Boko Haram: Appreciating President Buhari’s Courage

By David Onmeje

Africa by conception is designed by God Himself to be a great continent. But very often, Africans privileged to mount leadership positions on the continent are devoid of the essential ingredients which empowers a leader towards success in the nations they rule.

The phenomenon became widespread after most African states kissed the romance of independence from colonial masters. The aspiration to leadership and the zeal to succeed while on the leadership podium requires courage. A leader in the truest sense is a carrier of the destiny or fate of millions of people. So, to succeed itself demands a consistent dosage of courage or else, frustrations easily beckons a leader to the path of failures.

Unfortunately, Today, purveyors of leadership history only mention a few African leaders (past and present) who have conquered this standards of leadership. There are really very few African leaders qualified for citation in exemplary leadership courage that should lead to success.

Great African leaders whose names often pops up under such leadership interrogations include Ghana’s Kweme Nkurmah; Burkina Faso’s Captain Thomas Sankara; South Africa’s Nelson Mandela; Ethiopia’s Halie Selassie, Rwanda’s Paul Kagame and of course, President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria among a few others.

But there is an indubitable sense in arguments by those who think what is Africa’s heaviest burden is lack of leadership courage. Most African leaders know the right thing to do, but are barren of the courage to dare it or what is commonly referred to as the “political will,” because of the ungodly allures and fascinations of leadership. It explains why there are few of such individuals and personalities across Africa.

Nonetheless, the incumbent President of Nigeria, a reputable retired Army officer, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari stands out tall in leadership courage. President Buhari has twice been on Nigeria’s leadership saddle. He first came as a military Head of State in 1984 and in 2015, he returned as a democratic President. To say, he is one of Nigeria’s finest leaders of all times, for all the times he has mounted the leadership mantle is to emphasize the obvious.

What is inseparable with his persona is that in all instances, President Buhari has demonstrated leadership courage to succeed and leave landmark legacies for his country. Nigeria is a very difficult country to govern; but President Buhari has persistently manifested the courage to wither the storm to success by confronting the nation’s teething problems unflinchingly and boldly.

John Maxwell once said; “ A great leader’s courage to fulfill his vision comes from passion, not position.” President Buhari is a replica of this reconstruction of the thoughts of a leader. Therefore, Buhari does not flinch in taking the right leadership decisions insofar as it leads to light at the end of the tunnel. He steps on toes and wade off the lobbying shadows of even close political associates once he is bent on doing the right thing.

Every Nigerian is aware of the severity and toughness of the problems which engulfed Nigeria when the Buhari Presidency was inaugurated. It was more intensified on insecurity as signposted by Boko Haram insurgency and other crumbling insurrections around the country.

President Buhari knew he had to urgently tackle the Boko Haram menace. And it required courage to make the right decisions on the rightful, competent and trusted military officers to lead the battle against insurgency. And President Buhari has not left anyone disillusioned in the manner he has handled insurgencies and insurrections. He has demonstrated rare courage; unbelievable courage and uncommon courage to explore the fields in anti-terrorism combats where his predecessors dreaded.

Mr. President astounded Nigerians when he assembled his team of Security Chiefs. He opted to appoint serving military officers whom he has never met before. But he had reason to trust their capacity and competence to perform the task as certified by their worthy profiles.

In the Nigerian Army, President Buhari spotted Lt. Gen. TY Buratai and anointed him the Chief of Army Staff (COAS). Further justifying his explicit confidence in Gen. Buratai, he crowned him leader of the counter-insurgency operations.

What many Nigerians failed to decode in Mr. President’s choice of Gen. Buratai was the desire to have a COAS and helmsman of counter-terrorism in Nigeria in the personality of an officer who could personally go to the trenches, comb the caves, forests and mountains of the Northeast in search of insurgents hideous camps. He wanted a leader of counter-insurgency who will take the war to insurgents’ doorsteps.

And Gen. Buratai’s antecedents fitted into President Buhari’s ideal leader of the war. And the Army Chief has neither failed the President nor Nigerians, as he is doing it without fear or favour. The Army Chief is also delivering on this mandate and meeting his targets in the frontlines’ rewardingly.

Thus, in Gen. Buratai presence on the turf in combating Boko Haram terrorism, one is assailed with the courage of Mr. President’s decision to anoint him leader of this battle, which Nigeria is poised to win at all cost. It is President Buhari’s courage in the appointment of Gen. Buratai that has ensured the reclamation of all the 18 local governments in the Northeast under the captivity of insurgents.

The courage of the President’s decision is mirrored in Gen. Buratai’s leading of troops to halt the spread of Boko Haram terrorism to all parts of Northern Nigeria and its aggressive attempts to extend tentacles to Southern Nigeria.

Nigerians can see and feel the courage of the Presidential decision in the freedom of about 20, 000 Nigerians held hostage in Boko Haram gulags in the Northeast. And the same courage has emboldened Gen. Buratai to demystify the dreaded Sambisa forest, Boko Haram’s formerly untouchable haven.

The same Presidential courage in leadership decision has propelled Gen. Buratai to confine Boko Haram operations in a few far-flung areas in the Northeast and the Lake Chad Basin. The resultant effect has been the desertion of IDPs camps and the corresponding return of internally displaced persons to abandoned villages and communities in the region. The development is made possible because there is palpable peace and security in a sizable proportion of the devastated Northeast.

Gen. Buratai is again ennobled by the presidential courage in appointing him leader of counter-insurgency operations by ensuring the rehabilitation and rebuilding process of communities ruined by insurgency in the Northeast are progressing seamlessly to resettle a once pauperized and distressed villagers’.

So, whatever positive changes or bliss Nigerians have experienced in the country’s Boko Haram combats are plausible testimonies of the outcomes of that rare leadership courage. It is the incredible and uncommon courage exhibited by President Buhari by appointing a trusted and competent Army General like Buratai to lead the battle against insurgency.

This presidential courage has harvested for Nigerians unbeatable gains in the combat of Boko Haram terrorism. It is a remarkable departure from the tradition of the past, when excuses reigned and insurgency expanded unimaginably in helpless indignation of the nation’s military.

President Buhari’s courageous actions has aligned with the preachments of Alan Cohen, who said; “It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful. There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life, and in change there is power.”

NASS praises army’s performance, pledges more support

The National Assembly Joint Committee on Army has praised officers and men of the Nigerian Army for their dogged commitment to the sovereignty of the nation through professionalism in the discharge of their constitutional duties.

Sen. Ali Ndume, Chairman, Senate Committee on Army and Mr Abdulrazak Namdas, Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Army, stated this during a visit to Army Headquarters in Abuja after an assessment tour of Army formations across the country.

Ndume said that the committee’s visit was a continuation of their oversight assignment to various army formations across the country to carry out assessment needs of the army.

He said that there was need for the joint committee to robustly engage with the leadership of the army in order to address their challenges.

Ndume said that the committee was pleased with the various improvements being recorded by the army in terms of personnel conduct and commitment to tackling the security challenges in the country.

”We are here to have a close discussion to map out the way forward and what you require from us and we will do the constitutional responsibility that is required on us.

“For what we have seen so far, we are very proud of the Nigerian army. What we have seen in Zaria, Maiduguri, everywhere and the report we have received is very encouraging.

“We are proud of you and we will continue to give you the support and you should not relent in your effort until you see that Nigerian army goes back to where it used to be,” he said.

Namdas commended the army for looking inward for some of its equipment needs through the Defence Industry Cooperation of Nigeria (DICON).

He urged the army authorities to continue to exploit the potentials and capabilities of its engineers to boost its equipment needs.

Namdas said that the national assembly would continue to support the army by ensuring that they are given special consideration.

“We are very proud of what is on ground and the level of professionalism of the Nigerian soldiers.

“We have seen how you have independently tried to source for MRAPs and others machines on your own and if you can look inward, that means that we are going places,” he said.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, assured the committee that the Nigerian army would continue to uphold the constitution of Nigeria.

Buratai said that what the committee had seen in different formations was a true reflection of what the current Nigerian army represents.

He said that the army had embarked on a number of projects across its barracks nationwide to ensure that its officers and soldiers and their families lived in a befitting accommodation.

Buratai further disclosed that the authorities had invested a lot in the training of its personnel both locally and internationally as well as other local training exercises to enhance their capabilities.

He commended the national assembly for considering additional sources of funding for the armed forces, adding that all the activities of the army require serious funding.

“Be rest assured that the Nigerian army will remain loyal to the constitution and will support you to carry out your oversight functions.

“We will also ensure that our constitutional responsibilities are professionally conducted and what you saw really is a true reflection of Nigerian army of today.

“They are professional, they are committed, they are discipline, they are loyal and we have taken bold steps not only in expanding the Nigerian army in terms of its order of battles; new formations and units have been created.”

Border closure a good omen for Nigeria’s economy – RIFAN

0

Alhaji Aminu Goronyo, National President, Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN), has said that the closure of the country’s land borders is a good omen for Nigeria’s blossoming economy.

This, the RIFAN National President says, has begun to bolster the nation’s economy, hence, it is now becoming more formidably robust and transformed, which is expected to translate into more tangible prosperity for the country.
He further observed that it was not just for the benefit of local rice producers but to encourage and inculcate the spirit of nationalism, patriotism and economic discipline in Nigerians for self-sufficiency in food production.

Similarly, he noted that ” it is to the advantage of our farmers, processors and millers. It has also created massive employment, boosted the agriculture sector as well as income among Nigerians”, he pointed out.

Goronyo who spoke in Sokoto Tuesday said the directive has saved the country over N300bn used annually in importing rice in the past, which supported and boosted the economy of the exporting countries to the disadvantage of Nigeria.

“It has supported their economies in terms of infrastructural development employment and so many other developmental projects at the expense of our efforts. It is a thing to celebrate that all these have been checked and brought under control with the closure of our borders.

According to the RIFAN President” Nigeria is only using 20% of such sum to produce over 10m metric tonnes of paddy rice which is above our consumption ration of 7.5m metric tonnes.

” It may interest Nigerians to know that between 2015 to date, Nigerians percentage of rice consumption has been significantly from local production.
” Therefore, I am urging Nigerians to see the Federal Government strategic border closure as a wake up call to patriotism and not about rice producers making money rather to ensure Nigerians are remarkably producing what we eat locally thus open window for export to earn foreign exchange for economic prosperity”, he stressed.

He added that” we cannot continue to be dependant on foreign rice which we have the land and fertility to produce in large quantum.

Davido impregnated my sister -Lady alleges in a video

0

Two Nigerian sisters have began to trend on social media over a quite shocking allegation they’re making against singer, Davido days after welcoming his first son.

The ladies are seen in the video claiming that the singer got one of them impregnated after they met few weeks ago at the Eko Hotel & Suites in Lagos.

They claim they’re not after the singer’s money but only want him to father the child he put into one of them… There’s been mixed reactions over their allegations as a lot of people on social media are parading them as clowns seeking for cheap clout.

Their ‘accent’ which is rather ‘foreign’ and possibly originates from their tongues alone, is what has some social media users amused and not taking their allegations serious.

The video is in the form of an interview as the person behind the camera asks few questions while they vent their anger over the singer’s failure to acknowledge he’s going to be fathering a new child from them.

The person behind the camera – a lady presumably – asks how long the pregnancy has gone and the response is “just few weeks now”.

Watch the video that has netizens laughing instead of sympathizing over their plight.

DPR seals 167 stations in Ibadan

0

No fewer than 167 filling stations have been sealed off by the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, Ibadan Field Office from January till date.

The seal off was as a result of various operational infractions ranging from under-dispensing of petroleum products, especially petroleum, to inability to present valid operation license, poor environment and unavailability of required safety equipment at the petrol stations.

This is as the Department also warned retail gas sellers dispensing from cylinders to desist from such practices, saying it is illegal and those caught in such practice would be severely sanctioned.

The Operation Controller, Ibadan Field Office of the DPR, Mr Yemi Olaonipekun, made the revelations after leading a team of officials on an inspection tour of petrol and gas stations across Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Tuesday.

Some of the top officials of the Field Office that accompanied Olaonipekun on the inspection include the Operations Manager, Mr Sadiq Ibrahim and Head, Corporate Services, Mrs Ini Ozemekhe, amongst others.

While noting that some of the sealed stations have valid operational license, he said the Agency still insisted on sealing them for other operational inadequacies which was against the stipulated guidelines, adding that such is to serve as deterrent to others.

The inspection exercise also saw three filling stations sealed for various anomalies. Some of those affected include, Forte oil, Tibsco Oil, Amazing oil and Oduwoye Global Service, all within the Akobo-Bashorun axis of Ibadan.

Olaonipekun said, “The reason for this exercise is to continue to monitor the activities of marketers, both gas marketers and white product marketers, that is, filling stations within our area of operations, which is Oyo State. We have been doing that and we want to continue to increase the tempo of our surveillance activities to ensure that they are doing the right thing at all times.”

He disclosed that the exercise would continue because the DPR wants to ensure that whatever people buy at the forecourt is actually what they have paid for, saying the Department does not want people to be short-changed.

The Operation Controller noted, “And why we continue to monitor gas plants also is that now people are using cooking gas more than before because kerosene is no longer that much available. As much as people are using the gas, we expect them to be aware of the safety implications not only for the gas plants owners but for those that are also buying gas for their consumption.”

While speaking on retail gas filing outlets sited within the neighbourhood, the Controller said the Department is concerned about the distance of gas outfits to residential areas, adding that there is a distance specified in the Petroleum Regulations and Guidelines that must be met for operations to be alright.

“Selling gas cylinders within a neighbourhood is not approved, it is illegal and if anybody is caught doing that there is penalty for that. Transferring gas from one cylinder into another cylinder is illegal and we are clamping down on such activity,” he disclosed.

Olaonipekun stated: “We seize their cylinders when caught. It is also dangerous because you cannot assume that there won’t be escape of gas into the atmosphere and where vehicles may be passing or any other source of ignition around that area when you are doing the transfer makes it very dangerous and risky.”

He added that the reason for the exercise by the DPR is to make sure that the right thing is done and that the Department is on top of every activity in oil and gas in Ibadan area, giving the assurance that it would be a continuous exercise.

Turkey, Russia reach deal for YPG move out of Syria border area

0

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says a deal has been reached with Russia for Kurdish fighters to withdraw from a Turkish-ruled “safe zone” in northeast Syria within 150 hours, after which Ankara and Moscow will run joint patrols around the area.

The announcement was made after marathon talks in Sochi between Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, hours before a United States-brokered five-day truce between Turkish and Kurdish-led forces was due to expire.

On October 9, Turkey launched an offensive aimed at carving out a “safe zone” cleared of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which Ankara considers “terrorists”, as well as at repatriating some of the 3.6 million refugees currently residing on its soil.

According to the deal announced at a joint news conference in Sochi, Ankara will control a 32km-wide (20 miles) area between the towns of Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ain, which covers 120km (75 miles) of the Turkish-Syrian border.

Beginning on Wednesday at noon, Russian military police and Syrian border guards will start removing the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which spearhead the SDF, and their weapons 30km (19 miles) from the border area. Once this is complete, within 150 hours, Turkish and Russian forces will run joint patrols 10km (six miles) to the east and west of the zone.

Ankara and Moscow, which have backed opposing sides in Syria’s long-running war, also reiterated to their commitment to the preservation of the political unity and territorial integrity of Syria and the protection of national security of Turkey.

The Sochi memorandum also said the YPG and their weapons would be removed from Manbij and Tal Rifat, where Syrian government forces moved in after the Kurdish-led fighters struck a deal with Damascus to fend off a Turkish assault. Russia is Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s main military ally.

Since last week’s truce deal, Ankara had repeatedly warned that the offensive would immediately restart if the SDF did not withdraw from the region.

“Turkey needed an outcome that satisfied its security concerns,” Ahmet K Han, a Turkish professor of international relations, said.

“And although the ‘safe zone’ is not as large as Turkey wants, Russian and Syrian control on the areas previously held by the YPG and its removal from the region satisfy these concerns,” he added.

Turkey had long said it wanted to establish a 444km-long (276-mile) and 32km-wide (20-mile) “safe zone”. However, during the truce, the US and the SDF said the withdrawal would only cover an area of about 120km (75 miles) between the towns of Ras al-Ain and Tal Abyad – something that was also confirmed by the agreement reached in Sochi.

Top Diplomat testifies in Trump’s impeachment inquiry

0

President Donald Trump’s impeachment battle hit dangerous new territory Tuesday with what a Democrat called “explosive” testimony supporting allegations that he pressured Ukraine for dirt on a political opponent.

Beset by tensions at home and abroad, Trump sparked yet more controversy with his use of the racially charged word “lynching” to describe his predicament.

His impeachment looked ever more likely after the Democratic-led lower house of Congress questioned the acting US ambassador to Ukraine, Bill Taylor.

Taylor is seen as a crucial witness in the case against Trump, who is accused of abusing his power to push Ukraine to investigate one of his main 2020 election rivals, Democrat Joe Biden.

The hearing was behind closed doors, but according to The Washington Post and CNN, Taylor used opening remarks to confirm that the White House repeatedly sought to pressure Ukraine — and said it would not deliver US military assistance without results.

Taylor said he was told Trump wanted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “to state publicly” that he would investigate, according to his leaked opening statement.

He said that the US ambassador to the European Union, Gordon Sondland, told him that “‘everything’ was dependent on such an announcement, including security assistance.”

Emerging from the testimony, Democratic congressman Adriano Espaillat tweeted that “what I heard today from #BillTaylor was very troubling and explosive.”

“At some point we’re going to have to conclude our investigation and go forward with what we have, and what we have is incredibly damning right now,” another Democratic legislator, Ted Lieu, said.

A new CNN/SSRS poll on Tuesday showed support for Trump’s removal from office is now 50 percent to 43 against.

However, reflecting the intensely partisan divide among voters, 87 percent of Democrats are pro-impeachment, compared to just six percent of Republicans.

Alomo Bitters loses $2m over border closure

0

Kasapreko Company Limited, manufacturer of Alomo Bitters, says it has lost about $2 million in revenue following the border closure by the Nigerian government.

This was made known in by Francis Holly Adzah, Kasapreko’s Head of International Business Development when he stated in an interview with a Ghanaian news website, JoyBusiness that they have lost about $2 million in revenue following the action of the Federal Government of Nigeria to close borders with neighbouring countries.

The beverage company according to the report was able to transport three trucks before the border closure. But now, the company has exhausted its products in the Nigerian market. “[We] managed to send in three trucks of products to the Nigerian market moments before the border was closed,” Adzah said.

Four other trucks loaded with products, one at the border and the others at the premises of the manufacturing company, have been left grounded due to the border closure by Nigeria, according to report. “In September, we lost $1 million to the closure. October is almost ended and our checks show a loss of another million dollars. The situation is getting out of hand and very serious,” Adzah said.

N120bn budgeted for the Army grossly inadequate -Monarch

A monarch in Osun state, Olowu of Kuta, Oba Adekunle Hammed Makama, Tegbosin 2, has said the N120billion budgeted for the Army for 2020 is “grossly inadequate.”

The statement made by the monarch, according to him, was in support of the earlier comment by the chairman of senate committee on the Army, Senator Ali Ndume, who reportedly said that the National Assembly will adjust the defense budget to meet security challenges.

In a statement by his media office, the monarch maintained that he has always canvassed for a better funding for the Nigerian Army in order to meet the challenges of fighting the asymmetric war.

Oba Makama in some occasions has canvassed for increasing funds in terms of procuring the modern equipment and also to boost the morale of the gallant troops.

He maintained that his priority as a Royal Father is to ensure secured and safe country,  insisting that that remains the condition precedent for economic prosperity. He said that no meaningful development can take place in an atmosphere of insecurity.

The monarch who also saluted the “courage and professionalism of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Tukur Buratai in the face of daunting task to contain the Boko Haram and  banditry in the North West”,  pleaded with politicians across board not to play politics with the Armed Forces being the symbol of our unity.

“As I have said before now, our troops need our individual and concerted support through prayers and positive comments from our religious leaders of both faith and all well-meaning patriotic Nigerians. A situation whereby their efforts are greeted with scornful remarks would naturally kill their morale and also incapacitate their spirit to fight and get desired results.

“We should all say ‘No’ to fake news emanating from some faceless rights organisations whose interest is not in alignment with that of Nigerian masses. These groups, which masquerade as concerned bodies, are perceived to be all out to do all they can to sustain the problem in a bid to satisfy their parochial interest.

“It must be stated that these groups cannot claim to love Nigeria more than Nigerians, and love their country more than they(Nigerians) do. So, it is high time we insulated our Armed Forces from external and their internal collaborators because Nigeria is greater than any of us.

“At this point, I will like to clamour for a massive increase in the budgetary allocation to the Defence ministry, this will enhance an accelerated equipping of our Armed Forces to meet up with the demand of modern day and conventional warfare.

“We hereby call on International community not to fold their hands and watch Nigerian face insurgency and counter terrorism alone. We have seen how they collectively rally round to defeat ISIS in Syria and Afghanistan. France can play a major role being the colonial master of most of the neighbouring countries around us.

“We have to realise that Nigeria belongs to all us, Nigeria is older than most of us, and Nigeria will still outlive most of us. The best we should individually and collectively do is to contribute our quotas in leaving Nigeria better than we met it,” he said.

Ndume in an interview with newsmen in Kaduna was quoted to have said that the allocation for the Armed Forces contained in the 2020 Budget proposal before the National Assembly was grossly inadequate in view of the current security challenges.
