Senate approves President Buhari’s request to borrow $22.7 billion

0

The upper legislative chamber okayed the request on Thursday amid objections from some senators.

While the matter was being debated, Enyinnaya Abaribe, minority leader, warned against considering all the recommendations on the loan at once.
He suggested that it should be done “item by item”, but Senate President Ahmad Lawan disagreed with him.

Subsequent debate on the matter forced the senate into an executive session during which it agreed to approve the request.
Buhari sent the loan request to the senate in 2019 though it was rejected by the previous senate under Bukola Saraki.

A misguided attempt by some criminal Boko Haram elements to attack the troops of 25 Task Force Brigade (Army Super Camp 2) located in Damboa LGA of Borno State has met a crushing defeat in the hands of the resilient troops.

CACHE OF ARMS AND AMMUNITION CAPTURED FROM THE CRIMINAL INSURGENTS BY TROOPS OF 25 TASK FORCE BRIGADE (ARMY SUPER CAMP 2) LOCATED IN DAMBOA LGA OF BORNO STATE AFTER AN ENCOUNTER AT DAMBOA ON 4 MARCH 2020.

In a statement, Media Coordinator, Nigerian Army Operations Centre, Col Aminu Iliyasu said the marauding criminals mounted on Gun Trucks and with a number of their foot soldiers attempted to infiltrate the troops’ location from three different fronts in the early hours of 4 March 2020. The troops responded swiftly, bringing to bear superior fire power against the criminals in conjunction with the Air Task Force Operation LAFIYA DOLE.

The encounter which lasted over an hour witnessed one of the most debilitating defeats of the Boko Haram criminals in a single encounter since the turn of the year. So far, 19 Boko Haram criminals’ corpses have been recovered while many more were observed escaping with various degrees of gunshot wounds by the troops who are on vigorous exploitation of their initial success along the criminals’ withdrawal route.

Interestingly, the gallant troops captured from the Boko Haram criminals 5 AK 47 Rifles, one General Purpose Machine Gun and one Rocket Propelled Gun tube. Regrettably, 3 valiant soldiers paid the supreme prize while 4 others were wounded in action. However, the wounded in action soldiers have been evacuated to a military medical facility for immediate and effective management.

Reacting to the development, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai hereby congratulates the troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE for their decisive victory against the enemies of our country.

He further reassures the residents of Damboa and indeed the North East at large of the unflinching resolve of troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE in protecting the lives and properties of all law – abiding citizens.

Media Professionals Team Up to Tackle Fake News

0

Recognising the dangerous threat fake news pose to any society, and as one of the biggest challenges in the communication industry  threatening the authenticity of real news, communication scholars and media professionals have come together to identify means of ending the ugly trend.

The infiltration of fake news appears to be the fastest growing menace in the communication industry. The purveyors of hoax news don’t seem to be perturbed by the level of damage or the implications of their reports on the people involved and society at large.

The spread of fake news is likened to a virus intruding and destroying every fabric of the society, rendering havoc on the nation’s political, economic, tribal, religious and other aspects that make up a society. Its consequences are felt by the high and the low; its dangerous trend has tainted the image of the mighty and weak.  As the powerful lament the harmful effects of fake news on their lives, so were the downtrodden.  As the leaders and those in the position of authority are debunking fake news so also are the led and voiceless raising the alarm over deliberate use of their pictures and names for what they know absolutely nothing about.

Hence, February 21, 2020, the tempo of activities at the University of Ilorin Auditorium was unusually high for the 2020 edition of the Students-Veteran Interaction, an annual event where media professionals, scholars and other experts usually discuss trend in the communication industry with undergraduates.  It is an event where the field is literarily brought to the classroom and campus to enable students to create a nexus between the gown and town.

It was day many students had been waiting for. Lecturers, students from other departments, faculties and from other institutions have also been watching out for what the experts had gotten to say on the challenges of new media in the communication industry. They were also eager to explore new opportunities the new media could offer which are yet to be explored effectively.

To discuss the issues, media professionals from print, broadcast and Public Relations genres were carefully selected to speak on the theme of the event entitled: “Challenges of New media in the communication Industry.” The speakers were: Muritala Ayinla of the New Telegraph, Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television and Mr Emannuel of Nwachkwu of PR Redline.

Speaking on the danger of new media and its negative impacts in the communication industry, Muritala Ayinla said that despite the gains of new media and how it has revolutionised journalism, the ills of technological advancement are threatening the profession and society at large.

According to him, journalism globally is threatened today by the invasion of untrained and quacks that frequently engage in concocting and fabricating lies and present them in news format to the public using social media. He described fake news as a modified system of propaganda, which has metamorphosed into falsehood, describing those who engage in this act as information traffickers. “The advent of technology-induced fake news has tiptoed into all kinds of reports ranging from politics, business and other sectors causing confusion, condemnation, commendation as well as leading to hatred and wanton killing of innocent souls.

To tackle the scourge, Ayinla said: “The best way to deal with the problem is for trained journalists to dominate the social media with timely dissemination of factual account of events, fact-checking of every bit of information at their disposal before publishing or spreading such information.”

On his part, Mr. Nwachukwu of PR Redline tasked students to embrace positive use of the new media instead of just posing pictures or engaging in other mundane activities on it.

According to him, new media is an avenue to develop their skills and add value to themselves instead of being a passive participant.  He likened the new media to a market where all manner of distractions take place, adding that to actively use the technology, one must focus on the goal one intends to achieve.

Corroborating the speakers, a deputy bursar at the University, Mr Oba Abdulbarki charged the student to place passion above money and ensure ethics of the profession are upheld at all times, adding that every other thing will certainly come their way with ease. He added that it is always honourable and dignifying to make money through honest means rather than embarking on illicit means in the name of getting rich quickly.

On his part, the Head of Mass Communication Department, Dr Mustapha Kayode Lambe explained that essence of the students-veteran interaction, which is first of its kind in any school of communications studies, was to sensitise the students on what obtains after the classroom as well as enabling them to make informed decisions on what aspect of Mass Communication they want to specialise.

Dr Mustapha said the university has made free Wi-Fi available for students to enable them to carry out research and add value to themselves, adding that the department would continue to trail blaze innovations that will distinguish its graduates from other universities in Nigeria and globally.

Other communication scholars and professionals at the event were Associate Professor, Dr. A.L Azeez, the Deputy Dean, Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, Dr Patrick Udende; Dr. Saudat Abdulbaqi, Dr. Rasak Adisa, Dr. Oba La’aro, Dr. Abdulgafar Arikewuyo, Mrs Maryam Mustapha-Lambe and other academic and non-academic staff of the university.

Damboa Attack: Zulum Hails Military for Decisive Blow on Boko Haram

… Scores of insurgents killed,19 fighter vehicles seized

… ‘Taking the war to fleeing insurgents impressive

Borno Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has applauded the Nigerian military’s ground and air components for what he described as “decisive blow against Boko Haram” in the early hours of Wednesday, even when the insurgents ambushed from different directions in attempt to overrun Damboa town in southern part of the state.

Zulum said in a statement, he personally signed, ‎that he was particularly impressed that a combined team of soldiers of the army fighting on the ground and air, using fighter jets with the complementary efforts of the civilian JTF and vigilantes, not only killed scores of insurgents to prevent them from gaining grounds, but went the gallant step of taking the war to the insurgents even after they had fled.

“‎I find it compelling to salute our gallant soldiers of the Nigerian Army and Air Force, under operation Lafiya Dole for a decisive blow against Boko Haram insurgents on Wednesday morning in Damboa town. At about 6am yesterday, squads of the insurgents cleverly attacked Damboa from different directions, believing their ambush was going to succeed in overunning the town. Unfortunately for the insurgents, they met a far more determined and battle ready military. Soldiers of the army fought from the ground, the Air force quickly deployed fighter jets while volunteers in the Civilian JTF and Vigilantes complemented them.

At first stage, destroyed 13 fighting vehicles after killing scores of insurgents, who drove on them. What I find even more impressive, was that after the insurgents retreated due to defeat, the military did not stay back, they remobilized and took the war to the fleeing insurgents and in the process, killed more insurgents and destroyed six more fighting vehicles, bringing to 19, the number of vehicles destroyed. The insurgents were deprived of and we know what one vehicle used for fighting means to the Boko Haram, talk more of 19.

I salute our ground and air forces. I salute our volunteers who supported the military. I salute two volunteers, one each of the Civilian JTF and Vigilantes who paid the supreme price in trying to defend Borno and Nigeria. I commiserate with families of two women who died from stray bullets and wish those who sustained injuries a speedy recovery. I assure the people of Borno State that so much is being put in place in combined and very resolute effort, to bring an end to the Boko Haram insurgency. By the power of God, the insurgency will eventually end and we shall regain our enduring peace and prosperity” Zulum said in the statement.

Jubilation as Congo discharges last Ebola patient

0

The last Ebola patient being treated in the Democratic Republic of Congo went home from a treatment center on Tuesday, according to the World Health Organization, a significant step in the countdown to declaring an end to the world’s second-deadliest outbreak of the disease.

The woman was released from the center in Beni town, one of the hotspots of the recent outbreak, which began August 2018, the agency said in a statement.
On Tuesday, WHO Africa region tweeted a video of health care workers singing and dancing with the patient as many gathered at the center to celebrate her release from the hospital.
It added that 46 people who had come in contact with the patient are still being monitored for Ebola symptoms. While praising the “tireless efforts” of agencies in the the fight to tackle the outbreak,WHO regional director for Africa Dr. Matshidiso Moeti called for caution and vigilance.
“It is not yet the end of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We must stay vigilant in the coming weeks and beyond,” Dr. Moeti said in the statement.
The WHO estimates that 2,226 people were killed in the current outbreak in Congo — its tenth since the virus was discovered in 1976.
The 20-months-long outbreak was worsened by armed conflict and violence in Congo’s North Kivu and Ituri provinces in which health workers died.
At least 11, 300 people were killed in the largest Ebola outbreak in West Africa between 2014 and 2016.
In February, four countries in Africa: the Democratic Republic of Congo; Burundi; Ghana and Zambia licensed an Ebola vaccine. More countries will be added to the list, the WHO said.

Revealed: How INGOs, staff embezzle billions of dollars meant for northeast IDPs

0

The activities of some International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs) operating in North-East Nigeria have once again come under the radar with regards to their true motives in the carrying out of humanitarian activities.

In many quarters, it has been stated that the presence of various INGOs in North-East Nigeria is one of the reasons why the war against terrorism in Nigeria is still on. It was also alleged that these INGOs have been providing logistics support to the Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorist group, as well as carrying out espionage activities that undermine the efforts of the Nigerian Military in the fight against terrorism.

This medium commissioned an investigative report on the activities of the INGOs in North-East Nigeria and presented the following revelations that were gathered from the field.

The Number of INGOs in North-East Nigeria:

It was revealed that between 2017 to date, there been an astronomical increase in the number of INGOs that registered to carryout humanitarian services in North-East Nigeria. A total number of 150 INGOs indicated an interest in operating in North-East Nigeria and from the number; over 80% are of French origin.

This astronomical rise was experienced when the Nigerian Military sacked Camp Zero, the operational headquarters of Boko Haram, in December of 2016. The bulk of the INGOs indicated they were carrying out humanitarian services for victims of the Boko Haram war, especially those domiciled in liberated communities and local government areas.

How the Military Goofed:

Credible sources in the know of things stated that the Nigerian Military thought that with the coming of INGOs, the task of rebuilding the war-torn communities would be made more manageable, and resettlement of displaced people would not take a more extended period with the help of the INGOs.

A source confided in this medium that the Military made a costly mistake by believing in the genuineness of the INGOs in operation in North-East Nigeria.

“The Nigerian Military allowed the influx of INGOs because they wanted speedy resettlement of displaced persons back their communities. They didn’t know that the majority of the INGOs have ulterior motives. The reality struck when some of them started taking up hotel spaces for upwards of ten years.”

“The INGOs took up all available hotel spaces in Maiduguri, the state capital, and you rarely find them in the liberated communities where they indicated they would be carrying out humanitarian services.”

Another source stated that the Nigerian Military immediately understood the game plan but was too engaged in the war to scrutinize the activities of the INGOs, and such they continued to grow in numbers and influence.

“ It was a daunting task the Nigerian Military had at hand, and this was what the INGOs capitalized on and entrenched themselves in the system.”

The Siphoning of Funds from Donor Agencies:

It was also revealed that most of the INGOs in operation in North-East Nigeria were in the habit of converting donor funds meant for humanitarian services. They have adopted a model that ensures that these funds continue to trickle by staging movies like scenes with women and children.

This medium was able to establish the fact that the bulk of the funds received by the INGOs in the North East were converted to private concerns. The foreign staffers of these organizations spend the bulk of their time in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, where they frequent choicest night clubs and hotels.

A staff of one of the INGOs in operation in North-East Nigeria who pleaded anonymity described the activities of the INGOs as the height of fraud as they have been using Nigeria to defraud donor agencies.

“The expatriate workers do not allow us to attend meetings where crucial decisions are taken as regards to providing humanitarian services. Whenever we make recommendations on the plight of those in IDP camps, they always turn down the request due to a lack of funds. But the next day, they would all fly business class to Lagos for night parties with choice whiskeys and wines.”

“They hardly stay in Maiduguri. There is a particular director that orders his food and drinks from Abuja. Since the past two years, he has been in Nigeria; he hasn’t spent the weekend in Borno State.”

Another source in one of the IDP camps stated that the INGOs are indeed fleecing Nigerians and the international communities with their nefarious activities. He noted that the quantum of monies received from donor agencies is enough to tackle the humanitarian crisis in North-East Nigeria if put to good use.
This medium was able to scrutinize the books of three INGOs, and it was realized that over $200 million have come in as foreign aids to these organizations alone, but there is nothing to show for it.

It was realized that the INGOs usually stage humanitarian crisis in IDP camps and send such clips to donor agencies who in turn release funds for humanitarian interventions that eventually ends up in private pockets.

This medium witnessed one of such displays, and when our reporter inquired further as to why the women and children are being recorded, the officials of the organization stated that it was a psychological exercise designed to give them some mental relief from the trauma of war.”

Our reporter later identified that those clips are packaged as real-life situations and used as materials for soliciting for funds from donor agencies.

The Lack of Accountability and Transparency:

Another issue identified was the apparent lack of transparency and accountability in the management of funds means for humanitarian interventions. A banker with one of the banks frequently used by most of the INGOs stated that once funds come in, the way and manner it is disbursed reeks of a regime of absolute financial recklessness.

He stated that the bulk of the expatriate workers pay themselves frivolous allowances under various sub-heads. “Whenever we receive funds, in less than 24 hours, the account is depleted with transfers to individual accounts that are not on the payroll. “He further added that this trend is familiar with almost all the INGOs in the North East in the past three years.

This medium was able to identify that the most thriving business by Europeans in Africa now is running NGOs that collect money from people on the pretext that same will be used for the basic needs of victims of disasters. At the same time, the same goes for personal effects.
