Yahaya Bello, Akeredolu, Kalu To Be Honoured at NEXT LEVEL Concert

0

It is June 2019, a new month after the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari into office. It is also three months after the February 2019 presidential elections that brought in the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for another term of four.

Whilst it is true that the elections was hotly contested between the various candidates, it is especially true that the contest was majorly squared-out between the president and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.

The elections can conveniently be described as one that among other things galvanized Nigerians into appreciable political actions.

Many Nigerians lived up to their electoral responsibilities by coming out en-masse to exercise their franchise.

Some political commentators have attributed it to a growing democratization of the Nigerian state

It was therefore not surprising when many Nigerians, prior to the polls proper, indicated willingness to stand against the old order aptly represented by one of the presidential candidates.

Seeing that the 2019 presidential elections have come and gone, with the winner declared and sworn in, one wonders if it is not time for the various gladiators to sheath swords and contribute their quotas to nation building.

After all, the overall idea one would think is that the various presidential candidates regardless of party affiliation joined the race for the good of the country and its people.

To this end, it goes with emphasis that the time for the country to march forward is now.

This underscores the importance of the NEXT LEVEL Victory Concert slated for June 10 2019, at 5pm.

Indeed there’s wisdom in the timely organization of this all important event seeing that it opens the window for all lovers of Nigeria and Nigerians to forget the past and embrace the governments resolve to position the country in an enviable place in the comity of nations of the world.

Even so, the commonsense of the conference organizers to honour astute personalities like His Excellency, Executive Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu and others with Recognition Awards, only goes to buttress the national importance and spread of cognizance adopted for the project.

These are men whose efforts contributed immensely in ensuring the triumph of the will of the people at the February presidential polls.

Billed to hold at the Sheraton Hotels and Towers in Abuja, the NEXT LEVEL Victory Concert is jointly sponsored by Project One Nigeria and the Buhari Support Organization (BSO).

Consequently, it is instructive to remind all that “there’s time for everything.” “And now is the time to act”

Group decries propaganda offensive against Nigerian military and the war against ISWAP

0

The Coalition Against Terrorism in Nigeria (CATE) has dismissed as baseless and unfounding, media reports of an alleged Sunday’s captured or occupation of Marte, headquarters of Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, by the marauding terrorists operating around the Lake Chad basin under the auspices of ISWAP.

The group in a statement Monday in Maiduguri through its National Coordinator Gabriel Onoja said, the report turned out to be propaganda launched against the Nigerian military for the benefit of terrorists.

He said one thread that runs through all the news reports is that they are all traceable to a newspaper with focus on covering the northern part of the country, which not too long ago was caught out publishing details of a planned military operation to alert Boko Haram terrorists and their ISWAP to manoeuvre against the operation.

“We note that the report of the said newspaper exposed a failure to reference on the ground facts but rather resorted to quoting “dependable sources” and “sources” to infer a development as serious as the alleged capture of a town.”

Mr Onoja also noted that a few versions of reports on other platforms have embellished what they got from this initial source.

“Knowing that series of attempted incursions by Boko Haram terrorists has recently been ending in their being killed in dozens, the story convoluted facts to create the impression that the insurgents suddenly become invincible overnight, whereas they were dealt decisive blows in their attempted attack similar to the trouncing they have suffered in recent weeks.”

“CATE has contacts on the ground in the affected area. They have confirmed that what transpired in Marte was blown out of proportion, which raises the question whether Nigeria is in the grip of mischief by a section of the media that has resolved to be unpatriotic.” – he added.

He said, nothing in the reported capture of Marte checked out.

“Based on facts obtained from on the ground assessment, the story of the purported capture of Marte was found to be aimed at derailing the war against terrorism with intent to demoralize government troops that are carrying out the operation with selfless sacrifices that have earned the country respite from the scourge of Boko Haram.

“The publication of the misleading story is a red flag that a new propaganda offensive has been launched against the Nigerian Armed Froces with a view to boosting the morale of Boko Haram terrorists.

He called on the professional media organizations to continue adhering to the time-tested tenets of journalism that is built around objectivity, fairness balance and due consideration for national interest and the general public good.

“We urge the Nigerian military to keep up its punishing onslaught against the terrorists that had thought they could make life unbearable for Nigerians.

“The recourse to lies by supporters of the terrorists is not enough to invalidate the divine mandate that the Niegrian Armed Forces have to liberate the country from its enemies.

“Finally, the Nigerian military has confirmed it’s new posture as the last hope of the common masses and we urge this patriotic and selfless members of the armed forces never to be derailed by the antics of terrorists and their sponsors.”

Amnesty International’s Strange Mission in Nigeria

0

By Karen Goulding

_“All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when we are able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must appear inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.”_
― Sun Tzu, The Art of War

What is the best approach to lulling one’s quarry into letting down their guard? It is to appear conciliatory, pit up a pacifist front, appear to be interested in a common good, empathize, show kindness, offer useful suggestion and of course strike when it is least expected. Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, quoted above, summed the strategy up as “mystify, mislead, and surprise the enemy”.
It appears that this is the strategy that international human rights non-governmental organization, Amnesty International, has adopted in dealing with Nigeria. The NGO that has been in the business of hounding the federal government and its institutions recently launched “Nigeria: Human Rights Agenda”, comprising an Eight-Point Agenda it wants to saddle the government of President Muhammadu Buhari with.
It is fair to point out that the eight points contained in the document are innocuous on their own if they were presented by an organization that has been less partial and milder in its belligerence towards the Nigerian state, especially at a trying time of fighting terrorism and insurgency. No one should have anything against an agenda that wants the government to end all forms of violence against women and girls; Protect the rights of children; Ensure accountability for the Niger Delta clean-up; Guarantee freedom of expression; End torture, enforced disappearances and extrajudicial executions; Secure Economic, Social and Cultural Rights; Protect the civic space and improve the operating environment for human rights defenders and activists; and Abolish the death penalty and commute all death sentences.

But given its sometimes criminal interpretation of laws, even international protocols and conventions, it is necessary to ask for the fine prints of Amnesty International’s agenda. It might not have been taken to task over such matters in other countries, but its record in Nigeria requires that the NGO is asked to specify what its intended end point is. What does it seek to achieve with the demands it is making? The query becomes necessary since it admitted in the document that there are existing legal frameworks that have already captured this demand. Could it, for instance, be attempting to interpret these laws and international instruments to suit its own end? Like demanding for the implementation of these demands in a way that cripples the government’s ability to respond to threats, which Amnesty International has been repeatedly accused of without satisfactorily disabusing the minds of the public that those are not its intentions.

Those points on the agenda sound good on paper. But translated into real terms they could produce nightmarish scenarios. For example, “Guarantee freedom of expression” is innuendo for allowing people to make whatever utterances they feel like making irrespective of whether those same expressions would be termed hate speech in other jurisdiction. Even if certain expressions, in other countries, would have attracted judicial censure for being homophobic, inciting, encouraging violence against a particular group amongst other possibilities, Amnesty International wants Nigeria to guarantee that people are free to say whatever they like and retire same under freedom of expression. Common! People are jailed for their tweets in the United Kingdom if the courts find them offensive and harmful.

Add this previous demand to the request to “Protect the civic space and improve the operating environment for human rights defenders and activists”, which is the same as giving a blank cheque to those that are interested in shutting down cities, denying other citizens of their freedom of movement and believe in committing arson in the name of protests. The deception entailed in this demand extends to not taking actions against terrorist sympathizers and collaborators once they brand themselves as civil society or activists. This demand is being made in the same country where activists, aid workers and erstwhile journalists have been found to be passing information to Boko Haram terrorists or helping them amplify their propaganda. What else will Amnesty International ask for?

Human life is precious, should not be taken under any circumstances, arbitrarily or via state sponsored processes. But the request to “Abolish the death penalty and commute all death sentences” exposes Amnesty International as a scam that is operating under a respectable label. It should first actualize this demand in the United States, notorious for executing convicts with cocktails of lethal injections, before marketing same to Nigeria. The NGO must then secure similar understanding from Boko Haram, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB), Niger Delta militants, bandits and kidnappers, who are apparently oblivious of the fact that other humans have a right to life. This request and the bit about “extrajudicial executions” is the NGO’s way of asking that law enforcement and military personnel do nothing and allow themselves to be slaughtered during encounters with the aforementioned groups. What country does that?

The poison-laced Eight-Point agenda notwithstanding, the good points in the document should not be ignored, especially when they are issues that other sensible groups other than Amnesty International have been championing. Awareness about gender issues and the rights of children is on the increase and the lesson learnt is that eventually citizen participation and not just the hype by NGOs is what will bring about the required changes. Military and law enforcement agencies have set up human rights desks where citizens can lay complaints, most of which are being addressed. With the benefit of social media, Nigerians are also beginning to hold institutions that wield power to account and higher standard, which makes Amnesty International’s colonial and imperialist intervention of little use.
Even at that questions must be asked. What is Amnesty International’s mission in Nigeria, because the mission appears strange, whatever it is? It did not make such input at the start of President Buhari’s first term in office yet it acted as an opposition party for the entire duration of that tenure. Now that it has presented an Eight-Point Agenda at the start of his second tenure, decision makers in the Federal Government and the agencies in Amnesty International’s crosshair should smell deception. Deception that will be followed by a brief period of the NGO’s inactivity ahead of its attack as propounded in Sun Tzu’s The Art of War.
The government must also ask what its response should be since the group has made the first move. There are no hard and fast rules when dealing with a guerrilla organization of this nature. But a first step is not to reject or accept the presented agenda. The government should then continue to reform the system along the path that conforms with internationally acceptable benchmarks without compromising its ability to respond to the myriad of security breaches confronting the nation. Above all, the federal government must enlighten Nigerians to the insidious mission of the NGO in the country and how its activities put the lives of citizens at risk. This preparation for the attack that must certainly come from Amnesty International for “The art of war teaches us to rely not on the likelihood of the enemy’s not coming, but on our own readiness to receive him; not on the chance of his not attacking, but rather on the fact that we have made our position unassailable.”

Oshiomhole’s Agbero style of leading APC has destroyed APC – Oyegun

0

The former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie Oyegun has insinuated that the reasons for the current desaray in the APC is as result of the lack of capacity by the National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to lead a political party.

In a statement issued by Oyegun’s Public Affairs Adviser, Chief Ray Morphy, Oshiomhole was said to be degrading and demarketing the party, rather than unify and bring more people on board, he is chasing people out of the party with his agbero style of engagement. The former governor also berated Oshiomhole for running APC down with unguarded utterances and taking unilateral decisions without any form of consultation with the national working committee (NWC) members and other party stakeholders.

The full statement reads, “that statement of Booby Traps is ludicrous and infantile , an attempt to drum up justification for the failings of the party under Oshiomhole Chairmanship. Oshiomhole failed because he lacks the temperament that is required to run a political part. He lacks the capacity to manage the different interests and tendencies that constitute a political party. He engages his mouth before engaging his mind, so he offends party members. So, how does that constitute booby traps by Oyegun, the erstwhile chairman, already, the Deputy National Chairman, North has confirmed that Oshiomhole runs the party with recourse to the NWC. He acts in direct opposite of decisions taken by NWC. No minutes of NWC meetings which in any event take place outside the party Secretariat. How would you not have crisis in states with the confusion that Oshiomhole created when he gave the states freedom to choose their methods of choosing candidates for elections. Much of the crisis in states arose out of sheer incapacity on the part of the current chairman. How has this Oshiomhole incapacity become booby traps by Oyegun? Many party men were aghast at the unfairness and injustice meted them during the primaries process. Only a bad carpenter quarrels with his tools. Indeed Oshiomhole is degrading and demarketing the party, rather than seek to bring more people on board, he is rather chasing people out of the party with his agbero style of engagement.”

BANDITS ATTACK ZAMFARA GOV’S CONVOY

Suspected bandits on Sunday opened fire on the motorcade of the Zamfara governor, Bello Matawalle, who was on his way to condole with victims of a previous attack on a community in Gusau Local Government, according to witnesses.

The witnesses said the governor’s convoy came under attack on Sunday evening while he was enroute Lilo community to sympathise with victims of the attack on Saturday.

The state government had earlier, on Monday, issued a statement which said the governor and his team were the ones who went after the attackers and not the other way round.

Earlier on Saturday, eight people were killed and 18 others injured after bandits attacked Lilo community, on the outskirts of Gusau, the state capital. The governor embarked on the Sunday visit to the community to assess the situation.

Zamfara, like many other states across the north, has witnessed sporadic attacks by bandits and kidnappers that have claimed the lives of many.

Sunday’s attack

During the attack on the governor’s convoy on Sunday, the bandits, taking advantage of the bushy terrain, opened fire on the motorcade, a source said.

The source, who said he was unsure of the number of casualties, said the governor’s security details quickly returned fire and were able to protect and evacuate their principal.

“Even if we stopped, we can’t cross the river because the bandits are in (a) better position to notice the movement of anyone confronting them while they are covered by the thick forest,” the source added, while explaining the security’s withdrawal from confronting the bandits.

Other sources who witnessed the incident gave similar narratives. The sources include public and non-public officials but asked not to be named for fear of being in the new governor’s bad books.

Government’s Narrative

Meanwhile, Yusuf Idris, the acting press secretary to the governor, in a statement on Monday, gave a different account.

He said the governor led security operatives for an ‘operation’ to rout bandits from their hideouts.

He said the governor was accompanied by his deputy, Mahadi Aliyu-Gusau, the state’s security heads and other dignitaries.

He said the team was able “to chase bandits at their camps during the unannounced visit to the area.”

According to Mr Idris, the bandits abandoned their hideouts and fled after the onslaught by the team.

“Despite this, the governor did not feel discouraged and moved ahead to Lilo village for the condolence visit,” the statement added.

“As chief security officer of the state, l have to show a good example, I have no option than to lead security agencies for this operation. As a leader, I have to show commitments to my people toward addressing this problem,” the statement quoted the governor as saying.

Strangely, the statement added that the governor was accompanied by some dignitaries.

These included, the emir of Gusau, Ibrahim Bello; Secretary to the State Government, Bello Bala; State Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ibrahim Mallaha and others.

“How can such dignitaries like an emir join the governor to go attack bandits,” one of our sources said.

“It was the governor’s entourage that was surprisingly attacked by the bandits,” the source added.

A few weeks earlier, the governor of Kaduna, Nasir El-Rufai, whose state has also been rocked by criminal activities, narrated how he led a team to take on kidnappers along the dreaded highway leading to the state.

Since then, however, there have been other attacks by the armed criminals on the highway.

DOGARA DENIES INTEREST IN SPEAKERSHIP

0

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has denied joining the race for the speakership position in the incoming ninth National Assembly.

This was contained in a statement by his spokesperson, Turaki Hassan, on Sunday.

The speaker described those who he said had been campaigning for him on social media as mischief makers.

“We wish to distance the Speaker from the fake news being pushed and circulated by mischief makers and enemies of progress who want to create confusion in order to benefit and feast on it.

“The Speaker has always spoken for himself and would not be engaged in childish hide and seek games.

“When he contested in 2015, he openly sought for support and openly canvassed for votes and there is nothing stopping him from doing so now if that was the case.

“We have official channels of communication and we have not issued any statement to that effect. We urge members of the public to totally disregard the fake news being published about the Speaker,” the statement read.

A new speaker is expected to emerge in the house in less than two weeks.

The APC leadership recently declared support for the current house leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, to become the next Speaker. The party is also supporting Ahmed Lawan as the next Senate President.

The adoption of Messrs Gbajabiamila and Lawan was condemned by some APC lawmakers including Borno senator, Ali Ndume, who also seeks to occupy the slot.

Mr Ndume has vowed to continue with his ambition, saying he enjoys the support of many elected APC senators.
