Eight killed in Imo inter-cult clash

0

No fewer than eight persons have been killed in an inter-cult clash in the Awarra and Ochia communities of Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.

A community leader who spoke to According to Metro on condition of anonymity on Thursday lamented the inability of the state government to provide security to check the deadly onslaught of the cultists in the communities.

He said, “Eight people have so far been killed in this clash by the cultists here. Out of the eight lives reported dead in the past weeks, five were members of the cult groups, while three community members slumped and died when they heard the sound of the guns. One person who was abducted has yet to be seen.”

He urged the Nigeria Police and Imo State Government to intervene by making sure that those who ran away from the communities to neighbouring communities out of fear of being killed return home.

“Our people have become displaced and taken refuge in churches in neighbouring communities like Assa, Obile, Obosima, and Umuokanne and they’re dying because they have no food, no access to their homes and farmlands. Imagine people living outside their homes in this economic hardship.”

“To ensure that peace returns to the areas, the communities of Awara and Ochia have constituted a committee to come out with measures to restore peace.”

He expressed hope that the committee would do a good job in the restoration of lasting peace in the area, saying, “We need peace to return to our communities so that people can lead their normal lives.”

A youth leader who pleaded anonymity because of security concerns told According to Metro that the clash was a supremacy battle between contending groups over the control of proceeds from oil companies operating in the communities.

He said, “It is a battle by two groups over who will control the proceeds of the money that come to Awarra and Ochia communities by the oil companies that operate there. One group is controlled by a man called Acid while the other is led by Achis, seeking to dislodge it.”

He confirmed that no fewer than four people had been killed in the clashes but noted that normalcy had been restored following the intervention of the government.

When contacted for his reaction, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, said the security agencies had been receiving complaints about attacks by some criminal elements in the areas.

“The police have been doing a lot to restore peace in Ohaji. The Commissioner of Police has engaged in a series of meetings with stakeholders of Ohaji. We, in collaboration with other security personnel, have enhanced security strategy.

“Ohaji’s security also lies with the people of the area because there’s no way we can actually get it right without the maximum cooperation of people.”

“The Commissioner of Police has personally visited Ohaji. The cooperation with the stakeholders is yielding results because we have made several arrests. The security of Ohaji has improved since the current police boss came. We are doing everything possible to restore peace and order in the area.”

Osun pastor facing defamation charges gets N1m bail

0

A clergyman based in Osun State, Mr. Niyi Peter, on Thursday, has been granted a bail of N1m when he appeared before a Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Osogbo, the state capital, for allegedly defaming a gospel artiste, Bunmi Akinnaanu, through social media.

The clergy, arraigned on three counts, allegedly posted a picture of the artiste popularly known by her stage name, ‘Omije Ojumi’, on social media and tagged it a ‘prostitute song.’

Appearing before a magistrate, Dr. Olusegun Ayilara, details of the offences allegedly committed by the defendant as contained in the charge sheet partly read, “That you, Apostle Niyi Peter, ‘M’, sometime in April 2024, at about 1200hrs, at the Oke-Odo Area Osogbo in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did damage the character of one Bunmi Akinnaanu aka Omije Ojumi by posting her picture and tagged prostitute song on social media through your WhatsApp number 08065352473.

“That you, Apostle Niyi Peter, ‘M’, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned Magisterial District, did threaten one Bunmi Akinnaanu A.K.A Omije Ojumi’ through a WhatsApp voice note that she would perish and that she would never rise again.

“That you, Apostle Niyi Peter, ‘M’, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned Magisterial District, did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by falsely damaging the character of one Bunmi Akinnaanu A.K.A Omije Ojumi.”

The offences committed were said to be contrary to and punishable under Sections 373, 88, 249(D) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 vol. 11 law of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.

Peter pleaded not guilty to the three counts pressed against him and Mr. Okobe Najite, who had earlier announced an appearance for him, urged the court to admit his client to bail.

In his ruling on the bail application, Ayilara admitted Peter to bail in the sum of N1m with two sureties who must be civil servants.

He subsequently adjourned the matter to Tuesday, October 22.

Soludo breaks 10-year jinx amid dispute

0

The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission will conduct elections in the 21 Local Government Areas of the state on Saturday, 10 years after such exercise was last held. IKENNA OBIANERI writes on how the journey to break the jinx began

The biggest event in Anambra State this week is the conduct of the chairmanship and councillorship elections in the 21 Local Government Areas of the state on Saturday.

Barring any exigency, over 100 candidates, it was gathered, are set to battle for the control of the 21 LGAs in the state. The LGs have been under the control of Caretaker Transition Committee chairmen since 2014, and would, perhaps, begin to feel a fresh impact of governance from elected officials from tomorrow.

Before now, the 21 LGs in the state had been under the control of Caretaker Transition Committee chairmen appointed for a specific term by the governor.

Since the announcement of the election date, ANSIEC, the electoral umpire, has been preparing for the smooth conduct of the exercise, which aims to bring governance, through the third tier of government, closer to the people at the grassroots. Such preparations included engaging with leaders of political parties, issuing timetables, schedules and guidelines for the poll, training ad hoc staff and publishing names of candidates of political parties.

According to the timetable for the exercise, political parties were expected to begin and conclude all issues relating to primaries and campaigns between August 21 and September 24, 2024.

However, since the announcement of the date for the contest and even as the date approaches, a series of controversies have continued to trail the process with the main opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party, All Progressives Congress and the Labour Party, faulting the composition of the ANSIEC board, claiming that Governor Chukwuma Soludo did not follow due process, as enshrined in the Electoral Act 2022 while inaugurating the board.

The opposition parties, on several occasions, also raised a series of concerns, expressing fears and doubts over the ability of the electoral umpire to conduct a free, fair and unbiased election on Saturday. The three parties also threatened to boycott the exercise, accusing ANSIEC of working to announce all the candidates of the ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance as winners of the forthcoming election.

The parties alleged that ANSIEC had already pencilled names of all the CTC chairmen as APGA candidates and was getting ready to announce them as winners. They, therefore, declared the exercise as a sham.

To match their words with action, the three main opposition parties shunned any political campaigns leading to the exercise, as findings showed that only the APGA candidates have been carrying out campaigns, led by the governor, across the state.

The development means that APGA candidates might likely be contesting without any opponents on Saturday, further putting the election’s credibility in doubt.

Following widespread apprehension concerning the government’s reluctance to kick-start the process of installing democratically-elected officials at the third tier of government, an exercise that was last held in the state 10 years ago, the move did not materialise until the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment on June 20, 2024, which reaffirmed the financial autonomy of LGs in the country.

The court had ordered, among other things, that all federal accruals to the councils be remitted directly to them, thus putting paid to the much abused States/Local Government Joint Account Committee. Similarly, the apex court ruled that only LGs under the leadership of democratically elected officials will be eligible to receive monthly federal allocation.

In order not to be caught napping and to prevent the seizure of the state’s LGs allocation, Soludo, who had already reneged on his promise to conduct local council elections six months after assumption of office on March 17, 2022, kick-started the move to conduct elections for the grassroots on August 6, 2024, by inaugurating a six-member ANSIEC board, with Genevieve Osakwe as the chairman of the commission.

Inaugurating the commission, Soludo stressed that “they have been called to perform an onerous task, especially as it concerns the conduct of local government election in the state.” While stating that the law spelt out their wide range of functions, the governor asked them to expedite action and set a date for the conduct of local government election for Ndi Anambra.

He charged them to render sterling service with honour and integrity, as he recalled that the conduct of a local government election was a major promise he made to Ndi Anambra when he was inaugurated though he said drafting the law and getting the institution up and running took some time.

“The rest of the job is in your hands. The people of Anambra are expecting you to hit the ground running. When you are done, announce to the people when you will hold elections. I have done my job. Ndi Anambra, here comes your ANSIEC commissioners. With their credentials, it is expected that the commission would render first-rate action,” Soludo added.

But since the commencement of the process for the election by the ANSIEC board, the three major opposition parties – APC, PDP and LP – have continued to threaten withdrawal from the exercise, citing “irregularities and lopsidedness” in the process.

First to announce its withdrawal was the PDP, which expressed fear and concern over the ability of the electoral umpire to conduct a free, fair and unbiased election on Saturday. After the PDP had raised the concerns, the APC and LP also expressed their worries.

Speaking to our correspondent, the state APC chairman, Basil Ejidike, insisted that his party was withdrawing, saying that participating in the LG election would mean “legalising illegality.” He further insisted that the constitution of the ANSIEC and the announcement of the date for the election did not follow due process, as prescribed by the Electoral Act 2022.

Ejidike said, “How can a great party like the APC be involved in an election where political parties are not given enough time to conduct primaries to elect their candidates, no campaign rallies, no selling of forms in accordance with the Electoral Act?

“Soludo has already set up a tribunal at the Anambra State High Court, here in Awka, for political parties that wish to challenge the outcome of the election. The governor is not transparently prepared to give Ndi Anambra an accountable LG system.

“We are already in court to challenge the process, because the APC, being the major opposition party in Anambra State, must try as much as possible to live by example. The Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party have also gone to court to challenge the irregularities. We applaud them.

“We urge our members to remain focused, as the party will soon commence a tour across the 21 local government areas, as part of preparation for the 2025 governorship election in the state.”

He argued that the electoral process had been marred by irregularities, citing Section 23(1) of the ANSIEC Law 2024, which stipulates a 30-day notice period for the election, as inconsistent with Section 103(3) of the Electoral Act 2022, which provides for a 150-day notice period.

Also expressing its fears and concerns, the Labour Party dissociated itself from the list of LP candidates published by ANSIEC, insisting that it did not field any candidate for the local government elections. The party alleged that the names of its candidates purportedly published by the electoral body were those of APGA members.

The state LP Chairman, Chief Ugochukwu Emeh, insisted that the names published by ANSIEC as LP candidates were unknown as neither himself nor the state secretary signed nor submitted a list of nominated candidates of the party to ANSIEC for both LG councillor and chairmanship positions.

Emeh said, “The Labour Party leadership is surprised to see strange and unknown names published by ANSIEC as LP candidates. They published names of APGA members as Labour Party candidates for the forthcoming local government election which is unacceptable to us.

“We did not sell any forms for the local government election and we did not conduct any primary election to nominate candidates. We have since boycotted the election right from inception due to some observed illegalities in the process. We had never bothered to sell nomination or expression of interest forms. We didn’t even conduct a party primary.”

Reacting to these claims on the telephone, APGA’s spokesman, Dr Tony Olisa-Mbeki, said, “ANSIEC has emphatically assured that the process will be free, fair, credible, and transparent. The unfounded allegations of pre-filled results, propagated by opposition political parties who have already resigned themselves to inevitable defeat, are nothing more than cheap propaganda intended to create a false narrative of electoral malpractice. This transparent smokescreen is designed to divert attention from their lack of preparation, strategy, and public endorsement.

“ANSIEC, as an independent and professional electoral body, is steadfastly committed to upholding the sanctity and integrity of the electoral process. Those threatening to boycott the election are merely engaging in escapism, fully aware of their impending and unavoidable defeat. Their baseless threats are the last refuge of political actors devoid of support, attempting to cast unwarranted aspersions on an electoral process they are certain to lose. Such spurious accusations are without merit, and should be summarily dismissed with the scorn and contempt they so richly deserve.”

Also reacting through the telephone, ANSIEC Commissioner-in-charge of Information and Publicity, Sir Anthony Chinedu Nnalue, insisted that the commission followed due process in the announcement of the LG poll, adding that opposition parties resorted to cheap blackmail because they were afraid of losing the election.

“Those saying ANSIEC did not follow the due process of 90 days in announcing the date for the election should go and read what ANSIEC law says. The law says 30 days while federal law says 90 days, and we are using ANSIEC laws to conduct the LG poll.

“We are committed to free, fair and credible exercise and we are a neutral body. Those feeling otherwise are those who are afraid of losing the election. We have over 100 registered candidates from various political parties and all candidates would be provided with a level-playing field. We urge Ndi Anambra to come out en masse and vote for their local government chairmen on September 28, 2024.”

The conduct of the exercise after a 10-year hiatus should ordinarily bring joy and anticipation for Ndi Anambra. Given that the governorship election will be held in the state in 2025, whichever party controls the LGs would likely have the edge over other parties in the 2025 election.

According to Metro had reported that the five defendants were arraigned on June 27, 2024, on 29 counts of arson, destruction of farmland, illegal possession of firearms and robbery.

The details of the offences allegedly committed by the defendants as contained in the sheet partly read, “Oba Muideen Olanivi Azeez (A.K.A Asemalu,) Akeeb Azeez Abioye, Yisa Surajudeen Akolapo (A.K.A. Kola Isah), Rasidi Ayandiran, Sarafadeen Abioye and others at large, on or about September 3, 2019, at a farm in Oloba within the Ede Judicial Division, while armed with firearms and offensive weapons, robbed Wasilatu Akinola and other women processing palm oil with her of about 70 kegs of palm oil, palm kernel, palm fruits, goats and other domestic animals valued at about N10m, and at, or immediately before or immediately after the time of the robbery did use personal violence to the said Wasilatu Akinola and other women with her.

“Oba Muideen Olanivi Azeez (A.k.a Asemalu,) Akeeb Azeez Abioye, Yisa Surajudeen Akolapo (A.k.a. Kola Isah), Rasidi Ayandiran, Sarafadeen Abioye and others at large, on September 3, 2019, at a farm in Iloba within Ede Judicial Division willingly and unlawfully set the palace of Oba Lasisi Gbadamosi, Oloba of Iloba and other buildings in Iloba town on fire.”

The offences committed were said to be contrary to Sections 402, 403A, 443, 2(1), and 249(1) of the State Criminal Law 2002.

At the resumption of proceedings on Thursday, Justice Kudirat Akano granted the bail application of the defendants in the sum of N5m with two sureties each.

The judge also said one of the two sureties must be a level 16 civil servant who has landed properties within the court jurisdiction adding that the other must be a part-two monarch.

The defendants were however unable to meet the conditions, and the vehicle of the correctional centre was observed driving them out of the court premises around 2:10 pm.

At the commencement of the day’s proceedings, Mr Abiodun Badiora, from the state Ministry of Justice, had announced an appearance for the prosecution, while Mr Bukola Atobatele appeared for the defendants.

A prosecution witness, Mustafa Waheed, while being led by his counsel, said Elegbedi assaulted him after he (Waheed) brought policemen to arrest the monarch for destroying a farm belonging to him.

Justice Akano subsequently adjourned the matter till October 16 for the continuation of the hearing.

Kwara hails death sentence for five Offa bank robbers

0

The Kwara State Government on Thursday commended the judgment that convicted the five suspects involved in the Offa bank robbery to death describing it as a “triumph of good over evil.”

The government, in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Communications, Mrs. Bolanle Olukoju, said, “It heaves a great sigh of relief at the judgment of the State High Court, which convicted the five criminals involved in the armed robbery in Offa.”

Justice Haleema Salman had earlier convicted and sentenced the five suspects to death by hanging for their involvement in the bank robbery of April 5, 2018.

Those convicted for the robbery included Ayoade Akinnibosun, Azeez Salahudeen, Niyi Ogundiran, Ibikunle Ogunleye and Adeola Abraham.

The sixth suspect, Michael Adikwu, a retired police officer arrested with the suspects, had died while in custody before the trial began.

The convicts were tried on five counts of conspiracy, culpable homicide, illegal possession of firearms and armed robbery.

All five convicts pleaded not guilty to the offence, which they did individually.

As the case progressed, the convicts pleaded various alibis contrary to their confessional statements in a desperate bid to cover up their involvement in the crime.

The court heard during the trial that no fewer than 32 people, comprising nine police officers, including two women, were killed during the robbery of five banks located in the ancient town of Offa in Offa Local Government Area while the police station was also attacked.

The trial of the accused persons lasted over six years in the court.

Delivering the judgment, which lasted for about four hours, Justice Salman said there was abundant evidence that the convicts were partners in crime, adding that their material contradictions watered down their alibis and made them worthless.

After reviewing the evidence, the judge said, “The video clips in the court to show the culpability of the defendants made their alibis worthless, a desperate attempt to cover up and afterthought.

“The law is clear that once a person is present at the scene of a crime, such a person is culpable. Any person who fires an AK47 close at a person should know that the consequence is death.”

Salman said the prosecution proved the offences against the defendants beyond a reasonable doubt.

“The five defendants are hereby convicted for bordering on illegal possession of firearms, armed robbery and culpable homicide punishable by death.

“I order that the five of you are to be hanged untill you are pronounced dead.”

The judge also handed down three years imprisonment on each of the convicts for the offence of illegal possession of firearms based on the Penal Code Law of Nigeria.

Justice Salman added that “the convicts acted contrary to law and misbehaved by allowing their connections with the powers-that-be in government then lead them astray.”

The persecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs SAN, expressed satisfaction over the verdict appreciating the judge for being thorough despite several distractions that made the case prolonged.

The defence counsel representing the convicts, Abdullah Jimba, who stood for Mr Mathias Emeribe during the judgment, said the judgement was not unexpected, noting that his principal had already combined all necessary documents for the appeal.

The Kwara State Government said it was a melancholic incident that could never be forgotten in the history of the state.

“The government is happy that justice has been served to the victims of that unforgivable crime, their families and loved ones, to the state against which the crime was committed, and to the criminals themselves. The judgment is a triumph of good and the rule of law over evil and impunity!

“The government commends the firmness and erudition of the court on this important case. History will not forget the forthrightness of the court.

“We also commend the resourcefulness, hard work, commitment, and brilliance of the government team, which is led by the inimitable Rotimi Jacob SAN. We also commend every member of the team from the Kwara State Ministry of Justice. We thank them for giving life to the case after the initial conspiracies to sabotage it.

It noted that the judgment was a clear and bold statement that such horrible behaviour would never be tolerated from anyone or any quarters, no matter who the enablers are.

Police recover 95 rail tracks from Bauchi vandal

0

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old suspect (name withheld) for vandalising rail tracks in the state.

The spokesman for the command, SP Ahmed Wakil, who stated this on Thursday in Bauchi, said 95 vandalised rail tracks were recovered from the suspect.

He said operatives of the command, acting on credible intelligence, apprehended the 29-year-old suspect (name withheld) and recovered the stolen items from him.

“The suspect conspired with one another now at large to vandalise critical rail track components.

“The incident occurred on Tuesday, at approximately 2300 hours, in the vicinity of Inkil quarters in the Bauchi metropolis,” he said.

Wakil said the police had intensified surveillance to track down the other culprit, adding that vandalism of rail line poses threats to public safety and sabotages the national economy.

He said the rail line linked the Inkil community to Gombe State, facilitating a smooth flow of trade and transportation.

Wakil said the Commissioner of Police, Auwal Musa, lauded the collaboration between the command and the metal scrap dealers association leading to the arrest of the suspect.

“This achievement underscores the command’s dedication to safeguarding public assets and ensuring citizens’ safety through collaborative community efforts”.

He urged residents to report suspicious activities and persons to security agencies.

Amotekun arrests two suspected kidnappers, rescues victims in Ondo

0

The Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun Corps, has arrested two suspected kidnappers who allegedly abducted four travelers along the Owo/Benin expressway in Ose Local Government Area of the state.

The incident happened barely 72 hours after the corps paraded 27 suspected criminals arrested across the state, noting that after the latest arrest of the hoodlums, the corps rescued four victims.

Speaking on the development, the corps commander, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, while parading the suspects in Akure, the state capital, on Thursday, said he led the operatives in collaboration with some hunters to arrest the suspected kidnappers and rescue the victims.

According to the commander, the suspects had been terrorising farmers and commuters plying the Elegbeka/Ifon on Owo Benin Expressway and had collected a ransom of  N1.2m from some victims in August.

He said, “The suspects engaged the operatives of Amotekun in a gun battle before they were captured. A day before the rescue, there was a reported kidnapping along a well-known route. Our team swiftly mobilised and, in collaboration with hunters, we combed the forest where the victims were believed to be held. By the end of the day, we successfully rescued four people.

“What made this operation particularly significant was the identification of two of the arrested suspects. These are no longer suspected kidnappers—they are confirmed kidnappers.”

The Amotekun boss added that the victims identified the suspects as the same individuals responsible for previous abductions in the area, saying, “These criminals had been arrested before but somehow managed to return to the same locality. Now, we have them again.”

“The criminal tactic used by the kidnappers was for one of the bandits to block a portion of the road with a vehicle, forcing commuters to slow down and making them vulnerable to ambush. Another suspect was identified by one of them  who extorted N1.2m in ransom from a family in August. The same individual had demanded N20m this time but we apprehended him at the scene before the ransom could be paid.

“This arrest sends a strong message: there is no hiding place for kidnappers in Ondo State anymore. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that these criminals are brought to justice and that our communities remain safe,” Adeleye stated.

Edo poll: PDP didn’t engage in vote buying

0

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the September 21 Edo Governorship Election, Asue Ighodalo, has stated that his party did not participate in vote buying.

Ighodalo stated this on Wednesday evening when he appeared as a guest on Channels Television Politics Today programme.

According Online reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Monday Okpebholo, the winner of the election, having polled 291,667 votes, while the PDP polled 247,274 votes and the Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata polled 22,761 votes.

Meanwhile, INEC’s National Commissioner in charge of Edo State, Rhoda Gumus, presented the Certificates of Return to Governor-Elect Monday Okpebholo and his Deputy, Dennis Idahosa, on Thursday, five days after the elections.

The PDP candidate alleged that the All Progressives Congress offered minted notes of between N10,000 and N20,000 for votes, adding that the APC undermined the election with the support of INEC.

“We were not involved in vote buying at all. APC agents and other agents came with notes straight from the CBN or from the banks, mint notes, and they were offering N25,000, N30,000, and N50,000 per vote. What our guys did was to go to them and harass them and tell them that you can’t come here to buy votes. But we were not engaged in vote buying in any way, I’m clear about that”.

“We didn’t even need to go and buy votes. The people of Edo State were solidly with us, solidly. It’s only when you’re not sure of your capability you cannot perform. That’s when you do underhand things. And APC, through this election, with the connivance, complicity and support of INEC, undermined the whole democratic process.”, he stated.

Responding to whether he would accept the hand of fellowship from the Governor-elect and work with the new government, Ighodalo stated, “Because the mandate is stolen, there is no way you can accept these hands of fellowship or friendship. I will stay with the people of Edo State, who fully gave me the mandate of their free will, and I will go into the courts and the Tribunal to reclaim our mandate and then form the government”.

Prioritise Edo’s development, Tinubu tells Okpebholo

0

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday called on the Edo State governor-elect, Monday Okpebholo, to prioritise his state’s development.

He also assured him of the full support of the Federal Government and the Progressive Governors’ Forum.

Tinubu gave this advice at a meeting with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress party, where the Edo governor-elect, Okpebholo, and the deputy governor-elect, Dennis Idahosa, presented their certificates of return.

The Special Adviser to Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who was at the meeting, revealed the details in a statement titled ‘President Tinubu receives Edo gov-elect, tasks him on development.’

Tinubu emphasised the importance of good governance and delivering results to the people of Edo State, saying, “Governor-elect, you can now face the task of development.

We are here to work with you. You have seen the progressive governors of APC. They are truly progressive. Work with them. Learn the ropes, and I believe you are up to the task.”

Acknowledging the challenges of democracy, particularly in emerging economies such as Nigeria, the President added, “You have earned the victory. Democracy is difficult, particularly in emerging democracies and economies like ours.

“If you hear complaints from places like America, you know how difficult it is to navigate democracy. But it remains the best form of government.”

The President congratulated Senator Okpebholo and his deputy, describing them as a “good symbol of people ordained by God to work together.”

“You started as rivals and ended up as partners. You are a symbol of good understanding in politics; the man at our party’s helm has been through it before.

“In Kano, he was a front runner, became a second runner, and became a deputy before he eventually became a governor,” he said.

Tinubu acknowledged the role played by former Edo State governor, Senator -, the progressive governors, and the APC leadership in the successful outcome of the gubernatorial election in Edo.

“I saw Adams Oshiomhole radiating in joy. Sincerely, the governors showed up in Edo; they impressed me. They defended the party. They worked hard for the party,” he remarked.

Tinubu also commended INEC and the security agencies for ensuring a peaceful and organised election, with no reports of violence or disturbances.

“I must thank the security agencies. There was no bloodshed, no riot; people voted and went back to their houses in peace, and the fears dissipated instantly,” he said.
The President urged the party leadership and membership to remain united and focused on achieving the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Never mind the noise makers. I do a lot of statistical sampling and results. When you hear politicians saying ‘all politics is local’, you must respect that notion.

“When you see the stability in the Edo North senatorial district, we see a man who won the Central senatorial district and a candidate who has won a seat in the South senatorial district; we did a match that turned out to be a winning match,” he said.

President Tinubu also commented on the heavy downpour on Election Day in Edo and the electorate’s commitment to vote in the rain without an umbrella.

“It is a very striking illustration,” the President said, referring to remarks made by the National Chairman of the party, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, about the election-day rains in Edo.
In his remarks, Ganduje, the party’s national chairman, commended the President, the governors, and all stakeholders for their leadership and support.

“On the day of the election, there was an exciting scenario: it was raining heavily, yet people came out to vote without using an umbrella.

“Your Excellency, the people were convinced that our party is the party to be voted for, and we won the election,” he said.

The APC National Chairman noted that the party’s next focus is securing victories in the forthcoming governorship elections in Ondo and Anambra states.

“Having only two states in the Southeast as APC is too small for us. We need more states from the Southeast geopolitical zone,” he said.
