Another South African returnee arrested for armed robbery in Lagos

0

Two suspected members of a robbery gang, one of them a South African returnee, have been arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, for allegedly dispossessing a laptop dealer of three Apple laptops valued at N1.5million at gunpoint.

The suspects: Victor Remi, 27, who claims to be a forex trader and Ekeh Maxwell, 23, a musician, posed as a driver and Managing Director of a company. They ordered for the Apple laptops (MacBook Pro – 2018 edition), only to dispossess them of the dealer on arrival at the designated point of collection.

During interrogation, the suspects, both residents of 18, Alexandra Street, Abule Egba, Lagos, disclosed that they got details of their victim through his twitter handle.

According to the South Africa returnee, Remi, “I told the dealer I was the Managing Director of a new company on Acme Road, Ikeja. I also told him that my daughter recommended him and that his laptops were good. I ordered one for myself and another for my secretary and told him to bring them.

“It took us a week to initiate, perfect and execute the plan. My colleague, Maxwell, borrowed his brother’s Camry car (FKJ 833 EZ) for the deed. We bought a toy gun and painted it. I told the dealer to meet me at Acme Crescent because we knew the location was a desolate area”.

” While Maxwell drove, I sent the dealer a message on WhatsApp to bring the consignment to my office, last Monday. I told him that my driver would pick him up at Acme Crescent.

“Maxwell picked him at the designated point, while I joined then few meters from where he entered. He (dealer) sat in front with the laptops. Immediately I entered, I placed the gun on his neck and ordered him to surrender them. We wanted to take his phone too but he pleaded not to be stripped of everything. We told him to alight from the car and we zoomed off”.

Preliminary investigation as gathered revealed that after the operation, Remi told his accomplice that the laptops were two instead of three. He further lied that he sold each of the two laptops, N250,000 each instead of the N500,000.

On his part, Maxwell, who corroborated Remi’s claim, said he got N250,000, after Remix sold the laptops, adding that his partner threw the toy gun away after the operation He also expressed disappointment when he realised that Remi lied to him on the number of laptops and the amount they were sold.

Narrating his ordeal, the laptop dealer who did not want his name in print, said that the main suspect, Remi, gave his identity as Uche during the conversation on social media.

Jonathan was asleep, he didn’t allow UK rescue Chibok girls – David Cameron

0

A former British prime minister, David Cameron, has alleged that ex-President Goodluck Jonathan did not give enough support to Britain during the abduction of 274 schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno state.

The abduction, which took place on April 14 2014, had sparked a global outrage following which the international community offered to assist Nigeria.

In For The Record, his memoir, Cameron, who was in office at the time of the incident, said British troops traced the location of some of the victims and offered to help but Jonathan refused.

“Iraq wasn’t the only place we would need our military to counter this extremist menace. Boko Haram in Nigeria was linked to al-Qaeda, and believed Western education and lifestyles were a sin (the meaning behind its name). It too wanted to institute a caliphate, and like ISIS it would use whatever barbaric means it thought necessary,” Cameron wrote.

“In early 2014 a group of its fighters centered the government secondary school in the village of Chibok, seizing 276 teenage girls. They were taken to camps deep in the forest. The Christians among them were forced to convert to Islam. Many were sold as slaves, entering the same endless violent nightmare the Yazidi women suffered.

“As ‘Bring Back Our Girls’ campaign spread across the world, we embedded a team of military and intelligence experts in Nigeria, and sent spy planes and Tornadoes with thermal imaging to search for the missing girls. And, amazingly, from the skies above a forest three times the size of Wales, we managed to locate some of them.

“But Nigeria’s president, Goodluck Jonathan, seemed to be asleep at the wheel. When he eventually made a statement, it was to accuse the campaigners of politicising the tragedy. And absolutely crucially, when we offered to help rescue the girls we had located, he refused.”

The ex-British prime minister wrote on how the Archbishop of Canterbury was contacted to assist during the intervention in Nigeria.

“We had to play the long game focusing on a much bigger training effort for the Nigerian military and intelligence forces and trying to promote more energetic leaders from the younger generation. The Archbishop of Canterbury, as an expert on Nigeria, could be particularly useful on this and I invited him to join our NSC discussion,” he wrote.

“Some of the girls have managed to escape over the following four years, and others have been released, but over a hundred are still missing. Once again. the combination of lslamist extremism and bad governance proved fatal.

“How did I feel about all this at the end of 2014? The answer is, depressed. ISIS now occupied an area larger than Britain. A similar brand of terrorism was being wrought by Boko Harem in west Africa), another ISIS affiliate in north Africa, and by al-Shabab (‘the youth) in east Africa, while related groups were springing up in the Philippines, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and the Caucasus. There seemed to be no stopping an evil ideology that seduced minds from the badlands of Syt’tato bedrooms in Birmingham.

When I spoke about the challenge publicly I tried to remain measured and resolute. But privately did asked myself, would we ever be able to defeat this thing?

Troops dislodge Boko Haram, mount heavy patrol in Chibok Community

Troops of Operation Lafiya Dole have successfully dislodged advancing Boko Haram insurgents in Muna Province following credible reports that some Boko Haram terrorists had stormed the area which lies along the road linking Maiduguri to Mafa, Dikwa, Ngala, and Kalabalge Local Government Areas of Borno State and restored peace.

Upon noticing the artillery vehicles and Armoured Personnel Carriers approaching Muna Province, the marauders withdrew from the community and took to their heels. As a result, the troops engaged in a hot pursuit of the fleeing bandits after dislodging them from the community.

Accordingly, troops swiftly dominated the area and further mounted patrol after liberating the community from the marauders.

Credible intelligence revealed that the ‘insurgents’ are desperately in need for food items and other basic necessities, which are acutely lacking due to effective blockade tactic occasioned by the recently introduced super camp concept of operation into the mission area.

As a result of the blockade, bandits are resorting to attacking vulnerable communities and areas desperately craving for food and other necessities of life.

Similarly, following reports that terrorists have attacked and started burning houses in Mifa community in Chibok LGA, troops of Sector 3, Operation LAFIYA DOLE have equally stormed the area, flushed out the criminals (who run away for their useless lifes) and restored order in Mifa village.

The security forces, upon receiving the distress call on Thursday, October 3, 2019, at about 2000pm, swiftly mobilized and stormed the village, chasing away the terrorists.

At the moment, heavy patrols are ongoing at both Muna Province and several communities in Chibok and the situation has been normalized. Residents of the areas who fled during the terrorists’ attacks have so far returned to their homes.

Following recent successes recorded by the Nigerian Army on several fronts in the fight against terrorism, banditry and other violent criminals, Nigerians have taken to the social media to heap out accolades to troops on the fields.

The kudos were in reaction to a viral video, with the caption, “In search of Boko Haram, see what the Nigerian Army soldiers are going through. Even with the heavy and constant rain in the Lake Chad area, Nigerian troops were not reluctant in search of the fleeing Boko Haram. Defeating the terrorists is their only mission.”

According to the comments read, several of them prayed for more success to be recorded by troops.

A commentator, Tumaka Dele said, “God bless the officers and men of the NA and give no peace to the saboteurs.”

Another Nigerian, Bala Abdullahi said, “God bless our gallant Nigerian soldiers, you deserve more than prayers, wishing you the best in the national interest.”

For Ibrahim Ahmad Ahmad, he said, “May Allah help our soldiers in Nigeria.”

Similarly, Akintola Oladeji said, “May God bless them,” while Paschal Nwanochie said, “God bless the Nigerian Army.”

Dozens of other comments from viewers of the video, revolved around blessing of the troops and praying for their complete routing of insurgents and bandits.

It would be recalled that recently, the Nigerian Army onslaught on terrorists elements was intensified, leading to further decimating of the group.

Just two days ago, an ambush on the group by the Army on the fringes of Gwoza in Borno State, led to killing of three of them, injuring several, while the Army and Civilian JTF recorded no casualties.

Troops of Special Response Area (SRA) Pulka under the Nigerian Army Super Camp Gwoza have killed three insurgents and recover several arms an ammunition in a ambush.

The ambush which was done in collaboration with the Civilian Joint Task Force followed credible information from some patriotic Nigerians about terrorists movement along Banki Road Junction, Pulka in Gwoza.

Consequently, two AK 47 Rifles and two motor cycles were recovered while several terrorists were reportedly wounded during the ambush.

Similarly, at about 10:50pm on 3rd October 2019, in what seems like a repraisal attack to avenge the lost of their members in the ambush conducted by the troops, some marauders/criminals woefully attacked the Delta Company Location of the SRA at Pulka.

Following the development, the Acting General Officer Commanding 7 Division and Commander Sector 1 Operation LAFIYA DOLE Brigadier General AK Ibrahim was in SRA Pulka where he interacted with the troops, commended them for the successes so far and urged them to remain committed and unwavering in the struggle to end the insurgency soon.

Comedian Mc Fine arrested for spreading fake news

Lawrence Audu with Agency News

The police on Thursday said it had arrested a comedian, Augustine Valentine, popularly known as `MC Fine’, for alleged spread of fake news.

Biodun Makanjuola, Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the force in Bwari, FCT, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), that Mr Valentine posted a false report on facebook alleging the apprehension of a female kidnapper.

“After investigation, we found the report to be fake,” he said.

NAN reports that the middle-aged woman, simply identified as Zulai, had been attacked on Wednesday, around Zenith Bank area in Bwari, over the suspicion that she had attempted to kidnap a two-year-old male child.

The police, who were quick to intervene, arrested the woman and, during investigation, found out that she was physically and psychologically unstable.

The DPO told NAN that while the investigation was going on, Mr Valentine posted misleading information on the incident, on the social media platform.

“When she was brought here, I asked my people to first take her to the General Hospital for medicals. They came back with a medical report indicating that she was suffering from depression.

“The report also referred her to Karu Psychiatric Hospital for proper evaluation. Right now, we are preparing to take her there.

“We were still on the matter when I started receiving calls about a post on Facebook claiming that the woman was a kidnapper. The report claimed that her phone had message conversations on how many children to be kidnapped.

“I made efforts and finally discovered who posted the story, brought him here for questioning, and he confessed he only added some of the details to add glamour to the story.”

The DPO, while expressing displeasure over the incident, cautioned against spreading unverified news, pointing out that such actions could cause a negative impact on people involved and result in a security breach in the affected community.

“We are working with the affected families to douse the tension. This town can be volatile, so we are not taking anything for granted,” he said.

Speaking with NAN, Mr Valentine, who regretted his action, admitted that he was not at the scene of the incident when it occurred on Wednesday.

According to him, the pictures and the alleged story were sent to him via Whatsapp, a social media platform, by an unknown number.

He had earlier raised a fake alarm, through his facebook account, that a woman was caught in Bwari attempting to steal a child who was playing with his mates around the Bwari market.

Mr Valentine, on facebook, claimed that “the crowd gathered, checked her phone which revealed how many children she was asked to provide by her accomplices”.

Dikko Samuel, Mai Angwuan Bwari, who is also the grandfather of the child Ms Zulai was accused of attempting to kidnap, told NAN that his wife called his attention to the incident when he was on his farm.

According to him, his wife, who was cooking corn by the roadside, turned and saw the suspected kidnapper holding the child and walking away.

“That was when she raised an alarm and people gathered and started attacking the woman. They were about to lynch her when we intervened and told the angry crowd that she was insane.

“I was also made to understand that she loves children and that they always followed her around because she gave them sweets and biscuits.”

When NAN visited the house of the suspected kidnapper, the son of the owner of the property on which she lived, who also pleaded anonymity, said that she had lived in the house for more than a decade.

According to him, Ms Zulai had been unstable for a long time but was harmless and had never shown any sign of violence or criminal behaviour.

He also said that she sometimes had a lot of children in her company, buy sweets and other food items for them when they surrounded her, with no parent complaining of a missing child.
