The Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday sentenced a former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Olisa Metuh, to seven years imprisonment on corruption charges regarding his activities preceding the 2015 presidential election which his party lost.

Justice Okon Abang delivering judgment at the proceedings which lasted over six hours convicted Metuh on all the seven counts, including the fraudulent receipt of N400m  from the Office of the National Security Adviser in November 2014 and use of the money for political activities of the PDP and for his personal purposes.

The court also convicted Metuh for transacting with a cash sum of $2m without going through a financial institution.

The judge agreed with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission successfully proved that the transaction violated the anti-money laundering law which pegs the maximum cash transaction an individual undertakes outside a financial institution at N5m.

He imposed sentenced Metuh to seven years imprisonment for counts 1, 2, 4 and 7, five years imprisonment in respect of count 3, and three years in respect of counts 5 and 6.

He, however, ruled that the sentences shall run concurrently which implied that he would only spend the highest number of years of jail term, which is seven, in prison.

The judge also directed Metuh to pay a fine of N375m to the Federal Government.

‘He wants to be VP’, Arewa youths condemn El-Rufai over comments on zoning

The President General of Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) Yerima Shettima on Tuesday, condemned the comments by Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai where he espoused support for Southern presidency in 2023.

The Forum also accused Elrufai of working towards becoming the Vice President in 2023.
Shettima, who spoke exclusively with DAILY POST, made the remark while condemning the governor for saying the Southern part of Nigeria should be allowed to produce the country’s next president.

El-Rufai had said the North had no justification to hold onto power at the end of President Muhammadu Buhari’s second tenure in 2023.

The governor had insisted that the South should be allowed to produce the country’s next president in the interest of justice, equity and fairness.

However, Shettima stressed that the governor was only pursuing his selfish interest.

He maintained that El-Eufai’s comment was not in the interest of the North.

According to Shettima: “El-Rufai is just a governor and a mere politician who is ever ready to bargain for what he feels will represent his individual and personal interest.

“He is probably saying this because he wants them to consider him for Vice President and only God knows the side of the South he was referring to as he did not specify. But he may be saying this because he wants to be considered as a running mate to whoever will contest.”

The AYCF President General stressed that El-Rufai’s statement was not a reflection of the North.
He cautioned Nigerians against absorbing declarations of politicians without proper scrutiny.

Shettima added: “For us Northerners, he remains a governor, his decision does not in any way reflect the interest of the North even in Kaduna he won’t get one-third. His statement holds no water and it represents his personal interest.

“You know due to his character of desperation, he is ever ready to bargain and that is why if a politician comes out to make any statement look at it thoroughly you will realize that it’s his personal interest.”
He expressed the belief that the governor was going about justling for the position of the Vice President because he’s not popular in the North, even in Kaduna.

“He is probably going around behind the scenes now negotiating to be Vice President of the country considering the fact that he may not be the popular candidate from the North. If the North is to produce candidates for the presidency, El-Rufai is not among the first 10 we are considering. He has probably realized that his chances are slim and narrow so he is ever ready to negotiate and make it looks like he is more accepted in one part of the country so he is willing to go around side by side whoever emerges from the South.

“I can see his body language that whoever he thinks it’s going to work with is completely doomed so whoever he thinks will consider him to be Vice President is just wasting time and whatever he says does not represent the interest of Northerners and it can never be.

“What do you expect from a sinking boat who has lost the goodwill of his people can’t go for third term as governor, as a result, he is desperate to remain in political office, hence he is ever willing and ready to bargain against the collective interest of his people because he’s desperate to hold the political office of the vice president and unfortunately for him he is not that popular so whoever considers him as Vice President should know his picking a product that is not sellable in the North. El-Rufai is a sinking ship that can only fall anywhere just to survive.

Thabet, a former high-ranking military official, confirmed the family was still at the hospital and said the Egyptian presidential office would organise the funeral.

Mubarak was in power from 1981 until he was overthrown in 2011 amid the region’s Arab Spring protests.

Despite the political repression under his rule, he was considered far more tolerant than Egypt’s current ruler, Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, and allowed opposition political parties and news outlets.

Since his 2017 release from prison, he has led a fairly quiet life with his wife, Suzanne, and their two sons, Alaa and Gamal, who were both convicted on corruption charges but released after four years in prison.

S’Court: PDP members should take up rice farming – APC

0

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to take up rice farming “because they are jobless”.

The ruling party said this in reaction to PDP’s call on the supreme court to review its verdict on the presidential election.

Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate, had challenged the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari but he lost from the tribunal to the supreme court.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, Kola Ologbondiyan, spokesman of the opposition party also called on the apex court to review its decisions on Osun, Kano, Kaduna and Katsina states’ polls.

But in a statement, Lanre Issa-Onilu, his APC counterpart, said PDP’s request has turned it into a joke in the country’s political space.

Issa-Onilu said the opposition party has been exhibiting strange behaviours since it was rejected at the polls in 2015.

“The call by PDP asking the Supreme Court to review its rulings on the Presidential Election and governorship elections in Osun, Kano, Kaduna and Katsina States, has, once again, exposed the joke the opposition party has turned itself into in our nation’s political space,” he said.

“Never in the history of our democratic journey has a political party made a mockery of what a responsible opposition politics entails. The PDP’s call has once again, reinforced our party’s belief that the PDP has become a clog in the wheels of our country’s political evolution.

“We believe it has been difficult for some leaders of the PDP to cope for so long outside of power. There is obviously a lot of idleness at the Wadata House Secretariat of PDP.

“At this period that our government is working hard to ensure food sufficiency in the country, we urge those jobless characters at the Wadata House to seriously consider taking up rice farming. This would make them useful for our country.”

South East APC lauds El-Rufai on rotational presidency

0

South East leadership caucus of All Progressives Congress (APC) has commended Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai for identifying with the agitation for rotational presidency in the party for the 2023 election.

Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr. Osita Okechukwu, who conveyed the feelings of the zone in an interaction with The Guardian yesterday, noted that Governor El-Rufai’s position was a welcome development.

okechukwu remarked that although the governor did not specifically mention South-East or South-West in his position, “it was gladdening that a major political actor, a Buharist, foremost northerner and foundational member of APC is joining the agitation for the continuation of the rotation convention for the presidency from North to South.”

He said that El-Rufai’s pronouncement contrasts with issues raised by some prominent politicians that Ndigbo is not only missing in the mainstream, but also are agitating for secession, and therefore not a factor when the presidency is being discussed.
