Atiku, Obi couldn’t have performed better than Tinubu

0

A former Director-General of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign Organisation, Doyin Okupe, has heaped praises on President Bola Tinubu for his economic reforms, saying his former principal, Peter Obi, and the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, couldn’t have done better.

Okupe gave the plaudits when he was featured as a guest on Monday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today.

He said, “By benefit of hindsight, none of the three major candidates who ran for that election, except for Tinubu, could have faced this quagmire we are and have the heart to breast it.

“They don’t even have the knowledge and the resources to do what he is doing now.”

When asked if he does not sound like a betrayer to Obi, who he once described as the best man for the job, Okupe shakes his head.

The medical doctor stated that he had previously worked on faulty assumptions until he saw the courage and passion with which Tinubu was trying to steer the economy out of the woods.

“That was why I said by the benefit of hindsight. There is no betrayal. Has Peter Obi told you what he would do if he was president? Talk is cheap.

“It is not as if I don’t believe in Peter Obi. He was a damn good candidate when we got him. But we lost that election, and a better man won. It is a competition. I thought Obi was better than Tinubu. That was what I thought.

“But seeing what Bola Tinubu is doing and his disposition, especially after meeting him yesterday (Sunday), I am more than convinced that if this gentleman is given understanding and time, he is going to get us out of this problem,” he stated.

When asked if he has a problem with Atiku, whom he was also close to while working for former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Okupe denied having anything against him.

He, however, faulted the former Vice President’s proposition on how he could have performed better than the current President if he was voted by Nigerians.

He said, I am telling you, none of these other two people (Atiku and Obi) could have done better than him. That is why I said talk is cheap. Fuel subsidy has been on the table for the last 20 years. Nobody had the nerve to even try to do it.

“I read Atiku’s proposition. He said if he was the President, he would borrow $10bn and another $25bn to do something. That makes $35bn. Who is going to lend you money? By the time Buhari was leaving, Nigeria was not sellable. Nobody was going to give Nigeria $1 bn anywhere.

“Because we could not borrow money anywhere, the Buhari administration went ahead and did an illegal and unlawful thing through the ways of means and printed $21trn. So when you are faced with that, it is a quagmire. That is confounding. Only a brave man, one with mental resources and confidence in himself, can do what Bola Tinubu is doing.”

Mother seeks Lagos CP intervention over alleged extortion

0

A Lagos-based mother of four identified as Mrs Alabi has appealed to the Commissioner of Police, Ishola Olanrewaju, to help retrieve the sum of N50,000 allegedly extorted from her family by operatives in the Elere Division in the Agege area of the state.

Alabi made the appeal to the CP through According to Metro on Sunday while narrating the circumstances behind the alleged extortion.

According to Alabi, her family had yet to recover from the debt incurred after having to take a loan of N50,000 to bail his son, Quayum Alabi, who was detained by the Elere Police Division in the Agege area of the state.

She revealed that her son was on his way back from work when he was accosted by police officers who claimed he was arrested for late-night crawling sometime in September.

She added that her son was searched by the police but found with nothing incriminating about him yet they proceeded to detain him. She alleged that her son was kept in custody for several hours before allowing him to communicate with the family.

She said, “The police searched my son and they did not find anything incriminating on him. They took him to their station and did not allow him to communicate with anyone. It was the second day that he had to beg one of the officers to allow him to call his dad.

“When my husband visited the station, he was asked to pay N100,000 as bail fee but several appeals to make them to realise that we are a poor family proved abortive.

“After several back and forth, they asked us to pay N50,000 which I had to borrow from a contribution group I belonged to so that I could secure the release of my son.”

The mother of four added that the money that she had been struggling to pay back through her petty trading had subjected her family to debt and hardship.

She continued, “Though the N50,000 may seem small to some, to me and my family, it is a life-saver whose debt has brought us to hardship.”

She however appealed to the Lagos Commissioner of Police to intervene and ensure that her plight is alleviated.

“I will be grateful if the Commissioner of Police can help me get my money back because I am still paying the debt back to the lender,” Alabi said.

When contacted for his reaction, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, did not respond to calls and messages.

He also did not respond to a WhatsApp message after more than 48 hours of reading the message.

According to Metro reported on Friday that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, condemned the spate of extortion allegations against some officers of the force in various areas across the country.

He specifically referenced a recent case involving officers from the Zone 16 Zonal Headquarters in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State.

Some officers identified as ASP Emmanuel Ubong, Inspector Nse Okon, Inspector Adiewere Collins, and Inspector Kuromare Marine were accused of extorting the sum of N10 million from some youths.

The Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, had in a statement said the money was recovered through the efforts of the new Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 16 and that the officers had been detained and subjected to an orderly room trial.

Cash-strapped parties dump campaigns, cling to APC, PDP

As the Ondo governorship draws closer, PETER DADA writes on the political tactics adopted by the smaller parties to join either the ruling APC or the opposition PDP

It is no more news that the governorship election in Ondo State is coming up November 16 and political activities are permeating the atmosphere across the 18 Local Government Areas of the state following the ongoing campaigns by the political parties.

As it does happen during campaign periods, the politicians have also been engaging in house-to-house, street-to-street and person-to-person campaigns selling their products (candidates) to the people of the state. The candidates too, particularly those of the major political parties, have been visiting the people from one local government to the other.

It is expected that the 18 political parties that were cleared by the Independent National Electoral Commission for the election should be in the ongoing campaign business and activities. However, that’s not the case; those seriously involved in the campaign are not up to seven.

The parties cleared for the election by INEC include the ruling All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Accord Party, Action Alliance, African Action Congress, African Democratic Congress, African Democratic Party and All Progressives Grand Alliance.

Others are Allied Peoples Movement, Action Peoples Party, Labour Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, National Rescue Movement, Peoples Redemption Party, Social Democratic Party, Youth Party, Young Progressives Party and the Zenith Labour Party.

As a matter of fact, the ones who appear serious and ready for the election among the parties in terms of preparation for the poll are APC, PDP, NNPP, LP, ZLP, SDP and ADC. However, only the APC and PDP have been moving around the state, rigorously campaigning due to their financial edge over the others. Apart from not campaigning, some of the lesser parties don’t have structures anywhere in the state. Many of them don’t even have a party secretariat in the state, let alone printing of posters, billboards or do other media engagements as the campaigns reached the pinnacle.

It was gathered that the lack of seriousness of these parties informed their exclusion from Sunday’s election debate organised by Channels Television, which only picked two leading candidates of the APC and the PDP, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and Agboola Ajayi, respectively.

Following their poor preparations for the forthcoming poll, some of the leadership of the lesser parties, it was reliably learnt, were in discussions to form alliances with either APC or the PDP.

A source in one of the parties seeking alliances with the big boys explained that the arraignments were in top gear and almost finalized ahead of the forthcoming poll.

The source said, “I can tell you authoritatively that very few parties would remain in the contest, in the coming election in November 16. Many of the smaller parties have been meeting with the big parties to collapse their structures before Election Day because they know they are not going anywhere. They don’t even have the financial strength to stand the election. What is delaying many of them from taking action is the negotiation with the big parties. As soon as the negotiations are completed, they will announce which party they want to join, particularly the APC or the PDP.

“Some of the candidates know already from the outset that they are not going anywhere in the election but chose to go for the race probably to make money because the negotiation I’m talking about is money. Some of their candidates are not even known in their wards let alone their local governments, yet they want to contest for the state election. The governorship election is for the serious-minded who have the financial capacity and the popularity in the state.”

On the other hand, another source within the PDP confirmed such an arrangement between the leadership of the Zenith Labour Party and the PDP but added that the arrangement was yet to be finalised as of the time of filing this report.

“The talks are ongoing between us and them (ZLP). The talks should have been finalised last week and the announcement made but certain issues came up, which stalled the process. However, the meetings are still ongoing and I’m certain it will be concluded before the election,” the source disclosed.

Recently, the deputy governorship candidate of the SDP, Mrs Susan Alabi, defected to the APC when the window of opportunity for the party to replace her had closed, leaving her former principal and SDP governorship candidate, Mr Bamidele Akingboye, alone in the struggle at the peak of the campaign. This development affirmed the possibility of the last-minute alliance of the political parties.

Political analysts and keen followers of events ahead of the election opine that it will not be a surprise if Akingboye, who has remained mum over the action of his erstwhile running mate, also aligns with another party on the eve of the poll.

Many believe that last-minute merging of political parties is not a new trend in Nigerian politics as same scenario played out in September’s governorship election in Edo State when some parties collapsed their structures to support the APC few days to the poll. With what is being gathered in the camp of many political parties in Ondo State, a similar scenario would surface before the November 16 election, with the ruling APC and the PDP most likely to be the major beneficiaries.

However, some of the parties are expressing divergent views about the development. Some minor parties claimed to be capable of winning the election and didn’t need any big party to be victorious in the forthcoming poll, while some of the big parties said there was nothing strange and wrong if smaller parties were joining them since politics was a game of numbers.

The candidate of the ADC, Myson Nejo, said he was unaware of such alliances, believing that in a free and fair contest, no candidate could defeat him come November 16.  He added that his party did not have any plan of alliance with any party.

“If others are planning to merge, we don’t have such a plan. We are campaigning round the 18 Local Government Areas of the state. We have visited many towns and villages to campaign to our people. But one thing I’ve noticed is that money is a huge part of the issues we face, everything revolves around money. But we are moving.

“I don’t care about them. I’m not afraid of APC or PDP. If the election is conducted fairly, the people’s choice will prevail. I will win the election but I want to appeal to the electoral commission to remain neutral and allow free, fair and credible election.”

In his reaction, the state Chairman of the Zenith Labour Party, Cornelius Akintoye, denied the purported arrangement with the PDP as he declared that the opposition party was still in the race and had no plan to merge with any political party ahead of the governorship election. However, he did not fail to mention that the party leadership was not oblivious of the planned movement of some purported dissident members of the ZLP to the PDP. He disowned them, saying they were not members of the ZLP.

“I am the state Chairman of the Zenith Labour Party in Ondo State, I would like to tell you authoritatively that there is no plan to merge with the PDP. We are fully preparing to participate in the upcoming election. We are fully engaging and moving forward with our campaign. I am the chairman, there is no time I met with the leadership of any other party for any alliance.

“However, it has come to our notice that certain individuals are falsely claiming affiliation with our party and may be accepting funds from PDP or APC. Please note, these individuals are not members of our organisation and do not represent us,” Akintoye declared

In a reaction, the state PDP’s Publicity Secretary, Kennedy Peretei, confirmed that the smaller parties were interested in joining them but said the party would make the arrangement public. He, however, did not mention the identities of the concerned political parties.

“Yes, many smaller parties have declared their interest in merging with us but we intend to make the details public soon,” Peretei stated.

On the other hand, the Director of Media and Publicity of the APC, Steve Otaloro, said the ruling party did not need any alliance before winning the off cycle election, explaining that the popularity of the party and its candidate, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, was enough to earn them the desired victory.

He, however, noted that the door of the party was widely open for any interested party to merge.

“The APC remains confident in our stronghold in Ondo State, thanks to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s impressive achievements in just 10 months in office. His leadership has attracted numerous individuals and groups to join our party, solidifying our position as the party to beat.  We welcome like-minded individuals and groups to join us voluntarily, but we aren’t seeking alliances to win the election. Our fortified structure and organisational ability makes us the party to beat. In fact, Governor Aiyedatiwa’s campaign to seek the electorate’s support was met with overwhelming support from the good people of Ondo State in his campaign train across the state, turning a meeting into a rally. This enthusiasm is a testament to his impact in just 10 months in office and showcasing his commitment to transforming Ondo State.

“If smaller parties wish to align with us, it’s because they recognise our strategic importance in shaping the state’s future. We’re not seeking partnerships to win; rather, we’re offering an opportunity for others to be part of history. Our focus remains on delivering dividends of democracy to the people, and we’re committed to securing victory in the November 16 governorship election.”

As it is currently in the Sunshine State, the November 16 poll is very much around the corner and all stakeholders are set to witness another day of history which will determine the future of the state and its people.

SDP candidate seeks traditional rulers’ support

0

The Social Democratic Party’s candidate for the November 16 Ondo State Governorship election, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, has sought the support of traditional rulers across the state ahead of the polls.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Charles Akinwon, on Tuesday and shared with According Online, Akingboye, who has taken his campaign to several Obas seeking their official endorsement, emphasised the importance of traditional leaders in fostering community backing for his candidacy.

The statement reads, “Akingboye’s active campaigning across the state has resonated with the people, earning him the support of prominent traditional rulers. His leadership and vision, coupled with his commitment to unity and progress, have made him a strong contender.

“As a seasoned entrepreneur with over 40 years of experience, Akingboye has demonstrated his ability to drive growth and development. His philanthropic efforts through the OBA Foundation have empowered many, providing health initiatives, scholarships, and support for small businesses.

“The traditional institutions see Akingboye as the leader Ondo State needs to provide security and stability. With the current administration struggling to address kidnapping and herder-farmer crises, Akingboye believes cooperation across all strata of society is essential.

This broad-based support, combined with his impressive track record, positions Akingboye for a significant impact in the upcoming election.”

Husband arrested for allegedly setting wife ablaze in Ogun

0

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man, identified as Olubunmi Johnson, for allegedly setting his wife, Kikelomo, on fire in their apartment on Fagbuyi Street, Ilogbo, in the Ota area of Ogun State.

According to Metro learnt from an eyewitness on Saturday evening that the incident took place around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, following a domestic dispute.

While the exact circumstances leading to the confrontation remain unclear at the time of this report, the spokesperson for the state police command, Omolola Odutola told our correspondent that Johnson has been detained in connection with the crime.

Our correspondent learnt that a neighbour who witnessed the incident alerted the victim’s relatives, who then informed the police about what is now being investigated as an attempted murder.

Odutola told our correspondent that police officers from the Ilogbo Division quickly took action, resulting in the arrest of the 55-year-old suspect.

“The husband doused his wife’s body with petrol and set her on fire with a match. Witnesses to the incident immediately rushed her to the hospital.

“Upon receiving the report, our detectives quickly took action and arrested the husband, who has since been detained.”

According to Metro reported a similar case of domestic violence in October 2024, when a 30-year-old man, Motunrayo Olaniyi, allegedly stabbed his newlywed wife, Olajumoke, to death at Amazing Grace Estate, Elepe, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

The incident reportedly occurred following a heated argument between the couple.

The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that during the altercation, Olaniyi stabbed his 25-year-old wife multiple times, locked her in the room, and set the room on fire.

APC chieftain begs FG, donors to pay attention to Niger Delta

0

A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Yekini Nabena, on Tuesday, appealed to the Federal Government and donor agencies to give urgent attention to the nine states in the Niger Delta region recently affected by flood disaster.

The former deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC made the plea in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja.

The nine Niger Delta region states include Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo and Rivers.

His appeal comes barely two days after the Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, announced plans to flag off distribution of palliatives worth millions of naira to support displaced persons in the Niger Delta.

Momoh listed the items approved for distribution as rice, spaghetti, beans, sewing machines, grinding machines, motorcycles, and cooking stoves, among others.

But Nabena pleaded that the victims of the flood disaster be accorded the same humanitarian donations and reliefs enjoyed by Borno State residents when it was overwhelmed by flooding two months ago.

He said “It has become necessary to appeal to the Federal Government, its donors and individuals who have donated to the recent flood disasters in the North-East to do the same for the Niger Delta region.

“In recent times, several lives have been lost, property destroyed, and large farmlands are totally washed away, rendering several people and communities homeless, jobless, and their sources of livelihoods destroyed.

“Although there are agencies of government in this region just as we have in the North-East, the devastating effects of this disaster have far gone beyond the likes of Niger Delta Development Commission and others.

“I, hereby, call on the Federal Government, private individuals and donor agencies to urgently intervene to reduce to the minimum the negative effects of the recent flood disaster in our region.”

Continuing, Nabena specifically called to the new Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda and agencies like the National Emergency Management Agency and National Commission for Refugees, among others, not to close their eyes against the ongoing flood disaster.

According to him, farmers in Bayelsa and Delta States are currently counting their losses as flood washed away their Cassava farms.

Speeding vehicle knocks down fleeing suspected thief in Lagos

0

A yet-to-be-identified male adult suspected to be a thief was on Sunday found lying unconscious after being knocked down by a hit-and-run driver in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State.

According to Metro learnt that the incident happened on Friday morning.

Our correspondent gathered that the suspect had broken into an apartment in the community in the early hours of Friday when some residents saw him.

To avoid being apprehended, he was said to have taken to his heels while some residents chased him.

While fleeing the community, he suddenly ran into the expressway and got hit by a speeding vehicle in the process.

Our correspondent during a visit to the community on Sunday saw the suspect with swollen eyes and bruised body still lying on the roadside just by the edge of the Abule Egba bridge.

A trader, Ganiyat Enitan, who owns a shop close to the bridge, told According to Metro that the accident victim had been on the spot since the incident happened.

He said, “We met him there on Friday morning and he has been there since then. We were told that he was caught scaling a fence at midnight and those who saw him decided to chase him. He was trying to run across to the other side when he ran into a vehicle that knocked him down.”

During a closer look, our correspondent discovered that he was still breathing as his legs moved at intervals.

Another business owner who identified himself simply as Sesan said he was initially lying on the bridge walkway before he rolled into the main road.”

“We saw him this morning on the main road. It was later that some LASTMA officials came to put a tyre behind him as a caution to prevent vehicles from climbing him.”

Meanwhile, a transport worker, Saheed Adekunle, has urged the state government to evacuate him from the spot before he gets run over by a vehicle.

He said, “We want the state government to come and remove him from here. If he spends longer time on the road where he is now, I am sure he will be crushed by a vehicle. The tyre LASTMA put there is not enough to stop that. Those trucks you see drive roughly and often climb the walkway. So, how much more on the road where is lying.”

All the calls made on Sunday to the spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, Nosa Okunbor, were not responded to while a text message sent to him had yet to be replied to when this report was filed.

Delta APC hails Okowa’s arrest

0

Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has lauded the arrest and detention of former Delta Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, saying “it is a positive step in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against corruption”.

“Okowa’s arrest signifies the administration’s dedication to tackling financial mismanagement and corruption at both state and federal levels,” the party further said.

This was made known in a statement signed by Delta APC State Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, copies of which were made available to journalists in Warri on Tuesday.

The According reports that Okowa, who served as the Governor of Delta State from 2015 to 2023, was on Monday arrested and detained by operatives of the EFCC over the alleged diversion of N1.3tn derivation fund.

The N1.3trn amounted to a 13 per cent derivation fund from the federation account between 2015 and 2023.

The erstwhile Delta governor was said to be at the EFCC office in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, following the invitation of the investigators probing the allegations against him, when he was subsequently nabbed and slammed with charges relating to alleged financial misconduct involving state funds and questionable contracts awarded during his time in office.

The party, in its statement, commended the Federal Government for its decisive action, urging the EFCC to continue its investigation into the financial dealings of other former governors and public officials.

Delta APC emphasised that Okowa’s arrest reflects a broader agenda “to curb corruption, promote transparency, and ensure that public funds benefit the citizens rather than serving personal interests”.

The statement partly read, “We in the APC wholeheartedly welcome the arrest of former Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, who oversaw one of the most concerning cases of financial mismanagement during his eight-year tenure.

“His administration allegedly funnelled significant state resources into personal ventures, including establishing a bank, financing a failed presidential ambition, and supporting the controversial imposition of a successor.

“The arrest serves as a caution to all public officeholders, affirming that the era of impunity is over and that no one, irrespective of position or political affiliation, is above the law.

“The fight against corruption must be thorough and unwavering, and we commend the administration’s efforts in this regard.”

The statement continued, “The legacy of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration is a high debt profile resulting from a reckless borrowing spree, which earned him the notorious nickname of ‘Borrow Borrow Governor’.

“During his eight years in office, Delta State has little to show for the vast federal allocations received.

The few substandard roads he constructed, often hailed as the ‘roadmaster,’ have deteriorated rapidly.”

Court remands man for allegedly killing 11-year old houseboy

0

A Chief Magistrate’s Court in Enugu East has remanded Anthony Onyeukwu, 47, over the death of his 11-year-old houseboy, Goodluck John.

The Commissioner of Gender, Ngozi Enih, revealed in a statement on Sunday that this move “is a part of Enugu State’s ongoing efforts to combat child abuse.”

Enih noted that Onyeukwu’s arrest followed a tip-off from the ministry’s whistleblower channels, suggesting that Goodluck’s death resulted from abuse within the household where he lived.

Onyeukwu was alleged to have hastily buried Goodluck’s remains in Abia State without reporting the death to the authorities, claiming the boy died from an illness at the Park Lane Hospital in Enugu. However, she said hospital records contradicted this claim, showing no admission or deposition of the corpse.

The statement disclosed that while arraigning the suspect last week, the Police Prosecutor, Inspector Calista Ifeanyi argued that Onyeukwu’s actions are punishable under Enugu State’s Revised Criminal Code saying that the case highlighted the state’s commitment to protecting children’s rights and preventing abuse, as outlined in the Child’s Rights and Responsibility Law of 2016.

The charge sheet marked: CME/631C/2024 read, “That you, Onyeukwu Anthony, ‘m’ on 15th day of October 2024, at about 20:30 hours at No. 4, Mike Onyeka Close, Loma Linda Extension, Maryland, Enugu, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did unlawfully kill one Goodluck John ‘m’ aged 11 years and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 274 (1) of the Criminal Code, CAP 30, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria, 2004.”

The Chief Magistrate subsequently ordered the suspect’s remand in the Correctional Centre, Enugu and, adjourned the matter to November 20, 2024, when the report from the Director of Public Prosecutions, Ministry of Justice, Enugu, would be expected.
