2019 Ember months: Army intensifies patrols, surveillance for a hitch free season

…Neutralise insurgents in Northeast

The Nigerian Army has assured that its troops will continue in their relentless efforts at combatting the threats of criminal insurgency and terrorism, armed banditry, kidnapping, herdsmen-farmers clashes, cultism and communal crises, amongst others as the year draws to a close.

In a statement, Media Coordinator of the Nigerian Army Operations Centre Col Aminu Iliyasu, said the Army has stepped up its operations throughout the country to get rid of criminal and insurgent elements who pose a security threat to citizens.

Full text of the statement reads below

2019 EMBER MONTHS: NIGERIAN ARMY TROOPS INTENSIFY OPERATIONS AGAINST CRIMINAL ELEMENTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY

In continuation of its step-up operations nationwide, Nigerian Army troops in various operational theatres across the Country continue to decimate and frustrate activities of criminal elements. This is in line with the resolve of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai to ensure the prevalence of a peaceful and conducive atmosphere for all citizens and residents in the Country as this year’s Ember months.

Notable achievements recorded by the troops between 29th September to 1st October 2019 were as follows:

Operation LAFIYA DOLE

In operation LAFIYA DOLE Theatre, criminal insurgents met their waterloo when troops of Sector 3 supported by the Air Task Force (ATF) successfully repelled an attack on Gubio in Gubio LGA of Borno State. The gallant troops neutralized 2 of the criminal insurgents and recovered one Gun Truck, 2 AK 47 Rifles, one Anti Air Craft Gun. Additionally, 51 civilians hitherto held hostage by the criminals were rescued during the encounter. The troops continue to dominate the area with fighting/clearing patrols, ambush, raids as well as cordon and search operations.

Similarly, troops of the Sector, acting on timely information also  arrested 4 male suspects with large consignments of dried fish intended for delivery to the criminal insurgents. All 4 suspects are currently undergoing interrogation where they are giving useful information.

In another development, troops of 7 Division Garrison in conjunction with their counterparts from 212 Battalion and Nigerian Army Super Camp 4 (NASC) during a clearance operation at Mada Village in Konduga LGA of Borno State arrested a pickup truck conveying 3 adult females, 15 adult males and 3 rustled cows. The claim by the suspects that they were of the Shuwa extraction was refuted by the locals in the area as none of the suspects could speak any of the local languages. Preliminary investigation has revealed that one of the suspects and an NGO operating within the Theatre had been communicating at various times. Investigation further revealed that the suspect is on a WhatsApp chat platform with the same NGO.

Similarly, troops of 27 Task Force Brigade Garrison while on aggressive patrol to deny criminal insurgents freedom of action within their Area of Responsibility (AOR) discovered 2 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted along the route in Buni Gari, Gujba LGA of Yobe State. The IEDs were safely detonated by the Explosive Ordinance Device (EOD) team.

Operation MESA

Nigerian Army troops continued to cover other parts of the Country within the ambit of Operation MESA to ensure the safety and security of the citizens. Troops of 245 Battalion while responding to a distress call, promptly intervened and averted a bloody clash at Mkpani community in Yakuur LGA of Cross River State between the youths of Ajare and Edume clans during a New Yam Festival held in the Community. Items recovered from the scene include 2 Dane guns, one locally made pistol, 2 axes and one cutlass.

In a related development, troops of 9 Brigade Garrison while on a joint patrol with personnel of the Nigeria Police Ejigbo Division in Suru-Lere LGA of Lagos State discovered an abandoned AK 47 Rifle with Registration Number 562558860 inside a drainage in the general area of Ejigbo. The recovered weapon has since been handed over to Nigeria Police Ejigbo Division for further action.

In the light of the daunting security challenges facing the country, the COAS, Lt Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai wishes to reassure the good citizens of our country of the unwavering resolve of the NA to safeguard the territorial integrity of our country in aid of civil authority. The Nigeria Army hereby requests our good and law-abiding citizens to go about their normal economic activities without fear of molestation. The populace is equally requested to please assist the Nigerian Army with any useful information that will assist in our operational efforts aimed at ridding the society of criminal elements and other miscreants.”

Meanwhile Troops of 192 Battalion, Sector 1 Operation LAFIYA DOLE during an ambush operation at Lokodissa general area of Gwoza Local Government of Borno State successfully neutralized one criminal insurgent and recovered one bicycle and some food items.

Additionally, same troops switched to a position where smoke was sighted. The troops moved swiftly and established contact with the criminal insurgents at Balalgaje general area, neutralised one of them and destroyed their criminal hideout and other belongings in the process.

Furthermore, troops continued to dominate the general area of Tansagua Junction, Kekeno, Mairari, Lingir, Cross Kauwa and Baga among others with patrols and ambushes to maintain the achieved serenity within the entire theatre.

Troops arrest 27 IPOB members, recover arms in Imo

While commending the troops, the Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Tukur Buratai called on Nigerians to avail the Nigerian Army formations and units nationwide with timely information that will assist them in ridding the communities of criminal elements and their nefarious and violent activities.

In a statement, the Nigerian Army Operations Media Coordinator, Col Aminu Iliyasu urged all law-abiding citizens to go about their businesses without fear of molestation.

In another development, troops of 82 Division Garrison, while carrying out their Operation MESA activities, averted a chaotic situation that could have led to the breakdown of law and order, where some trailer drivers at ONU-EBONYI ABAKALIKI barricaded ABAKALIKI – OGOJA Road to stage a protest over alleged maltreatment of one of their members by a Policeman.

The troops were able to restore normalcy in the general area with the employment of professional crisis management techniques.

‘Assassins’ kill housewife, drown three-year-old daughter in Kano

0

The Police in Kano has confirmed the killing of a housewife in Kano and the subsequent drowning of her 3-year-old daughter by unknown assassins.

The housewife, Farida Dahiru was said to have been killed on Sunday night while they were asleep.

The unknown assailants also drowned her three-year-old daughter in a well in Ungoggo local government area of Kano State.

The incident occurred at Gobirawa, a suburb of Ungoggo, after the assailants reportedly broke into the house of the victim.

Farida’s husband, Shu’aib Abdul-Mumin, was too traumatized to talk on the incident.

However, his relative, Yahya Lawal, said Abdul-Mumin had returned from the wedding dinner of his friend and found the doors of his house locked shortly before midnight.

“He (Abdul-Mumin) had just returned from his friend’s wedding dinner, when he discovered that his house was locked. He thought his wife had locked the door because the night was getting late.

“Then he began to knock on the door but there was no response. After several more knocks, he decided to break the door. As he entered the house, he met his wife slaughtered,” Lawal narrated.

He added that Abdul-Mumin suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness due to the shock he had received from the gory sight.

Lawal said after killing Farida, the assailants, also seized her sick daughter, who was receiving treatment for a fever, and threw her into a well in the compound, in which she drowned.

“When I brought out the child from the well I noticed that her hand still bore a cannula from which she was receiving IV fluid.

“The incident is very horrific, and we are very scared,” he said.

Police PRO, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the Police Commissioner, Ahmed Iliyasu, personally led officers to the scene of the incident after receiving a report.

“On Monday, around 12 am we received a sad report that some assailants broke into the house of Malam Shu’aibu Abdul-Mumin at Gobirawa and killed his wife and daughter. So, the Police Commissioner led a team of officers to the scene, where they arrested six suspects,” he said.

Kiyawa, a deputy superintendent of police, said the six suspects and any other person found to be involved in the dastardly act would be brought to justice as investigation was ongoing.

A year on, Crown Prince ‘gets pass from world leaders’ on Khashoggi murder

0

Weeks after journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s murder inside Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul, the kingdom’s crown prince attended the G20 summit in Argentina to an apparent cool reception.

During the official family photo, Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), who has faced allegations of ordering the October 2, 2018, killing, which he denies, stood at the far edge of the group portrait. Largely ignored by the leaders of the world’s largest economies, he exited the stage quickly afterwards, without stopping to speak to the others. “Saudi Crown Prince sidelined in G20 family photo”, “A bro-shake with Putin, a talking-to from Macron: The Saudi prince’s less-than-royal treatment at the G-20”, read some of the headlines after the November summit.

The leaders of France, Canada and the United Kingdom, meanwhile, said they pressed for an investigation into Khashoggi’s killing during their separate meetings with Crown Prince Mohammed.

But when the same G20 leaders gathered in Japan’s Osaka in June, things appeared different. This time, Crown Prince Mohammed stood front and centre in the family photo, sandwiched between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and US President Donald Trump, who at a personal breakfast earlier, congratulated the crown prince for doing a “spectacular job” in “opening up” Saudi Arabia and fighting “terrorism”.

The US president has not been the only leader to have heaped praise on Prince Mohammed over the past year, despite the global outcry over The Washinton Post columnist’s murder. During a February visit to Pakistan as part of an Asia tour that included stops in China and India, Prince Mohammed was given Pakistan’s highest civilian honour after signing investment deals worth $20bn.

NIFROP lauds Army on spiritual warfare seminar to defeat Boko Haram, extreme religious ideologies

0

The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organisation for Peace (NIFROP) has hailed the Nigerian Army for organising a spiritual warfare seminar to combat Boko Haram’s devilish ideologies.

Unknown to Nigerians, this practice isn’t new as some reputable nations’ military resorted to aggressive forms of prayers on the battlefield.

This concept was utilized by the North Americans in the form of evangelical warfare prayer since the 1980s.

In a press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, Secretary General of the group, Rev (Dr) Elijah Akuh said the Army deserves commendation for towing this honourable path, knowing that Boko Haram’s ideology is based on strict adherence to Wahhabism – an extreme form of Sunni Islam.

According to the clergyman, the essence of the conference was to properly educate troops and arm them against such ideologies that have been used in the past to infiltrate and break the ranks of any fighting force.

The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organisations for Peace, therefore, called on other security agencies to emulate the Army in conducting routine spiritual warfare.

The group added that this should serve as a challenge to spiritual and religious leaders on the need to support the Army in prayers and supplications in the fight against terrorism.

Read full statement below.

The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organisations for Peace in Nigeria (NIFROP) a conglomeration of faith-based organisations in Nigeria having extensively evaluated the operational strategies of the Nigerian Army in the fight against Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorist in Nigeria wishes to by this medium state in unequivocal terms that indeed the Nigerian Army has risen to the occasion in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.

This is hinged on the fact that the Boko Haram terrorist group over the years had indeed practiced a radical stance that has seen to the propagation of their ideology in the pursuit of their nefarious activities.

The beliefs of Boko Haram which tend to be centred on strict adherence to Wahhabism, which is an extremely strict form of Sunni Islam that sees many other forms of Islam as idolatrous is indeed worrisome and must be condemned by all well-meaning religious groups in Nigeria.

The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organisations for Peace wishes to state that it aligns with the various approaches embraced by the leadership of the Nigerian Army in confronting the Boko Haram terrorist group since 2009 when the group took up a violent campaign against the constituted authorities in Nigeria.

The recently concluded Nigerian Army Spiritual Warfare Seminar with the theme, countering insurgency and violent extremism in Nigeria through spiritual warfare could not have come at a better time in the light of the fact that the Boko Haram terrorist group has indeed utilized a religious ideology that if not tamed would ultimately give them the impetus to continue to perpetuate evil in North-East Nigeria.

The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organisations for Peace understands that in the battle of spiritual warfare, we need to begin with acknowledging that we are in a war and that such battles make up smaller components of the bigger picture.

These invisible or unseen forces, are real. There are forces, both angelic and demonic, that are actively working around us. There is evil that we fight in our spiritual warfare, and the Boko Haram warfare is not an exemption.

The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organisations for Peace states that the essence of the conference was to properly educate troops and arm them against such ideologies that have been used in the past to infiltrate and break the ranks of any fighting force in the world.

The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organisations for Peace also states that everything that occurs in the visible, physical world is directly connected in the spiritual world and as such the recent strategy introduced by the Nigerian Army is not out of place and a display of foresight by the leadership of the Nigerian Army in its quest to ultimately win the war against Boko Haram terrorists in Nigeria.

This is on the heels that militarization and aggressive forms of prayer is not a new concept as it has been utilized by the North Americans in the evangelical warfare prayer developed since the 1980s. They have elaborated a complex theology and prayer practice with a highly militarized discourse and set of rituals for doing spiritual battle and conducting prayer strikes on the battlefield.

The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organisations for Peace encourage other security agencies to deliberately carry out corporate social responsibilities initiatives in areas that will help Nigeria to defeat extreme religious ideologies like what Boko Haram and the Islamic Movement of Nigeria have done the country all in the name of religion.

Our troops must be charged to know and understand that no terrorist group fights for any religious group in the country, but instead their evil agenda. So this much the recently concluded Nigerian Army Warfare Seminar aims to bring to the limelight.

The National Inter-Faith and Religious Organisations for Peace commends the leadership of the Nigerian Army for this laudable initiative and consequently gives its approval for more of such conferences to be organized.

This conference as organized by the Nigerian Army should serve as a challenge to spiritual and religious leaders on the need to support the Nigerian Army in prayers and supplications in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Army has indeed done well with this noble initiative contrary to what some section of the media wants the unsuspecting members of the public to believe.

Spiritual ‘Warfare’ and Counter Terrorism

By Emmanuel Onwubiko
There are two different issues that have just cropped up in the public domain and have constituted the discussion points for most commentators observing the trajectories of the Counter terror war being waged by the Armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I must say that everyone who is somebody in the World of scholarship is involved in the observation of the goings on in the war on terror in the North East of Nigeria.
These two issues are the just announced national training exercises by the Nigerian Army to cover all parts of Nigeria and secondly but not the least is the talking point on the statement credited to the Nigeria’s Army Chief Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai that combats are not enough to overcome the terror threats in Nigeria but that there is the essential element of the spiritual dimension or what I have chosen to call the ‘Spiritual warfare’.
Beginning from the angle of the arguments and debates that are beginning to dominate the social media space which is the issue of the need for a Spiritual dimension to the fight on terror, I will state categorically that the statement by the Army Chief has been misinterpreted and misunderstood by some of these prominent commentators and agenda setters who have unleashed a wave of criticisms condemning the statement and painting a graphic picture of a military chief who no longer has any winning strategy to combat once and for a the terrible but formidable threats that armed boko Haram terrorists pose to the corporate existence of Nigeria.
This misinterpretation could have been avoided if those making the remarks had taking their time to read through the published speech made by the Army Chief and if these observers have found the intellectual presence of mind to just conduct just three hours research on the thematic area of what in the West is termed Islamic terrorism.
Before I delve into citations of authorities to show that what the Army Chief of Staff said is the correct statement of facts all over the contemporary World, I will state straightaway that there can be no terrorism without distorted religious and ideological belief system spread by some radicalized elements found in almost all religious groups and nationalities.
So, I admit that terrorism is not an exclusive preserve of bad MOSLEMS but even White Supremacists who have on many occasions engaged in mass shootings in New Zealand, USA and Australia are not MOSLEMS.
The best way forward as a strategy for winning the hearts and minds of the people of the territorial space whereby the war on terror is waged, is to accept the reality that it will take intensive Spiritual and theological reorientation by the real and genuine scholars of Islam for instance who should normally be expected and requested to play significant roles to change the wrong mindset of the younger elements who are rapidly been radicalized and wrongly indoctrinated  by the hierarchy of the boko Haram terrorists.
I will return to this point and back it up with contemporary but profound research findings. Terrorism is a very developing specialty with trailer load of scholarly works developed or about to be fully developed. By the last count, I have read about two dozen newly published academic findings on the different dimensions of the global war on terror which intensified since September 11th 2001 when the World saw the coordinated attacks by the Islamic terrorists group al-Qaeda against the United States of America on the morning of Tuesday September 11th 2001 which snowballed into a global incident since out of the well over 3,000 casualties, virtually every continent of the World lost their members.
But first let me remind these critics who I must admit mean well for Nigeria that the Chief of Army Staff did not call for the abdication of combats by the professional soldiers neither did he advocate that the soldiers who are fighting in the war fronts or flashpoints of war on terror should abandon their professional callings to embrace spiritual exercises in Churches and Mosques. Far from it.
Rather, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, said that terrorism and terrorist groups could not be eliminated alone by the military unless religious bodies and organizations in the country come to the “forefront of this spiritual battle.”
The army chief noted that the focus must be religious groups interfacing on addressing the ideologies which fuelled the Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists.
Buratai stated these on Monday in Abuja at a spiritual warfare seminar at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre with the theme, “countering insurgency and violent extremism in Nigeria through spiritual warfare.”
The army chief, who was represented by the Chief of Administration, Maj Gen Sani Yusuf, therefore, urges Islamic and Christian clerics across the army formations to join the fight against terrorism, and reorient the people against negative ideologies.
Buratai said, “It is easier to defeat Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists than their ideology because while we degrade the terrorists and their havens, the narrative of the ideology grows the group.
“Therefore, communities, families, and groups should join in the fight and narratives to reject and prevent the ideologies of the terrorists and extremist groups.
“Religious bodies and organizations in particular who interfaces regularly with the grassroots should be at the forefront of this spiritual battle and fashion out ways of stepping up their roles.
“The fight against terrorism, Boko Haram and ISWAP, as well as other security threats, cannot be left to the troops in the battlefield alone. Yes, we will do our duties but the need to tackle groups through spiritual warfare and re-orientating the followers against the ideology is also a necessity.
“It is a well-known fact that terrorism and terrorist groups cannot be totally eliminated by mainly military actions. This means focusing our efforts on the underlying narratives through ideologies that are employed by these terrorists to lure innocent citizens to their fold.
“The need to defeat the ideologies of Boko Haram and ISWAP is based on the awareness that it is the ideologies that enhance their resources and help to recruit new fighters to their fold and as such; kill their ideology and the terrorist movement withers.
The army chief added that religious leaders and clerics who regularly interfaced with members of the society must “fashion out ways of stepping up your roles, remembering that the fight against terrorism is a collective responsibility.”
At the risk of violating the seeming oath of secrecy sworn to when I enlisted as a member of a 7 man Presidential Committee on restoration of Peace and Dialogue in Northern Nigeria which sat for nearly three years prior to the emergence of the current administration, I will tell my readers that top Islamic clerics were part of that committee and their specific roles was to deploy their intellectual wherewithal and their iconic Islamic trainings to re-orientate members of boko haram terrorists whom we met in different undisclosed detention facilities all across Nigeria with the aim of deradicalizing them and reintegrating them through methodical reorientation to once more embrace constructive coexistence with divergent groups of people in the larger communities.
So Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai was much more than 100% correct to affirm that the war on terror can’t be conclusively and decisively won through physical means without activating the spiritual mechanisms and dimension.
Now let me quote the experts to back up my affirmations aforementioned.
In the scholarly article titled “Towards a definition of terrorist ideology by Gary A. Ackerman and Michael Burnham these versatile scholars and intellectuals reached a determination that to defeat terrorism you need to have a total appreciation of the underlying spiritual ideology governing these whole ranges of armed terrorists.
They wrote thus: “While conventional wisdom holds that the ideology espoused by a terrorist organization is somehow related to that organization’s actions, the precise nature of the relationship between these phenomena is hotly debated, with scholarship often yielding contrasting empirical results.”
Reminding us that we argue that one reason for this divergence in viewpoints and research findings is an inadequate understanding of what ideology actually is and how it relates to terrorism, but restated their deep conviction that it is the case as it were.
Indeed, these authors revealed that terrorism literature reveals widely disparate uses of the concept of terrorist ideology.
In this aforementioned article the writers endeavor to provide a common framework for approaching ideology in the context of terrorism studies by systematically building a new definition of terrorist ideology from first principles.
In so doing, they introduce a definition of terrorist ideology that is logically consistent, has robust theoretical underpinnings, and connects the study of ideology within terrorism to broader disciplinary research traditions regarding ideology.
This style they stated provides a conceptual foundation from which to examine terrorist ideology in an objective, systematic manner and thereby enables terrorism researchers to more productively investigate important outstanding questions, such as which aspects of an ideology are most relevant to violent behavior.
Another study on the online caliphate: internet usage and ISIS support in Arab World, James A. Piaza and Ahmet Guler who are experts argued that the internet has provided expanded opportunities for violent extremist groups to propagandize and recruit.
“The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, is an exemplar in that it has heavily invested in an online presence and uses online communities and social media to attract and retain supporters. Does ISIS’s online presence translate into a higher probability that individuals in its target audience will become supporters? In this study we analyze over 6,000 individuals in six Arab countries to find if those that use the internet to follow political news or to express political views are more likely to support ISIS”.
The researchers states that: “We find that respondents who get their news online are significantly more likely to support ISIS than those who follow the news on television or print media. Moreover, those who use online for a political expression are also more likely to express support for ISIS.”
Indeed, they reasoned that individuals who engage in online political discussion are more likely to support ISIS than those who engage in conventional political activity, though less than those who engage in contentious political behaviors such as attending a political protest. We conclude with a brief discussion of the academic and policy implications of these findings.
On the fears that the forthcoming national combat exercises by the Nigerian Army will infringe on human rights if one of the components is to restrict freedom of movements enshrined in the Constitution by way of demanding identification, I need to say that ad a human rights campaigner with deep interests in the internal security operations in the Country, we have received assurances that citizen’s human rights will not be wantonly violated since the Nigerian Army as a constitutionally created agency must comply with chapter 4 of the Nigerian Constitution and as I write the Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai has written and distributed a GREEN BOOK containing law based guidelines on protection of human rights of all citizens by the military during combat and non-combat internal operations. I have a copy of this book and I must state that the contents are so rich that Nigerians need not worry that the military will harass intimidate or abuse their human rights with reckless abandon. Moreover, accredited human rights groups will be on ground to observe the operations just as the Nigerian Army has a functional full-fledged department of civil and military relations with vibrant human rights desks in all segments of the Army presence nationwide.

Stop using Boko Haram as excuse to embezzle public funds – Group cautions northeast politicians

Politicians in northeastern part of Nigeria have been warned against using the activities of Boko Haram in the region to embezzle public funds.

The National Democratic Front, NDF , gave this warning while calling on political class in the area to wake up to its responsibility in the war against terrorism.

Addressing a news conference on Tuesday, NDF asked north east politicians to wake up and stop playing to the gallery.

Bolaji Abdukadir, SECRETARY-GENERAL of NDF, who addressed newsmen on behalf of the group, called on behalf of the group, tasked the politicians to start undoing the damage they did to themselves to that they can finally begin to enjoy peace and security like other parts of the country.

His speech below.

The National Democratic Front, NDF, has been following the war against terrorism in the north-east, especially Borno state, with keen interest given its impact on long term peace and security for Nigeria. One worrisome trend we discovered is that the war against terrorism continues be politicised to the point of almost having a war within a war.

In the lead up to the 2019 General Elections, NDF raised alarm over the opposition’s support for terrorists in the hope of using them to discredit the then candidacy of President Muhammadu Buhari by creating the impression that he has failed to secure the country. The elections are now over yet the monster set in motion out of political desperation has continue to grow without those that awoken it refusing to tame it.

In addition to refusing to accept responsibility for re-arming Boko Haram terrorists, it appears politically embittered persons have continue to empower terrorists in the region. They have even scaled up their support to now include endorsement of the terror group by ascribing invincibility to its fighters while demonizing the army that is sacrificing much to restore peace and security to the troubled area.

This unsettling development has been manifesting in the form of media interviews, planted or sponsored news reports and statements that stop short of recognizing Boko Haram as a parallel nation to whom these politicians defer.

They have sunken to a new low as demonstrated by a member of the House of Representatives, Ahmadu Jaha, who used Green Chambers of the National Assembly to sing the praises of the terrorist organization, which he rated higher than the military of his own country, and that is assuming he still considers himself a Nigerian and not a subject of an illusionary Islamic State caliphate.

It is tragic that this surrender to Boko Haram by these type of politicians is more deliberate than circumstantial. There was a coordinated willingness to abdicate political responsibility to terrorists.

This is why the international media partners of these politicians are able to report that insurgents are providing essential services that politicians have failed to provide for their own constituents, which in turn makes these constituents to become willing informants for terrorists. So it rarely matters that the military continually decimate the terrorists, the collusion of the politicians continue to drive people in the affected areas back into the embrace of Boko Haram.

So much as military might, strategy, engagement and persistence has been keeping the terrorists in check, the political will and action to end terrorism are still missing.

NDF is demanding that the politicians in the northeast must wake up to their responsibility and stop blaming others for the woes they have brought upon their own region.

They have to start undoing the damage they did to themselves to that they can finally begin to enjoy peace and security like other parts of the country.

A starting point the NDF is prescribing is for the politicians from the north east to cease and desist from giving further support to Boko Haram, whether directly or indirectly.

This include these politicians reviewing the money they give out to people that eventually funnel same to the terrorists. They must also cease hostile communication against the military since this only serves to boost the morale of insurgents while depressing troops’.

It is trite to say that north east politicians must stop playing politics with the issue of insurgency by waking up to support the military and the rest of the world to end the scourge of Boko Haram.

The next step is for these politicians to unanimously volunteer information that will assist the military and security agencies in a way that will support the decommissioning of the terrorist cells that enjoy political support and protection. It is critical for this to happen since these cells that enjoy the protection of politicians are key tools for recruiting new members for the terrorists.

A further requirement is for the politicians to allow money meant for rebuilding the northeast to be used for exactly that purpose instead of embezzling it like they had done funds meant for their constituencies for several decades.

They must realize that such funds are not meant for buying bullet proof cars or escaping to the cushy life in Abuja but is rather meant to develop the region so that the people will identify with them instead of being sympathetic to terrorists.

When these other steps have been taken, the politicians must then reset their behaviour to appreciate and focus on what is needed to develop their constituencies.

The things that they had refused to provide for their citizens for several decades must now be urgently provided to reverse not just the punishing scourge of terrorism but to also eradicate the sheer human misery that is the existence of people in the area even before the insurgency took hold.

They need to focus on building infrastructure, schools, hospitals, good roads and facilities that will help rebuild the economy of the region. This will also help to return people in liberated communities back to their farms so that they can again become productive to themselves and to the overall economy.

These are the minimum basics that must be provided for the people, who in spite of their situation have put up with selfish politicians that they are saddled with.

Morality requires that the politicians wake up to these responsibilities instead of trying to blame the military or the federal government for the problem they created for themselves and their people.
NDF is strongly of the view that the people of the northeast begin to hold their politicians to account in this manner until they learn what their responsibilities are and get about meeting them.

The citizens should consider strong monitoring of the finances of these politicians and reporting anything untoward to the nation’s anti-graft agencies.

Politicians from the northeast must not continue be the weak link in the safety, security and development of Nigeria.
