Lagos residents bet to make hoax calls to emergency services – LASEMA sources

0

There have been growing concerns about a significant rise in false calls to emergency services by residents in Lagos State.

According to Metro however learnt that some residents are making hoax calls because of bets placed among themselves.

Sources in the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services who spoke to our correspondent on Saturday disclosed that some individuals often edged a bet to confirm if they would respond or not.

The development was said to have seriously disrupted the operations of the agencies.

One of the sources who craved anonymity as he was not permitted to speak on the matter said the cases of betting were discovered during findings made by the agencies to determine the factors associated with hoax calls.

“We have experienced an increase in false calls made to our offices and it was on this note that we discovered that some of the calls were made for different reasons, but the most surprising of them were cases of individuals making false calls after betting between themselves on whether we would respond or not.”

Another source who claimed to have experienced this alongside his team of emergency responders said it occurred three times.

“I have experienced this three times and we met the culprits during one of the encounters. When we got there the very day, we called them and they picked up. They later came out and told us that they had bet within themselves and they thought whether we would come or not. We could not do anything because the environment was very volatile,” he explained.

In April 2023, a Lagos magistrates court in Ikeja convicted a teenager, Uzuokwu Solomon, for making a false emergency call to the fire service.

The spokesperson for LASEMA, Nosa Okunbor, could not be reached as calls made to his phone were not responded to. A text message sent to him had yet to be responded to.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the LSFRS, Amodu Shakiru, said hoax calls recorded as a result of betting could not be ruled out.

He said, “With the advent of sports betting, it cannot be ruled out because the false call is not abating even after we made examples of false callers being prosecuted. We feel it ought to have reduced but appears to be on a steady rise, so we cannot rule out the possibility of making false calls on game betting.”

He added that the hoax callers were not always available at the address where the incident was said to have occurred.

He said, “You don’t even get to see them, you can’t even identify them when you get to the spot. The few ones we have been able to apprehend among those making hoax calls, we had to work with the police before apprehending them. For example, when you get to the location, it is either an address found but no cases of fire incident or an untraceable address. And in such an instance, if you call back the caller, it is either they are not picking up their calls or the line is switched off.

“We are making efforts to correct them and that is to enforce laws. It is also a criminal law by the Criminal Code of the country. When the Lagos State Government promulgated the law in 2012, it was all about how we enforce this because some of the calls are from third parties and because we don’t want to deter them from calling for help on behalf of someone else.

“So, by the time we start to prosecute everybody, it will also affect them and they may be discouraged to continue doing that for those in need of help in emergency cases,” he added.

Oyo mob beats soldier over alleged killing of NSCDC officer

0

A soldier identified as Abubakar has allegedly killed a Nigerian Civil and Security Defence Corps officer, Olapade Segun.

Abubakar and Segun were said to have met at a nightclub in the Bodija area of Oyo State on Friday.

According to Metro gathered on Sunday that a heated altercation ensued between the two security agents, which led Abubakar to bring out his dagger.

According to sources privy to the matter, who pleaded anonymity, Abubakar stabbed Segun and he died as a result of the blood lost through the incident.

A source told our correspondent that a mob angered by the incident beat up the soldier after he tried to escape from the scene.

“A soldier called Abubakar and an NSCDC official had a heated altercation at a nightclub in the Bodija area of Ibadan. The soldier, who was angered by the situation, brought out his dagger and stabbed the NSCDC officer. He died as a result of the blood he lost. The soldier wanted to run from the scene but the angry crowd got hold of him and beat him to a pulp. It took the arrival of his colleagues who dispersed the crowd before he was freed,” the source said.

Another source said some senior officers of the Nigerian Army have been visiting the state command of the NSCDC to investigate the matter.

“I learnt the Army has set up a panel to investigate the matter because some senior officers of the service have been visiting the state command concerning the incident.”

Efforts to get the Director of Nigerian Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, on Sunday evening were futile.

A call to his number indicated it was switched off. He had yet to respond to a message sent to him as of the time of filing this report.

His NSCDC counterpart, Babawale Afolabi, did not pick up several calls to his line and has yet to respond to messages sent to him on the matter.

Officers assaulting Imo man in viral video to face probe

0

The Imo State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video showing some officers in a violent confrontation with a man.

The incident was said to have occurred on September 16, 2024, during an arrest warrant execution for 32-year-old Prince Amaechi over alleged drug trafficking.

The video shows the officers pinning Amaechi to the ground and handcuffing him while he carried a child.  His wife who recorded the incident however called for help in the process.

Reacting to the incident in a press statement seen by According to Metro on Sunday, the spokesperson for the command, Henry Okoye, said four Anti-Narcotics Unit operatives were involved in the incident.

He identified them as Sergeant Patrick Nwangbo, Corporal Godswill Okechukwu, Corporal Justice Nnorom, and Corporal Goodluck Iwuagwu.

According to Okoye, the police command condemned the officers’ actions, describing them as unprofessional.

He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, had ordered the case transferred to the IGP X-Squad, Imo State Command, for a thorough investigation.

The statement partly reads: “The Imo State Police Command is aware of the recent video circulating on social media depicting a confrontation during the arrest of a young man and wants to assure the public that the command takes such matters seriously and is committed to maintaining law and order in the state.

“In response to the video, four operatives of the command’s Anti-Narcotics Unit, namely, Sgt Patrick Nwangbo, Cpl God’swill Okechukwu, Cpl Justice Nnorom and Cpl Goodluck Iwuagwu, embarked on an operation at Ovoro-Uzomiri Umuosu, Naze in Owerri North LGA of Imo State, on 16/09/2024 to execute an arrest warrant for a young man named, Prince Amaechi ( m) 32 years linked to a case of conspiracy and drug trafficking, based on the confession of previously arrested suspects named: Ijeoma Ezealamba, ‘f’, Ebenezer Chukwuka, ‘m’.

“During the operation, the suspect resisted arrest, leading to the escalation captured in the video.

“The command condemns the actions of the operatives, emphasising that the situation should have been handled with greater discretion and professionalism.

“The operatives involved have been apprehended for interrogation, and the Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the IGP X-Squad Imo State Command for thorough investigation.

“Additionally, the officers will face an orderly room trial pending the outcome of the investigation.

“The command urges the public to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation while we conduct an investigation.”

The PPRO said the Imo State Police Command was dedicated to transparency and would provide updates as appropriate to keep the members of the public informed.

Kano Anglican women donate foodstuff to inmates

0

The Kano Anglican Church Women’s wing has donated foodstuff and other items to the inmates of the Goron Dutse Medium Security Custodial Centre in the state.

The gifts comprising foodstuff, toiletries, clothing buckets and different types of seasoning were presented to them when a delegation from the church visited the custodial centre to support the inmates and promote their welfare.

Presenting the items on Saturday, the Chairperson, All Anglican Women, Mrs Edna Ezike, said the gesture was their little way of supporting the inmates in the facility.

Mrs Ezike urged the inmates to see their incarceration as an opportunity for self-reflection and change and to be good ambassadors after their release.

She urged the inmates not to go back to their old ways and imbibe the fear of God in their hearts, as well as take advantage of the rehabilitation and reintegration programmes in the centre to enable them to acquire life-changing skills and behaviours.

“Endeavour to utilise the skills acquired from the centre. We want to assure you that we are interested in your well-being. These items are donated to help add value to your standard of living.

“We have been visiting prisons for the last three years to encourage and support inmates in our little ways, as well as offer them advice,” she said.

The chairperson called on parents, guardians and the general public to train their children and wards in the way of the Lord, rather than mislead them.

She said the prison was not a good place to be, especially for the youths, who are the future leaders and pillars of their various families.

She called on philanthropists to visit the inmates regularly, support and provide them with provisions to make them feel loved.

Receiving the items on behalf of the management, a staff member of the correctional centre, who pleaded not to be named, described the gesture as timely and well-intended.

“This gesture is well-appreciated by us as these items will greatly improve the welfare of the inmates in this facility. We thank you immensely.’

Manager suspended for dragging attendants to herbalist over alleged theft

0

The management of  Bovas and Company Limited has suspended one of its managers in Ibadan, Oyo State, for taking some petrol station attendants to a herbalist over an alleged theft incident.

This was disclosed in a statement on the company’s Facebook page on Sunday.

The suspension followed a viral video showing some persons, suspected to be staff members of the organisation, gathered in a room and being made to swear over the alleged theft of the company’s money by a suspected herbalist.

The video also shows a man, claiming to be the manager, narrating to the herbalist how the money had gone missing, while a voice in the background is heard saying they are staff members of Bovas.

Reacting to the video in a statement, Bovas condemned the actions of the yet-to-be-identified manager, describing them as unprofessional.

The statement noted that the manager had been suspended, and an internal investigation had begun into the matter.

It read, “It has come to our attention that an unfortunate incident involving one of our station managers has surfaced on social media. “Upon becoming aware of this incident, we have immediately suspended the station manager and begun a thorough internal investigation. We want to assure the public that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken, in line with our company policies and the laws of Nigeria.”

The company stressed that it was committed to maintaining ethical standards in its operations across all its stations.

“We, at Bovas and Company Limited, value our employees’ safety and our customers’ trust and loyalty, and we will continue to uphold the principles that have made us a leading and reliable name in the downstream oil and gas sector.”

80-year-old man arrested with cannabis in Lagos

0

An 80-year-old grandfather,  Pa Aremu Shojobi, has been arrested by the operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency with 14 kilograms of cannabis.

Shojobi confessed to having been selling illicit drugs in the last 25 years, according to a statement on Sunday by the agency’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi.

The agency stated that the suspect got the drugs from Benin Republic.

Babafemi said, “Operatives of the Lagos State Strategic Command of the Agency on Friday, September 20, arrested an 80-year-old grandfather, Pa Aremu Shojobi, with 14 kilograms of cannabis at his home in the Iyana Ipaja area of the state. In his statement, the octogenarian claimed he had been in the business of selling illicit drugs for 25 years. He further claimed he got his supplies from the Benin Republic and sold to his customers from his residence between 7 am and 10 pm every day.”

Babafemi also said a total of 25,000,000.00 pills of tapentadol, an opioid three times stronger than tramadol and 350,000 bottles of codeine-based syrup, were recovered at the Tin Can port complex in Lagos.

He added that the seizures were made on September 17 and 20, 2024, from three containers that had been on the watchlist of the agency following processed intelligence.

“As a result, the NDLEA requested 100% joint examination of the shipments with men of the Nigeria Customs Service and other security agencies. The 25 million pills of tapentadol have an estimated street value of N13,725,000,000.00 while the codeine consignment has an estimated street value of N2,450,000,000.00,  bringing the total value of the seizures to N16,175,000,000.00.

“The tapentadol consignment packed in 500 cartons was discovered in one of the containers on Tuesday, September 17, while another container examined the same day contained 175,000 bottles of Barcadin cough syrup with codeine packed in 875 cartons. The third container containing 175,000 bottles of CSC cough syrup with codeine was examined on Friday, September 20,” the statement added.

Similarly, Babafemi said the NDLEA operatives in Lagos on September 18 raided the two homes of a community leader and Sarkin Yamma of Badagry West LCDA, Alhaji Bashir Mohammed Talba, where 226kg of cannabis was recovered from his two wives and son.

He added that though Alhaji Talba is currently at large, a search of his house in the Ashipa area of Seme Badagry led to the recovery of 93 compressed blocks of cannabis sativa weighing 57.6kg from his first wife, Asma’u Bashiru, 35, and son, Sadat Bashiru, 22, while another search of his house at the Aketegbo area of Seme Badagry led to the seizure of 302 compressed blocks of cannabis weighing 168.6kg from his second wife, Hauwa Bashir, 42.

“No less than 720 blocks of Arizona, a strain of cannabis weighing 390kg, were also recovered from a Mitsubishi delivery van marked MUS 720 XH at the Ojo area of Lagos on Monday, September 16,” he added.

At the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, Babafemi said the NDLEA operatives on September 15 arrested a 38-year-old drug mule, Okafor Ifeanyi Anthony, while attempting to board a Qatar Airlines flight to Iran via Doha with 76 wraps of cocaine in his stomach.

“After three days of excretion observation, Okafor excreted the 76 pellets of the ingested cocaine weighing 1.267kg.

In Kogi State, the NDLEA officers on patrol along the Okene-Lokoja-Abuja Expressway on Tuesday, September 17, recovered 700,000 pills of exol-5 coming from Lagos for distribution in Kano and Kaduna states, while a suspect, Udemefuna Chibuike, 23, was arrested by operatives on Friday, September 20, along the Mokwa-Jebba Road, Niger State, in possession of 49,000 tablets of tramadol, 20,000 tablets of diazepam, 100 ampoules of tramadol injection and 50 bottles of cough syrup with codeine,” Babafemi added.

The statement continued, “A total of 451 blocks of cannabis weighing 213kg were intercepted along the Azikiwe Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Wednesday, September 18, by the NDLEA officers who apprehended a suspect, Ogochukwu Paul, 33, conveying the consignment to a notorious drug haven in Borikiri.

“While operatives in Plateau State on Friday, September 20, arrested a wanted suspect, Jonathan Ali Abuttur, 46, at the Agingi-Rukuba Road, Bassa LGA, in possession of 808kg of cannabis sativa concealed in 68 bags of sugar and fertiliser, their counterparts in Kwara State also nabbed Shaibu Musa with 28kg of the same psychoactive substance.”

Ogun notorious armed robbers nabbed in Lagos

0

Three suspected robbers terrorising the Ejirin community in the Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area of Ogun State have been arrested at their hideout in Lagos State.

According to Metro gathered from the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, on Sunday that their arrest followed the apprehension of one member of the syndicate, who had gone to rob the Cele Ejirin community.

Odutola said upon the arrest and interrogation of the first suspect, identified as Qudri Yusuf, he led police operatives to their hideout in the Idioro area of Mushin, Lagos State, where two other members of the syndicate were arrested.

She identified the two suspected members of the syndicate as Bolaji Zutan and Oladimeji Yusuf.

The PPRO said, “On 18/09/2024, following the confessional statement of an armed robbery suspect, one Qudri Yusuf, M, 30, who had gone to rob a resident at Cele Ejirin Road in Ijebu-Ode on 10/09/2024, he led the team of detectives to their criminal hideout at Idioro, Mushin, Lagos, where two other members of the armed robbery gang, one Bolaji Zutan, M, 19, and one Oladimeji Yusuf, M, 30, were arrested.”

She added that exhibits, including cutlasses, were recovered from the suspects while stressing that efforts were ongoing to arrest other fleeing members of the syndicate.

“Exhibits recovered from them include four cutlasses. Efforts are ongoing to arrest other fleeing suspects and possibly recover the stolen items,” Odutola concluded.

According to Metro reported on August 2 that two suspected Aiye Confraternity members, known as Adisa Abiodun and Rasheed Makinde, were arrested for allegedly participating in a robbery attack on Hommies Hotel in the Ijoko community of the Ado-Odo-Ota Local Government Area of the state.

Our correspondent learnt that the suspects had previously participated in raping a 25-year-old female staff member (name withheld), who worked at the lounge and bar during the attack on the hotel.

A police operative involved in the arrest, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak for the command, had said that the suspects were a thorn in the flesh of the residents, wreaking terror and mayhem on the community.

Ogun traders blame rising cost of goods for low patronage

0

Some traders in the Mowe and Ibafo areas of Ogun State have expressed sadness over the decline in patronage by customers, which they claimed was occasioned by the high cost of goods and commodities.

They stressed that the situation had also brought losses to their business.

The traders who spoke with According to Metro in separate interviews on Sunday lamented that the hardship in the country, occasioned by the high inflation, had taken a toll on their business.

A trader who identified herself simply as Ruth noted that the recurring changes in the prices of commodities had led to a decline in the purchasing power of consumers.

She added that the decline in the purchase of goods had led to a reduction in sales and adversely affected her business.

“Before the fuel price hike, we sold spaghetti for N900, but now, it is between N1,000 and N1,050. Products like Milo, which a roll cost N1,500, now sells for N1,700. The price changes come directly from the suppliers, and it has affected sales.

“People were buying more before the prices went up, but now sales have slowed down, and the turnover of customers is low,” Ruth said.

A fish seller, Mrs Azeezat Aminu, corroborated the claims that the high prices of commodities had led to a decline in sales because consumers could no longer afford lavish buying.

“Before everything became expensive and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu became the President, I used to buy a carton of fish for N6,800. Now, it costs N43,800.

“The expenses are too much, and things are much more expensive. My customers used to buy from me often, but now it’s different. I used to roast eight to 10 cartons of fish, but now, I only do one or two cartons.”

Stressing the impact of the decline in sales, a grocery trader, Mrs Sola Akinwunmi, said the decline led to some of her goods becoming expired, resulting in huge losses.

She said it was the intervention of the product manufacturer that saved her from the huge loss she incurred.

In her words, “I once had a product that expired, but I called the distributor, and they came to exchange it for a new one.”

When contacted for a reaction, the Chief Press Secretary to the Ogun Governor, Lekan Adeniran, promised to get back to our correspondent but was yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

Transformer vandalism blamed on Ikeja Electric’s negligence

0

Residents of The Exclusives Community Development Association, Teachers’ Quarters, Selewu, Igbogbo, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, have blamed the vandalisation of their electricity distribution transformer on the alleged negligence and refusal of Ikeja Electric to energise the transformer five months after the completion of its installation.

The residents, who spoke to our correspondent during a peaceful protest held at the Igbogbo Undertaking office of Ikeja Electric on Friday, lamented that the DisCo’s negligence led to the stealing of the transformer’s cables by vandals.

According to members of the community, the transformer was facilitated to the community by the senator representing the Lagos East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Adetokunbo Abiru, after several failed appeals to the Ikeja Electric to provide a relief transformer to ease the load on their existing transformer.

Speaking to According to Metro, the Chairman of The Exclusives CDA, Akintunde Arowolo, said, “After several failed appeals to the Ikeja Electric to give us a relief transformer, we ran to our senator, who then facilitated one. The transformer was brought to our community on March 15, 2024, and the contractor assigned by Senator Abiru completed the installation of the transformer on April 21, 2024.”

Arowolo added that the necessary tests were carried out on the transformer, and it was “certified okay.”

“Since the installation was completed, we started writing letters to Ikeja Electric and visiting their undertaking office in Igbogbo requesting that the transformer be energised immediately to prevent vandals from vandalising it. But all our requests were ignored.

“At one point, they told us that the transformer needed a DT meter to measure energy consumption accurately, and they were to provide the meter. We continued to follow up with them, but they still continued to ignore our requests,” the CDA chairman claimed.

He noted that what triggered the protest was that “we woke up today, Friday, September 20, 2024, to discover that the transformer has been vandalised and its cables carted away by the vandals. If Ikeja Electric had energised the transformer, those vandals would not have been able to access it easily.”

The CDA General Secretary, Babatunde Sogbetun, also told our correspondent that the community had hired night guards to watch over the transformer in order to protect it from vandals. He added that the community disengaged the night guards after a few months having realised that they could no longer pay the huge salaries the guards were receiving.

“Ikeja Electric was aware of what we did on our part to protect the transformer,” Sogbetun said, adding, “We told them in the letters that we wrote to them that we would not be able to sustain funding the security of the transformer for too long.”

“Unfortunately, it is the customers that will get transformers, poles, cables, and so on with which Ikeja Electric generates revenue, and it is still the same customers that will spend their hard-earned money to secure the equipment. What kind of country are we living in?

“This particular incident was preventable if Ikeja Electric had heeded our cry and energised the transformer. We are holding them responsible for the vandalisation of the transformer,” the CDA scribe added.

The immediate-past chairman of the CDA, Akinpelu Atoyebi, wondered why customers would “always have to go through hell before the DisCo will attend to their complaints.”

He said, “This nonchalant attitude of Ikeja Electric has cost us a lot in our community. I cannot count the number of poles that we have changed by ourselves. I have lost count of the cables that we bought. In fact, there is nothing in our community today that Ikeja Electric provided for us; we bought and still buy everything we use with our own money.

“They didn’t give us a transformer, and we went to the source for one by ourselves. It was the same case with the one we’re currently using. To now energise it, they want us to bribe them. Ikeja Electric is known for wanting to reap where they have not sown. We’re saying enough is enough.”

The community, in a letter addressed to the CEO of Ikeja Electric, Folake Soetan, and sighted by our correspondent, demanded that the DisCo “must, as a matter of urgency, replace the vandalised cables” and “immediately and unconditionally provide the needed DT meter.”

They also demanded that Ikeja Electric has “till the end of this month, September, to energise the transformer,” stressing that “until the above demands are met, we shall not allow your staff in our community for any revenue drive.”

Attempts to contact Ikeja Electric’s spokesperson, Olufadeke Omo-Omorodion, were unsuccessful. Her mobile phone was unreachable, and a message sent to her WhatsApp remained unanswered as of the time of filing this report.

How Okpebholo navigated the ‘bumpy’ road to Osadebe House

0

For the All Progressives Congress candidate in the Edo State governorship election, Monday Okpebholo, the journey was fraught with anxiety. However, he ultimately had all the elements aligned in his favour, enabling him to realise his dream of becoming the next occupant of the Osadebe House, writes ’LAOLU AFOLABI

The Independent National Electoral Commission held the highly anticipated governorship election in Edo State on Saturday. In the lead-up to the election, the atmosphere was charged with tension, largely due to the heated exchanges and threats exchanged between the competing political parties. To ensure a smooth electoral process, more than 43,000 policemen, along with various other security personnel, were deployed across the state by Friday.

Despite the palpable anxiety and the potential for unrest, the election unfolded with relative peace. Voters participated in the process, demonstrating their civic duty amid concerns about political antics and interference. While the election was not entirely free from the usual manoeuvring characteristic of political contests, it proceeded without the widespread violence that had been feared.

At the end of the exercise, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Monday Okpebholo, polled 291,667 votes to defeat his closest rival and the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who garnered 247,274 votes. The third force, the Labour Party, did not spring the much-expected surprise as its candidate, Olumide Akpata, managed to get a scanty 22,763 votes.

The election was keenly contested. It was initially a three-horse race, but it eventually ended in a two-horse contest. It was battle royale between the PDP and the APC. The contest was intense and fierce and a battle of supremacy between two titans, a former governor, Adams Oshiomhole and the incumbent. Godwin Obaseki.

There had been agitation over zoning as the Edo Central desired to produce Obaseki’s successor at the Dennis Osadebe Government House in Benin City. Since the commencement of the democratic dispensation, Edo South has had their chances two times with Lucky Igbinedion and now Obaseki, both governing the state for 16 years. Edo North had its opportunity through the eight-year term of Oshiomhole. Edo Central had a brief stint at the Government House with Prof Oserheimen Osunbor between 2007 and 2008 before he was ousted by Oshiomhole through the courts.

The journey to Saturday’s election had a dint of suspense, fear and anxiety for all stakeholders and party leadership. All the major political parties, the PDP, APC and Labour Party, had issues with the primary elections that produced their candidates. The parties, however, sorted all the legal and internal encumbrances before the election, though with attendant consequences and bandwagon effects, with only the APC left with a mild scar.

The Edo APC primary election was conducted on February 17, 2024 amid a crisis. The Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, led a seven-man committee to oversee the primary. It, however, became controversial. Ahead of the exercise, a frontline governorship aspirant and former candidate of the party in the 2020 election against Obaseki, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, stepped down.

After the exercise, three “candidates” emerged. A member of the House of Representatives, Dennis Idahosa, was declared the winner by the Uzodimma committee, having polled 40,453 votes. Another aspirant, Monday Okpebholo, was returned by the Chief Returning Officer, Dr Stanley Ogboaja. Furthermore, the spokesman of the Local Government Returning Officers, Ojo Babatunde, declared Anamero Dekeri as another governorship candidate of the party.

This forced the party to summon an emergency meeting, where the February 17 exercise was declared inconclusive. Also, some of the aspirants petitioned President Bola Tinubu, blaming Oshiomhole for alleged high-handedness. Some other party chieftains, including a former governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, blamed the former governor for causing a crisis in the party as he did in the build-up to the 2020 election.

The President would, however, not blame Oshiomhole as he summoned stakeholders and called for fair play. After the meeting, Oshiomhole spoke, claiming that the President was not for zoning but a fair poll. He gave the example of Kogi State, where a kinsman of the immediate-past governor took over the reins of leadership.

The party constituted another committee headed by the Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, to re-conduct the exercise February 22, 2024. At the rescheduled exercise, Okpebholo defeated other aspirants to emerge the party’s candidate. Following the announcement, Idahosa approached the court, protesting the result of the exercise. Oshiomhole also maintained a distance.

The party was, however, determined to foster peace. The President intervened by summoning the meeting of the stakeholders from the state and the national leadership of the party to Abuja for March 18. At the meeting, Oshiomhole, Okpebholo, Idahosa, Matthew Urhogide and other party chieftains were present. The national leadership of the party, led by its national chairman, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, was also present. It was agreed at the meeting that Idahosa be nominated as the running mate to Okpebholo, as the President asked him to withdraw his protest litigation. A visibly elated President asked Oshiomhole after the meeting, “Adams, are we doing well? You sure?” to which he replied, “Yes sir, we are good to go.”

Following the reconciliation move, the party leaders met at Oshiomhole’s house on April 3, 2024, to resolve whatever lingering internal crisis trailing the primary. Both Okpebholo and Idahosa were at the meeting. Addressing the meeting, Oshiomhole declared that the post-primary crisis in the party had been resolved. The same day, the party received eight former Local Government Areas chairmen and members of the PDP into its fold at the former governor’s residence.

By July 5, during another meeting with the President, Oshiomhole had taken the leadership of the campaign for Okpebholo, as he led the candidates and other party leaders, alongside the Minister of Niger Delta Development, Abubakar Momoh, to a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa.

Another crisis well managed by the party was the return of the Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, to the APC. Shaibu had indicated interest in succeeding Obaseki and in a bid to achieve his ambition, he fell out with his principal. He participated in the PDP primary conducted in February and emerged winner in a parallel exercise. He was then impeached as the deputy governor by the state House of Assembly in April.

Following his impeachment, he vowed to ensure the candidate of the PDP, Asue Ighodalo, did not win the election. He returned to the APC July 20 and was well-received by the party leadership in the state and nationally. His impeachment was overturned by the High Court on July 17 and the Appeal Court on August 20.

In politics, there’s no permanent friend or enemy, so goes a saying. This played out as Philip reconciled with Oshiomhole and they both worked for the election, campaigning everywhere for Okpebholo’s victory.

For the PDP, Ighodalo emerged as its candidate for the 2024 Edo State governorship election on February 22. However, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja nullified the primary on the ground that 378 delegates who were to vote during the exercise were unlawfully denied their rights to vote.  Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on July 4 declared the exercise, which produced Ighodalo as its governorship candidate, invalid.

The judgment was for the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/165/2024, brought by aggrieved delegates, notably Kelvin Mohammed, in a representative capacity.

On August 26, the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja set aside a judgment delivered by Justice Ekwo and in agreement with the submission of the PDP, who had appealed the ruling of the lower court in a 25-ground appeal, the court argued that the issue of primary is an internal matter within the political party and, as such, outside the jurisdiction of any court. It declared that a primary election is an internal affair of any political party; hence the plaintiff’s grievances cannot be entertained by any court, as they are not contesting political office but selected to only participate in the selection of a candidate for the party.

The PDP’s candidate faced another hurdle as the embattled deputy governor took him to court, seeking the nullity of the primary that produced him. To his relief, on May 27, a Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed the lawsuit brought by Shaibu. Justice James Omotosho stated that Shaibu did not have the legal standing to challenge the outcome of the primary, because he did not fully participate in it and was not present at the venue on the day it took place. Omotosho further ruled that Shaibu’s lawsuit was premature as he failed to exhaust the internal dispute resolution mechanism within the PDP before resorting to court.

In the build-up to the election, the Labour Party, which had made waves in the state during the 2023 presidential election, also had its share of crisis. The party, under the leadership of its now-embattled national chairman, Julius Abure, produced a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olumide Akpata, as its standard-bearer. The factional national chairman of the party at the time, Lamidi Apapa, announced the conduct of a parallel governorship primary and named Anderson Asemota as its candidate and Monday Mawah as his running mate. Not done, a United Kingdom-based legal practitioner, Hilton Idahosa, also announced himself as the party’s third factional governorship candidate under the Apapa faction. Following the recognition of the Abure faction by the Independent National Electoral Commission, Akpata was formally named the party’s candidate.

Akpata’s emergence was against the run of play. The two leading parties had settled for their candidates from the Edo Central Senatorial District. The LP settled for a candidate from the Edo South Senatorial District, where the incumbent governor comes from.

He also had his legal battles. After the primary, a chieftain of the party, Kenneth Imasuagbon, took Akpata and the party to court. A Federal High Court sitting in Benin presided over by Justice Babatunde Quadri, however, ruled on the candidacy tussle, giving a clean bill to Akpata. The Apapa faction also took the party to court to challenge Akpata’s candidacy and, on September 11, 2024, the Appeal Court dismissed the suit and upheld the candidate of Akpata as the LP governorship candidate.

The whole electioneering for the election focused on Obaseki and Oshiomhole. The election was to settle scores between the duo. Oshiomhole had singlehandedly nominated Obaseki to succeed him and, against the advice of party chieftains, he had stuck his ground, convincing the national leadership of the party that Obaseki was his choice. The relationship had become frosty towards the end of the first term and Oshiomhole, who was then the national chairman of the party, denied Obaseki the second-term ticket, a development that angered some governors of the ruling party and cost Oshiomhole his position.

Obaseki defected to the PDP alongside Shaibu, his deputy and trounced Oshiomhole and the APC candidate, Ize-Iyamu, in the 2020 election. Obaseki won the election standing on a tripod. One leg was the Dan Orbih leadership of the PDP, funded by some party governors, including the immediate-past governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike. The other leg was Shaibu and his political machines in Edo North. The third leg of the tripod was Obaseki and his stronghold in Edo South.

By the time the electioneering had become intense, Obaseki’s three legs of the tripod had been demobilised. He had lost his loyal deputy in Shaibu, whose effort curtailed Oshiomhole and his arsenal in the 2020 election in Edo North. Surprisingly, Obaseki had courted trouble with Orbih’s political structure of the PDP in Edo, which is in alliance with Wike. The group, which termed itself Legacy Group, was all out to decimate the Obaseki structure in the state. Obaseki was left with his lieutenants spread across the state, but not having the domineering and towering structure he had in 2020 to emplace his successor.

Another trouble for Obaseki was his sour relationship with the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II. The crisis, which had festered, was made obvious during the grand finale of the campaign as Obaseki led party leaders and chieftains, including governors and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to the Esama of Benin Kingdom, High Chief Gabriel Igbinedion. The APC campaign trail, led by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, however, paid homage to the Oba of Benin, in his palace.

Political pundits had predicted a three-horse race, with Ighodalo sticking it out with Okpebholo and Akpata for the seat. By Saturday afternoon, Akpata was seriously not in contention, as he failed to build on the Obidient wave in the 2023 election. To some members of the Obidient Movement, Akpata should not be a beneficiary of their struggle in 2023. They had preferred Kenneth Imasuagbon, who was part of the movement to elect Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last general election.

Okpebholo’s candidacy, despite early controversies, was solidified through strategic reconciliation efforts within the APC, with key endorsements from Oshiomhole and Shaibu and Tinubu’s efforts. On the other hand, the PDP, weakened by internal divisions and legal battles, struggled to mount a unified challenge. The Labour Party, despite its initial momentum from the 2023 elections, was unable to maintain its influence. Ultimately, the election reflected deeper political power struggles, particularly between Oshiomhole and Obaseki, as Edo’s political landscape shifted once again, with Okpebholo the beneficiary.
