US man kills family members, takes own life after Trump’s victory

0

A United States man, Anthony Nephew, shot himself, his wife, ex-partner, and two children after the November 5 election that brought President-elect Donald Trump into office.

According to authorities who spoke to the New York Post on Sunday, the 46-year-old Minnesota father had expressed anger over Trump’s election.

The shooter, aged 46, had a “pattern of mental health issues,” Duluth Police Chief Mike Ceynowa said on Friday — one day after authorities found five people dead inside two homes in the city.

Authorities found Anthony Nephew’s ex-partner, Erin Abramson, 47, and their son, Jacob Nephew, 15, dead from apparent gunshot wounds inside their home on Thursday afternoon, police said.

After identifying Anthony Nephew as a suspect, police found his 45-year-old wife, Kathryn Nephew, and their 7-year-old son, Oliver Nephew, dead from gunshot wounds inside their family home nearby.

Before the tragedy, Anthony Nephew had been sharing left-wing and anti-Trump posts on his Facebook account.

“My mental health and the world can no longer peacefully coexist, and a lot of the reason is religion,” Anthony Nephew wrote in July.

“I am terrified of religious zealots inflicting their misguided beliefs on me and my family. I have intrusive thoughts of being burned at the stake as a witch or crucified on a burning cross.

“Having people actually believe that I or my child are Satan, or the anti-Christ, or whatever their favourite boogeyman they are afraid of this week.”

In another post, he accused Republicans of “making it harder for women to leave” abusive relationships.

“Gilead here we come,” he wrote, referencing The Handmaid’s Tale, a dystopian novel turned Hulu series in which women, stripped of their rights, are forced to reproduce for the ruling class.

Anthony Nephew also shared other political posts, including an image of former President Barack Obama, Trump, President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris. The word “hate” was under Trump’s face, while the words “hope,” “heal,” and “grow” corresponded with the Democratic politicians.

“Not that anyone cares, but as an Independent voter, I would really like to see both the political parties in our country pick better candidates,” he wrote in July. “We can do better than a binary choice between fascism and not fascism.”

Anthony Nephew had previously issued a chilling warning about his struggles with mental health, writing in an op-ed for the Duluth News Tribune in 2021, “For millions of Americans, a breakdown leads to suicide — or homicide before suicide.”

“Mental health in this country is stigmatised, ignored, or treated as a burden for the individual to bear alone, with little help and even less understanding,” he wrote.

“Americans deny they have mental health struggles — because they have to, because they’re told to, or because they don’t realise their mind is broken.”

Police in Duluth, a city of nearly 90,000 residents about 135 miles north of Minneapolis, have not yet determined a motive for the shootings.

Police said there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Police ready for gov election, says commissioner

0

The Ondo State Police Commissioner, Abayomi Oladipupo, has stated that the state police command is well-prepared for the upcoming governorship election on November 16.

Oladipupo made this statement as the command commenced training for officers in preparation for the forthcoming election.

The training began on Tuesday and concluded on Wednesday.

Speaking at the event, held at the Officers’ Mess in Akure, Oladipupo explained that the training was an initiative of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as part of the police force’s efforts to ensure professionalism among officers during the off-cycle poll.

The CP said, “This training programme is organised under the guidance of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in preparation for the upcoming off-cycle elections on November 16, 2024, in Ondo State. The Inspector General has initiated this programme to ensure that officers of all ranks across the state are well-prepared.

“This two-day programme will cover, in-depth, the statutory roles of the police during elections as defined in the Electoral Act of 2022. It will also emphasise human rights and other day-to-day policing responsibilities. Officers are expected to familiarise themselves with these essential duties, although the material isn’t new for most of us.

“We’ve already held a training session two weeks ago, and this is just one of several programmes organised in anticipation of the elections. The officers here have come from various locations across the state and are filling key positions. My advice to them is to take full advantage of this opportunity provided by the Inspector General of Police.

“They need to be clear about what is expected of them, what they must and must not do. There can be no excuse for failure. The eyes of the world are on Ondo State, and I am confident that our officers will perform their duties with professionalism and integrity.”

In his remarks, a consulting firm handling the training for the officers, GTA Consulting Firm, represented by Johnson Ategihe, stated that the objective of the programme was to address the security challenges in the state.

“There have been concerns about potential violence, but the Inspector General of Police has emphasised the importance of strengthening the capacity of officers to assure the public, voters, and all stakeholders of a level playing field.

“The programme aims to ensure comprehensive security for everyone involved, supporting a free and fair election process without violence. Our goal is to create an environment where all stakeholders can participate equally and confidently, and where the election outcome is free from disturbances,” Ategihe stated.

A truck, reportedly suffering from brake failure, crashed into Ayetoro Market in Lagos, leaving at least three people dead.

The truck, descending from Ita-Opo, is said to have lost its brakes, hitting a commercial tricycle and a parked Toyota Camry before ramming into the market.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority shared details of the incident on its official X handle on Monday.

The post read: “A fatal accident occurred due to a brake failure of a truck descending from Ita-Opo. It hit a commercial tricycle and a parked Toyota Camry before ramming into the Ayetoro Market/Complex.

“Three lives were lost, and the bodies have been taken to the morgue at Epe General Hospital. A tow truck is on the ground to evacuate the affected vehicles.

Harris concedes presidential election to Trump, calls for unity

0

United States Democratic Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris has conceded the 2024 presidential election to Donald Trump, following a decisive victory for the Republican candidate.

According to a senior aide, as reported by Al Jazeera, Harris called Trump on Wednesday to congratulate him and “discussed the importance of a peaceful transfer of power” and being a president for everyone in the country.

In her phone call, Harris reportedly expressed her commitment to unity, urging the country to come together.

She is scheduled to deliver remarks later today in Washington, D.C., marking her first public statement since her projected loss.

Trump, who has surpassed the 270 electoral votes required to reclaim the presidency, returns to office as the 47th President of the United States after his 2020 defeat by Joe Biden.

His campaign found success among voters frustrated by economic concerns, high inflation, and immigration issues, which exit polls showed were key factors in shifting battleground states away from the Democrats.
Harris’s historic candidacy followed Biden’s withdrawal from the race in July due to health concerns.

After endorsing Harris, the 60-year-old Vice President led a vigorous campaign, focusing on issues such as economic recovery, reproductive rights, and inclusivity.

Harris’s platform resonated with young voters, particularly women concerned about reproductive freedoms following the US Supreme Court’s recent decision to overturn constitutional protections for abortion.

Gunmen kill two in Ogun

A three-man armed gang shot two people dead in the early hours of Monday, while two others sustained bullet injuries in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola, disclosed this in a statement released on Monday.

Odutola explained that the incident occurred at about 12:30 am in the parking lot of Diamond Dumplings, GRA, Abeokuta.

She stated that three armed men in an unregistered black Toyota Hilux confronted the occupants of a black Mercedes Benz GLE 350 with a DLA licence plate, demanding the car keys.

Odutola said, “Three armed men in an unregistered black Toyota Hilux confronted the occupants of a black Mercedes Benz GLE 350 with a DLA licence plate, demanding the car keys.

“The assailants opened fire, hitting one Ola (surname unknown), Shobanke Oluwatimileyin, and two others. The Divisional Police Officer from Ibara, responding to distress calls, arrived at the scene and ensured the area was secure before transporting the victims to the hospital.

“Upon their arrival, the attending doctor confirmed two fatalities, while the other two individuals are receiving medical attention at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta.”

She further revealed that a preliminary investigation had been initiated to examine the factors leading to the two deaths and to assess any potential links to cult activities.

“The public will be informed about the progress of the investigation in the coming days, as a follow-up to arrest the fleeing suspects,” she said.

What will be priorities of America’s 47th President?

0

Donald Trump has reclaimed the US presidency, marking a historic political comeback as the 47th president. Known for his bold and often divisive policies, Trump’s return signals a potential revival of his “America First” agenda, with implications for domestic and global affairs. GIFT HABIB explores what lies ahead in Trump’s second return to power

Donald Trump has once again captured the United States presidency, winning as the 47th president and securing an unprecedented political comeback.  Known for his polarising approach, Trump’s return to the White House brings with it both continuity and change.

The former Republican president claimed victory on Wednesday as results put him on the verge of beating Kamala Harris in a stunning White House comeback.

During Trump’s first term, his administration followed a distinctly nationalist course that reshaped US policy in several areas.

His “America First” strategy aimed to boost American industry, reduce dependency on China, and address trade imbalances. This included renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement into the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement and imposing tariffs on foreign goods, particularly from China.

Trump also withdrew from the Trans-Pacific Partnership and began a trade war with China, actions he viewed as essential to reviving American manufacturing and enhancing the economy, especially for working-class Americans.

Trump’s stance on immigration became one of his most notable and controversial hallmarks. His administration championed strict immigration reforms focused on border security, including a US-Mexico border wall, the “Remain in Mexico” policy for asylum seekers, and a travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries.

These moves drew both support and widespread criticism, especially for their impact on immigrant communities and international perceptions of the US.

Perhaps, his most lasting impact came through his influence on the judiciary. The former Republican president appointed three Supreme Court justices, tilting the court to a conservative majority, along with numerous federal judges across the judiciary.

On the economic front, his administration pursued deregulation, favouring traditional energy sources over renewables and rolling back environmental protections to stimulate economic growth.

His 2017 tax reform, lowering the corporate tax rate, was another legislative victory, though it also faced criticism for benefiting the wealthy. Trump’s foreign policy was often unorthodox and marked by strong scepticism toward multilateralism.

He withdrew from international agreements like the Paris Climate Accord and the Iran Nuclear Deal and frequently criticised North Atlantic Treaty Organisations members for underfunding defence.

He also took an unconventional approach to diplomacy, developing personal ties with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un and maintaining a complex relationship with Russia’s Vladimir Putin. His approach both disrupted traditional alliances and fueled significant debate over America’s role on the global stage.

For his second term, Trump campaigned on a promise to restore and expand on his “America First” agenda.  Trump has more than once promised to end Russia’s war on Ukraine before he’s inaugurated.

“That is a war that’s dying to be settled. I will get it settled before I even become president,” Trump said in the September presidential debate against Harris.

He also said in a May 2023 CNN town hall that he would end the conflict “in 24 hours.” Trump has repeatedly been asked how he’d do this but has never outlined a plan.

He pledged to restore American energy independence by reversing Biden-era climate policies and reinvigorating oil and gas production, with an emphasis on reducing foreign energy dependence.

Trump also promised new tax incentives to promote domestic manufacturing and attract industries back to US soil. His economic vision included further tax cuts and favouring traditional energy sectors over renewables to reduce costs and boost energy independence.

On immigration, Trump pledged to complete the border wall and tighten immigration policies further, including reinstating “Remain in Mexico” and expanding deportations.

He expressed a desire to reform asylum policies and prioritise merit-based immigration, with an emphasis on limiting migration that could impact American jobs.

With his return to the presidency, Trump pledged to implement what he described as the “largest deportation” effort in the US history.

During his campaign, he repeatedly vowed to launch a massive deportation initiative that would target individuals he identified as illegal criminals, specifically naming migrants in cities like Aurora, Colorado, and Springfield, Ohio, as early targets.

His promises on law enforcement emphasised “law and order,” with a focus on supporting police departments, increasing penalties for violent crime, and opposing movements he perceived as weakening public safety.

In education, Trump promised reforms that would promote school choice, advocating for parental rights in the educational process and opposing the teaching of Critical Race Theory in schools.

His foreign policy strategy stressed a return to “America First” principles, including potential reductions in foreign aid and a continued focus on bilateral relations rather than multilateral commitments.

Trump’s foreign policy in a second term is likely to reassert a tough stance on China, seeking to limit Chinese influence and possibly expanding tariffs and sanctions.

His administration is expected to take a hardline approach on intellectual property issues and encourage American companies to limit reliance on Chinese manufacturing.

In the Middle East, Trump will likely maintain a firm stance on Iran, reinforcing sanctions and military deterrence while building on the Abraham Accords to normalise Israel’s relations with other Middle Eastern countries.

Trump’s claim of victory in the US presidential election has led to swift reactions from leaders worldwide and optimism in financial markets, signalling renewed partnerships and expectations of economic growth.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warmly welcomed Trump’s win, calling it “history’s greatest comeback” and expressing optimism about a new chapter in the US-Israel alliance.

Netanyahu described Trump’s return as a chance for a renewed commitment to their close strategic partnership, especially on regional security matters.

China’s reaction was cautiously optimistic, calling for “peaceful coexistence” in future US-China relations. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning expressed hope for mutual respect and collaboration, indicating China’s interest in maintaining a stable relationship while preparing for Trump’s typically assertive stance, particularly on trade and economic issues.

French President Emmanuel Macron extended a diplomatic message, affirming his readiness to work with Trump “with respect and ambition.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Trump, emphasising hopes for “just peace” in Ukraine and expressing appreciation for Trump’s “peace through strength” philosophy.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte welcomed Trump’s win, expressing confidence in his ability to strengthen the alliance.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent warm congratulations to Trump, referring to him as a “friend” and expressing optimism for renewed US-India collaboration.

In Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu extended his congratulations, underscoring aspirations for closer cooperation between the US and Nigeria. Tinubu emphasised mutual goals of economic growth, peace, and addressing shared challenges while highlighting Trump’s prior experience as a factor that could bring renewed focus to US-Africa relations.

The Chairman Emeritus of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Americas, Obed Monago, told The According they want an America where immigrants would move about without discrimination.

“We want an America where immigrants like us can thrive without facing discrimination, where we can contribute to the economy and society without barriers,” Monago added.

Trump’s return to the presidency has prompted both enthusiasm and cautious optimism globally.

Leaders are eager to explore potential partnerships under his renewed leadership, and financial markets are reacting positively to his anticipated economic policies.

As Trump prepares to assume office, the world will be watching closely to see how his administration approaches both domestic and international issues in an increasingly complex global landscape.

Adeleke, South West PDP take campaign to markets, palaces

0

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party in the South-West have intensified campaigns for the election of the party’s candidate in Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi, ahead of next week’s governorship poll.

PDP South-West Publicity Secretary, Sanya Atofarati, stated, “Governor Adeleke and the PDP in the region are strengthening Agboola Ajayi’s campaign in markets, palaces, and various communities to gain more supporters for the party candidate.”

In a statement made available in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, Atofarati added, “Some of the areas we have visited in the Ondo PDP governorship campaign include Bolorunduro, Ondo, and Owo. We also visited the palace of the Osemawe and canvassed votes inside the markets for candidate Agboola Ajayi.”

“We were at the Labour House in Akure, where we met with retired permanent secretaries and directors in the state.”

“The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive; the people of the state are resolute, and they are prepared. They are determined to vote for the PDP candidate in the election.”

“A PDP victory is achievable because our government, in the past, implemented tangible projects that have stood the test of time. It is clear that the people of Ondo State are dissatisfied with the way the All Progressives Congress has mismanaged the state in the last eight years. Nothing significant has been accomplished by the sitting governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.”

“This is not just about political parties; it’s about the people’s welfare. The state has been neglected. There is no way the people of Ondo State will continue like this. They are suffering, which is why they are determined to change the government and elect the PDP.”

“From our interactions and the feedback from our campaigns, visits to communities, palaces, markets, and groups, it is clear that the people of Ondo State recognise that the lasting projects in the state were implemented by the PDP government. Without what the PDP government accomplished, nothing would be left,” Atofarati said.

However, the Ondo State Commissioner for Information, Wale Akinlosotu, said that Adeleke and the South-West PDP were only in Ondo State for a “jamboree,” adding, “They will return to their bases empty-handed after being defeated in the election.”

Akinlosotu remarked, “It is evident that the people of Ondo State are behind Aiyedatiwa of the APC in this election. His projects and programmes resonate with the people, which is why they will vote for him next week to continue in office and deliver even more life-transforming projects for the state.”

“PDP is in decline in Ondo State. All the major stakeholders in the party have joined the APC. This is a clear indication of Governor Aiyedatiwa’s widespread acceptance and purposeful leadership,” the commissioner added.
