MAN RAPES OWN MOTHER IN IMO

0

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Imo State Command, has arrested one Paul Ihuaku for allegedly raping his mother.

Briefing journalists on Thursday, the state Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Raji Ibrahim, said the suspect was arrested by the operatives of the corps following a tip-off.

It was gathered that after the incident, the mother reported the suspect to the youth in the area, who apprehended him and alerted men of the corps.

“The men of the command later proceeded to the residence of the suspect and arrested him,” he added.

Fielding questions from journalists, the suspect confessed to the crime, adding that he was under the influence of alcohol.

“After drinking on that fateful evening, there was a heavy downpour and I could not resist the urge for sex; so, I had to use a local pistol to threaten my mother to submission and I later raped her,” Ihuaku stated.

Asked if he was married, the suspect said he did not have the means yet, as he was not doing anything tangible.

“I was not bewitched. I was under the influence of alcohol,” he added.

It was also gathered that the incident took place in the village house the suspect is living in with his mother.

The mother (name withheld) confessed that the incident was the second time.

She said, “I was in the kitchen and saw him (Ihuaku) with a pistol. He used it to threaten me. He told me that he would kill me. I could not do anything other than to beg him to drop the gun.

“It was in the process that he threw me on the ground and it (rape) happened.

“I had to call on the youth the next morning, as the incident happened when it was already dark and damp. The youth later went to the NSCDC headquarters in Itu to report him, hence his arrest.”

Address me as ‘First Lady’ henceforth, not ‘Wife of the President’ – Aisha Buhari

0

The wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, on Thursday, announced her decision to be addressed as the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

She said this would take effect immediately in order to resolve the issue of the title of wives of governors.

Buhari disclosed her new official title at the presentation of awards to the former and current wives of Governors of the 36 states.

The event held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“When my husband was newly elected, I personally chose to be called the wife of the President.

“But, I realised that it causes confusion from the state as to whether the wives of state governors are to be addressed as the first ladies or wives of the governors.

“So, forgive me for confusing you from the beginning, but now I chose to be called the first lady,” she said.

Buhari, Tinubu will soon taste el-Rufai’s venom, says Shehu Sani

0

Former lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has described the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, as a hypocrite, adding that President Muhammadu Buhari will soon taste the poisonous venom of el-Rufai.

Sani said this in a Facebook post while responding to el-Rufai’s comments online.

El-Rufai had posted photos of Sani and former lawmaker, Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, mocking them and boasting that he was responsible for their defeat in the last elections and their “permanent” retirement from politics.

In his response, however, Sani described the governor “as a neophyte who relies on the popularity of President Buhari to win elections.”

The former lawmaker said el-Rufai’s inability to emerge as the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum showed that the Kaduna governor could not win anything without Buhari’s help.

He said el-Rufai was an “opportunist who uses people in power only to betray them later.”

Sani added, “You can’t claim to have ‘retired’ anyone from politics when all your life is about hanging on President Buhari and dropping his name to achieve your goals. You have yet to prove your ‘power of retirement’ by standing on your feet though the recent one you did was trying to be the chairman of governors’ forum and you woefully failed.

“Your treacherous history of jumping from one godfather to another is well-known to all Nigerians. And I have always believed that it’s a matter of time before PMB will have a taste of your patented venom and perfidy once you reach a point that he is of no further importance to you.”

Sani said before he dumped the All Progressives Congress in late 2018, he told Buhari; the National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole; and National Leader, Bola Tinubu, that el-Rufai would attack them too “when the time is right.”

The activist said he could not understand why el-Rufai and members of his family continually attacked him.

He added, “Before I left the APC, I told PMB and Oshiomhole and Tinubu that you will insult, betray and fight them. It is in your DNA.

“The liquor of power makes you think and act like a god, enjoy it while it lasts. It seems your mind is still troubled. If not, Shehu Sani could not have been in your diminutive heart long after you have ‘retired him.’”

The former lawmaker, who represented Kaduna-Central Senatorial District from 2015 to 2019, said el-Rufai knelt before Oshiomhole during the APC primaries of 2018 in order to snatch his ticket.

2019 Polls: Allegations of partisanship are false, Group exonerates Nigerian Army of wrongdoing

0

The Coalition of Civil Society on Human Rights and Conflict Resolution in Nigeria has hailed the Nigerian Army’s uncompromising efforts during the last general elections.

The group made this known in a report signed by National Coordinator Maxwell Gowon after examining the military’s involvement in the entire electoral process.

Read full report below.

COALITION OF CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS ON HUMAN RIGHTS AND CONFLICT RESOLUTIONS IN NIGERIA

A report of an investigative committee set up by a Coalition of Civil Society on Human Rights and Conflict Resolution in Nigeria to identify the role of the government and other critical stakeholders in the conduct of the 2019 general elections in Nigeria.

Introduction:

The Coalition of Civil Society on Human Rights and Conflict Resolution in Nigeria in a bid to put to rest the various allegations of complicity by the government and the relevant security agencies during the 2019 general elections undertook extensive research in six states namely, Kano, Kaduna, Rivers, Nasarawa. Katsina and Zamfara.

Our team of researchers interacted with community leaders, political leaders at ward levels, clergy’s, as well as a segment of the voting population to gather responses on the level of involvement of the security agencies in the conduct of the gubernatorial and presidential elections in the state.

The choice of these states was necessitated by the fact that these states experienced some level of electoral violence that resulted in the deaths of persons. In some quarters, the security agencies were also accused of joining forces with the All Progressive Congress (APC) in rigging the elections.

Consequently, the Coalition of Civil Society on Human Rights and Conflict Resolution in Nigeria set up a special investigative committee to physically visit these states for first-hand information that culminated in this report. Furthermore, the findings from the report indicated that the claims of human rights violations were not factual, and also the claims that agents of government were used to intimidate voters were based on illogical conclusions. The findings from the research also indicated that the security agencies indeed rose to the occasion to ensure the peaceful conduct of the polls.

The 2019 General Elections in Nigeria:

The 2019 general elections in Nigeria came with its attendant security challenges. There was a pocket of violence in some states such as Kano, Rivers, Zamfara, Kaduna, Nasarawa, and Katsina states. This is despite the commencement of Operation Python Dance II by the Nigerian Army and the establishment of the Situation Room by the Nigerian Army to monitor elections online and real-time.

These interventions were noble and were able to curtail the excesses of political thugs and those with the intent of undermining the electoral system. Our team of researchers upon interaction with community leaders in whose domain skirmishes were recorded, they were filled with gratitude for the Nigerian Army, whose officers and men indeed saved the situation from deteriorating through their timely intervention.

Rivers State:

In Rivers state, our team of researcher upon close interaction with locals blamed the violence the erupted in some parts of the state on the activities of political thugs who were armed by political actors in a bid to ensure that the elections go in their favour. On particular interest was in Obi-Akpor Local Government Area. Our researcher visited the 17 wards and communities that constitute the local government area and revelations were abound on how a particular political heavyweight from that area distributed guns and other dangerous weapons to scores of jobless youths for use on election day.

The much was corroborated by the community leaders who were saddened by the way, and manner politicians have continued to use the youths for their evil agenda.

They were full of praises for the intervention of the Nigerian Army that helped in bringing the calming the situation and ensuring that things do not escalate. Some of those interviewed also questioned the role of the state government in instigating violence and attempting to pitch the people against the Nigerian Army in the discharge of their responsibilities.

Our team of researchers upon interaction with other relevant stakeholders were able to establish that the Nigerian Army acting in line with global best practices was able to reduce human casualties.

Kano and Kaduna States:

In states like Kano and Kaduna, our team of researchers gathered responses from Kano Municipal as well as Kaduna Metropolis. There was unionism in the responses gathered from these areas, and all pointed to the fact that but for the intervention of the Nigerian Army in the security apparatus during the elections, saved the country of unprecedented electoral violence.

Zamfara State:

In Zamfara state, our team of researchers was confronted with a unique challenge that entailed that the services of the Nigerian Army were secured in an attempt to access some of the areas that experienced violence during the elections. Locals that were interacted with submitted that the operations of the Nigerian Army were indeed strict and devoid of partisanship.

The claims that the Nigerian Army was complicit could not be established in Zamfara state. Instead, it was realized that the Nigerian Army opened hotlines for easy access by the locals in all the local government areas.

Katsina State:

In Katsina state, there was no concrete evidence that suggests that the Nigerian military was partisan or it failed in the discharge of its responsibility, which is essentially the maintenance of law and order. This much was confirmed by community leaders in whose domain they recorded some form of electoral violence.

Nasarawa State:

The case of Nasarawa was not different from Katsina as all, and sundry appreciated the efforts of the Nigerian Army. Our team of researchers was able to identify that the Nigerian Army exhibited a high sense of professionalism in the conduct of their business in the face of provocation.

Conclusion:

The Coalition of Civil Society on Human Rights and Conflict Resolution in Nigeria upon completion of the tour of six states and communities that witnessed electoral skirmishes it, therefore, concludes the following:

The allegations of partisanship against the Nigerian Army could not be substantiated and thus existed as a mere figment of imagination.

The Coalition of Civil Society on Human Rights and Conflict Resolution in Nigeria could not establish cases of human rights abuses against the Nigerian Army in the six states it visited.

The Coalition of Civil Society on Human Rights and Conflict Resolution in Nigeria has interacted with members of the host communities identified that the news making rounds on the complicity of the Nigerian Army in undermining the credibility of the electoral process were fabricated with no evidence to substantiate the claims.

The Coalition of Civil Society on Human Rights and Conflict Resolution in Nigeria.states that it was satisfied with the human rights compliance of the Nigerian Army, before, during, and after the 2019 general elections in Nigeria

The Coalition of Civil Society on Human Rights and Conflict Resolution in Nigeria. also states that from reports garnered from the fieldwork, the Nigerian Army indeed stood on the side of the people in protecting our nascent democracy.

The Coalition of Civil Society on Human Rights and Conflict Resolution in Nigeria.commends the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai for providing that valuable leadership in the course of the 2019 general elections in Nigeria.

Armed robber raped me using polythene bag as protection, teacher tells court

0

A teacher (name withheld) of a Catholic Secondary School in Lagos has narrated before an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court how a suspected armed robber raped her in her home using a polythene bag as protection.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the teacher made the revelation on Tuesday while giving evidence during the trial of two men in their 20’s- Babatunde Oluwaleke and Daniel Ojo – over the alleged rape and armed robbery.

While being led in evidence by Akin George, the lead prosecuting counsel for the state, the teacher gave a harrowing account of how she was raped in her home by Mr Oluwaleke on March 6, 2018.

She told the court that between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. while asleep in her bedroom, she was awoken by some noise and she saw two males, a tall one (Ojo) and a short one (Oluwaleke) both dark in complexion, ordering her to get up.

She said: “I told them I had no money and the first defendant (Oluwaleke) said I must produce money or he will kill me. I was pleading and the second defendant (Ojo) told him that they should go because that is not what they came for.

“I was tying a wrapper and the first defendant asked me to lie on the bed, I was pleading and he pushed me back on the bed, I begged that he should not rape me that I don’t have money but he took my Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card, mobile phones and all that I have.

“He brought out a knife, placed the tip on my stomach and threatened to stab me if I did not cooperate. When he opened my wrapper, he saw I was menstruating and I didn’t know from where he produced a polybag.

“He tied the polybag on his penis and inserted his penis into my vagina. I was pleading that I could be his sister but he ignored me, asking me to shut up. Much later, he removed the polybag and raped me using nothing.

“When the first defendant was done, the second defendant was telling him that was not what they came for and that they needed to go.”

She said after they left, terrified, she prayed, hoping that the other members of her household were unharmed.

The teacher said when she went to check on members of her family, she realised that they had all slept through her ordeal.

“My mother and her friend were still sleeping in the sitting room. Things were scattered and the contents of their handbags were emptied on the floor. I woke them up and told them what happened.

“We stay in a one-storey building, we went downstairs where my younger brother stays and we noticed the armed robbers used a rope to tie the door of the mosquito net which is attached to a spring so that it does not make noise.

“My younger brother was also still asleep with his friend, we woke them up and I told them what happened and we took an inventory of all the property that was stolen,” she said.

The teacher said members of her family immediately reported the crime to the authorities and she was taken to the hospital that morning for medical examination and counselling.

She said on that day, she was also taken to the Afonka Police Station, Alimosho, Lagos, where four recently apprehended armed robbery suspects were shown to her and she was asked if any of the suspects had raped and robbed her.

“Immediately I saw the first defendant, I recognised him, even with my eyes closed, I can identify him.
