APC Denies Withdrawing Presidential Campaign Council List For 2027 Election

0

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has dismissed as rumor reports that it has withdrawn its 2027 Presidential Campaign Council list.

The party’s national spokesman, Felix Morka, while making this rebuttal on Tuesday morning, said the APC would formally announce any changes to the campaign council list.

This was after reports that the party had withdrawn the list released in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking to TheCable, Morka however stressed that the reports were without basis.

This is gossip. “Any modifications to the list will be formally announced,” he said.

As the party prepares for the 2027 presidential election where President Bola Tinubu is seeking re-election, APC has announced the composition of its Presidential Campaign Council.

The list has since drawn reactions from within the party and stakeholders, with some members raising concerns about the inclusion or omission of certain figures.

The development also sparked speculation that the makeup of the campaign structure could be tweaked.

US Steps Up Military Training For Nigerian Forces In Bauchi

The United States has stepped up military training for Nigerian troops in Bauchi State, with an emphasis on unmanned aircraft systems, combat casualty care and other battlefield skills.

The training, which took place at an operational location in Bauchi, is part of wider US-Nigeria security cooperation aimed at improving military capability, operational readiness and long-term capacity of Nigerian forces.

The drills included Combat Lifesaver and Tactical Combat Casualty Care, weapons familiarization, camouflage, water treatment and testing, explosive ordnance disposal, small-unit tactics and unmanned aircraft systems, according to a United States Africa Command report released Monday.

“The U.S. and Nigerian forces are participating in a series of training events at Operating Location Bauchi, Nigeria, to share military expertise, build partner capacity and foster relationships between service members from both countries.

“Training between U.S. and Nigerian forces at Bauchi has included Combat Lifesaver and Tactical Combat Casualty Care instruction, weapons familiarization, camouflage, water treatment and testing, explosive ordnance disposal, small unit tactics and unmanned aircraft system training,” it said.

Capt Gabriel Feingold, a logistics officer with the US Army Southern European Task Force, Africa and operations officer at OL Bauchi, said Nigerian personnel were given the opportunity to identify the training areas they found most beneficial.

“We provide them with a list of several different training topics, and they select what they feel would be most beneficial for them,” Feingold said.

The report said the unmanned aircraft systems were of particular interest to the Nigerian forces. The training was led by Sgt. Mark Murphy, an intelligence analyst with the 13th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, and included about 10 members of the Nigerian Air Force Special Forces Regiment.

The Nigerian personnel were first given about 45 minutes of instruction before taking part in hands-on exercises involving the operation of the aircraft and the use of information gathered by the systems in military operations.

“They were really excited to get hands-on time with it,” Murphy said, adding that the Nigerian personnel were interested in receiving further training.

The exercises were also meant to bolster relationships and enhance interoperability between U.S. and Nigerian personnel, especially at the lower levels of the two forces, the U.S. Africa Command said.

“It helps build relationships between Soldiers and the partner force, especially down at the lower levels,” Feingold said.

The development comes after AFRICOM announced in July that the United States had withdrawn most of its troops that were sent to Nigeria for a specific counterterrorism operation, but maintained intelligence-sharing and security cooperation with the country.

AFRICOM said both nations were continuing to identify areas to share expertise and improve military capabilities, and additional training opportunities were being developed at the Bauchi operating location.

AAU ASUU Commences Indefinite Strike Over Allowance Arrears, 2025 Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma chapter, has embarked on an indefinite strike over the alleged non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria-ASUU agreement by the Edo State Government.

The union was said to have made this known in a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Cyril Oziegbe Onogbosele and Secretary, Dr. William Odion, made available to newsmen in Benin City.

In a statement issued Monday, August 24, 2026, the union said the strike would begin today, Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

The statement said the decision was taken at the union’s congress held on Monday after the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum given to the S state government and the management of the university.
The update on the ultimatum after several failed attempts by the branch to get the university authorities and Edo State Government to implement the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement was deliberated upon by the Congress.

The briefing showed that there was no formal response from the university authorities and Edo State Government over the 14-day ultimatum on the implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement in the university.

“The Congress was specifically told that the Agreement is yet to be implemented and that there is no formal commitment from the university authorities and Edo State Government on the implementation of the Agreement in the university,” the statement said.

It added that after exhaustive deliberations, the Congress decried the failure of the university authorities and the Edo State Government to meet the union’s demands.

The statement listed the demands to include implementation of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement and payment of accrued arrears of allowances from January 2026 to date.

Members would cease to provide any statutory services with effect from 12.01am and continue to do so indefinitely.

The industrial action, the statement said, covers the conduct and invigilation of all forms of examinations including undergraduate, postgraduate, oral, CBE and paper-based examinations as well as statutory meetings.

Others are departmental, faculty, senate and committee meetings, students’ research project supervision and Industrial Training (IT)/Teaching Practice supervisions.

“Congress directed the Executive Committee (EXCO) of the branch to engage the press/media through press conferences, releases etc., over the non-implementation of the Agreement in the university.

“Finally, Congress further directed the EXCO to activate the Strike Monitoring Team and urged members to strictly comply with the resolutions of the Strike Monitoring Team,” the statement said.

Tinubu Moves To Restructure APC Campaign Council Over ‘Corrupt’ Members

Sources in the presidency and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have revealed that President Bola Tinubu decided to review the composition of the APC 2027 Presidential Campaign Council because of anomalies that could send the wrong signals.

It was reported that the council will be chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu while Vise President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, will serve as Vise Chairmen I and II respectively. Former governor of Zamfara State, Senator Abdulaziz Yari will serve as Director-General and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, will serve as Secretary of the council.

However, the list has been criticized by some political actors who claim it is filled with individuals of dubious reputation.

Sources told Daily Trust that issues raised about the composition of the council include the inclusion of those many feel shouldn’t be there because of corruption charges, the exclusion of those who should have been included because of their experience and the omission of names due to human error.

Sources also confirmed that the inauguration date of the council has not been announced as the list of members needs to be fine tuned.

But there are indications the review will not affect the DG and secretary of the council.

A very reliable source in the presidency also told the aforementioned publication that the leadership of the council would remain intact while it is only the composition of the membership that would be adjusted to remove some names and bring in some others.

“We are doing everything in the Villa, but we are aware that the list is being reviewed in view of the concerns raised over the inclusion of names of some people that are not supposed to be there and the exclusion of those that would add value to the campaign.

He said that was to be expected in politics as there were many interests involved.

It was learnt that the list was flawed by serious defects, among which were the inclusion of names of those with alleged corruption cases; those who should ordinarily have been included by virtue of their experience but were omitted; and those omitted by mere oversight.

Such reviews are not new, said a source who served in the last campaign council. He said that for the 2023 elections, the first list of members sent was recalled and fine-tuned on similar observations before inauguration.

Ya’u Raises Alarm Over Fictitious Agencies, Warns Of Fake Governors And States

The discovery of a second suspected fake government agency operating within the structure of Nigeria’s federal government has raised fresh concerns about the country’s oversight and accountability system.

The latest case concerns the National Brands Development and Made-in-Nigeria Special Project Office, said by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) to be an unauthorized organization allegedly operating from a government building in Abuja.

ICPC Chairman, Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, stated that the organization was purportedly promoted by George Buchi Nwabueze, who allegedly used different variations of his name. President Bola Tinubu, following a briefing by the ICPC, has ordered the arrest of Nwabueze and the suspension of three permanent secretaries in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

The latest discovery was during the commission’s investigation of the disputed Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC) allegedly promoted by Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew. The PFIPC was reported to have been operating from the Federal Secretariat for about two years before it was disowned by the Presidency as a fake.

Tinubu flags off reconstruction of Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode Road, approves Abeokuta-Ibadan dualization
The emergence of a further purported fake agency has now raised questions about how organizations with dubious government standing can function within or around official structures.

Governance expert and public commentator, Dr Joe Abah, said the problem could be more serious than the two cases currently attracting attention.

“Another day, another bogus agency. “There are all sorts of bodies that have offices in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Federal Secretariat,” Abah wrote on his official X handle.

Some of these organizations, he said, only need “a government-sounding name, a government-looking logo and an SGF address” to raise funds.

Abah said he had an experience in government where an organization kept inviting him and his staff on free foreign trips, under the guise of mentorship program. He became suspicious when its promoter could not clearly explain who founded the organization or how it was funded.

“The funny thing is that my civil servants, always keen on a foreign trip, never tried to persuade me. They knew probably already what I could only feel, as I was new then – that it was advanced 419. “The Office of the SGF must be fixed by somebody,” Abah added.

In an exclusive interview, the Vice-President of the Nigerian Political Science Association, Professor Murtala Muhammad, said it should not be seen as a case of people allegedly setting up fake organizations. At its heart, it’s a governance and institutional failure, not just a case of individual criminality,” he said.

“Where rules, verification mechanisms, enforcement and oversight are weak, private actors can appropriate the authority and legitimacy of the state,” he said.

Muhammad said the PFIPC case was a warning against the weakness of bureaucratic verification.

“The alleged creation of offices, fabrication of appointment documents and efforts to present the organization as a legitimate government institution reveals serious weaknesses in bureaucratic verification and institutional accountability,” he said.

He said the issue was also related to “entrenched poor governance, corruption, weak inter-agency coordination and inadequate accountability in the public service.”

“The revelation that the PFIPC tried to get a budgetary allocation of ₦1.3 billion is particularly troubling as it suggests that institutional weaknesses may extend to the fiscal structure of government,” Muhammad added.

Yet the political analyst said the response needed to be more than just arresting people. He called for better vetting of government agencies and appointments, improved information sharing and stronger budgetary controls.

“Fake agencies, therefore, do not emerge in a governance vacuum; they thrive where corruption, administrative weakness and inadequate accountability create the institutional space for their operation,” he said.

He also warned that the controversy could have political consequences for the Tinubu administration before the 2027 elections.

“If Nigerians believe that a non-existent agency could supposedly create offices, build networks across the country and infiltrate government processes undetected in good time, opposition parties will certainly latch on to the incident as evidence of administrative ineptitude, corruption or institutional capture,” he said.

The damage can still be contained if the government responds with transparency, evidence-based accountability and institutional reforms, he said.

Y. Z. Ya’u, Executive Director of the Center for Information Technology and Development (CITID) also described the development as a manifestation of deeper problems in the system.

“Why are Nigerians surprised that there are fake agencies in the federal government. “It is sheer naivety to expect anything more than this,” said Ya’u.

“We are going to have fake state with fake Governor and State Assembly getting allocation from federation account soon if we are not careful,” he warned.

Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has also called for a wider probe particularly given reports the latest group had coordinators in about 20 states and representatives in China and the US.

Who chose these coordinators? Who was responsible for those appointments? Who represented the organization and who did they talk to?” Dalung queried.

Meanwhile, Nwabueze, the promoter of the agency in question has dismissed the description of the Made-in-Nigeria project as a phantom or unauthorized government agency.

His management said the project was an approved public-private initiative anchored on Executive Orders 003 of 2017 and 005 of 2018.

“The Made in Nigeria Project has never operated as, nor claimed to be, a statutory civil service agency,” the statement said.

President Tinubu To Lead African Minerals Development Summit

Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to chair the Third High-Level Roundtable on Critical Minerals Development in Africa, as the continent intensifies efforts to move beyond exporting raw minerals and capture greater value from its mineral resources.

The Africa Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG) in a statement said the September 21, 2026 meeting in New York, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, will bring together African leaders, ministers, investors, development finance institutions and global industry players.

Under the theme, “From Resources to Wealth: Continental Cooperation for Mineral Value Addition,” the summit will focus on attracting investment, strengthening continental cooperation and developing competitive mineral value chains.

AMSG said Africa must invest in local processing, value addition and integrated mineral value chains to transform its vast mineral wealth into industrial and economic opportunities.

The group noted that Africa holds some of the world’s largest reserves of critical minerals, including lithium, copper, cobalt, graphite, manganese and rare earth elements, but much of these resources are still exported with limited local processing.

The meeting will also feature the unveiling of the Continental Integration and Economic Assurance Declaration (CIEAD), aimed at strengthening cooperation on mineral value addition, investment mobilisation, supply-chain security and policy coordination.

The proposed CIEAD Finance Window is expected to help mobilise capital for mineral processing, infrastructure and technology.

AMSG said Africa must seize the growing global demand for critical minerals to drive manufacturing, technology transfer, infrastructure development, job creation and sustainable economic growth.

The organisation stressed that the continent must move from being a supplier of raw materials to becoming an active architect of the global critical minerals economy.

Ukraine Celebrates 35 Years Of Independence, Rules Out Giving Up Territory

Ukraine wants peace but will not accept territorial concessions that amount to surrender, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Monday as the country marked its 35th Independence Day amid the continuing war with Russia.

Speaking in Kyiv, Zelenskiy said Ukraine remained committed to peace but would resist Russian demands for further territorial concessions. “Ukraine absolutely wants peace, but it’s not ready to simply surrender,” he said in a video posted on Telegram.

He warned against suggestions that giving up the remaining Ukrainian-held parts of the eastern Donbas region would bring the conflict to an end. “We will not let them (Russians) seize the initiative, deceive Europe and the entire world into thinking that we simply need to give up Donbas and everything will be over soon,” he said.

The comments came as foreign leaders and dignitaries joined Ukraine’s independence celebrations in Kyiv, including European Council President Antonio Costa and other officials. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham was also expected to co-chair a meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing”, a group of countries supporting Ukraine.

The war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, has killed hundreds of thousands of people and devastated large parts of Ukraine. Peace efforts led by the United States have stalled over disagreements on territorial concessions, while fighting continues along a roughly 1,200-kilometre frontline.

Russia’s battlefield advances have slowed this year, while Ukrainian forces have regained some territory in the southeast. However, Russian forces continue to threaten Kostiantynivka in Donetsk, part of the wider Donbas region.

Moscow has also intensified long-range air attacks on Ukrainian cities, while Ukraine has stepped up strikes against Russian refineries and logistics facilities in an effort to disrupt Moscow’s war effort.

Zelenskiy paid tribute to Ukrainian soldiers and civilians and urged allies to provide “everything” necessary to end the war. He also called for increased sanctions against Russia and renewed diplomatic pressure to bring Moscow to the negotiating table.

“China must no longer remain silent,” he said, while expressing hope that “all the contradictions and fears” held by the United States regarding Russia would eventually disappear.

Other officials attending the celebrations included Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, Moldovan President Maia Sandu and Estonian President Alar Karis, according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

Terem Moffi Leaves OGC Nice For Permanent Hamburg Transfer

Super Eagles striker Terem Moffi has completed a permanent transfer to Bundesliga club Hamburg from Ligue 1 side OGC Nice.

The Nigeria international joins Die Rothosen as their seventh signing of the summer transfer window as the German club continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.

Moffi, 27, has been handed the number nine shirt and will look to hit the ground running in the Bundesliga after embarking on a new chapter in his career.

“The coach was really convincing in our discussions. The location, with its fantastic fans, and the club’s overall direction also played a role in my decision,” Moffi told Hamburg’s official website.

“Even though HSV played in the second division for a few years, the club is still a big name, all over the world. When I told my father about the interest, he immediately knew which club I meant and was thrilled. For me, it was positively crazy. I’m all the happier now to be a part of the club’s history.”

Moffi, who has played club football in six different countries, arrives at Hamburg with vast experience and an impressive scoring record of 88 goals and 13 assists in 228 competitive appearances.

The striker said he looks forward to contributing more than goals to his new team.

“As a striker, I naturally love scoring goals, but I also love working for the team and keeping the whole group together. I’m the new guy in the team right now, which is always a bit strange at first, but I’m really looking forward to getting to know everyone and getting started together soon,” he added.

Hamburg board member Kathleen Krüger believes the Nigerian forward will give the club greater depth and quality in attack.

“Terem is an excellent fit for our approach. His signing gives us even more depth and versatility in the center-forward position, thereby increasing our overall quality. His career path so far brings extensive experience at a high international level, which he can also pass on to our young talents. We are delighted to have Terem at HSV and extend a warm welcome to him,” Krüger said.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has approved the appointment of the Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Mohammed Matawalle, as Deputy Director, Security and Intelligence 1 of the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2027 Presidential Campaign Council.

The appointment is part of the council’s wider structure established to coordinate the party’s preparations and engagements ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry, Dr Bello Mohammed Matawalle, is expected to support security coordination for campaign activities, including risk assessment, intelligence coordination and engagement with relevant security agencies and stakeholders.

The appointment also assigns him responsibilities relating to the security architecture for campaign activities, with the stated objective of supporting the safety of candidates, campaign officials and supporters during political engagements.

The Ministry said Matawalle’s experience as a former Governor of Zamfara State and serving Minister of State for Defence informed his selection for the security and intelligence role.

Reacting to the appointment, Matawalle expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and the APC leadership for the confidence placed in him, pledging to apply his experience to support a peaceful and coordinated campaign.

The appointment places a serving defence minister in a political campaign security role while he continues his responsibilities within the Federal Ministry of Defence.

Lake Chad Basin Chair Urges Stronger MNJTF Presence With More Troops

The Chairman of the Lake Chad Basin Commission Governors’ Forum and Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has pledged maximum political support for the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), while urging accelerated deployment of troops to islands across the Lake Chad Basin.

Governor Buni made the pledge during a security briefing at MNJTF Headquarters on the sidelines of the Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum in N’Djamena, Chad.

While the MNJTF had contributed to the visible improvement of security across the basin, further gains are needed to enable development and commercial activities to thrive, the Governor said, in a statement by the Acting Chief Military Public Information Officer, Lt. Col. Iweha Onyenonachi.

He specifically called for troops to be deployed to islands in Nigerian and other national territories around the Lake Chad Basin, urging the MNJTF to speed up efforts to establish a stronger security presence in the area.

Governor Buni also revealed that talks are ongoing with Niger political authorities on the country’s possible return to the MNJTF.

He warned that the vacuum created by the absence of Nigerien forces had created a porous space that terrorists could exploit for movement, temporary refuge and cross-border criminal activity before launching attacks elsewhere.

The Governor commended President Bola Tinubu, on behalf of the troop-contributing countries, for financing Operation LAKE SANITY III, a move which he said demonstrated the Nigerian Government’s commitment to improving security and creating the conditions for more socio-economic activity in the basin.

He said he would brief the President on areas that require further intervention upon his return to Nigeria.

Governor Buni also promised to rally political support for continued operations of the MNJTF and efforts to tackle Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) activities across the Lake Chad Basin.
