No Visible Progress in Nigeria Under Tinubu – Ologbondiyan

0

Kola Ologbondiyan, a former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has said that claims of progress under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are absurd.
He said this on Wednesday during an appearance on Channels Television, in response to recent APC defections.
Ologbondiyan further said that the APC has produced a politically contentious climate, particularly under the current administration.

He stated, “It is regrettable that anyone would look at Nigeria today and claim progressive administration; it is absurd. What’s going on in Edo is comical.

“The Tinubu administration has demonstrated disturbing levels of political fluidity and division. The current political system is profoundly divided, with parties claiming full ownership of political space. This raises concerns about the potential for resistance.

The former spokesperson emphasized the growing national unhappiness, claiming that many Nigerians are merely suffering the current state of affairs while looking forward to the next election.

“If you test the mood of the nation, Nigerians are simply waiting for 2027. Some have even referred to the President as an OTP (One-Term President). In 2027, we must ensure that elections are free of errors that do not determine who will be president,” he said.

Speaking further, he voiced significant concern over the internal state of his party, claiming that the PDP cannot move forward under the current acting chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum.

“I will not deny that there is turbulence in the PDP. “As long as Ambassador Umar Damagum is acting chairman, the party will fail,” he asserted.

National Assembly Steps In to Reinstate Democratic Norms in Rivers

Speaking before the House of Representatives on Tuesday after its Easter and Sallah holiday, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas said that the National Assembly would form a committee to help restore democratic order in Rivers State.

Along with laying out a comprehensive legislative roadmap, Abbas called on members to recommit to national service and revolutionary reforms that would restore democracy, unity, and economic stability.

Abbas set the tone for the 10th Assembly’s crucial time by calling for targeted action on important national issues in his welcoming speech to MPs.

“We will collaborate with the Senate in the upcoming weeks to establish a high-level Committee on Reconciliation, which will include esteemed national leaders, in order to foster communication, advance peace, and aid in the restoration of democratic order in Rivers State and other areas afflicted by conflict.

He said, “Now is the time for purpose-driven legislation, for reaffirming our relationship with the people, and for strengthening democracy.”

A comprehensive legislative program that addressed issues such as electoral reform, constitutional revision, economic resilience, and climate adaptation was at the center of the speaker’s address.

Abbas emphasized how urgent it is to pass important legislation, especially those pertaining to jobs, education, healthcare, and security.

Recent achievements, such as the enactment of tax reform legislation intended to increase compliance and encourage investment, were highlighted by him.

These show the House’s commitment to promoting responsible economic governance, he said.

He cited recent Nigerian negotiations with the IMF as additional proof that strategic legislative supervision must be combined with fiscal restraint, saying, “We are shaping a future where policy reforms support national development and inclusivity.”

His comments focused largely on bringing stability to the nation’s problematic regions, particularly Rivers State.

Abbas revealed that a 21-member Ad-Hoc Committee, headed by the House Leader, is actively involving interested parties in order to oversee the interim administration and avoid a political void.

To modernize parliamentary interaction, Speaker Abbas launched the New Media Exchange program.

Digital channels are being adopted by the House, he said, in order to reach younger Nigerians and transform legislative transparency.

According to him, “online leaders and digital influencers have emerged as important opinion shapers—we must meet the people where they are.”

Although he was hopeful about reforms, Abbas acknowledged violent attacks over the recess, which struck a gloomy note. The tragic events, he said, from the catastrophic bombing in Gamboru to the communal violence in Benue and Plateau, highlight the necessity of strong security legislation.

Promo
He offered sympathies to the families of those affected by the attacks and stated, “The House stands united in condemning these attacks and calls on security agencies to intensify efforts to restore peace.”

As severe flooding is predicted to occur in more than 30 states, the speaker called for a proactive response.

On climate resilience and disaster preparedness frameworks, he instructed pertinent committees to engage with the executive.

A number of public activities to commemorate the second anniversary of the 10th Assembly were also preview by Abbas. From a House Open Week in July to a Public Policy Dialogue in Abuja, the events aim to close the divide between the public and legislators.

He emphasized that these ceremonies serve as forums to reaffirm our legislative objectives and accountability to the public, not merely to celebrate.

In his closing remarks, Abbas urged his colleagues to work together and be united as the House moves into a crucial stage of its four-year mandate.

This coming week is crucial. He implored, “Let us pledge to uphold the principles that make us the People’s House.”

A committee consisting of eighteen members was established by the Senate on Tuesday to supervise the actions of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, the sole administrator of Rivers State (rtd.).

Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President, revealed this when plenary reconvened on Tuesday.

The committee was established to improve accountability and openness in the state’s governance, according to Akpabio.

The Senate Lead Opeyemi Bamidele was appointed as the committee’s chairperson by Akpabio.

He emphasized how crucial the committee’s job was in guaranteeing efficient legislative supervision in Rivers State, underscoring the significance of its mandate.

Additionally, Akpabio made a suggestion that after more consultations, the committee’s makeup might be modified.

Senators Adamu Aliero, Osita Izunaso, Osita Ngwu, Kaka Shehu, Aminu Abass, Tokunbo Abiru, Adeniyi Adebire, Sani Musa, Simon Lalong, Asuquo Ekpeyong, Adams Oshiomhole, Ireti Kingibe, Onyekachi, Idiat Adebule, Ide Dafinone, and Mohammed—as well as the Senate Clerk—are among the other members of the committee.

Emphasizing the gravity of their mission, the Senate President instructed the committee to begin its oversight responsibilities immediately.

He also restated the Senate’s resolve to protect Rivers State’s democratic procedures.

Mass Failure in UTME Proves System Is Working as Intended – Minister

Tunji Alausa, the minister of education, has claimed that the high number of failed students in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is a result of the government’s anti-malpractice initiatives, which are having an impact, particularly in the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board system.
More than 1.5 million applicants received scores below the 200-mark cutoff point, which is frequently used by Nigerian universities for admission consideration, according to a thorough statistical report of the 2025 UTME results that was formally released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Monday.

A breakdown of the 1,955,069 results that were processed and made public on Monday shows that just 420,415 candidates received scores higher than 200.
Speaking Tuesday on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, Alausa said that the performance dip was a direct result of JAMB’s stricter security measures, which have led to a notable decrease in exam misconduct.

That’s a serious worry, because it reflects how well exams are administered, he said. A computer-based testing system is used by JAMB to administer its exams. Since they have put in place robust security measures, fraud and cheating have been totally eradicated. Regretfully, we are unable to say the same about NECO and WAEC.

Alausa also declared that by November 2025, the National Examinations Council and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) will start using computer-based exams, beginning with objective examinations.

He asserts that exam fraud discourages hardworking students and that the ministry is still dedicated to restoring the legitimacy of Nigeria’s admissions and assessment procedures through the use of technology-driven solutions.

“By the May/June 2026 exam cycle, the entire CBT model—including essay sections—will be implemented,” he continued.

“To combat this scam, we must deploy technology. The sheer number of “miracle centers” is intolerable. After cheating on the WAEC and NECO exams, some attempt to cheat on the JAMB, which is almost impossible to do. That is the discrepancy that we are currently witnessing. It is disheartening.

“The worst thing about cheating is that it discourages those who put in the most effort.” Do you think I’ll put in the necessary study time if I’m getting ready for WAEC or NECO and I know some of my classmates already have access to the questions? No, I could be tempted to go with them. Good students become corrupted in this way, and we need to stop it.

Tinubu’s Aide: Kwankwaso Has Lost Kano Grip, Now Eyeing APC for Survival

The political significance of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in Kano State politics has been disregarded by Yusuf Ata, the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development.
In order to stay relevant, Ata claims Kwankwaso is attempting to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) since he is no longer a desirable politician.
When the Minister visited APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje at the party’s national secretariat on Tuesday in Abuja, it was claimed that he made this statement as a courtesy call.

Kwankwaso’s authority in Kano has diminished considerably, he said, and the red caps that stand for his “Kwankwasiyya” movement have all abandoned him.

“Kwankwaso has ceased operations in Kano. The only reason he is wanting to join the APC is to survive. Everybody has their grassroots records, including the president. He is no longer a desirable alternative, Ata declared.

Adding that the APC does not require Kwankwaso’s influence to win Kano’s 2027 presidential election for Bola Tinubu, he cautioned that the former governor’s return would cause internal strife inside the party.

Ata responded to rumors that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf would follow Kwankwaso to any political event by saying he would not personally welcome the former governor back into the APC until Ganduje had instructed him to do so.

I was a member of the House of Assembly during Kwankwaso’s tenure as governor in 1999. He is someone I know well. He stated, “We have no deal unless our father [Ganduje] decides to accommodate him.”

During the visit, Ganduje spoke more tactfully, stating that Kwankwaso would be welcomed if he chose to join the APC.

He did concur with Ata, though, that Tinubu may win Kano in 2027 without Kwankwaso’s help.

Kwankwaso, according to the APC leader, is “a stranded politician.”

This is exactly what happens when a fish runs out of water. The fish must find a means to enter the water if it is drying out instead. Thus, that is the situation.

We’re not ready to welcome him, I won’t say that. I believe it is morally correct to make accommodations for your son when you see him running to a place where he would find refuge and you are the older brother in a large household. Ganduje remarked, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.”

U.S. President Trump Introduces Two New Federal Holidays

0

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has decreed that Americans will henceforth mark two extra national holidays.
It was alleged that Trump made the remark in a post on his Truth Social platform late Monday.
The American President proclaimed November 11 and May 8 as national holidays remembering the end of World War I and World War II, respectively and the country’s successes during the wars.

He, however, underlined that the holidays would not involve time off work for federal employees.

In a post on his Truth Social platform late Monday, the president announced November 11 and May 8 national holidays to commemorate the end of World Wars I and II, respectively.

“We won two world wars, but we never took credit for them; everyone else did! “All over the world, the Allies are commemorating the victory we achieved in WWII,” Trump wrote.

He questioned what he saw as a lack of national credit for these historic military achievements.

“The only country that doesn’t celebrate the World War I and World War II is the U.S.,” asserted the historian. While underlining that the announcement would not require employees to take time off work.

“We will not be closing the country for these two very important Holidays, November 11 and May 8,” a spokesperson stated.

The White House has yet to publish an official proclamation or provide details on how the holidays would be recognized at the governmental level, and it remains to be seen what legislative action will be taken to support the President’s statement.

Senate Queries NNPC, Other Bodies Over Federal Character Infractions

On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, the Nigerian Senate will begin investigation hearings into the alleged misuse and poor application of the federal character concept by important government institutions. This will be a fresh attempt to promote equity in hiring the public and allocating infrastructure.

Under the direction of Senator Allwell Heacho Onyesoh (Rivers East), the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs is conducting the hearings, which will be held in the Equal Opportunities Hearing Room 211 in the Senate Building at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

The Senate unanimously approved a motion introduced by Senator Osita Ngwu (Enugu West) in March, which prompted this action. The motion, which was headed Urgent Need to Address Systemic Abuse and Ineffective Implementation of the Federal Character Principle, denounced what it said was widespread disregard for the 1999 Constitution’s (as modified) Sections 14(3) and 14(4).

A “flagrant disregard” for the federal character standards, which are meant to guarantee fair representation of all regions and groups in national appointments and infrastructure projects, has been alleged against a number of federal agencies.

Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and its affiliates, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the National Pension Commission (PENCOM), and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) are a few of the organizations listed.

Other organizations include the Nigeria Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), the Solid Minerals Development Fund (SMDF), the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), the National Library of Nigeria (NLN), and others.

On Tuesday, May 6, Senator Onyesoh confirmed in a statement that all designated Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) had received formal invitations and requests for documentation. The Committee plans to present its findings to the Senate in three months, and the hearings are anticipated to take several weeks.

In order to demonstrate its commitment to conducting an open and inclusive investigation, the Committee has also invited members of the public to submit memoranda or pertinent information there or by email to clerk.scfciga.ng@gmail.com.

At a time when concerns about imbalance and marginalization in federal appointments are growing, the hearings are anticipated to put the government’s adherence to the constitutional values of justice and national unity to the test.

VeryDarkman Secures Bail as EFCC Investigates Financial Allegations

As VeryDarkMan, the EFCC has granted administrative bail.
While arguing over a dubious loan deduction from his mother’s account—which she apparently did not request for—VDM was taken into custody at an Abuja GTBank branch.
During VDM’s arrest, security guards reportedly physically abused him and blindfolded him.

VeryDarkMan (VDM), a social media activist, has been granted administrative bail, according to confirmation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Over the weekend, VDM was taken into custody at an Abuja GTBank branch. He had allegedly gone to the bank to contest a dubious loan deduction from his mother’s account, a loan for which she had never submitted an application.

According to reports, security guards physically abused him and blindfolded him while making the arrest.

His arrest caused a great deal of worry, with many claiming that prominent people influenced the EFCC’s decision to detain him as payback for his vocal social media presence.

According to a statement released by the EFCC on Tuesday, Otse was arrested in relation to “severe allegations of financial malfeasance.” The agency clarified that they were able to hold him for longer than the first 24 hours allowed by law since they had received multiple petitions and had since secured a lawful remand order.

The EFCC acknowledged that he has been offered administrative bail and will be released after fulfilling the requirements, even though he is still being held.

Like any other suspect under investigation, Otse may be lawfully detained by the EFCC. In this regard, the proper Remand Order was acquired. Administrative bail has been offered to him, and he will be released once he complies with all requirements.

“The commission is grateful that Nigerians are interested in its work. We encourage the fervor, excitement, and ferocious responses to all of its events.

Nevertheless, it should stop making assumptions about why it is performing its duty. The EFCC should be able to carry out its duties without fear or favor. Charges will be brought as soon as investigations are complete,” the statement said.

Additionally, the agency clarified that Otse’s arrest was the result of his failure to reply to many official invitations given to him using his known addresses and contact channels.

The EFCC emphasized that the allegations pertain to significant financial malfeasance, which is within its purview as part of its primary objective to combat financial and economic crimes.

Pressure for his release has increased since the arrest, both domestically and internationally.

See the following remarks:

@Edesiri 56: You battle against those who oppose corruption, not corruption itself. One of the issues Nigeria faces, along with the government, is you people. How can such a nation advance when there are bad leaders everywhere with positions in Nigerian law?

@yopy30BG: It is clear that you people have nothing against him; you were simply unsure of what to say to the public. Now, have a look at what you came up with. YOU ARE ALL SHAMEFUL. [@KestyDeveloper]: Financial fraud and cyberstalking—like farin una dey do self? Do you people even comprehend how your dramas appear on the outside? @iam_Drelex: Was Yahaya Bello imprisoned for refusing to honor the invitation? I think he is still free to roam the streets.

The @1blackoracle But what about those who are still at large after committing serious financial crimes against the nation?

Super Falcons to face Cameroon in pre-WAFCON 2024 friendly

0

In an international friendly later this month, Nigeria’s Super Falcons will play the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in preparation for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The match is anticipated to provide both sides with a useful chance to hone their tactics in advance of the esteemed continental competition.

After their most recent game, an international friendly against France in December 2023, the Super Falcons are still preparing under head coach Justine Madugu. It was a hard-fought match, and the Nigerian team narrowly lost 2-1 to Les Bleues despite a solid showing. In the upcoming months, the team’s strategy is anticipated to be influenced by the lessons learned during that match, which was a critical test of their preparedness.

Nigeria is preparing for WAFCON 2024 with a number of practice matches, including this one versus Cameroon. For the team to be at its best before the competition begins, more friendly games are anticipated in the upcoming weeks.

With nine championships, Nigeria is the most successful team in the competition’s history and has been assigned to Group B. They will compete in a group stage that includes matches against Algeria, Tunisia, and Botswana. The Super Falcons want to take back the WAFCON championship and establish themselves as the dominant team on the African continent once more.

Fans throughout Nigeria and the continent will be closely observing the Super Falcons as they get ready to proudly and resolutely represent the country once more. The team is expected to rise to the occasion and leave a lasting impression at WAFCON 2024, thanks to a blend of seasoned players and up-and-coming talent.

We Are Livid At Such An Inhuman Decision – FCT Doctors Embark On Warning Strike, Gives Wike Ultimatum

0

The Association of Resident Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has declared the beginning of a three-day warning strike on Tuesday, May 6.
The doctors made the decision following their emergency congress meeting on Monday at Asokoro District Hospital in Abuja.
Following the meeting, Dr. George Ebong, president of FCT ARD, stated that the strike was required as a result of the FCT Civil Service Commission’s arbitrary dismissal of 127 health workers last Friday.

He described the dismissal as harsh and illegal, requesting their immediate reinstatement and restoration of their April earnings.

He also demanded that Emeka Ezeh, the chairman of the FCT-CSC, step down immediately.

Ebong claimed that if their demands were not granted by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and the FCT Administration within three days, they will go on indefinite strike and close the nation’s capital hospitals.

“We are going on a three-day warning strike since the majority of our members were removed from duty on Friday without due process. They were branded as ghost workers, ex-employees, and absconders, despite the fact that these colleagues are still working in the system today.

“We are furious that the FCTA service commission will make such an inhumane judgment without consulting the health management board, permanent secretary of health, association of resident doctors, or Medical & Dental Consultant Association of Nigeria, MDCAN. Nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory scientists are also affected, in addition to doctors.

“The hospitals’ managing directors are unaware. In reality, three MDs are impacted.

“127 health personnel are impacted. If these are ghost workers, how do these hospitals run? The hospitals would have crumbled. What is the staffing capacity of FCT hospitals?

“The impacted health workers’ salaries were terminated without prior notice. The last month’s salary. This is a clear case of insensitivity and injustice to healthcare personnel.

“We want prompt salary payments for all affected health professionals.

“A letter of apology to the affected health-care personnel.

“Mr. Emeka Ezeh, chairman of the service commission, resigns immediately.

“It is a three-day warning starting from tomorrow, Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at 8 am, and if within the space of three days (which is Friday, May 9, 2025), our demands are not met, we will go on an indefinite strike after an appraisal,” said the worker.
