Speeding vehicle knocks down fleeing suspected thief in Lagos

A yet-to-be-identified male adult suspected to be a thief was on Sunday found lying unconscious after being knocked down by a hit-and-run driver in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State.

According to Metro learnt that the incident happened on Friday morning.

Our correspondent gathered that the suspect had broken into an apartment in the community in the early hours of Friday when some residents saw him.

To avoid being apprehended, he was said to have taken to his heels while some residents chased him.

While fleeing the community, he suddenly ran into the expressway and got hit by a speeding vehicle in the process.

Our correspondent during a visit to the community on Sunday saw the suspect with swollen eyes and bruised body still lying on the roadside just by the edge of the Abule Egba bridge.

A trader, Ganiyat Enitan, who owns a shop close to the bridge, told According to Metro that the accident victim had been on the spot since the incident happened.

He said, “We met him there on Friday morning and he has been there since then. We were told that he was caught scaling a fence at midnight and those who saw him decided to chase him. He was trying to run across to the other side when he ran into a vehicle that knocked him down.”

During a closer look, our correspondent discovered that he was still breathing as his legs moved at intervals.

Another business owner who identified himself simply as Sesan said he was initially lying on the bridge walkway before he rolled into the main road.”

“We saw him this morning on the main road. It was later that some LASTMA officials came to put a tyre behind him as a caution to prevent vehicles from climbing him.”

Meanwhile, a transport worker, Saheed Adekunle, has urged the state government to evacuate him from the spot before he gets run over by a vehicle.

He said, “We want the state government to come and remove him from here. If he spends longer time on the road where he is now, I am sure he will be crushed by a vehicle. The tyre LASTMA put there is not enough to stop that. Those trucks you see drive roughly and often climb the walkway. So, how much more on the road where is lying.”

All the calls made on Sunday to the spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, Nosa Okunbor, were not responded to while a text message sent to him had yet to be replied to when this report was filed.

Delta APC hails Okowa’s arrest

Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has lauded the arrest and detention of former Delta Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, saying “it is a positive step in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against corruption”.

“Okowa’s arrest signifies the administration’s dedication to tackling financial mismanagement and corruption at both state and federal levels,” the party further said.

This was made known in a statement signed by Delta APC State Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, copies of which were made available to journalists in Warri on Tuesday.

The According reports that Okowa, who served as the Governor of Delta State from 2015 to 2023, was on Monday arrested and detained by operatives of the EFCC over the alleged diversion of N1.3tn derivation fund.

The N1.3trn amounted to a 13 per cent derivation fund from the federation account between 2015 and 2023.

The erstwhile Delta governor was said to be at the EFCC office in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, following the invitation of the investigators probing the allegations against him, when he was subsequently nabbed and slammed with charges relating to alleged financial misconduct involving state funds and questionable contracts awarded during his time in office.

The party, in its statement, commended the Federal Government for its decisive action, urging the EFCC to continue its investigation into the financial dealings of other former governors and public officials.

Delta APC emphasised that Okowa’s arrest reflects a broader agenda “to curb corruption, promote transparency, and ensure that public funds benefit the citizens rather than serving personal interests”.

The statement partly read, “We in the APC wholeheartedly welcome the arrest of former Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, who oversaw one of the most concerning cases of financial mismanagement during his eight-year tenure.

“His administration allegedly funnelled significant state resources into personal ventures, including establishing a bank, financing a failed presidential ambition, and supporting the controversial imposition of a successor.

“The arrest serves as a caution to all public officeholders, affirming that the era of impunity is over and that no one, irrespective of position or political affiliation, is above the law.

“The fight against corruption must be thorough and unwavering, and we commend the administration’s efforts in this regard.”

The statement continued, “The legacy of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration is a high debt profile resulting from a reckless borrowing spree, which earned him the notorious nickname of ‘Borrow Borrow Governor’.

“During his eight years in office, Delta State has little to show for the vast federal allocations received.

The few substandard roads he constructed, often hailed as the ‘roadmaster,’ have deteriorated rapidly.”

Court remands man for allegedly killing 11-year old houseboy

A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Enugu East has remanded Anthony Onyeukwu, 47, over the death of his 11-year-old houseboy, Goodluck John.

The Commissioner of Gender, Ngozi Enih, revealed in a statement on Sunday that this move “is a part of Enugu State’s ongoing efforts to combat child abuse.”

Enih noted that Onyeukwu’s arrest followed a tip-off from the ministry’s whistleblower channels, suggesting that Goodluck’s death resulted from abuse within the household where he lived.

Onyeukwu was alleged to have hastily buried Goodluck’s remains in Abia State without reporting the death to the authorities, claiming the boy died from an illness at the Park Lane Hospital in Enugu. However, she said hospital records contradicted this claim, showing no admission or deposition of the corpse.

The statement disclosed that while arraigning the suspect last week, the Police Prosecutor, Inspector Calista Ifeanyi argued that Onyeukwu’s actions are punishable under Enugu State’s Revised Criminal Code saying that the case highlighted the state’s commitment to protecting children’s rights and preventing abuse, as outlined in the Child’s Rights and Responsibility Law of 2016.

The charge sheet marked: CME/631C/2024 read, “That you, Onyeukwu Anthony, ‘m’ on 15th day of October 2024, at about 20:30 hours at No. 4, Mike Onyeka Close, Loma Linda Extension, Maryland, Enugu, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did unlawfully kill one Goodluck John ‘m’ aged 11 years and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 274 (1) of the Criminal Code, CAP 30, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria, 2004.”

The Chief Magistrate subsequently ordered the suspect’s remand in the Correctional Centre, Enugu and, adjourned the matter to November 20, 2024, when the report from the Director of Public Prosecutions, Ministry of Justice, Enugu, would be expected.

The ruling All Progressives Congress, on Tuesday, launched a renewed attack on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing him as an infamous election loser.

The National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Felix Morka, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja.

Morka was reacting to Monday’s claim by the former Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate that he didn’t lose the 2023 election.

In a post via his official X handle, Atiku posted that the mandate was ‘criminally stolen’ from him.

However, the APC spokesman stated that nobody takes the former Vice President seriously anymore as a result of his long record of electoral defeats, which have even been further certified in Nigeria’s courts.

He said, “Make no mistake. Atiku is Africa’s most infamous presidential election loser. Since serving as vice president, he has lost election to every single president who has been elected to office in Nigeria. Six times in the last 17 years, Nigerians have declared their verdict of uncanny desperation and lack of sportsmanship and roundly rejected him at the polls.

Atiku’s inability to come to terms with the reality of his rejection cuts an ominous portrait of extreme and disturbing political desperation.

“Nigeria’s intelligent and discerning electorate will not act against their own best interest by electing into office a man with some of the most obscene record of breach of public trust, so odious that, former President Olusegun Obasanjo reportedly stated that “if I support Atiku for anything, God will not forgive me.”

10 dies, one injured in Jigawa auto crash

Ten people have lost their lives and one sustained injuries in a fatal road accident at Yanfari village in the Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Tuesday.

Adam said the accident, which occurred on Monday, involved a Toyota Hummer bus and a parked trailer.

He explained that the accident happened when the Toyota Hummer bus with registration number HDJ 631 YDD, travelling from Kano to Hadejia, collided with a parked trailer with registration number RGN180 ZC, causing the bus to somersault.

He stated, “The Jigawa State Police Command regrets to announce that on 12 November 2024, at about 21:30 hrs, a fatal motor vehicle accident occurred in Yanfari village, Taura LGA, along the Kano/Hadejia Road.”

According to him, the driver of the vehicle and nine other passengers died at the scene, while one passenger sustained injuries.

“Upon receipt of the tragic report, the patrol team attached to Taura Division rushed to the scene, where 10 bodies were evacuated to Hadejia General Hospital for medical examinations.

“The attending doctor certified them dead, while the remaining passenger was admitted to Majia Primary Health Care Centre and is responding to treatment,” he said.

He added that an investigation has commenced to determine the cause of the accident.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, announced the operation on X.com on Sunday.

US man kills family members, takes own life after Trump’s victory

A United States man, Anthony Nephew, shot himself, his wife, ex-partner, and two children after the November 5 election that brought President-elect Donald Trump into office.

According to authorities who spoke to the New York Post on Sunday, the 46-year-old Minnesota father had expressed anger over Trump’s election.

The shooter, aged 46, had a “pattern of mental health issues,” Duluth Police Chief Mike Ceynowa said on Friday — one day after authorities found five people dead inside two homes in the city.

Authorities found Anthony Nephew’s ex-partner, Erin Abramson, 47, and their son, Jacob Nephew, 15, dead from apparent gunshot wounds inside their home on Thursday afternoon, police said.

After identifying Anthony Nephew as a suspect, police found his 45-year-old wife, Kathryn Nephew, and their 7-year-old son, Oliver Nephew, dead from gunshot wounds inside their family home nearby.

Before the tragedy, Anthony Nephew had been sharing left-wing and anti-Trump posts on his Facebook account.

“My mental health and the world can no longer peacefully coexist, and a lot of the reason is religion,” Anthony Nephew wrote in July.

“I am terrified of religious zealots inflicting their misguided beliefs on me and my family. I have intrusive thoughts of being burned at the stake as a witch or crucified on a burning cross.

“Having people actually believe that I or my child are Satan, or the anti-Christ, or whatever their favourite boogeyman they are afraid of this week.”

In another post, he accused Republicans of “making it harder for women to leave” abusive relationships.

“Gilead here we come,” he wrote, referencing The Handmaid’s Tale, a dystopian novel turned Hulu series in which women, stripped of their rights, are forced to reproduce for the ruling class.

Anthony Nephew also shared other political posts, including an image of former President Barack Obama, Trump, President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris. The word “hate” was under Trump’s face, while the words “hope,” “heal,” and “grow” corresponded with the Democratic politicians.

“Not that anyone cares, but as an Independent voter, I would really like to see both the political parties in our country pick better candidates,” he wrote in July. “We can do better than a binary choice between fascism and not fascism.”

Anthony Nephew had previously issued a chilling warning about his struggles with mental health, writing in an op-ed for the Duluth News Tribune in 2021, “For millions of Americans, a breakdown leads to suicide — or homicide before suicide.”

“Mental health in this country is stigmatised, ignored, or treated as a burden for the individual to bear alone, with little help and even less understanding,” he wrote.

“Americans deny they have mental health struggles — because they have to, because they’re told to, or because they don’t realise their mind is broken.”

Police in Duluth, a city of nearly 90,000 residents about 135 miles north of Minneapolis, have not yet determined a motive for the shootings.

Police said there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Police ready for gov election, says commissioner

The Ondo State Police Commissioner, Abayomi Oladipupo, has stated that the state police command is well-prepared for the upcoming governorship election on November 16.

Oladipupo made this statement as the command commenced training for officers in preparation for the forthcoming election.

The training began on Tuesday and concluded on Wednesday.

Speaking at the event, held at the Officers’ Mess in Akure, Oladipupo explained that the training was an initiative of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as part of the police force’s efforts to ensure professionalism among officers during the off-cycle poll.

The CP said, “This training programme is organised under the guidance of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in preparation for the upcoming off-cycle elections on November 16, 2024, in Ondo State. The Inspector General has initiated this programme to ensure that officers of all ranks across the state are well-prepared.

“This two-day programme will cover, in-depth, the statutory roles of the police during elections as defined in the Electoral Act of 2022. It will also emphasise human rights and other day-to-day policing responsibilities. Officers are expected to familiarise themselves with these essential duties, although the material isn’t new for most of us.

“We’ve already held a training session two weeks ago, and this is just one of several programmes organised in anticipation of the elections. The officers here have come from various locations across the state and are filling key positions. My advice to them is to take full advantage of this opportunity provided by the Inspector General of Police.

“They need to be clear about what is expected of them, what they must and must not do. There can be no excuse for failure. The eyes of the world are on Ondo State, and I am confident that our officers will perform their duties with professionalism and integrity.”

In his remarks, a consulting firm handling the training for the officers, GTA Consulting Firm, represented by Johnson Ategihe, stated that the objective of the programme was to address the security challenges in the state.

“There have been concerns about potential violence, but the Inspector General of Police has emphasised the importance of strengthening the capacity of officers to assure the public, voters, and all stakeholders of a level playing field.

“The programme aims to ensure comprehensive security for everyone involved, supporting a free and fair election process without violence. Our goal is to create an environment where all stakeholders can participate equally and confidently, and where the election outcome is free from disturbances,” Ategihe stated.
