Criticism of Buhari: Sen. Adamu knocks Obasanjo

0

By Timothy Aiyeku

Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District, has expressed concern over the manner former President Olusegun Obasanjo, criticised President Muhammadu Buhari.

Adamu, who stated this while briefing newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday, said Obasanjo’s criticisms of Buhari was not dignifying.

He was reacting to a recent report credited to the former president, where he said he was not neutral regarding his support for a specific presidential candidate in the 2019 general elections.

Adamu said: “while he is entitled to criticise and also campaign against the re-election bid of Buhari, he should not be pedestrian in doing that.

“What was Obasanjo’s record in office when he ran this country first from Feb. 1976 to Oct. 1979, and subsequently from May 1999 to May 2007.

“Would there have been the desperate and notoriously corrupt bid for a third term in office that was witnessed by Nigerians if he had a good record by then,” Adamu said.

According to the Senator, under Obasanjo’s watch, most of Nigeria’s strategic investments were sold without much to show as returns to the nation.

“No Nigerian of repute who knows Obasanjo’s antecedents will be surprised at his current criticism of Buhari.

“He is going off the line of fair comment in this circumstance, and I believe eminent citizens of this country need to call him to order,” he said.

Buhari to reward hard work, loyalty

President Muhammadu Buhari has inaugurated “Together Nigeria’’, a support group and assured his supporters that handwork and loyalty would henceforth be adequately rewarded.

The event was organised by the Buhari Support Organisation.

Buhari, who expressed gratitude to the organisation, said, “some individuals and organisations might be feeling disappointed because we have not been able to please everyone.

“I would like to assure you that this time, handwork and loyalty will be rewarded adequately.’’

According to the President, the event reminds him of the political struggle and support he has been enjoying from the group over the years.

He, therefore, endorsed the plan put in place by the Buhari Support Organisation to reposition the organisation and strategise towards success in the next election and beyond.

“This once again gives me further encouragement, hope and optimism in our political journey,” Buhari said.

While acknowledging the overwhelming nationwide support he has been enjoying over the years, Buhari said his administration was already celebrating the landmark achievements so far recorded.

He expressed gratitude to the group for sensitising Nigerians to the successes recorded by the governing All Progressive Congress (APC).

He also expressed appreciation to the Nigerian celebrities for their contributions to the growth of the country’s entertainment industry as well as projecting the good image of Nigeria abroad.

“I would like to thank our celebrities for projecting the image of Nigeria globally and your contributions to our entertainment industry,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ‘Together Nigeria’, which is made up of Nigerian celebrities, is an advocacy group supporting the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

Dunamis Church storms IDPs camps in Plateau State with relief materials (PHOTOS)

0

Days after its commission, news about the 100,000-capacity Dunamis International Gospel Centre continues to resonate.

The newly commissioned edifice, the largest of its kind in Africa (or world) was tagged the Eighth Wonder of the World.

For many in Christendom, the magnificent worship centre is inspiring, even as they marvel and give glory to God and kudos to the church and her leadership.

However, what many don’t know is the unending humanitarian work of the ministry that has been going on silently for many years.

A recently conducted investigation has uncovered several developmental projects conceived and executed by the ministry.

The church, under the leadership of its founding and senior pastor, Dr. Paul Enenche, and his wife, Dr. Mrs. Becky Paul-Enenche, had commissioned not fewer than 25 of such projects across the country, spreading across towns and villages.

The church has been succor to victims of various calamities who ended as Internally Displace Person (IDPs).

In this charitable exercise, Dunamis ministry even surpassed the federal government in the provision of relief materials to victims.

This was further confirmed on December 8, 2018 during a Sunday service by a Plateau State indigene who stormed the Dunamis Glory Dome to thank the church for coming to the aid of the community with relief materials.

According to the visibly excited Plateau native, who gave his name as Joel Choji, the IDPs from community are grateful to God and thankful to the Enenche-led ministry for the items they donated.

He said, “I want to give testimony to the glory of God on behalf of my community for what this church and the Senior Pastor have done for our community.

“Recently, the crisis in Plateau State wiped away our community and Daddy sent relief materials to the IDP camps.

“I was in Jos last week and they called me and were celebrating. They asked me to tell my pastor that they are grateful for the items he sent. They said this is how church is supposed to be (sic).
“They told me that even the churches where they worship did not send any relief material to them,” he said.

His testimony further reinforced the statements of Prof. Dennis Ityavyar, Benue State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, who earlier this year affirmed that the revered clergy and the church brought reliefs for the IDPs in Benue in a proportion that surpassed the federal government donation.

A source in the church confirmed that Dr. Enenche had placed an embargo on publicity of any sorts regarding the church’s charity activities.

Hence, a lot of the church’s outreaches go unsung. According to him, the minister is a man of great modesty, whatever good the church does should be kept away from the limelight and public glare and would be rewarded publicly by God.

Interestingly, findings by our reporter have confirmed that the ministry actually embarked on this particular humanitarian act on October 8, 2018 even while in the heat of preparation for the Glory Dome dedication. This is just one set of the so many similar outreaches by this ministry over the years.

In the wake of the plateau crisis truck loads of relief materials were distributed by the church to the major IDP camps in Angludi, Riyom and Heipang areas of the state.

Among some items sighted by this reporter included hundreds of bags of rice, over 500 mattresses, cartons of noodles numbering over 200, slippers, detergents, sachet tomatoes, toiletries, wears and several others.

Here are some of the pictures we obtained.

Amnesty International accused of working against Nigerian military over war crimes report

0

A human rights body, Conflict Resolution and Human Rights in Nigeria, has accused Amnesty International of planting fictitious stories against the Nigerian military.

Recall that the International Criminal Court (ICC) had in a report released on Monday, claimed that Nigerian Security Forces (NSF) have committed war crimes against humanity.

The ICC report claimed it had received “a total of 169 communications” from Nigeria and its assessment has shown that security forces in Nigeria have committed war crimes varying from murder, torture, and intentionally attacking the civilian population.

However, the Army dismissed the allegations, describing it as a figment of the writer’s imagination.

http://dailypost.ng/2018/12/12/nigerian-army-speaks-guilty-war-crime/

Speaking on the development, the body accused the Amnesty International of planting the report to cause confusion in Nigeria and as well rubbish the efforts of the Nigerian military.

Onuoha G.C Esq, Executive Director of the coalition at a press conference on Wednesday, dared the organization to present the kind of evidence it claims to have before the ICC so that the world would see if they would stand up to scrutiny.

He said, “In recent days, we have observed the intensification of a campaign of calumny being run by foreign NGO, Amnesty International against the Nigerian Military.

“The main talking points of the renewed campaign are: “Nigerian Military has committed and is committing human right abuses. Nigerian military is shielding terrorists.

“These are false claims that have been made repeatedly in the past to an extent that right thinking people have learnt to not set stock in them. If Amnesty International has the kind of evidence it claims to have the natural order of things would have been for it to present them before the ICC so that the world would see if these claims would stand up to scrutiny.

“What is playing out however is for the same old hogwash of launching this kind of propaganda each time the Nigerian Military is making gains against Boko Haram terrorists or any other group that is troubling the Nigerian state.

“For a few weeks in the last quarter of this year, Boko Haram terrorists, with some unknown internationally injected support, attacked several military outposts and caused casualties in some instances yet there was no whimper from Amnesty International to call for international outrage against the killings.

“We advise Amnesty International to focus on what it needs to do, which is to make atonement in all the countries of the world where it has sowed the kind of discord it is trying to sow in Nigeria.

“It has been in the business of lying against armies that stand against terrorists while doing everything to shield the terrorists from retribution. It is no wonder that even the NGO is a victim of its own evil enterprise.”

US tags Boko Haram terrorists ‘particular concern’

The United States has announced the designation of the Boko Haram terrorist group as an entity “of particular concern”.

The U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo in a statement, designated Boko Haram alongside the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), al-Qa’ida and al-Shabab.

Pompeo also designated Saudi Arabia, Iran, Burma, North Korea, among “countries of particular concern”, while Comoros, Russia, and Uzbekistan were placed on “special watch list”.

”On November 28, 2018, I designated Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, as Countries of Particular Concern under the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 for having engaged in or tolerated ‘systematic, ongoing, (and) egregious violations of religious freedom.

”I also placed Comoros, Russia, and Uzbekistan on a Special Watch List for governments that have engaged in or tolerated ‘severe violations of religious freedom.

”Finally, I designated al-Nusra Front, al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula, al-Qa’ida, al-Shabab, Boko Haram, the Houthis, ISIS, ISIS-Khorasan, and the Taliban as Entities of Particular Concern,” Pompeo said.

The U.S. top diplomat regretted that in far too many places across the globe, individuals continue to face harassment, arrests, or even death for simply living their lives in accordance with their beliefs.

Pompeo said: “The United States will not stand by as spectators in the face of such oppression.

”Protecting and promoting international religious freedom is a top foreign policy priority of the Trump Administration.

”In July, I hosted the first-ever Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom, which brought together some 85 like-minded governments and more than 400 civil society organisations to harness global attention and motivate forceful action to advance respect for the human right of religious freedom”.

According to him, safeguarding religious freedom is vital to ensuring peace, stability, and prosperity.

”These designations are aimed at improving the lives of individuals and the broader success of their societies.

”I recognise that several designated countries are working to improve their respect for religious freedom; I welcome such initiatives and look forward to continuing the dialogue.

“The United States remains committed to working with governments, civil society organisations, and religious leaders to advance religious freedom around the world,” Pompeo said.

The Boko Haram terrorist activities have claimed thousands of people’s lives, and affected millions of families, leaving behind huge humanitarian crises, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

“The humanitarian crisis in North East Nigeria that has spilled into neighbouring Cameroon, Chad and Niger, is one of the most severe in the world today.

“In North East Nigeria, 10 years of conflict has left more than seven million people in dire need of help in the three worst-affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.

“About 1.8 million people are internally displaced. People need food, water, shelter and health services,” the UN agency said

2019: ‘North will vote for President Buhari in 2019’ – Former Senate President, Ebute replies Ango Abdulahi

0

Former Senate President, Ameh Ebute, has replied the convener of Northern Elders’ Forum, NUF, Professor Ango Abdullahi, on his recent assertion that the region will not vote President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential election.

Abdullahi, a former Vice Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, had while speaking to newsmen in Zaria as part of activities to mark his 80th birthday, also advocated for a return to parliamentary system of government, stressing that the system was more accountable than the presidential system.

Responding to Abdullahi’s submission, Ebute in a rejoinder forwarded to our reporter on Wednesday, insisted that the NUF chairman would not decide for the entire north.

The former lawmaker warned Abdullahi to retract the “shameful public statement” credited to him and retrace his steps, or risk running NEF as a one-man show.

He rejoinder reads.

I am extremely pained to publicly address Professor Ango Abdullahi on a matter I consider very important for regional cohesion and the stability of Nigeria.

However, in the prevailing circumstances, I have no choice than to do the needful in view of his recent vitriolic comments against the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR and his 2019 reelection bid.

No doubt, Prof. Ango Abdullahi is a respected academic, elder and son of the North. He is a brilliant man and the fourth indigenous Vice Chancellor of the premier and prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, (ABU) Zaria. I deem him a reference point anytime, Northern history comes into focus.

Ango’s convening of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) was a laudable initiative embraced by all of us. We sensed reason in his explanations of why elders of Northern extraction should have a common platform where they could congregate, brainstorm on issues affecting the North, lobby the central government to solve them and play advisory roles to the younger generation and the government when necessary.

We perceived these issues as very important and germane, hence the respected Alhaji Maitama Sule, (may his soul rest in peace) a former Ambassador to the United Nations, an Danmasanin Kano, agreed to serve as NEF’s pioneer chairman. That was the veneration NEF attracted.

With other prominent Northerners such as Wantaregh Paul Unongo a former minister of Power and Steel in the Second Republic, serving as NEF’s Vice Chairman, alongside an array of other officials, NEF was run purposefully and meaningfully in consonance with its original idea to which we were all signatories.

We have never had issues within NEF because we adhered strictly to its core mandate, doctrine and operational principles of neutrality and non-partisanship.

But it appears we are reversing ourselves now, after the demise of Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule. NEF’s leadership has fallen on Prof. Ango Abdullahi. I regret to say, he is not dispensing this leadership in consonance with the core operational principles of NEF to which we all subscribed and have observed religiously over time.

I wish to remind Prof. Ango Abdullahi that NEF was conceived as an apolitical organization. Therefore, the recent widespread public statement, published in various media, which claimed members of NEF have dumped the 2019 reelection bid of President Buhari, credited to Prof. Ango Abdullahi is extremely in bad faith. It abuses the sacred guiding principles upon which NEF was founded; derived its strength and endorsed by the rest of us.

For clarity sake, I wish to remind this NEF convener that NEF has not met in recent times and adopted a common position on the rejection or acceptance of the reelection bid of President Buhari or any other candidate vying for the office of the President of Nigeria in 2019.

The public statement credited to Ango in all ramifications came to me as a rude shock. And I dare say, it is an abuse of his right to freedom of speech by aligning his personal thoughts with a group, which is not part of his thinking on the matter canvassed.

Already, there are dissenting voices against this apparent insensitivity and absurdity as propagated by Prof. Ango Abdullahi. We cannot accept anybody’s personal desire to drag NEF into public ridicule or partisanship, except Ango wishes to be its sole owner, as convener, chairman, secretary, publicist and the rest.

Thus far, I completely and faithfully align myself with the position of objection to Prof. Ango Abdullahi’s posture by my other Northern elders, majority in silence, but others vocal like the trio of Maj. Gen. Paul Tarfa, Capt. Basir Sodangi and Sani Daura.

I find it pertinent to state that even the issues raised by Prof. Ango Abdullahi’s abhorrent statement such as insecurity, underdevelopment and poverty in the North under the Buhari Presidency are interrogated from a porous, biased and self-serving perspective.

We all acknowledge that the North and indeed, Nigeria deserves to be freed from the tethers of these nagging problems. What has baffled me is the deliberate refusal of Prof. Ango Abdullahi to critical and holistically assess the situation with an open and uninfluenced mind.

I cannot accept, much like many other Northern elders that insecurity in the country is worse under President Buhari. It was worse when our President mounted the saddle of leadership in Nigeria in 2015. President Buhari started from ground zero, but has made commendable progress over these problems.

The failure of the likes of Ango to see and appreciate the efforts and energies channeled into decimating and defeating Boko Haram insurgency in the North only conveys a personal hatred against the Buhari Presidency.

I expect Ango and those in his camp to speak to leaders of thought in the North. They should be concerned with engaging and dissuading their youths who are excitedly serving as hirelings to exacerbate the insecurity situation in the country in order to reverse the gains already recorded by the Buhari Presidency. Ango and co-travellers should not find this as a platform to castigate and vilify President Buhari.

President Buhari has taken steps to address the massive youth unemployment across Nigeria, including the North, with the N-Power jobs, even if we pretend not to see his laudable agricultural policies which have created millions of jobs with three years of his administration.

Prof. Ango Abdullahi cannot be preaching to us underdevelopment of the North at this material time because it is a culture sustained for decades. In spite of it, President Buhari is prudently and fairly distributing meagre national resources in solving underdevelopment issues across Nigeria. The North has gotten its fair share, just like other regions in the country.

President Buhari is the political leader of Nigeria and not that of the North alone as Prof. Ango insinuates. It is senseless for Ango and cohorts to expect that Buhari superintends over skewed sharing or distribution of Nigeria’s commonwealth in favour of the North. As elders, I believe this disposition and thinking is faulty.

I am highly uncomfortable with Prof. Ango Abdullahi’s excessive mouthing in public domain in the guise of speaking for NEF. Our duty as elders is to encourage leaders to sit-up where we perceive lapses, as against outright partisan campaigns against leaders as Ango delights in doing.

Prof. Ango Abdullahi should retrace his steps. If President Buhari fails to grant NEF audience to discuss these issues, why is the public platform he has used in vilifying the President, not used as channel of advice to Mr. President? It speaks of a personal agenda, which I am encouraged to say, has missed the target.

Other Northern elders like me, at both personal and collective level, will keep supporting President Buhari on his redemption mission of Nigeria. We have seen and felt the positive impact of his administration. Where he is lacking, we would rather advise him privately. So, the attempt by Ango to bifurcate NEF with his personal political agenda is reprehensible and unacceptable to the rest of us.

Like others, I stand, with President Buhari and the excitement of Prof. Ango Abdullahi to mask under NEF will not change it.

I advise him to retract this shameful public statement credited to him and retrace his steps, or risk running NEF as a one-man show.

Nigerian Military And The Act Of Victory

Nigerian Military And The Act Of Victory

By Richards Murphy

Sun Tzu, the Chinese war veteran, strategist and tactician of world repute, throbs military leaders with this enriching warfare philosophy. Its catchy phrase prescribes thus; “What the ancients called a clever fighter is one who not only wins, but excels in winning with ease.”

I know some Nigerians would be surprised at what prodded me to begin the exploration of this piece with this enthralling wisdom of Gen. Sun Tzu. It’s because Sun Tzu remains the most coveted encyclopedia of war shrewdness ever exposed to mankind.

Tzu was somewhat magical, if not prodigiously extraordinary in thoughts and actions. No frustrations or setback of the enemy ever dissolved his resolve and determination to win. It is the innate inclination of a soldier.

Of course, many of us have read the military exploits and adventures of this great Chinese military celeb. All over the world, craggy military officers, who aim at victories in battles, imbibe his wisdom and style in combats. They are inspired by his combat wits, tenacity and valor. They strive to emulate him.

And for three years and more, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Gabriel Abayomi Olonisakin knows, he is not just the super engine room of President Muhammadu Buhari’s counter-terrorism war in the country. But the march to terminate the reign of Boko Haram terrorism is an assignment, which must be won and splendidly.

His mien all the times, tells me, the CDS cum military strategist is less concerned by setbacks in the counter-insurgency operations. But he is a thousand times concerned with extracting the victory from terrorists, at the cost of anything.
It is indubitable that anywhere wars are fought; there are countless entrapping impediments and challenges, which can cancel even an already won victory. But careful deployment of uncommon wisdom and the utilization of every resource at your disposal earn you the victories.

And I believe, there is no military rendezvous in warfare, which victory comes easy and smooth. Despite Sun Tzu’s versatility in warfare and acclaimed expertise, not all his victories came on platter gold. To be candid to myself, I have a passion for this warrior. What he never consented was a weakened spirit at the battlefront.

At all times and in all circumstances, he was confident victory would descend at dawn undeniably and kept cracking the hardest of nuts. And truly, he got the results in his favour.

But in the course of the usually stiff struggles peculiar to the trenches, I don’t want to believe there were no depressing moments’ or the unexpected never happened, such as troops vehicle accident or death on the warfront. But Tzu’s sheer determination and the courage to succeed kept the candle burning to a victorious end.

I see a facsimile of this resilience in Gen. Olonisakin. When any of his troops is mowed down in battle by enemy forces, it gives him sleepless nights. But it has never enfeebled his determination to the point of surrendering to the enemies of his troops and the nation. Instead, it spurs more grandeur planning and deafening confrontations of the enemies more vehemently.

Throughout the time, I keenly observed the actions and dispositions of the CDS in the engagement of Boko Haram insurgents; no challenge or setback in the prosecution of the war has slackened his pace and focus even for a minute. This is reason the Nigerian military has sustained the winning streaks against terrorists. Insurgents attacks on military formations has now bubbled by a personal revenge in the hearts of troops.

That’s the lesson taught troops by the archetypal Gen. Olonisakin. As a true and inveterate Military General, coordinating and leading counter-terrorism operations in Nigeria deemed one of the world’s most difficult wars has been his passion to end a glorious career.

The CDS has conditioned the minds of his troops to have their eyes fixated on victory; and only victory, at all times, regardless of any obstacle. The CDS knows the whiff of victory is what keeps an Army or a troop going in a battle.

I am glad they have not deviated from this path of glory. And troops have lived it and appear even better at their most tormenting moments; which outsiders like me fear a possible retreat. This is the victorious side of our military, unknown to many of us.

I have observed consistently that whenever Boko Haram terrorists roar against our troops, with such gusto, reenacting their triumphant past, the insurgents deployed for the missions hardly escape unscathed.

We may not know. But many of us have not heard the voice and braggadocio of Boko Haram factional leader, Abubakar Shekau for a long time now. The last time I heard about him was six or so, months ago, when he led his rebellious sect members in tempting Nigerian troops.

The insurgents were not only munched en mass by Nigerian troops, but their Kingpin, Shekau quite possibly escaped with severe injuries. Some reports claim, Shekau has hoed himself in the Cameroonian caves and mountains recuperating. It’s possible he must have died in the course of treatment.

The only factional Boko Haram leader still flexing feeble might is the Musab Al Barnewi faction. But I am sure, fragrance of his day of reckoning have polluted everywhere in the Northeast. I know his waterloo is also near.

And it is one conviction, which has persistently obsessed Gen. Olonisakin. He knows he can do it; the troops are confident that Al Barnewi cannot escape their swords, no matter the hardness of the bulwark he erects around himself.

With ground and air troops at his effective command and control, the CDS is pretty sure, the enemies have; but little chances of survival. Only time is the dividing factor, which he also knows would soon decide in the favor of Nigerian troops and Nigerians. The CDS like the veteran Tzu is aware, “What is essential in war is victory, not prolonged operations.”

Like Sun Tzu, the CDS knows too perfectly that; “When torrential water tosses boulders, it is because of its momentum. When the strike of a hawk breaks the body of its prey, it is because of timing.”

I appeal to Nigerians to look beyond the outward when assessing our military. We are bound to see the treasures embedded in them which are envied by the world. We must be proud of our possession and our military assets in these troops.

The military gentleman and unstinting professional officer, Gen. Olonishakin is eager to handover to Nigerians the crown and medal victory over Boko Haram terrorism. I read his lips and feel the yearning of a leader who wishes to accomplish this feat as his parting gift to Nigerians before his retirement.

Gen. Olonisakin knows he has an edge over the terrorists, by leading three arms of the Nigerian military. But the insurgents can only dream of repressing or even defeating the Nigerian military.

It’s clear to me, coordinating the security operations across the country, the CDS adheres to Tzu’s caution that “Management of many is the same as management of few. It is a matter of organization.” We shall keep praying for their success fervently.

Anti-corruption is battle for soul of Africa

0

By Timothy Aiyeku

President Muhammadu Buhari has launched the training for Anti-Corruption Agencies in the African Union where he told participants that the fight against corruption is a battle for the souls of the countries and it is one that must be won.

He made the remarks in Abuja on Monday when he welcomed delegates to the Corruption Risk Assessment training for heads and senior officials of Anti-Corruption Agencies in the African Union.

The training, he said, was at the instance of Nigeria as part of the support for the war against corruption on the continent and it is being facilitated by the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria (ACAN) the research and training arm of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

He said that the continent has suffered from the severe consequences of corruption since independence and said it was imperative that steps be taken to reverse the trend.

“When we assumed office in May 2015, the pervasive nature and devastating impact of corruption on the Nigerian nation had become dysfunctional. The momentum for our electoral victory could not be separated from the revolt of the people against glaring endemic corruption.

“During the past several months, we have been taking steps to institute integrity and transparency in the processes of government and holding those who have plundered our commonwealth to account for their actions.

President Muhammadu Buhari (M) flanked by the ICPC Acting Chairman, Dr Musa Usman Abubakar and anti-corruption agencies in Africa

“However, the costs of recovery and sanctions are also enormous. While commendable successes have been recorded, it has become manifest that corruption fights back. With enormous stolen resources elements have attempted to compromise law enforcing institutions and pervert the course of justice,’’ he said.

Therefore, he emphasised the necessity of building a system that would focus on preventing corruption that Nigeria would continue to implement policies aimed at building resilient systems that could withstand assault by corrupt officials.

“Our steps in this direction include the full implementation of both the Treasury Single Account (TSA) and the Bank Verification Number (BVN) the Open Government Partnership, various Executive Orders, strengthening the Anti-Corruption Agencies and permitting their full autonomy.

“It is in this context of building robust preventive systems that we must understand this initiative which aims to train leaders of anti-corruption agencies in the African Union by deploying Corruption Risk Assessment Methodology for corruption prevention in our countries.

“Corruption Risk Assessment seeks to identify corruption-prone processes and procedures in organisations and recommend appropriate remedial steps. The methodology places a premium on prevention as an effective complement to enforcement in the war against corruption.’’

In 2016, through support from the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP, the said that the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria acquired the capacity to conduct training on Corruption Risk Assessment and had since been conducting trainings.

“The training starting today is an opportunity to extend the benefits of this methodology to other African countries and by which it is clear that we have not taken our appointment as Anti-Corruption Champion for the continent for the year 2018 lightly.

“It is heart-warming that most of our countries have subscribed to not only the United Nations Convention against Corruption, UNCAC, but also the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (AUCPCC).

“This event offers a good opportunity to encourage the few countries which are yet to ratify the African Union Convention to expedite processes to do so. No efforts can be too much as we seek to rid our societies of the evil of corruption.’’
