BREAKING: BUHARI SENDS MINISTERIAL LIST TO SENATE

0

President Muhammadu Buhari has finally sent his list of ministerial nominees to the Senate.

The much-awaited list wasn’t void of drama as the president reportedly dropped 24 ministers from the last cabinet.

According to reports, only about 12 ministers will be re-appointed.

Unlike during his first term when he appointed only 36 ministers — one per state — he has decided to also appoint one per geo-political zone, bringing the total to 42, TheCable understands.

The list was sent to the Senate on Monday evening via executive communication and is expected to be read on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday.

The Senate, which will be proceeding on a two-month recess on Thursday, is expected to screen the nominees.

BUHARI TO POSCRIBE SHIITE MOVEMENT IN NIGERIA

0

President Muhammadu Buhari is considering the proscription of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), TVN has learnt from security and administration sources.

The proscription, which is likely to come in form of an executive order, is expected to be made public between tonight and tomorrow.

An emergency meeting of security chiefs held at the State House late Monday afternoon, and the conclusion was that the IMN will be declared an illegal organisation in Nigeria.

It is a direct response to the protests that turned violent Monday when members of Shiite IMN took over the streets of central Abuja, the Nigerian capital.

The demonstration was billed as just another instalment of relentless agitation for the release of Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, a foremost Nigerian Shiite cleric who was taken into custody four years ago.

It, however, ended with casualties, including the death of a deputy police commissioner. The IMN said 11 of its members were killed during the violence.

Presidential spokespersons, Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu, did not immediately return requests for comments about the president’s consideration of a Shiite proscription on Monday night.

Mr El-Zakzaky was arrested following an invasion of his residence in Zaria, northern Nigeria, between December 12-14, 2015.

The official death toll of the invasion, which was carried out by Nigerian soldiers in the dead of the night, was 347 for Shi’a adherents. The IMN said the official death toll was grossly downplayed and insisted more than 1,000 of its members were killed in that single attack.

The military said the protesters had attempted to block the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, from the free passage on a highway that runs through the Shi’a headquarters in Zaria in the evening of December 12, 2015, and soldiers had no choice but to open fire when the Shiites became unruly.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations Umar Belel has reportedly been gunned down by protesting members of the Iranian backed Islamic Movement of Nigeria IMN.

TeleVision Nigerian gathered that DCP Umar was killed by the group when he tried to stop them from destroying public properties around the Federal Secretariat in Abuja.

Consequently, the police has beefed up security in and around the federal capital to forestall further breakdown of law and order.

Brace-up to defend your fatherland, CDS urges troops as the Nigerian Army graduates 259 officer cadets

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin has urged newly-commissioned cadets to brace up to the service of their fatherland, saying that their preparedness to contribute to national security and defence of the territorial integrity of Nigeria was expected to be at a higher level.

General Olonisakin gave the charge at the Passing-Out-Parade of commissioned Cadets of Direct Short Service Course 24 /2019 at the Nigerian Army School of Infantry (NASI), Jaji, Kaduna State.

He advised them to demonstrate high level of discipline and shun every form of misconduct in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities at all times.

“As professional officers who will shortly be commissioned into the Nigerian Army, each and every one of you have various roles to play based on your expertise and previous experiences, in curtailing the country’s security challenges.

“As junior leaders, you will be confronted with various challenges. The Nigerian Army expects you to add value to the system by being innovative and providing objective leadership to the men that will be placed under your watch. “I wish to make it clear to the passing-out cadets that the Nigerian Armed Forces has zero tolerance for indiscipline and unprofessional conduct.

“You are expected to exhibit complete and absolute loyalty to the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, as provided in the Constitution and the Oath of Allegiance which will be administered to you shortly.

“You are also expected to be guided by existing regulations in your personal and professional conduct. “I need to advise you that any act of disloyalty, disobedience to constituted authority, insubordination and other unprofessional conduct will attract appropriate sanctions,” he said.

The CDS also admonished the newly-commissioned officers to understand and abide by the extant condition of service of the armed forces, assuring them that they would be exposed to further training. He said that the entry of the new officers into the armed forces was significant considering the various security challenges facing the country at the moment. According to him, you are entering into the army at a period when we are consolidating on the gains of years of confronting various security challenges in the country.

“The Nigerian Army, in conjunction with the other services and other security agencies, have been engaged in intensive combat against terrorist groups, especially in the North-East through Operation LAFIYA DOLE. “It also includes our involvement in multinational operations in the Lake Chad Basin under the auspices of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MN/JTF). “The Army is equally involved in anti-banditry operations in various parts of the country, especially the North-West, North-Central and the South Western region. “In the South-South, the activities of miscreants who are bent on crippling the economy by engaging in wanton destruction of oil and gas infrastructure constitute a major security challenge.

“To address these security challenges, the President, Commander-in-Chief, authorized the conduct of series of operations across the country. “In all these operations, especially in the North-East, we have made steady and deliberate progress. “However, we still contend with fleeing terrorists engaging in acts of suicide bombing with Improvised Explosive Devices (1503) and other heinous crimes,” he said.

A total of 259 Cadets where commissioned into the Nigerian Army.

The event also featured an Oath Taking Ceremony as well as commissioning of various projects within the cantonment initiated by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General TY Buratai.

Special Forces crush 11 Boko Haram fighters, nab 6 commanders in Jakana

0

Troops of the Special Forces deployed in Jakana have killed 11 Boko Haram insurgents, together with their informants.

The troops, who first disguised themselves, successfully laid an ambush along a road in Jakana axis of Borno State, before gunning down the terrorists.

A source within the intelligence recounts that the slain Boko Haram fighters were fleeing after they had attacked some military personnel on patrol duty.

“Unfortunately, the insurgents who were eliminated by the Nigerian troops had killed six soldiers before they met their Waterloo.

“The intelligence service has already identified some communities suspected to be harbouring terrorists and their agents but the military is wary of collateral damage on the communities because of women and children, that is why they are still yet to attack and raid the terrorists’ hideouts.”

Some of the communities allegedly aiding, supporting and offering help to the extremists our correspondent learnt include Matari, Mada, Burgozo, Duwari, and Didiri.

Consequently, the Nigerian troops have nabbed six high-profile Boko Haram commanders for frequently ambushing and coordinating attacks on troops within Auno, Jakana and Banishaik general area.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division of Nigerian Army, Maiduguri, Major General Abdulmalik Bulama Biu, also confirmed recent development saying that “the vigilant troops effectively ambushed and eliminated the insurgents who killed two officers and three soldiers, at Burgozo community in Borno State.

“After a gun battle that lasted 20 minute, the fleeing terrorists were overwhelmed by the superior firepower of the gallant troops of Operation Lafiya Dole,” he said.

The Army Major General, said while some of the terrorists were killed, the rest of them who were fleeing sustained serious wounds.

He noted that troops have commenced mopping-up, combing of the general area while some arrests had been made.

The GOC, also listed the items recovered from the insurgents to include one gun trucks, two anti-aircraft guns, one RPG, five Ak 47 riffle and night vision google.

Troops neutralise Boko Haram terrorists, recover cache of arms in Jakana

Gun truck, Arms, RPG tubes and Ammunition recovered

The Nigerian military has yet again recorded another feat on the war against insurgency as troops of 212 Battalion deployed at Forward Operating Base Jakana, dealt with and neutralised several members of the Boko Haram/ISWAP Terrorists while attempting to infiltrate their base in dire need for logistics.

The terrorists who came at about 6:45pm in 7 Gun Trucks and fought fiercely to infiltrate the camp, met their waterloo as the attack was thwarted with heavy fire and bombardment by the gallant and patriotic vigilant battle ready troops.

Following a sustained superior fire power from the Army the terrorists, after loosing significant number of both equipment and personnel in an exchange of fire scampered in disarray along the Benisheikh – Damaturu axis, – abandoning a damaged utility Gun truck which was earmarked to convey looted items.

Troops immediately followed in hot pursuit and the following items were captured:

a. 1 x Anti Aircraft Gun

b. 2 x Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) Tubes

c. 2 x AK 47 Rifles

d. 15 x Machine Gun rounds

e. 12 x AK 47 NATO rounds.

In another development, a Colonel and a Captain as well as 3 soldiers on transit from Maiduguri to Damaturu were killed as after running into an ambush staged by the fleeing terrorists from the Jakana axis.

The Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai while commiserating with the families of the fallen heroes reiterated that “Personnel of the Nigerian Army will never be deterred in the ongoing noble and patriotic fight against terrorism and insurgency in the North East”.

He further commended the efforts of the entire troops in the theatre and charged them to remain focus, highly committed and professional in the discharge of their constitutional roles.

The sacrifices of the fallen heroes in the ongoing fight against terrorism and insurgency is no doubt painful to all, but that will further spur us to do more to ensure that our country remain secured, peaceful and free from terrorists activities for the overall interest of the nation.

Group berates Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA over falsehood

0

A civil society group, the National Democratic Front NDF, has berated the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria and it’s leader Emmanuel Onwubiko over what it describes unguarded utterances aimed causing dissaffection thereby heating up the polity in the country.

National Secretary of the group, Dr Bolaji Abdulkadir at a press conference in Abuja urged Nigerians from all works of life to join voices to condemn Mr Onwubiko and his cohorts in the strongest possible terms.

Dr Abdulkadir described the escalation of anti-state propaganda by HURIWA as very worrisome and capable of plunging the nation into a crisis of unimaginable proportion.

“We are seeing a dangerous pattern that requires that the lies he is putting in the public space are expeditiously corrected before people think that is the correct state of affairs.

The latest of this failed attempt at using negative propaganda against the Nigerian state involved Onwubiko disparaging the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila. He futilely strived to create the impression that these reputable men are the enemy when the real enemy of the people is the person attempting to shove falsehood down their throats.” he said.

He condemned Mr Onwubiko for accusing General Buratai of sophistry because he dared to expose how politics and politicians are the real factors driving the widespread security breaches in the country.

“Interestingly, Onwubiko alluded to how banditry, kidnapping and terrorism are happening across the country without acknowledging that the people he works for are the ones that unleashed these evil as punishment on Nigerians for not voting to reintroduce corruption during the recent general elections.

“It is common knowledge in Nigeria that because of monetary and ethnic considerations, Onwubiko is a die hard supporter and canvasser for Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“The HURIWA businessman is aware that his client famously declared that killings and violence will intensify when President Muhammadu Buhari gets re-elected.

Dr Abdulkair said the predicted violence has not taken hold and one of its promoters is blaming the Chief of Army Staff for situating the problem where it is.

He added that at the right time, Onwubiko will have to answer for his contributions to the carnage that has been witnessed in some parts of the country.

“When that time comes he will be able to tell Nigerians how much he collected to launch the evil propaganda against the government and the persons that paid that money.

“Meanwhile, we realise that Onwubiko’s main interest is not General Buratai, whom he merely used to gain relevance and attract attention to his wares as a blackmailer. His intended target is the Speaker, Rt. Hon Gbajabiamila, whom he believes would be amenable to blackmail, only that his projection was wrong. Not only is the strategy wrong, the premises upon which he attempted to tarnish the image of the Speaker were faulty to the point where one have to begin to review his mental state.”

He alleged that Mr Onwubiko has a problem with the peace mission embarked upon by Rt. Hon. Gbajabiamila in Zamfara state, which he concluded was high treason.

“While this appear logical on the surface, an actual understanding of it will show a kind of deviousness that merits being confined to supervised care. He rather wants the bandits to be tried and no talks held with them even if that will bring solutions.

“We are at a loss if this is the same HURIWA/Onwubiko that chastised the government for not negotiating with extremists of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB), two groups that have been outlawed on account of their being militarised and being a terrorist group respectively.

“Two things stand out in this historic transaction of Onwubiko. He is first about the money and will sing to support any group that drops coin in his bowl, which was the basis on which the IMN bought his services to argue that government should dialogue with them.

“The second thing is that Onwubiko is an irredeemable ethnic bigot who thinks a terrorist IPoB should be pampered with negotiation and amnesty while bandits should be treated differently simply because they are from the north that he hates with all his being. The records are there and they speak to how the HURIWA leader has been playing two sides of the divide.

The NDF scribe described expressed HURIWA and Onwubiko as agents of destabilization that are in pursuit of ethnic agenda. Since the organization and its leader are one and the same.

“We confidently say that Onwubiko has proven that he does not know the difference between politics and agitating for human rights. If he does he would not have disingenuously attempted to retire the political contract he got to malign Buratai and Gbajabiamila under the sub-head of human rights. It stuck out like a sore thumb for what it is. A cheap propaganda that was badly packaged and delivered.

“We know Onwubiko as a confused bigot that can sell his family to the highest bidder or if the money arrives at a certain time in the right amount. His brand of activism is purely monetized at the very least it must appeal to his ethnic jingoism, for which he must be paid anyway.

He urged Onwubiko and his group to refund whatever they have been paid to carry out his latest assignment because he has not only failed those who sent him the errand but has also failed himself for not being able to come up with something more creative than the watery non-issues he tried to raise against the two leaders.

“He must also learn to not try gaining political capital out of something that Nigerians are trying to get rid of. His attempt to leverage on the terrorist attacks and kidnappings for making money is reprehensible and he is advised to desist from such irresponsible acts.” he concluded
