Wike’s aide responds to ex-minister Dalung’s remarks on FCT roads

Lere Olayinka, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, has briefed Solomon Dalung, the former Minister of Youths and Sports, on road building in the nation’s capital.

In a statement released Friday, Olayinka questioned how Dalung’s wish to promote his distaste for Wike and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration could wipe reality out of his mind, leading him to declare on live television that “road projects in the FCT do not translate to development because such projects do not touch the general wellbeing of the people.”

Since many Nigerians lack cars, Dalung, whose time as Minister of Youth and Sports was utterly terrible, even went so far as to argue that dualization or road construction cannot be highlighted as development, according to Olayinka.

Roads are only helpful to Nigerians who own cars, according to someone who saw Nigeria’s repeated failures to qualify for the Nations Cup. How naive the thinking is!

“It is odd that in the perspective of a former minister, when projects like the construction of the Saburi–Dei Dei road, the 5km Dutse-Usuma Dam road, the War College/Army Checkpoint and other ancillary roads within the Bwari Area Council, the 25km Kwaita/Yebu road in Kwali Area Council, the 11km Yangoji-Sukuku-Ebo road in Kwali Area Council, and the 9km Paikon Kore/Ibwa road are finished, they won’t result in any development,” the FCT Minister’s spokesperson said.

Additionally, only Nigerians with cars are permitted to utilize the 11km Kuje Road and the 11km Aguma Palace – Radio Nigeria – New Market Road in the Gwagwalada Area Council; those without cars will not.

“Among other things, the FCT Minister officially opened the building of a 12-kilometer Kabusa-Ketti road, a 7-kilometer Kabusa-Takushara road, and a 15-kilometer road connecting Pia in Kwali Area Council to the A2 Junction Abuja-Lokoja road in December 2024.

“Dalung also believes that the roads being built in satellite towns like Kabusa, Ketti, Takushara, and the Lokoja route connecting Pia will not have a single developmental function once they are finished.

However, given that his primary trademark has continued to spew out of outlandish remarks, one is not shocked.

When the Super Falcons’ allowances were delayed during their participation in the 2016 African Women Championship in Ghana, for example, he instructed reporters, “Remember that no one even knew the team (Super Falcons) would win.” The federation would have only planned for the participation and entitlement process if we were certain they would win.

National Assembly approves N126bn for INEC under 2025 budget amid pressure

The National Assembly’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Electoral Matters Joint Committee has given in to pressure for the commission’s N126 billion budget proposal in the 2025 Appropriations Act.

INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu noted that Nigerian elections have grown to be a significant expense that requires sufficient money, which is why the Commission had previously rejected the N40 billion annual allocation set aside for it by the Committee.

When he led a team to defend the electoral body’s budget projections at the National Assembly in Abuja this Friday, Prof. Mahmood remarked

The INEC Boss clarified during his presentation to Senator Sarafadeen Alli (APC Oyo South) that “the provision requires the sum of over N126 billion in our proposal for the 2025 budget.”

“We have the document that outlines our intended use of the 126 billion dollars, line by line.

In order to fulfill our obligations under the first line charge—the majority of which are constitutional—we would like the National’s assistance.

To put it briefly, the N40 billion budget envelope that has been provided for 2025 would not cover one-third of the anticipated costs, which adds up to more than N126 billion.

He continued by saying that the electoral commission had to obtain N10.5 billion in intervention funds for the 2024 Edo and Ondo elections and an additional N500 million for bye-elections in the impacted areas due to the N40 billion budget envelope’s insufficiency.

Members of the joint committee, perhaps persuaded by INEC’s suggestion, successively promised the electoral body that the proposed amount will be budgeted for in the fiscal election of 2025.

“The situation at hand is not about looking for the N126 billion for INEC in 2025 fiscal year but providing it,” stated Senator Ireti Kingibe (LP FCT).

The 2025 Port Harcourt International Polo Tournament is expected to feature 68 polo players from South Africa, England, Argentina, and Nigeria.
The Nigerian Polo Association (NPA) and the Port Harcourt Polo Club will host the competition, which is scheduled for January 12–18.

The tournament has become one of Nigeria’s main flagships as it has drawn polo fans and patrons from both inside and beyond the country throughout the years.

Prince Henry Agbodjan, president of the Port Harcourt Polo Club, stated that the competition, which has as its theme “Unity in Motion,” intends to give polo fans all around the country a fun and exciting experience.

In addition to the contests, he said, fans may anticipate entertainment performances and chances to buy reasonably priced goods from the tournament’s Micro Market.

Agbodjan said, “The event will serve as a major commercial boost for the Rivers State economy.”
