Police apprehend man for allegedly raping 5-yr-old girl in Gombe

A 27-year-old man has been taken into custody by the Gombe State Police Command on suspicion of defiling a five-year-old child in the Pindiga community of the state’s Akko Local Government.

While parading the suspect and others in Gombe on Tuesday, ASP Buhari Abdullahi, the command spokesperson, announced this.

According to Abdullahi, the suspect reportedly perpetrated the crime by luring the victim to his parlor.

He claims that once the girl was brought to the hospital for medical attention, a physician verified that she had been violated.

The PPRO added that the suspect was the subject of a report against him at the Pingiga police station on December 15 at approximately 8:30 a.m.

According to him, the suspect allegedly had sex with the 5-year-old after luring her to his house.

However, the aforementioned person was taken into custody once the complaint was received.

“For medical treatment and a doctor’s confirmation, the victim was taken to Cottage Hospital immediately,” he stated.

According to the police image maker, the suspect confessed to the alleged crime throughout the course of the inquiry and will face charges in court.

A murder suspect named Destiny Lawrence has been taken into custody by Delta State Police Command in relation to the killing of Progress Ifeanyi, an eight-year-old kid, in the Owa-Alero village.

In the police’s custody, the suspect is currently cooling off.

In addition, the police have begun a manhunt for a fugitive native physician named Jonah, who hired the apprehended suspect to transport the dead youngster to him in exchange for N30,000.

This was revealed in a statement by SP Bright Edafe, the police public relations officer.
According to the police image maker, on November 23, 2024, a resident of Owa-Alero (name withheld) reported that his 8-year-old son, Progress Ifeanyi, had vanished. The last word they had received was that one of their regular customers, Destiny Lawrence, had taken him away.

“But when he noticed his son was missing, he asked said Destiny, who denied knowing his son’s whereabouts.”

But later that day, Edafe claims, “his son’s body was discovered in an incomplete building, and some of his body parts were missing.”

After being taken into custody, the suspect, Destiny Lawrence, admitted during questioning that he had been hired by a native doctor from the Otolokpo village named Jonah to find a young child for him in exchange for N30,000.

“The native doctor then led the deceased to an incomplete building and slit his throat after he had enticed him to where he was waiting.”

“The suspect is in custody while a manhunt for the fugitive native doctor is ongoing,” Edafe continued.

The Dangote Refinery came online thanks to a $1 billion loan secured by crude oil, according to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

According to a Punch report, this was said by Olufemi Soneye, the chief corporate communications officer for the NNPCL, during the Energy Relations Stakeholders Engagement in Abuja on Monday, December 16.

“The Dangote Refinery was supported during liquidity issues by a calculated move to get a $1 billion loan guaranteed by NNPC’s crude, opening the door for the construction of Nigeria’s first private refinery.

He was cited as saying, “This initiative underscores NNPC’s dedication to fostering public-private partnerships that drive national development.”

Soneye did not, however, provide information about the terms of the arrangement or the payment procedures for the $1 billion that the NNPCL had obtained on behalf of Dangote Refinery.

He also alluded to the $3.3 billion Gazelle loan that the state-owned oil corporation facilitated as a crucial step to help stabilize the foreign exchange issue in the federation.

Recall that the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and the NNPCL announced a syndicated $3.3 billion crude oil prepayment facility in January of this year.

According to this organization, there are still unresolved issues about the $3.3 billion crude-for-cash loan from Afreximbank to NNPCL.

With the facility, the NNPCL aimed to stabilize the value of the Nigerian Naira, however several experts expressed concern about potential hazards.

The naira depreciated further against the dollar, from roughly N960 per dollar in January to N1,500 in December, in spite of the crude-for-cash agreement.
According to the bank, the transaction was one of the biggest syndicated debts created in Africa and the biggest crude-backed facility in Nigeria.

Bismarck Rewane, the CEO of Financial Derivatives Company Limited at the time, voiced concern about the NNPCL’s arrangements, stating that the naira had been under pressure in spite of them.

Additionally, they are given WhatsApp accounts associated with international phone numbers, particularly those from Italy and Germany.

They lure victims into purchasing on the alleged online investment shopping site, www.yooto.com, by posing as romantic partners and having fictitious business and investment chats. The platform charges an account activation fee of $35 USD for individuals who express interest.

According to the investigation, the requirement for hiring these young Nigerians is computer ability, particularly in the area of typing. Following a two-week indoctrination on how to pose as foreign women in romance scam chats and persuade victims to invest in their employers’ cryptocurrency investment fraud, those who passed the test are handed desktop computers and mobile devices.

“The foreigners would take over the actual task of defrauding the victims and proceed to block their Nigerian accomplices from the network once the Nigerians were able to gain the trust of the potential victims.” They would then be unaware of the transaction as a result.

Since they do not receive appointment letters or money from a corporate account, Nigerians are surprisingly unaware of the proprietors of the “company” they work for.

According to the results of the investigation, they are paid in cash or via a person’s account.
The scope of the scam and its perpetrators, as well as the possibility of any cooperation with international organized crime units, are still being investigated.

In this context, the Commission is collaborating closely with its international partners. Cars, laptops, mobile phones, and desktop computers were among the items found on the suspects.

In addition to having their systems tested, the suspects have given statements. They will be arraigned in court in the next few days and are presently being held under a legitimate remand warrant.

However, this arrest makes it quite evident that the idea that Nigerians are responsible for the numerous scams coming out of our nation is untrue. In order to get a footing and conceal their heinous criminal activities, foreigners are exploiting our country’s regrettable reputation as a haven for scammers. However, as this operation has demonstrated, Nigeria will not provide criminals with any hiding places.

In an effort to reduce public nuisance, Lagos State Environmental Task Force authorities arrested 17 individuals on Monday for allegedly engaging in street begging in various areas of the city. Eight children were among those taken into custody.
In a statement on X, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab stated: “On Monday, December 16, 2024, the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce monitored and conducted a special purpose operation against individuals who constitute public nuisance around the city.

“During the operation, 17 people—including 8 minors—who were engaged in the illegal activity of street begging during the hold-ups were apprehended.”

Major thoroughfares such as Alfred Rewane, Osborne, Alexandra, Burdillon in Ikoyi, and the Lekki-Ajah express corridor in Victoria Island were patrolled by the officials, according to the commissioner, “where destitute and miscreants were arrested and warded off.”

According to enabling laws, Mr. Wahab stated that those who were detained would be moved to the proper government facilities.

2027 Elections: Ex-APC Vice Chairman Urges Unity of Obasanjo, Others Against Tinubu

In a letter to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Salihu Moh Lukman, a former national vice chairman (North West) of the APC, urged him to rally previous Nigerian leaders in order to form a strong political alliance.

Concerns regarding the refusal of some opposition leaders, including three former governors, to unite under a common political platform because of their political aspirations were raised by Lukman in his letter.

This, according to Lukman, a former Director General of the APC’s Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF), has weakened earlier efforts to develop a strong alternative to the APC.

The letter, which was addressed to Obasanjo but also mentioned other former Nigerian leaders like Muhammadu Buhari, Goodluck Jonathan, Ibrahim Babangida, General Yakubu Gowon, and General Abdulsalami Abubakar, highlighted the role that previous leaders have played in forming the country’s current situation.

Lukman said, “Without playing games of blame, whether the leaders of this country today are created by God or Satan, you all together, individually and collectively, are the parents of today’s Satanic leaders of Nigeria.”

He denounced the historical practice of influencing political succession, seeing it as a persistent problem that exacerbates Nigeria’s political and socioeconomic problems.

Lukman claims that the custom of choosing successors has exacerbated the problems facing the country and led to the rise of “Satanic leaders.”

Lukman called for a political reorganization that would create a party that could develop “Godly” leadership.

He bemoaned the unwillingness of certain opposition leaders to work together, claiming that they put their own aspirations ahead of the group’s objective of advancing the country.

Lukman bemoaned the fact that certain opposition figures are already opposing attempts to create a unified political platform, primarily due to their side goals of running for office.

“If we can re-engineer our politics to produce at least one political party with the potential to produce leaders with Godly genotype, then Nigeria can produce leaders with Godly genotype and not Satanic genotype,” the letter said in part.

Due in large part to their side goals of running for office, several opposition figures are already opposing attempts to create a unified political platform. Some are already engaging in the traditional hegemonic games of assembly loyalists or cheerleaders as a result of these subsidiary goals.

Three of them have served as state governors in the past. Additionally, there is a group connected to one of the legacy parties that came together to establish the APC. This outfit is already creating a fictitious leadership lineup for a party that the opposition leaders will form.

“The so-called candidates for governorship have already been selected in numerous states. It seems sense since they already have a presidential contender with such a mindset.

Former Adamawa Governor Haruna Denies Bribing Judges Over 2003 Mandate

Boni Haruna, a former minister of youth development and two-time governor of Adamawa State, has cautioned the public against a social media trend that claims the Appeal Court Election Panel’s 2004 ruling, which reinstated his governorship mandate after it had been declared invalid by the Adamawa Election Petition Tribunal, was obtained with money transferred from his attorneys to the judges.

Although its proponents claim that this bold story is attributed to WikiLeaks Reports, he maintained that the news was false.

“I am appalled by the obvious inferences to influence peddling and bribery in a case whose outcome was hailed to have upheld the truth and nothing but the truth at the time that judgment was delivered by the Appeal Court Panel, soothing as it were the already frayed nerves of the voting populace of Adamawa State,” Governor Haruna said in a press release issued in Abuja.

It is both slanderous and defamatory to use such innuendo and heinous slander against my person and character, as well as against the person of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the distinguished Justices of the Appeal Panel, many of whom went on to the Supreme Court of Nigeria, the country’s highest court.

In order to draw conclusions about the state of the judiciary, the character of the judges, and the purported role of Afe Babalola chambers, the authors of this false story in the WikiLeaks report that claimed bribery to the Court of Appeal judges chose to rely on the report as if its contents were a divine holy book, he said, rather than the merit of the Appeal Court panel’s decision.

“If the people spreading this story use sensationalism, lies, and fabrications to destroy others, it will seem that they don’t care as much,” he stated.

“No judge who sat on the said appeal at the Court of Appeal Jos needed to be bribed to arrive at the painstaking judgment that was given as a careful reading of both judgments would easily reveal,” he said, pointing out that many people selling this story have never read the rulings of the Court of Appeal panel and the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.

“The verdict of the Appeal Court and the Election Tribunal differed significantly on their findings on the relevant facts that they beg the question of whether one verdict or the other may have been ‘influenced’ by outside parties,” he said, citing their widely publicized WikiLeaks report.

However, those who are attracted to sensationalism, regardless of how humorous their story may be, would prefer to limit it to the Court of Appeal panel’s ruling as the compromised ruling in order to appease their employers. They do this by relying on a fictitious account from an unnamed lawyer from Afe Babalola’s Chamber.

By quoting portions of the Appeal Panel’s decision, the so-called WikiLeaks report once more offered an explanation for the stark discrepancies between the Election Tribunal’s and the Appeal Panel’s judicial decisions: “The Appeal Court in Jos, however, found that the evidence used by the Election Tribunal was inadequate even to prove the simplest of a criminal offense, very impotent to affect the appellants/cross respondents with the commission of an electoral offense, and that the evidence was scandalous and naive as a basis for nullifying the election.”

To be able to believe in the erudition, authenticity, and self-evident truth in the Appeal Panel’s judgment, he said, purveyors of this story and those who might be duped by their false narratives and misleading conspiracy theories need to provide additional testimony. The Distinguished Jurist, Honourable Justice James Ogebe, JSC (Rtd), provided this proof in his 2020 autobiography, JUSTICE UNDER THE SHADOW OF THE ALMIGHTY.

He writes, among other things, on page 57, paragraph 2 of that book, “Three of us from the division were taken to Jos to hear Boni Haruna’s case from the Adamawa Governorship Tribunal despite the shortage of Justices.” Although Boni Haruna was elected governor of Adamawa State, the election tribunal declared his victory invalid. Governor Boni Haruna was reinstated after the appeal was considered by a panel of five justices, including myself, Francis Ogbuagu, Pius Aderemi, Musa Muhammad, and Victor Omage. We thought the tribunal’s ruling was strange. The panel ultimately considered the evidence that was rejected during the hearings in its ruling.

Remarkably, according to Boni Haruna, Hon. Justice James Ogebe JSC (Rtd) in a press release has not only denied the bribery claims made in the WikiLeaks reports, but he has also offered to look into the claims that his Honorable self and his fellow Justices of the Appeal Court—three of whom are now late—were bought off by the Afe Babalola chambers to render the decision that overturned the previous Adamawa State Governorship Election Tribunal’s verdict.

Instead of believing the false information being promoted in the WikiLeaks reports, Governor Haruna has advised all astute minds to study the judgments, which are all publicly available records, and make their own judgments.

Nigeria Seeks $1.65 Billion World Bank Loan for Three Projects in 2025

According to a World Bank statement on its website, the Nigerian government hopes to be approved for a $1.65 billion loan in 2025.

Three major projects put out by the Nigerian government would be up for decision-making by the global bank in 2025.

Politics Nigeria is aware that the loan is intended to help the nation overcome some of its developmental shortcomings.

A commitment of $300 million has been proposed for the first loan project, Solutions for the Internally Displaced and Host Communities Project, which is scheduled to be approved by the World Bank on April 8, 2025.

According to the administration, the loan will assist in addressing the nutritional and educational issues that IDPs nationwide confront.

Additionally, the second project, called HOPE for Quality Basic Education for All, has a $553.8 million commitment and an approval deadline of March 20, 2025.

Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria 2.0, the third and final initiative, has a projected $800 million funding fund with an approval deadline of February 20, 2025.

On February 20, 2025, the international financing institution will convene to select the projects and grant further permission if required.

ADC Vows to Stop Serving as Political Special Purpose Vehicle

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) said yesterday that it will no longer be used as a unique political vehicle.

Speaking before the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, ADC national chairman Dr. Ralphs Okey Nwosu stated that politicians will no longer use and dump it.

A special purpose vehicle, as used in Nigerian politics, is a different political party that candidates use to run for office after losing or leaving their first party.

However, Nwosu revealed that the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) has been able to settle disagreements and bring members together behind a single political platform, despite his criticism of Nigerian politicians’ lack of political ideology.

Nwosu pointed out that the ADC would have been involved in Nigerian elections for 20 years by 2027.

“We need to get it right after 20 years. We need to go forward, therefore if I upset you, now is the moment to forgive.

“Large coalitions like the one we are forming with PRP are necessary. I want us to arrive with a loving heart. “Our party will be the most popular party in Nigeria by 2025,” he promised.

Since its founding in 2006, ADC has run presidential candidates. However, following the elections, the candidates consistently leave the party.

A polarized party resulted from the same pattern in the most recent 2023 election.

But according to Nwosu, the party has started the process of rebuilding and has removed the ban imposed on certain members.

He claimed that the NEC meeting signaled a fresh start, particularly during the season of Christmas, when people are supposed to express their affection for one another.

He added that peace has returned to ADC with INEC’s ADR and that Nigeria must begin developing institutions that will endure.

Why do we only elect a small number of people to political office? He questioned, “Why can’t we have the majority in the house?”

According to Nwosu, “some of us will end up working in the villa; some of you will be elected into offices,” and ADC would rise to the top of the political rankings in the nation. The possibilities will be endless once we accomplish this.

The meeting on the verification exercise was attended by INEC officials as well.

Your Dreams Are Within Reach, Mariam Mohammed Encourages Youth at Maktoub Forum

Last weekend, hundreds of young people were gathered by Ms. Mariam Mohammed, the founder of Maktoub Media, who encouraged them to persevere in their goals in spite of growing challenges.

As part of her annual birthday celebration, Mohammed gave a speech in Abuja at the 2024 Maktoub Youth Forum (MYF) with the theme “Ignite, Inspire, Impact.”

Mohammed, who expressed gratitude for the large turnout, clarified that the forum’s objectives were to encourage young people to strive for leadership, emotional intelligence, job advancement, personal development, and assisting prospective young people in creating a career roadmap.

She clarified that it was a call to action for the youth of Nigeria, imploring them to follow their aspirations with the necessary fervor.

She emphasized, however, that in order to succeed in life, students must be prepared to deal with the drawbacks and challenges that accompany personal development, noting that one of the program’s goals was to lessen these dangers.

You are aware that everything has drawbacks. Programs like these have the drawback of reopening long-suppressed wounds. Many believe that running a mentorship program is ostentatious. However, it isn’t. Because you have to share your journey to get here, you are essentially a test subject during this program.

And I won’t lie to you: those stories aren’t always very good. Telling those experiences often makes you cry, not because you’re weak, but rather because you’re in shock that you’ve come this far. You would understand it if we all stood here and told you our tales of how we arrived to where we are now.

“You recall instances in which you have surrendered and given up. At times, it even reaches the point of wanting to terminate everything. In order to help you avoid the mistakes we made in life and to help you overcome obstacles—perhaps not completely, but sufficiently to get by—we host programs like this one to let you know that we are your test subjects. This is due to the fact that you will encounter obstacles throughout life.

She informed the youth, “These programs help you understand that those upper cuts will heal and all you need are teachers here and there and you will be fine.”

Additionally, Aisha Mohammed, an Assistant Controller with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), warned the young people that while social media may still be a tool for good in many ways, it can also be used to cause harm.

She advised the participants to avoid being duped by what they see on social media and to not believe everything they read online.

Our lives now revolve around social media, but it’s important to recognize the difference between the two. What we portray to the public on social media and who we really are are never the same. Numerous social, political, spiritual, and economic difficulties in society at large stem from this disparity.

Perception, projection, and intentional programming are key components of social media. Because you constantly compare yourself to what other people are posting, which isn’t the reality, the pressure to project a flawless online persona can generate feelings of inadequacy and unhappiness. We are all aware that those things are not genuine.

“Even if someone is starving, they can post on social media that they just completed a fantastic dinner, and someone else will see it and think, I must do this. Or someone posts something that isn’t real, like “I just got a Rolls Royce, I just got a Range Rover.” It’s possible that the individual simply visited a car dealership, took a photo, and uploaded it to the internet.

Therefore, we make an effort to educate young people about the fact that not everything we see online is true. And discovering who you are makes you feel unworthy of living, despite the fact that there are instances of people killing themselves via cyberbullying, social media, and, as I previously stated, sexual assault,” she emphasized.

She advised the youth to embrace who they are and refrain from evaluating themselves or their accomplishments against those of others.

In her remarks, a Public Health Professional, Fatima Mamman-Daura, urged the youths not to feel resentment when they think they are underachieving, exhorting them to find a passion and nurture it.

“ Passion makes everything easier and more enjoyable to pursue your dreams and ethically too. Recognize your onions. Make your intelligence your greatest asset. In your early career, I think this is when it is most important, you should soak up all the knowledge that you can and learn all the skills that you can.

“Technical skills get you the recognition and then it moves you up the career ladder. Produce exceptional quality work. Go the extra mile. Cross all the T’s and dot all the I’s. Do not be lazy,” she advised.

Besides, she urged them to practice soft skills, emotional intelligence, and people management, stressing that as they move up the career trajectory from managers to leaders, they will need less technical skills and more conceptual skills.

“You will need things like communication, problem solving, team building, conflict resolution, resource mobilisation, crisis management, critical thinking, etc.,” she pointed out.

Other persons present at the event were: Son of the President, Seyi Tinubu, Channels TV Presenter, Seun Okinbaloye, who spoke on the topic: “Unbroken: Transforming Personal Pain into Springboards for Success,” among others.

The annual event encourages youths to discover, explore and maximise their natural potential and create a better future for themselves in spite of all hurdles.
