AMBODE’S GOVT WAS A FAILURE, SAYS FORMER AIDE

0

A former Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tunji Bello, has said the government of his former boss, Akinwunmi Ambode, failed because of lack of emotional intelligence.

Bello also served in different capacities under the government of former governors Bola Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola.

In a farewell message to his colleagues who served in the Ambode’s administration, Bello said the administration was characterised by lack of democracy and arrogance.

“We should be happy for the opportunity provided and experience gained. It is not what you can buy on the shelf even if you have all the money.

“Yet, as we depart on our individual sojourn, we must never forget to learn from our glaring weaknesses and failures. Since we are all part of the success stories we must also share in the weaknesses and failures.

“Our main drawback is our government’s inability to apply enough emotional intelligence in the administration of the state. Emotional intelligence includes interpersonal skills, interpersonal relationship, humility, respect for the well established mores of governance, disregard for the accomplishments of others.

“The belief that our way is the best without considering other options in a democratic setting, absence of wider consultations, distance from the governed, lack of effective communication skill or amateurish display of government acts and political immaturity, deliberate and open alienation of others.

“We undertook gigantic projects without the soul. We were too self-opinionated and narrow in our approach to governance. It is a big drawback which prevented the administration from returning because it was punished for its lack of inclusiveness in a democratic setting.

“Besides and apart from lack of enough camaraderie compare to previous administrations, our cabinet has been less rigorous, less fulfilled, less engaged and less accomplished. And for the first time since the time of Governor Lateef Jakande, this cabinet departs unappreciated and disenchanted,” he said.

However, a close aide of the governor, who did not want to be identified, said Bello’s statement showed the calibre of people Ambode worked with as a governor.

While urging Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to watch his back, the aide said Lagosians should applaud the former governor for the achievements he recorded despite the oppositions he encountered.

He said, “It is a demonstration of the calibre of aides Ambode worked with. If you have been part of a government for four years and you think such a thing is happening and you are not man enough to walk out of that government, it clearly shows that you lack self dignity and respect.”

Molestation and Unlawful Detention of Nigerians by Malaysia Police Unacceptable – NIDOMY

The Nigeria in Diaspora Organization Malaysia chapter has condemned in totality the alleged, killing, raiding, molestation, extorting, and harassment of Nigerians Schooling and living in Malaysia by the Police.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday and signed by its President, Comrade Kingsley Nwankwo, the group challenged the Malaysia Police to publish any evidence it may have to confirm the allegation, adding: ”the way Malaysian Police are killing, extorting, assaulting, intimidating and harassing Nigerians every blessed day is surprising, shocking, and unbelievable; it makes mockery of us as the giant of Africa”

See below for full text of the statement.

PRESS STATEMENT:
NIGERIANS IN DIASPORA ORGANIZATION MALAYSIA (NIDO-MY) CRIES OUT OVER THE DELIBERATE NEGLIGENCE OF NIGERIA HIGH COMMISSION MALAYSIA AND EXTORTION CARRIED OUT BY MEN OF UNIFORMS (MALAYSIA POLICE) AND THE HEIGHT OF IMPUNITY.

The leadership of NIDOMY have observed and watch carefully following the recent news of the raid and molestation of Nigerians in Malaysia, by the Police Department and critically analyzing the dangers it portents to the safety and well beings of Nigerians in Malayia, we hereby emphatically kick against the action in its entirety and call on the Nigerian Government and President Muhamadu Buhari to call the High Commissioner and the Staff of the Nigeria High Commission to order for conniving with the Police to molest Nigerians in Malaysia.

It is quite unfortunate and worrisome that Mr. Mafe Adewunmi Olanrewaju, Consular and a staff with the Nigeria High Commission Malaysia who is supposed to protect and defend Nigerians had recently connived with the Malaysians to unlawfully detained a Nigerian although his legal immigration status is yet to be ascertained by name Alowonle Oluwajuwon Gilbert that was alleged of killing a Malaysian Nurse named Siti Kharina between 12.41am on May 9 and 2.30pm on May 15 at a unit at Third Avenue Condominium, Cyberjaya.

This action is unacceptable, unfortunate and call to question and call the members of Nigeria Diplomatic corps in this vast country, to order in effectively implement the manifesto of the APC led administration and bilateral agreement between the two Nations in this challenging period of our nation history.

What baffles us the most is the lack of civility and unprofessional manner the Malaysian police always raid the Condominium of Nigerians in Malaysia as if there is no any bilateral good working relationship between Nigeria and Malaysia as a Country. If for whatever reason there is a need to conduct such search on the houses or apartments of Nigerians for any intelligence information, the most respecting, honourable and professional way and manner to go was always to intimate the occupants of their intention rather than always engaging in gestapo way.

As a matter of fact, the way Malaysian Police are killing, extorting, assaulting, intimidating and harassing Nigerians every blessed day is surprising, shocking, and unbelievable; it makes mockery of us as the giant of Africa.
This very act by the Malaysia Government and Police is one to many, it is gradually demonstrating its penchant for impunity, racism, disregard for the International rule of law and professionalism.

I tabled the complaint of some Nigerians that were arrested during a mass arrest due to the murder case on ground and also briefed them on the Nigeria on trial for murder to the Nigeria High Commission Malaysia and high Commission promised to follow up with the case and also promised to get a lawyer that will defend Alowonle Oluwajuwon Gilbert at the Sepang Court Selangor, Malaysia, but to our greatest surprise the Nigeria High Commission didn’t show up, no attorney to stand for Gilbert which resulted that his fate lies at the mercy of the judge. As we speak the young man is on a crossroad of death sentence or life imprisonment, we have so many of similar and pending issues in Malaysia. Based on that the Commission has declared war against the new executive of NIDOMY under my leadership.

As we are in the Next Level in Nigeria, we hereby call on President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, well-meaning Nigerians, groups and individuals to rise up to the occasion to save our soul and reject such act in order to save Nigerians living and Schooling in Malaysia.

Signed
Comrade Kingsley Nwankwo,
President, NIDO-Malaysia

Army accuse NGOs of providing support to terrorists in the Northeast

0

The Nigerian Army has again accused some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) operating in the North-east of breaching security and sabotaging ongoing counter-terrorism operations in the zone.

Army Spokesperson Sagir Musa on Thursday said the military established this after the arrest of a Boko Haram commander, Mohammed Modu on Sunday.

The army had in 2018 levelled a similar accusation against NGOs operating in the region.

Mr Musa alleged that the high profile commander belongs to the Abubakar Shekau’s faction of the terrorist group.

The army spokesperson said preliminary investigations revealed that the Shekau faction of Boko Haram had been receiving “humanitarian support of food and drugs supplies from some NGOs operating in the North East.’’

Mr Musa described the NGOs’ actions – providing logistics support to terrorists, as “serious security breaches.’’

He, therefore, warned the affected NGOs to “desist from compromising Nigeria’s national security and war efforts against terrorism.’’

Mr Musa advised them to operate in accordance with the extant rules and regulations guiding the operations of humanitarian aid workers.

He said they must also operate in line with the guidelines and procedures of International Humanitarian Laws, as well as the Laws of Armed Conflict.

He further warned, “The Nigerian army will no longer tolerate such acts of sabotage inimical to the fight against terrorism by any organisation or agency, and will not hesitate to sanction any such recalcitrant organisation as appropriate.’’

He did not name any particular NGO.

NAN reports that in December 2018, the army suspended the operations of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) in the North-East theatre until further notice.

The army alleged that UNICEF had shifted from “its duty of catering to the wellbeing of children and the vulnerable through humanitarian activities and now engages in training selected persons for clandestine activities.”

“The Theatre Command will not tolerate this kind of sabotage from any individual, group of persons or organisation.

“We call on all Non-Governmental Organisations and members of humanitarian agencies to keep to their legitimate norms in the discharge of their acclaimed humanitarian duties.”

The army provided no evidence against UNICEF.

The army later announced a reversal of the decision to suspend UNICEF from the North-east.

GAME OF THRONES STAR: Kit Harington Checked Into a Rehab Facility

After HBO released its documentaryGame of Thrones: The Last Watch, screenshots quickly started circulating of Kit Harington falling apart while reading about Jon Snow’s role in the fate of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). The end of Thrones hit Harington pretty hard, and according to “Page Six,” the actor has spent the last month in a rehab facility, seeking help with “stress and exhaustion and also alcohol,” according to a source, with a friend of the actor quoted saying, “He realized ‘this is it — this is the end’, it was something they had all worked so hard on for so many years. He had a moment of, what next?”

Harington has spoken openly about the emotional ups and downs of starring on Thrones. His mental health really took a turn for the worse after Snow was killed, and fans spent a year intensely speculating about whether or not he would return. “That was a time when I started therapy, and started talking to people,” Harington told Variety. “I had felt very unsafe, and I wasn’t talking to anyone. I had to feel very grateful for what I have, but I felt incredibly concerned about whether I could even fucking act.” He also described that time in his life as his “darkest period.” Additionally, the actor recently told Esquire that he “fucking broke down” after filming his final scene for Thrones, and compared the final shedding of his Jon Snow garments to being skinned alive.

During his rehab stint, “Page Six” reports that Harington is “undergoing psychological coaching, practicing mindful meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy to combat stress and deal with negative emotions at the facility.” He has permission to go in and out of the facility, so locals have spotted him around town, and his wife, Rose Leslie, who famously played his love interest Ygritte on the show, is said to be very supportive of his decision to seek treatment.

URHOBO GROUP ENDORSES UZOR KALU FOR DEPUTY SENATE PRESIDENT

0

The Urhobo Political Group, a pressure group within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has endorsed the ambition of former governor of Abia State and Senator-elect, Orji Uzor Kalu, to become the next Deputy Senator President in the ninth National Assembly billed for inauguration next month.

The endorsement was done through a unanimous voice vote by members of the group during a meeting held at Ughelli, Delta State.

Coordinator of the group Jerry Uloho said Kalu was endorsed because of his integrity, adding that he led an enviable track record of performance during his tenure as governor of Abia State.

Uloho said Kalu’s record is unblemished, and that electing him as the Deputy Senate President would be positive for the image of Nigeria.

As an industrialist who has made much input in the Nigerian economy, the group said Kalu as DSP would be a plus to the second term of President Muhammadu Buhari in his attempt to salvage the Nigerian economy and win the fight against corruption.

“Orji Kalu is cool headed and a personality whose character is not in doubt. We are not comfortable with having a rascal and controversial figure that would rubbish the image of the Senate and the nation at large in the eyes of the global community,” Uloho said.

“If Orji Kalu becomes the DSP, promotion will not be a punishment to fellow Nigerians; and with Orji Kalu, not only the South-South and South-East, but the entire nation, would be comfortable,” Uloho said.

He urged all senators-elect to give Kalu the needed support to emerge as the Deputy Senate President of the ninth Senate.

APPEAL COURT DECLARES ADELEKE QUALIFIED TO CONTEST ELECTION; AWARDS N3 MILLION AGAINST PLAINTIFFS

The Abuja division of the Court of Appeal has set aside the judgment of a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which had declared that under Section 177(d) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution, Senator Ademola Adeleke was ineligible to contest the September 2018 governorship election in Osun State.

The trial court had premised its decision on the grounds that Adeleke forged the secondary school credentials he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the country’s election monitor, in 2018.

But the appellate court, in an unanimous judgment of its three-man panel, upheld the appeal by Adeleke and his political platform, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Justice Emmnuel Agim, who read the lead judgment of the Court of Appeal, awarded the sum of N3 million against the plaintiffs who instituted the suit before the Bwari division of the FCT High Court – Wahab Raheem and Adam Habeeb – who were respondents to the appeals filed by Adeleke and the PDP.

In their separate appeals, Adeleke and PDP had challenged the April 2 judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, delivered by Justice Othman Musa, who further declared Adeleke a dropout of the Ede Muslim Grammar School in Ede, Osun State.

Justice Emmanuel Agim, who delivered the lead judgment of the Court of Appeal, held that the suit, having not been filed within 14 days after Adeleke’s Form CF001 was submitted to INEC, or 14 days after his name was published as a candidate in the September 2018 election, by virtue of Section 285 of the Constitution, had become statute-barred

Justice Agim also held that the failure of the FCT High Court to deliver its verdict within 60 days of the filing of the suit had rendered the lower court’s judgment a nullity

The Court of Appeal also held the affidavit evidence of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and result ledger attached to it showing that Adeleke was not a dropout but actually sat for the May 1981 examination of the body at Muslim Grammar School, Ede.

Accordingly, the court allowed the appeal and awarded cost against the respondents.

COURT GRANTS NAIRA MARLEY BAIL

The Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi has granted Nigerian musician Azeez Fashola bail.

At the resumed bail application, the lead defense counsel, Olalekan Ojo apologized for his absence at the initial arraignment on May 20 due to heavy down poor.

Ojo urged the court to accept the bail application Prima Facie based on the presumption of his innocence in accordance with Section 162 (1).

The defense also pleaded that a liberal approach is taken in hearing the bail application.

The prosecution counsel, led by Rotimi Oyedepo, however, argued that it is not the temporary release of the singer that mattered but the final judgment.

He, therefore, urged the court to grant accelerated hearing rather than bail.

He added that since the lawyer of the defendant said the defendant is a celebrity, then his actions and inactions have a multiplier effect on youths in the entire federation.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo who presided over the bail hearing after listening to the defense and prosecution arguments granted the singer bail to the sum of two million Naira with two sureties.
