-old 400L student of Estate Management at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

“They allegedly made away with, One 32-inch Hisense TV, One DSTV decoder, One woofer, One speaker, One pair of shoes, One blanket, One prayer mat.”

The spokesman maintained that the suspects are under investigation and have confessed to the offence, stating that the proceeds of crime was to be used to finance their final-year project defence.

Wakil encouraged the public to promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station for swift action.

Police summon officers over N1m extortion of corps members

The Lagos State Police Command has summoned four of its officers to account for their alleged involvement in the extortion of N1 million from some National Youth Service Corps members.

In a Twitter post shared late Thursday, a user tweeting as #YemieFash, identified as Olúyẹmí Fásípè, revealed the incident.

Fásípè stated that the corps members were threatened by the officers and later taken to the Kafaru Oluwole Tinubu House, Area C Police Command, where they were “robbed.”

He added that one of the corps members had failed to present a hard copy of his driver’s licence, which allegedly prompted the extortion.

In a video seen by According to Online, the driver is shown presenting some vehicle documents to one of the officers, who asked, “What of your driver’s licence?” The driver responded, “I’m renewing it.”

The officer then requested the renewal papers, which the driver could not present in hard copy. Subsequently, a man dressed in plain clothes, not immediately identifiable as a police officer, was seen removing the vehicle’s number plate, after which an argument ensued.

The corps members were then led to the police station, during which an accompanying officer ordered them not to use their mobile phones, warning that they would be required to write statements at the station if they did.

One of the officers informed the corps members that it was an offence of “impersonation” to wear only the NYSC cap without the full uniform.

Fásípè’s tweet read: “Dear #BenHundeyin, your officers today in Surulere extorted one million naira from three corps members. They were threatened with firearms, kidnapped, and taken to the Kafaru Oluwole Tinubu House, Area C Police Command of the #LagosPoliceNG, where they were robbed. Their offence was not having a physical copy of a driver’s licence. This is evil!

“According to the victims, the officer in mufti is the one who collected the money (their boss).

“Ben, #BenHundeyin, here are the transaction receipts and a voice note of one of the victims explaining how the rogue officers extorted money from the three corps members.”

In response, the spokesperson for the state command, Benjamin Hundeyin, tweeting as #BenHundeyin, wrote on Friday: “The men have been summoned, and their trial has commenced. We urge the complainants to visit the Complaint Response Unit at the state headquarters to testify at the ongoing trial.”

The actions of the police officers have drawn widespread condemnation from netizens.

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office has sealed off the Orchid Shopping Centre in the Eti-Osa area of the state, over threat to public health.

This was disclosed in a statement shared on X.com by the state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Friday.

According to the statement, the shopping centre was shut down for discharging wastewater on the road and public drains, thereby creating environmental nuisance and endangering public health.

The statement read, “The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) today, Friday, September 27, 2024 sealed off Orchid Shopping Centre’s premises located along Orchid Road, Eti-Osa, for discharging wastewater unto the road and public drains thereby creating environmental nuisance and endangering public health.”

The statement further revealed that the agency threatened heavy sanctions on other businesses across the state who are in the habit that pose a threat to public health.

“The agency advices all persons or organisations in the habit of discharging untreated wastewater and sewage into the environment to desist or face sanctions. The necessary sanctions will be served to the property, the owner(s), and occupiers in line with the provisions of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017.

“The Lagos State Government reiterates that the State has zero tolerance for environmental pollution and degradation,” the statement added.

Observers promise to partner security agents on credible Anambra LG poll 

The election observers accredited by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission for the Saturday, September 28, 2024 local government elections, have expressed commitment in collaboration with security agencies, to check proliferation of small arms and light weapons before, during and after the exercise.

The Coordinator of the group, Chris Azor, while addressing journalists at a stakeholders’ engagement in Awka, on Friday, said that his team would collaborate with security agencies and other patriotic citizens to ensure that the election was credible, violence-free and peaceful.

Azor listed the strategies as pre-election environment monitoring, paying attention to potential hotspots and areas prone to violence, voter education and awareness on the dangers of small arms proliferation and the importance of peaceful elections, through community outreach programmes and public awareness campaigns.

This, according to the group, would be implemented in collaboration with security agencies, to ensure that voting centres are secure and free from arms, incident reporting and documentation.

Azor said, “There would be intentional and deliberate post-election monitoring of the environment to prevent potential violence and ensure a peaceful transition, through observation of voting centers and hotspots.

“The mechanisms have become imperative considering the present worrisome security challenges in the state and indeed the South-East region.

“Proliferation of small arms has contributed to electoral violence, banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping and sundry criminality.

“We would mobilise over 100 observers across the state, and set up a Situation Room Coordination Centre in Awka, the capital city for real time collaboration and timely reportage of activities during the exercise, for the desired result.”

He urged political parties and candidates to commit to promotion of peaceful conduct, stakeholder engagement and non violence.

The group also called on security agencies to maintain neutrality, fairness and impartiality while preserving human rights and rule of law, enjoining accredited election observers to conform to the code of conduct and eschew all forms of interference with the electoral process.

“Eligible voters should exercise their franchise peacefully without any let or hindrance. We hereby, urge political parties and candidates to commit to promotion of peaceful conduct, stakeholder engagement and non-violence.

“Security agencies should maintain neutrality, fairness and impartiality while preserving human rights and rule of law,” it added

The group commended the election management body, ANSIEC, for demonstrating full preparedness and commitment to integrity of the entire exercise.

More than nine million Nigerians have benefited from the program, according to the Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES).

On Friday in Akure, during the program’s fifth Zonal Peer Learning and Experience Sharing Event, Dr. Abdulkarim Obaje, the National Coordinator of NG-CARES, made this announcement.

Obaje conveyed optimism that the program will end poverty and bring about constructive change in Nigerian culture.

Well over 9 million people have benefited from the intervention.

The state and federal governments of Nigeria will get assistance from NG-CARES in their efforts to end poverty.
