APC Responds as Obasanjo, Kwankwaso, Obi, Duke ‘Strategize’ to Defeat Tinubu in 2027

0

The importance of a recent meeting between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and influential political leaders, like as Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and former Governor Donald Duke of Cross River State, has been minimized by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The gathering, which took place last week at Obasanjo’s home in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has stoked rumors of a possible coalition to oppose President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 reelection campaign.

According to reports, the conversations centered on plans for the upcoming general election and Nigeria’s political destiny.

Although the specifics of the conversations are yet unknown, sources say they were a part of an attempt to present a unified front against the APC.

Kwankwaso was a prominent political figure in northern Nigeria and the New Nigeria People’s Party’s (NNPP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election.

“I was pleased to be in the company of my friend, His Excellency Donald Duke, and other associates to pay a courtesy call on former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his residence in Abeokuta,” Kwakwanso said on social media to confirm the meeting.

“The conversation was defined by discussions on important national issues, such as Nigeria’s political and governance future,” he continued. We appreciate Baba’s kind welcome, encouragement, and hospitality.

APC National Publicity Director Bala Ibrahim responded to the news by calling the meeting irrelevant.

Ibrahim claimed in his remarks on Sunday that President Tinubu still has a significant advantage over the opposition in terms of political influence and significance.

“With all due respect, I think highly of Obasanjo,” he stated. As a former President, ex-Head of State, and an elder statesman, I don’t want to take issues with him. However, Tinubu is not their mate when it comes to Nigerian politics, especially modern politics.

In Nigerian politics today, Tinubu is far superior than them. Therefore, Tinubu is not in danger from the combo of Obasanjo, Kwankwaso, Peter Obi, and Donald Duke, a classmate of mine. In the most recent election, these individuals were denigrated.

This is not the first time Obasanjo will support a cause and then defeat that cause. Recall that he backed Jonathan, the former president of Goodluck, who was defeated by Buhari. In the most recent election, Obasanjo backed Peter Obi once more, but Tinubu defeated them handily.

Therefore, they won’t pose a danger to the APC government and can hold long meetings until the end of time. Who among Duke, Obasanjo, Obi, and Kwankwaso was not defeated? It’s another matter entirely if they are bringing angels. However, if these identical spent forces come together, there can be no positive result from their meeting.

Shell, Partners sign FID on 300m barrels Bonga North Deep-water Project

A final investment decision (FID) for the deep-water project Bonga North off the coast of Nigeria has been announced by Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo), a division of Shell Plc.

In a statement released Monday from London, Shell made this announcement without mentioning the project’s cost.

The Bonga Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) complex, in which Shell has a 55 percent stake, will be connected to Bonga North by a subsea tie-back.

According to the statement, the Bonga North project entails installing new subsea hardware connected to the FPSO, modifying the current Bonga Main FPSO, and drilling, finishing, and starting up 16 wells—eight production and eight water injection wells.

The project will keep the Bonga facility producing gas and oil. With an estimated recoverable resource volume of over 300 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe), Bonga North is expected to attain a peak production of 110,000 barrels per day by the end of the decade. The first oil is expected to be produced.

In the release, Shell’s Integrated Gas and Upstream Director Zoë Yujnovich said, “This is another significant investment, which will help us to maintain stable liquids production from our advantaged Upstream portfolio.”

For the next ten years, Shell’s dominant Integrated Gas and Upstream division will continue to generate income thanks in part to Bonga North.

On behalf of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), SNEPCo, which holds a 55 percent stake, manages the Bonga field in collaboration with Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Ltd. (20 percent), Nigerian Agip Exploration Ltd. (12.5%), and TotalEnergies Exploration and Production Nigeria Ltd. (12.5%).

At sea depths of more than 1,000 meters, Bonga is a deep-water development situated in OML 118. The Bonga FPSO, which has a daily production capacity of 225,000 barrels, started production in 2005. In 2023, the project’s one-billionth barrel of crude oil was produced.

Over 300 million barrels of oil equivalent (boe) are expected to be recoverable resource volumes in the Bonga North development. According to the Petroleum Resources Management System of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, these volumes are presently categorized as 2P (proven and probable).

According to the International Oil Company (IOC), the above-mentioned recoverable resources and predicted peak output represent 100% of total gross statistics.

It insisted that the internal rate of return (IRR) from the investment in Bonga North was anticipated to be higher than the hurdle rate for Shell’s upstream operations.

Through near-field prospects like Bonga North, Shell’s Upstream division continues to create new performance standards by utilizing technical know-how, solid relationships, and a model based on simplification and replication.

Prices at independently operated filling stations, however, are still higher and vary by region, ranging from N1,115 to N1,120 per liter.

Stakeholders believe that more competitive fuel prices would soon result from local production from the Port Harcourt and Dangote refineries.

Dangote’s 650,000 barrels per day refinery, which started supplying goods to Nigerian and international markets, has joined production from the Port Harcourt refinery, which started in November.

Two alleged international scammers who specialize in fabricating diplomas from several African and international colleges have been taken into custody by Lagos State police.

Elvis Osakpolo Edokpain and Kelly Osas Endgieen, the suspects, are accused of specializing in online fraud against their gullible victims. With the money they have amassed, they have been able to purchase exotic cars and build homes across the nation.

Police sources in Zone 2, Onikan, Lagos, claim that after investigators at the zone’s Anti-Corruption Unit obtained reliable information from sources outside of Nigeria about a group of lads who specialize in forging foreign certifications, the tables turned against the accused.

After receiving the information, it was learned that Adegoke Fayoude, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the area, assigned a specific anti-corruption squad to look into it and issued instructions for them to be apprehended right away.

According to police sources, detectives stormed Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, on his orders. As soon as the suspects arrived, they were followed to the five-star Osapa-London hotel in Lekki, where they were later confronted at the bus stop as they attempted to flee the hotel.

It was discovered that during the check of their luggage, Kenny Osas’s student ID card from Academic City College and Elvis Osakpolo Edokpiain’s Blue Crest College, Ghana certificate were found.

After more investigation, a transcript of Elvis Osapolo’s Blue Crest University academic record was found.

During their additional search, detectives found a recommendation letter and a letter of English competency from the same Blue Crest College.

During questioning, the suspects provided the police with helpful testimonies and admitted that they were never admitted to the institution but obtained their degree diploma with the assistance of a female Nigerian living in Ghana.

Eno Withdraws from Minimum Wage Agreement with Labour

0

More than a week after reaching a deal with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to start paying the new minimum wage in December, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State abruptly backed out.

The governor established a new minimum salary of N80,000 for state employees, which is N10,000 more than the federal government-approved national rate of N70,000.
In contrast to Siminalayi Fubara, his counterpart from Rivers State, who authorized N85,000 as the new minimum salary and started paying in November, with October arrears to follow, Mr. Eno maintained that personnel verification is a prerequisite for the new minimum wage’s implementation.

He cited “Japa Syndrome”, a term used to describe the exodus of Nigerians for a better life abroad, as reason for his action. He had instead offered to pay 13th month salary to workers, apparently as a compensation.

Mr Eno, however, bowed to pressure from labour in the state over a week ago and signed an agreement with labour to commence payment in December with November arrears to come within the first quarter of next year.

Speaking at the State Christmas Carols in Uyo on Friday evening, Mr Eno backed out, insisting on completion of staff verification as a condition for commencement of payment, a move that may lead to a showdown with labour.

He, however, acknowledged the agreement but said he cannot be coerced into implementing it.

“We had a meeting with labour and at that meeting – tense meeting. We had made some agreements. They wanted the new minimum wage to start in November and I said to them that’s fine but we need to do verification. If they give me the verification today we will start paying in November.

“So we agreed. That is the agreement – agreement is agreement but tonight as your governor, we will pay the 13th month we have already calculated,” he said as the crowd went into a frenzy but their joy was only momentarily.
“I can see you’re happy. We are paying on the old structure,” the crowd went mute, apparently uncomfortable with the decision of the governor.

“But I also told them it is a give and take. If we start from November then the 13th month I had announced to cushion the effect will not hold.

“Because we would not start paying the new structure even though it starts from November we would not start paying until we finished (staff) verification,” he said, reneging on the agreement he signed with Labour in the state.

“Nobody will force me to do that. I must know the number of workers that are in the civil service in the state. And so Labour gives that to me tonight we start paying tomorrow.

“So don’t let anybody confuse you if they tell you to come and block Government House. Block it, work will still go on. You must understand that we must do the right thing,” he said.

He cautioned the Labour leaders, claiming to be on the verification committee, against postponing the exercise.

Sunny James, the state’s NLC chairperson, stated in an interview following the agreement’s signing that the advantages of enacting the new minimum wage greatly exceed the 13th month’s pay.

Mr. James emphasized that the governor has the authority to deal with the 13-month salary issue. “And from the consideration of NLC, it is very clear that 13 months’ salary for all junior staff does not meet N20,000, which you know is only basic (salary), and then the new minimum wage is not less than N55,000 for any junior staff, so we need our minimum wage,” he said.

Speaking on Saturday, Mr. James stated that labor and the governor had reached an arrangement whereby the new minimum wage will be paid starting this month, in December.

That is how the deal is written. I get that, but for people in Akwa Ibom, there has been a very real cold war between the State Government and labor since that day.

In response to the governor’s comments from last night, Mr. James informed this publication that labor will convene and determine the next course of action.

Ganduje Appoints Wike’s Ally, Tony Okocha, as APC Leader in Rivers

Chief Tony Okocha is the party’s leader in Rivers State, according to Abdullahi Ganduje, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, or APC.

Ganduje claims that the Rivers State APC leadership structure approved by the party’s national secretariat is the executive committee led by Okocha, a supporter of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike.

During the inauguration of the party’s newly elected state executive committee on Saturday in Port Harcourt, Ganduje made this statement.

In addition to congratulating the recently elected members, the APC national chairman gave an explanation for the party’s choice to host the inauguration in Rivers State rather than at the APC National Headquarters in Abuja.

He underlined that the action represents the party’s attempt to ensure that there is no separation between the state and national leadership structures.

As a fundamental component of their duties, Ganduje urged the state executive committee to give internal democracy top priority.

He also emphasized how crucial it is to promote inclusivity and unity within the party at the state level.

Ganduje remarked that the APC has made great strides in the South-South geographical zone, which has historically been controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, pointing to its hold on the states of Cross River and Edo.

He added that while the party continues its regional expansion efforts, Rivers State is its next strategic target.

Nigerian Army Dismantles 22 Lakurawa Camps in Sokoto and Kebbi, Recovers Arms

The Nigerian Army’s 8 Division troops, who were assigned to “Operation Fasan Gamma,” have demolished 22 Lakurawa terrorist camps in the states of Sokoto and Kebbi.

Along with neutralizing many terrorists, the troops also retrieved four weapons and 409 rounds of ammunition for PKT, 7.62mm, NATO, and 7.62mm special rounds.

Troops had conducted preparatory and shaping operations into the banditti enclaves and woodlands prior to the development.

Rumji Dutse, east of Sarma, Tusauna, Bauni, Malgatawa, Gargao, Tsauna, Mafara, Kaideji, Nakuru, Sama, Sanyinna, Kaididda, Kolo, and Dancha villages in the Illela, Tangaza, and Bingo local government areas of Sokoto State, are the forests where the forces confronted the terrorists.

Remember how General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defense Staff, sent a Special Operations Brigade to the states of Sokoto and Kebbi?

The deployment is intended to build on the accomplishments of the current preparatory operation, which is part of Operation Forest Sanity III and aims to eliminate the terrorists from Lakurawa.

Speaking to the troops, Brigadier General Ibikunle Ajose, the General Officer Commanding, 8 Division, Nigerian Army, and Commander, Sector 2 Operation Fasan Yamma, issued an order for the complete annihilation of the Lakurawa sect on behalf of Major General Oluyinka Soyele, the Theatre Commander, Operation Fasan Gamma.

He ordered the soldiers to safeguard law-abiding residents’ lives and property while adhering to the rules of engagement.

He claims that because the troops have been chosen and prepared for the task, Nigerians are relying on their professionalism and competence to drive out the Lakurawa.

He continued by saying, “The Brigade’s deployment will be an additional impetus in frustrating the bandits’ activities and restoring normalcy to the affected communities and North-West in general.”

CBN Penalizes Banks with N150m Fine for Illicit Naira Mint Transactions

0

By fining negligent Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) N150 million per branch, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has demonstrated its strong opposition to the illicit transfer of newly printed naira notes to currency hawkers and other dishonest individuals.

This is one of the steps being taken to stop the commercialization of Naira notes, which the CBN claims compromises the effective distribution of cash to Nigerians.

The apex bank voiced its displeasure with the growing tendency of mint Naira notes being sold in cash hawking locations throughout the nation in a circular dated December 13, 2024, and signed by Mohammed J. Olayemi, Acting Director of the Currency Operations Department.
The circular reaffirmed the CBN’s commitment to combating this illegal practice by referencing a previous order dated November 13, 2024.

The CBN states that any bank branch found guilty of enabling, assisting, or abetting the flow of mint notes to hawkers shall be subject to the fine at the first instance of a violation.

The provisions of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2020 will impose more harsher penalties for subsequent infractions.

Increased enforcement and surveillance
The CBN declared plans to increase recurring spot checks in ATMs and banking rooms, with an emphasis on examining cash disbursement procedures, in order to guarantee compliance.

In order to find cash-hawking hotspots and identify banks involved in the illicit trade, the top bank also plans to carry out mystery shopping activities.

Along with the fines, the CBN has urged banks to strengthen internal controls, cash management processes, and procedures, especially at Cash Management Centers, branches, and teller operations.

The circular stated: “The CBN has expressed dismay at the widespread illegal transfer of mint banknotes to currency hawkers and other dishonest businesspeople who turn Naira banknotes into commodities, preventing banks and the public from receiving cash in an efficient and effective manner.

“CBN will continue to step up its routine spot checks at banking halls and ATMs to examine cash payouts to bank customers. Additionally, it will conduct mystery shopping at all identified cash hawking locations nationwide.”

“In this regard, any irresponsible deposit money banks or financial institutions that are responsible for directly or indirectly facilitating, aiding, or abetting the illegal flow of mint banknotes to currency hawkers and dishonest economic agents that commodify Naira banknotes will be penalized at first N150,000,000.00 (one hundred and fifty million Naira) per erring branch, and at later times, the full force of relevant provisions of BOFIA 2020.”

In order to prevent cash distribution systems from being used for illegal activities, the apex bank advised financial institutions to take preventative measures.

Things you should be aware of
The CBN has long been concerned about the illegal flow of mint Naira notes to hawkers because it undermines the integrity of banking operations and causes inefficiencies in the cash distribution system. The top bank’s resolve to bring order back to the country’s currency circulation is emphasized in the most recent circular.
As part of its continuous efforts to ensure responsible currency distribution, the CBN earlier issued severe fines for Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) found to be diverting cash to hawkers, according to a report by Nairametrics.
The central bank announced in a circular dated November 13, 2024, that any bank connected to money taken from street vendors will be fined 10% of the total amount of the money taken out.
A 5% additional penalty will be applied for subsequent infractions.
Muhammad J. Olayemi, Acting Director, Currency Operations Department, signed the circular, which emphasized that the goals of these actions are to prevent naira note abuse and support an effective cash distribution system.
It reaffirmed the CBN’s dedication to upholding its Clean Note Policy, which aims to preserve the naira’s integrity by guaranteeing that banknotes are handled and circulated properly.
Additionally, the CBN cautioned DMBs against cash hoarding and diversion, pointing out that these actions make it more difficult to obtain cash, especially during times of high demand like the holiday season.
The CBN will engage closely with law enforcement agencies to increase spot checks and mystery shopping efforts, and banks involved in these activities will be subject to sanctions.

Northern Politician Highlights Tinubu’s ‘Betrayals’ of the North Ahead of 2027 Election

0

A well-known politician from the north has expressed disapproval of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, pointing to issues with unfair nominations and waning public confidence.

According to the politician, Tinubu’s nominations unfairly favor some areas, making many Nigerians feel left out.

Tinubu, a former two-term governor of Lagos State, is anticipated to run for president again in 2027, according to reports.

considering the economic situation and the president’s policies, which are thought to be counterproductive to the interests of the northern states.

Regarding the president’s transgressions, the source asserted that members of Tinubu’s ethnic group and clique hold a majority of important posts, such as Finance Minister, FIRS chief, CBN governor, Tax Reform committee chair, and Customs chief. The politician also questioned Tinubu’s adherence to Islamic principles and denounced his initiatives as anti-social.

“His appointments are not balanced enough.” Because of this, it appears that the majority of Nigerians do not believe his tax reform bills. One ethnic group has never controlled the financial and economic facets of government in our recent history.

The Finance Minister, the head of FIRS, the governor of the CBN, the chair of the Tax Reform committee, the head of Customs, and others are all members of his clique and ethnic group. Two days ago, the Federation’s acting accountant general was Yoruba from a single group.

In addition, every one of his policies is antisocial. How can we believe anything that emerges from such a system? The majority of us still remember his plot to declare war on the Niger Republic in order to conduct war against us in the north. How is it possible for Tinubu, a Muslim, to advocate for anti-Islamic policies? “Well, let’s see how far he can go,” the insider, who wished to remain anonymous, told Saturday Sun.
