Fire at Spanish retirement home kills 10

An overnight fire in a retirement home in the town of Villafranca de Ebro in northeastern Spain killed at least 10 people, the local emergency service said on Friday.

The emergency services in the region of Aragon did not provide further details in its post on X, but Spanish media said there were 82 people inside the home when the blaze broke out at around 5:00 am (0400 GMT) due to unknown causes.

In a final push ahead of Saturday’s election in Ondo State, the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has said that the election is a litmus test for Nigerians to demonstrate that their hunger and anger can lead to real change.

He stressed that it is incumbent on the people of Ondo State to turn out in large numbers on Saturday to make a bold statement about their desire for good governance.

According to a newsletter released on Thursday night, titled “It’s Time to Make a Bold Statement,” the Oyo governor said that those who value good governance should vote for the Peoples Democratic Party in the election.

Makinde argued that the PDP is the party that can rescue Nigeria and lift it out of its current economic challenges. He pointed out that evidence from PDP-governed states shows the party’s ability to deliver the development needed across the country.

“Let me begin by encouraging everyone in Ondo State to come out this Saturday and make a bold statement in the Ondo State elections. Let all supporters of good governance stand up and say enough of the APC and its lack of people-centred policies. It is time for Nigerians to rally behind the PDP as the party that can help Nigeria overcome the economic challenges it faces.

“I want to remind you that Ondo State is a litmus test for Nigerians to show that their hunger and anger can bring about real change. Tell everyone you know that the PDP is the party that can rescue Nigeria. If you are still undecided, look at all the efforts being made by PDP governors for their people. Just yesterday, we presented our Budget of Economic Stabilisation.

“As always, it was a people-first budget. Based on data from previous years, there is a 7:10 chance of us successfully implementing the items in the budget. So, the people of Oyo State can expect more infrastructure development, more educational projects, and greater economic progress.

“In conclusion, economically, we look forward to better times in 2025. We just have to keep pushing and making the right decisions in the overall interest of our people and our nation,” Makinde stated.

Osun motorcyclist killed in auto crash

A motorcyclist, whose identity was unknown, has been reportedly killed in a lone accident that occurred in Okuku along the Offa Expressway in Osun State.

In a statement obtained in Osogbo, the state capital, on Thursday, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun State Command, Kehinde Adeleke, said the deceased was recovered from the scene of the crash.

Adeleke further said the accident occurred around 10:30 pm on Wednesday along the busy expressway.

“On Wednesday, at about 2230HRS, there was a lone fatal accident which claimed the life of one unknown person while travelling on his motorcycle at Oke Anu Area in Okuku along the Offa Expressway.

“Information gathered revealed that the deceased was of the Gari-Alimi Area of Ilorin in Kwara State,” Adeleke said.

She added that the relatives of the deceased had been identified and contacted, while his remains had been deposited in a mortuary for further investigations.

The statement further read, “A TVS unregistered motorcycle and the corpse recovered has been deposited in a mortuary for further investigation.

“The corps, NPF and other security agents were at the accident scene and we reached out to the family of the deceased.”

Four jailed 20 years for drug trafficking

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday convicted and sentenced four men, Godswill Zevor; Phillip Erugbe; Agbeko Dumuda and Monday Kponeba, to 20 years imprisonment for importing 1,120 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa.

Justice Musa Kakaki handed down the jail term after the convicts pleaded guilty to the offences of unlawful importation and transportation of the banned weed, brought against them by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

Earlier, the NDLEA prosecution counsel, Paul Awogbuyi, told the court that the convicts were arrested on August 25, 2024, at the sea, along the Oniru Beach area of Lekki, Lagos State.

He said the convicts imported 1,120 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa, a narcotic drug similar to cocaine, heroin and LSD.

According to Awogbuyi, the offences committed contravened Sections 11(a) and 11(b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 2004 and are punishable under the same Act.

The convicts who are foreign nationals, pleaded guilty to the charges against them.

Following their guilty plea, the prosecutor reviewed the facts of the case and tendered some exhibits which included the bulk of the prohibited weed concealed in two jumbo sacks, their confessional statements among others.

Awogbuyi, while citing some authorites, urged the court to convict and sentence them in relation to the sections of the NDLEA Act they were charged with.

But the convicts’ lawyer, G. U. Okaka, did not oppose the admissibility of the exhibits tendered before the court.

He however pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing his clients, based on their earlier guilty plea.

Okaka also pleaded with the court to consider that the convicts were first-time offenders, who did not have any previous record of conviction.

He urged the court to give his clients a fine option in lieu of the custodian sentence.

Justice Kakaki in his judgment after listening to the counsel’s submissions held that: “I have discovered that payment of fine has not deterred people going into the illicit trade of drugs.

“I have also considered the quantity of the drug -1,120 kilograms- and the damage caused to society by the effect of the drug, as well as, the statements of the convicts to the effect that they involved themselves to get paid for the job.

“Consequently, each of the convicts is hereby sentenced to five years imprisonment on each count which is to run concurrently.”

Four Kogi varsity lecturers dismissed for sexual misconduct

The Governing Council of the Federal University, Lokoja, has approved the dismissal of four lecturers on account of examination misconduct and sexual misconduct.

Our correspondent gathered that the governing council gave the approval at its Second Council Meeting on Thursday.

This is coming on the heels of the investigation following allegations of examination malpractices and sexual harassment levelled against the lecturers last year.

The council, under the leadership of Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, appreciated the university management for following due process in the investigation that followed the allegations of examination misconduct and sexual harassment against the lecturers.

Ndoma-Egba said, “The council will not tolerate any unethical conduct in the university” and urged the university to quickly process the remaining cases of misconduct pending, especially the one in the Faculty of Science that is trending in the media.

While cautioning staff members and lecturers against all forms of molestation of students, the council said no misconduct would be swept under the carpet.

It also urged the students always to speak out when they are molested.

Chinese remanded for alleged N301m fraud

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Thursday remanded a Chinese national, Zhengjia Jin, in the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, Lagos State for allegedly defrauding his employer.

Justice Rahman Oshodi remanded Jin after he took his plea.

Jin was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on four counts bordering on the retention of stolen property, bribery, and stealing.

The EFCC said Jin committed the alleged offences between March 5 and August 9, 2024, in Lagos.

The prosecution counsel, Mr. Ahmad Usman, told the court that the defendant dishonestly retained the aggregate sum of N301m in his bank account domiciled in Access Bank, property of Golden Diamond Industrial Manufacturing Company Limited.

Usman said the defendant, whilst in the engagement of Golden Diamond Industrial Manufacturing Company Limited, accepted directly the sum of N301m into his Access Bank account and acted contrary to his company’s employee condition of service.

He said Jin obtained the said money as kickbacks from vendors, thereby conferring undue advantage for himself, and acted contrary to his company’s employee condition of service.

The prosecutor also said the defendant dishonestly converted the sum of N301m, property of Golden Diamond Industrial Manufacturing Company Limited, to his use.

According to the prosecutor, the offences committed contravened Sections 328, 83 Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011 and Section 280 (2) and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

The defendant’s counsel, A.C. Ezenduka, informed the court that he had filed a bail application for his client.

But Usman told the court they hadn’t been served.

Justice Oshodi, in his ruling, remanded the defendant in the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, pending the hearing of his bail application.

“I remand the defendant, Jin, at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre pending his trial date,” Oshodi said.

The judge fixed the hearing of the bail application till November 22, 2024.

Oshodi further adjourned the case to January 10, 2025, for the commencement of trial.

Man arrested for impregnating Ogun minor

A man identified as Samuel Ani has been arrested for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl (name withheld) in the Sagamu community of Ogun State.

According to Metro learnt on Thursday that the suspect was caught on Wednesday, at about 2 pm having carnal knowledge of the minor.

The state police command further said that Ani was also suspected to have impregnated the minor, a crime he had confessed to carrying out.

The spokesperson for the command, Omolola Odutola, informed our correspondent that the survivor had been immediately taken to the hospital for medical examination.

Odutola said, “The father known only as Paul had approached the division to report the crime suspect committed against his daughter. The suspect allegedly defiled the minor and is also accused of impregnating her. The 28-year-old suspect had been arrested and detained by the command.

“The matter will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department once the preliminary investigation is completed. In the meantime, the survivor has been taken to a hospital for medical examination.”

Fire guts Lagos factory, destroys goods

Goods worth millions of naira have been destroyed after a fire gutted a factory in the Ladipo Oluwole area of Ikeja, Lagos State, on Wednesday night.

The Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, Magaret Adeseye, while confirming the inferno in a statement on Thursday, said the agency responded to a distress call at 8:41 pm on Wednesday.

She added that the affected goods included bodyspray, perfumes, creams and others.

The statement read, “The factory fire which erupted at Imperio International, 6 Ayodele Diyan Street, off Ladipo Oluwole Street, Ikeja, Lagos on Wednesday night has been doused by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

“The blaze left substantial damage to goods including bodyspray, perfumes, and creams among others while partially affecting the twin warehouse block was confined.

“This was consequent upon prevention of further spread to the rear twin warehouse block used for production which incident could have been more devastating due to the volatility of raw materials and equipment storage as well as factory personnel it houses.”

Adeseye stated that the fire was brought under control a few hours into the midnight, adding that “it is still being salvaged with dampening down of embers from the remains of salvaged goods as the operations moved to recovery stage to allow for a mop-up of the premises.”

The LFRS boss revealed that no casualty was recorded while the investigation was ongoing to unravel the cause of the incident.

“The cause of the incident which investigation is running simultaneously with the recovery will be revealed upon completion as no casualty was recorded.

“The operations are a true reflection of public-private partnership and synergy as Godrej Safety Department, Mouka Foam, Nigerchin and others joined LASEMA, LASAMBUS, and the Nigeria Police to complement the efforts of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to bring the situation under control,” the statement added.

Three arraigned for stealing N2m phones from crash scene

The Lagos State Police Command has begun the process of arraigning three suspects arrested in the Ikeja area of the state for attempting to steal the mobile phones of some accident victims.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Rapid Response Squad of the command and shared on its Facebook page on Thursday.

The statement noted that the three suspects, Isaiah Adegbenro, Edet Johnson, and Efe Sowemimo, were arrested on Wednesday by an RRS team on a routine patrol while ransacking a vehicle involved in an accident.

It read, “Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad yesterday (Wednesday) night arrested three suspected thieves for stealing two phones from accident victims on Governor’s Road, Alausa, Ikeja.

“The suspects: Isaiah Adegbenro (38), Edet Johnson (30) and Efe Sowemimo (28), were arrested a few metres away from the accident point while trying to escape with the phones.”

It added that the driver of the accident vehicle had run into a road divider after losing control and rather than the suspects assisting the victims, they resorted to stealing their mobile phones which included two iPhones valued at N1,920,000.

“The accident victims were heading towards Ikeja in a red Toyota Camry 2010 when the driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a road divider in front of Adeyemi Bero end of Governor Road, Alausa, Ikeja.

“The three suspects who were close to the scene when the accident happened, rather than assist the driver and the occupants out of the badly damaged vehicle, were ransacking the victims’ pockets and vehicle. Stolen from the accident victims were: an iPhone 15, valued at N1,300,000:00 and an iPhone 12 worth N620,000:00.

“The RRS operatives who were patrolling the area, when alerted about the actions of the fleeing suspects, pursued them and recovered the two iPhones from their pockets.”

Upon the suspects’ arrest, they were said to have confessed to the crime which prompted the RRS commander, Shola Jejeloye, to order immediate commencement of their trial.

“The operatives assisted the victims to the hospital and also removed the vehicle from obstruction.

“The suspects have made significant confessions. They are to be charged to court today in line with the directives of commander, Rapid Response Squad, CSP Shola Jejeloye,” the statement concluded.

According to Metro reported on March 18 that two notorious traffic robbers, identified as Olumide Oladiji and Lekan Ibrahim, were arrested in the Agungi Lekki area of the state.

A police source had told our correspondent that the suspected robbers posed as beggars on the expressway to steal from motorists plying the road.

The source added that the culprits forcibly retrieved the victim’s phone and gold necklace, adding that the victim alerted the patrol personnel of the Ilasan division stationed at the Jakande roundabout, leading to their arrest.

A 27-year-old private driver, Emmanuel Bright, has allegedly stolen a Toyota Rav 4 SUV with number plate EPE318HB belonging to his employer, Mrs Deborah Makinde, at T.A. Gardens in the Warewa area of Ogun State.

The 78-year-old retiree, who raised the alarm, told According to Metro on Thursday that the incident occurred on Friday, November 8, around 3 pm.

She narrated that Bright had sought her permission to wash the car, but she turned down his request. Bright was said to have again deflated the tyre of the car while he sought permission to pump it.

Citing her disapproval of the second request, Makinde said the driver thereafter drove the car away with the supposedly deflated tyre.

She said, “I was in the sitting room with my husband around 3 pm on Friday when he said he wanted to wash the car and I said he wanted to wash the car at that time of the day and that he should wait till the evening time. After a while, he came back again and said the tyre was deflated. I knew it was not true because I just returned from the market with the car.

“I told him it was not true and he asked me to come and look at it. When I saw it, I knew he was up to something. So, I asked him to replace it with an extra tyre. That was how he waited for me to go inside and decided to drive the car away with the deflated tyre.”

She added that residents expressed surprise at seeing him drive away with the car in that condition.

“Those who saw him said they were wondering why he was driving the car that way. A PoS operator on the street also said he told her that I asked him to collect N1,000 from her.”

Makinde said she only employed Bright close to three weeks ago, adding that efforts to get his guarantor to intervene had been unsuccessful. “We called the guarantor and told him what happened and he said he had since been saying that he was busy,” she disclosed.

While noting that the incident was reported to the police, she lamented that the car was used to convey her sick husband to the hospital.

“The very day it happened, we went to Warewa Police Station to make a report and since then, they claimed to have been sending messages around. My son also came and spoke to them and they said they were going to track it. My husband is 88 years and he has been sick for a while. This is the car that we use to take him to the hospital. I also have difficulties sleeping due to what happened.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, did not respond to calls made to her telephone. A text message sent to her had yet to be responded to.
