Damboa: Former CP Tsav hails Buratai, Nigerian troops over gallant display against Boko Haram terrorists

Ex-Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, has commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai and his gallant troops for a display of sheer “gallantry and patriotism” against Boko/ISWAP terrorists.

According to Mr Tsav, the COAS has once again silenced his critics and proven beyond reasonable doubt that he is worthy of President Muhammadu Buhari’s trust and that of Nigerians despite the conspiracy.

Scores of insurgents lost their lives on Wednesday after the gallant troops repelled an attack in Damboa, a town 85 kilometres away from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

The Nigerian soldiers were unscathed from a five-hour gun duel which left dead bodies of the insurgents and their 19 abandoned trucks littered on the ground.

Being a security expert himself, Alhaji Tsav likened the Nigerian troops to its American counterparts with zero tolerance for terrorists.

He expressed pride in their consistent show of bravery and courage amidst distraction by paid critics behind beguile negative scripts.

Mr. Tsav added that this may not have been achieved without Lt. Gen Buratai’s focused leadership and tenacity, who he says has done enough to earn his respect and that of all Nigerians.

This victory, according to the ex-CP, however, is an indication that all the military need is encouragement and not disparagement from Nigerians.

Read full statement below:

I am compelled by the extraordinary gallantry and patriotism displayed by our patriotic troops in their recent encounter with the Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists to issue this public statement because of the excitement that overwhelmed me and countless Nigerians.

I wish to stress that Nigeria belongs to all of us. And when it borders on matters of national security, it is also our collective responsibility to encourage and support the efforts of FGN and our troops in securing our lives and property in any part of the country.

There is a deliberate malevolence and dampening scolding of President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR and Service Chiefs over alleged incompetence in handling the fresh spate of insecurities in the country. I sensed for a long time that it has assumed the tone of conspiracy by a select elite.

But contrary to such regressive thoughts, our Armed Forces are performing exceedingly marvelous on the warfront. And the cooked opinions they canvass is not what is really obtainable on the field of battle.

I was specifically elated with the strides of our combined troops, comprising the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force under the “Operation Lafiya Dole which recorded yesterday’s blistering victory (March 4, 2020) over Boko Haram criminals and ISWAP terrorists in Damboa, Borno state. A battalion of insurgents laid ambush on our troops and the natives, with the intention of overrunning the town.

But in a surprise bulwark of defence network mounted by our brave troops, the invading insurgents were pounded so mercilessly to the extent the survivors had to scamper for safety. The terrorists least expected this fatal fate.

News reports had it that several insurgents met their waterloo during the encounter and 19 of their warfare vehicles were also destroyed. It happened both during the fierce exchange of gun battles and their defeatist retreat after a hot chase by our ground and air forces.

As a security expert myself, I know, it was an excellent performance by our troops and a replica of what only American troops can do to terrorists. The military squad which conducted this highly successful and commendable operation deserves special hogs and a dinner from Nigerians.

Even Borno state Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum and the residents of Damboa were impressed. Zulum could no longer conceal his feelings, but gave a public salutation to the gallant soldiers of the Nigerian Army and the Air Force under operation Lafiya Dole for the decisive blow against the Boko Haram insurgents.

These are actions that should attract loud public commendations for our troops beginning with the National Assembly, State Governors, opposition parties, Nigerian elites, the media and the generality of Nigerians.

The focus of the people on the once in awhile crippling of our troops in the frontlines is a very unpatriotic act. There is nowhere in the world where the citizens only delight in celebrating the victories of enemy forces against their Armies in battle or country.

Even before the repelling of insurgents at Damboa, Nigerian troops performed a similar feat at Jiddari Polo General Area located at the Southern part of Maiduguri metropolis. The same day President Buhari paid a condolence visit to Borno over the Boko Haram attack in Auno village, the insurgents regrouped and stealthily launched an attack on Jaddiri Polo General Area.

The intention was to disgrace Mr. President, challenge and mock the competence and capacity of our troops. But our brave troops proved them wrong by repelling the attack and securing the community. And to my knowledge, since 2019 when insurgency was animated again, our troops have gone to extra miles to secure communities in the North East and Nigeria so many times.

With every sense of responsibility, I commend the Nigerian Army and the troops fighting Boko Haram in the North East. They have always made us proud as a nation and should never be distracted by paid critics, who themselves feel comfortable wherever they are resident to craft the beguile negative scripts because of the security some of your colleagues’ have even paid the supreme price so that we can live in peace.

Most profoundly, I salute the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen TY Buratai for his focused leadership and tenacity. He has proven to Nigerians innumerable times that Nigeria’s problem with insurgency is not beyond him and the competence of the Nigerian Army. He has proved it enough to earn my respect and that of all Nigerians.

It is our divine obligation as Nigerians to always suckle the confidence we have collectively reposed in the competence and capacity of Lt. Gen TY Buratai. He has not failed to demonstrate that we will not only win the war, but expose and put the enemies of Nigeria to shame.

And I buttress this point with all seriousness from the confidence the latest Damboa Boko Haram incident has rekindled in me. Like the 2016 demolishing of the dreaded Sambisa forest, both have symbolized for our country a foretold success in the counter-insurgency operations. Nigerians should think of this!

We imagine that the residues of terrorists had mobilized all their fleeing forces together to fight the troops and wreak havoc on the innocent people in the town of Damboa to mock our country. But unexpectedly, the insurgents were embarrassed and violently pushed back by the Nigerian troops. They met a mightier force in our troops, at a time some Nigerians dismissed them as non-performers on the warfront.

It’s a sign of what we all stand to gain if we remain unflinchingly committed and united behind our military. It is just the only part we are obligated to play and there will be no force too strong for us to defeat.

I thank and appreciate all Nigerians and very hopeful, that with passage of time soonest, our country shall be free of any trace of terrorism.

Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire,  has revealed that two out of the three suspected cases of coronavirus tested negative for the disease.

Ehanire also noted the result of the third suspected case is still being awaited.

Lagos commissioner of health, Akin Abayomi, had on Thursday, disclosed that three patients, who returned from abroad, had been put in isolation for procedural checks.

Speaking at a news conference in Abuja on Friday, the minister asked citizens not to profile foreign nationals over fears of the virus.

“As of the three cases, one of them, we are expecting the result; it takes some hours for the results to come out,” he said.

”We must go away from the idea of focusing on Chinese or any particular nationality because a case that entered Nigeria, which is the index case is not Chinese.

“People should maintain good social distance. We have already strengthened the screening of every passenger that enters this country.”

Nigeria recorded its first case on February 26. The index case is an Italian who came into the country for business.

So far, this is the only case of coronavirus in the country.

The disease, which broke out in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, is taking a toll on countries globally.

Vatican City confirms first case of coronavirus

Vatican City has confirmed its first case of coronavirus, a Vatican spokesman said Friday.

All outpatient services in Vatican City State’s Health and Hygiene Department were suspended March 6 to allow for the sanitation of Vatican facilities after one patient tested positive the previous day.

“The Health and Hygiene Department is taking steps to inform the competent Italian authorities and in the meantime the planned health protocols have been launched,” Holy See Press Office Director Matteo Bruni told journalists March 6.

The Vatican spokesman did not elaborate what these additional protocols will be. Many upcoming Vatican conferences and events have already been postponed until the fall to help combat the virus’ spread.

With 148 coronavirus-related deaths in less than two weeks — more than 96 of which have occured in the past three days —  Italy has had the most Covid-19 mortalities outside of China.

Most of the 3,858 people who have contracted Covid-19 in Italy have been in the northern regions of the country. The Italian Ministry of Health reported 44 confirmed cases in Rome’s Lazio region on the evening of March 5.

The Italian government has closed all schools and universities March 5-15 in response to the outbreak.

After the pope canceled several appearances last week, the Vatican issued a statement March 3 that the pope had “a common cold,” and that he did not have “symptoms caused by other diseases.” According to an Italian newspaper, Pope Francis was reportedly tested for the novel coronavirus, Covid-19, with negative results.

Hand sanitizer dispensers were installed in Vatican City offices last week, and there has been a nurse and a doctor on call at a Vatican clinic to give immediate assistance, according to the Holy See Press Office.

The Diocese of Rome has also canceled all non-liturgical parish events through March 15.

St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican museums remain open to visitors. Rome has experienced a 90% decline in visitors since the outbreak in Italy, according to local media.

Covid-19 is a new strain of coronavirus, which can cause fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. In some cases, it can lead to pneumonia, kidney failure, and severe acute respiratory syndrome.

At least 414 people have recovered from Covid-19 in Italy, the Italian Ministry of Health reported March 5.

The Catholic charity Caritas and the community of Sant’Egidio have been working to help prevent the spread of the virus among the poor and homeless that they serve.

Caritas Milan has been checking the temperature of all who enter their homeless shelters and soup kitchens.

Sant’Egidio said that they have been extending their outreach to the elderly in Italy by delivering food and medicine and staying in touch with those in isolation.

Italy has the oldest population in the world after Japan; more than 23% of Italy’s population is 65 years old or older in 2020.

“If the infection will spread out, solidarity and health care could be in conflict. We are finding  a balance,” Francesco Chiavarin of Caritas Milan told EWTN.

South-South Governors Set to Float Regional Security Outfit

0

Governors of the South-South states have announced a plan to launch a regional security outfit that will secure the region.

Speaking during a meeting in Asaba on Thursday, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State said the move is necessary to address the security challenges facing the oil-rich states.

This is coming days after Houses of Assembly in the South-West passed the bill for the Operation Amotekun.

Okowa also said that he and his colleague in the region deliberated on the resuscitation of the Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Cross-Rivers, Edo and Delta (BRACED) Commission.

The Commission, according to the governors, will harmonise policies that would drive the economic cooperation and integration and set member states on a path for rapid economic growth and development.

Similarly, the governors called on the Federal Government to deduct the thirteen per cent derivation from the source before allocation to states.

“And we need to stress that in any allocation that is being done, 13 per cent derivation must first be taken out of the funds that come from oil revenue before the rest of the funds is shared out,” Okowa said.

On the outbreak of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), the governors called for a meeting of health commissioners in the region to map out preventive measures.

The upper legislative chamber okayed the request on Thursday amid objections from some senators.

While the matter was being debated, Enyinnaya Abaribe, minority leader, warned against considering all the recommendations on the loan at once.
He suggested that it should be done “item by item”, but Senate President Ahmad Lawan disagreed with him.

Subsequent debate on the matter forced the senate into an executive session during which it agreed to approve the request.
Buhari sent the loan request to the senate in 2019 though it was rejected by the previous senate under Bukola Saraki.

A misguided attempt by some criminal Boko Haram elements to attack the troops of 25 Task Force Brigade (Army Super Camp 2) located in Damboa LGA of Borno State has met a crushing defeat in the hands of the resilient troops.

CACHE OF ARMS AND AMMUNITION CAPTURED FROM THE CRIMINAL INSURGENTS BY TROOPS OF 25 TASK FORCE BRIGADE (ARMY SUPER CAMP 2) LOCATED IN DAMBOA LGA OF BORNO STATE AFTER AN ENCOUNTER AT DAMBOA ON 4 MARCH 2020.

In a statement, Media Coordinator, Nigerian Army Operations Centre, Col Aminu Iliyasu said the marauding criminals mounted on Gun Trucks and with a number of their foot soldiers attempted to infiltrate the troops’ location from three different fronts in the early hours of 4 March 2020. The troops responded swiftly, bringing to bear superior fire power against the criminals in conjunction with the Air Task Force Operation LAFIYA DOLE.

The encounter which lasted over an hour witnessed one of the most debilitating defeats of the Boko Haram criminals in a single encounter since the turn of the year. So far, 19 Boko Haram criminals’ corpses have been recovered while many more were observed escaping with various degrees of gunshot wounds by the troops who are on vigorous exploitation of their initial success along the criminals’ withdrawal route.

Interestingly, the gallant troops captured from the Boko Haram criminals 5 AK 47 Rifles, one General Purpose Machine Gun and one Rocket Propelled Gun tube. Regrettably, 3 valiant soldiers paid the supreme prize while 4 others were wounded in action. He further reassures the residents of Damboa and indeed the North East at large of the unflinching resolve of troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE in protecting the lives and properties of all law – abiding citizens.

Media Professionals Team Up to Tackle Fake News

0

Recognising the dangerous threat fake news pose to any society, and as one of the biggest challenges in the communication industry  threatening the authenticity of real news, communication scholars and media professionals have come together to identify means of ending the ugly trend.

The infiltration of fake news appears to be the fastest growing menace in the communication industry. The purveyors of hoax news don’t seem to be perturbed by the level of damage or the implications of their reports on the people involved and society at large.

The spread of fake news is likened to a virus intruding and destroying every fabric of the society, rendering havoc on the nation’s political, economic, tribal, religious and other aspects that make up a society. Its consequences are felt by the high and the low; its dangerous trend has tainted the image of the mighty and weak.  As the powerful lament the harmful effects of fake news on their lives, so were the downtrodden.  As the leaders and those in the position of authority are debunking fake news so also are the led and voiceless raising the alarm over deliberate use of their pictures and names for what they know absolutely nothing about.

Hence, February 21, 2020, the tempo of activities at the University of Ilorin Auditorium was unusually high for the 2020 edition of the Students-Veteran Interaction, an annual event where media professionals, scholars and other experts usually discuss trend in the communication industry with undergraduates.  It is an event where the field is literarily brought to the classroom and campus to enable students to create a nexus between the gown and town.

It was day many students had been waiting for. Lecturers, students from other departments, faculties and from other institutions have also been watching out for what the experts had gotten to say on the challenges of new media in the communication industry. They were also eager to explore new opportunities the new media could offer which are yet to be explored effectively.

To discuss the issues, media professionals from print, broadcast and Public Relations genres were carefully selected to speak on the theme of the event entitled: “Challenges of New media in the communication Industry.” The speakers were: Muritala Ayinla of the New Telegraph, Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television and Mr Emannuel of Nwachkwu of PR Redline.

Speaking on the danger of new media and its negative impacts in the communication industry, Muritala Ayinla said that despite the gains of new media and how it has revolutionised journalism, the ills of technological advancement are threatening the profession and society at large.

According to him, journalism globally is threatened today by the invasion of untrained and quacks that frequently engage in concocting and fabricating lies and present them in news format to the public using social media. He described fake news as a modified system of propaganda, which has metamorphosed into falsehood, describing those who engage in this act as information traffickers. “The advent of technology-induced fake news has tiptoed into all kinds of reports ranging from politics, business and other sectors causing confusion, condemnation, commendation as well as leading to hatred and wanton killing of innocent souls.

To tackle the scourge, Ayinla said: “The best way to deal with the problem is for trained journalists to dominate the social media with timely dissemination of factual account of events, fact-checking of every bit of information at their disposal before publishing or spreading such information.”

On his part, Mr. Nwachukwu of PR Redline tasked students to embrace positive use of the new media instead of just posing pictures or engaging in other mundane activities on it.

According to him, new media is an avenue to develop their skills and add value to themselves instead of being a passive participant.  He likened the new media to a market where all manner of distractions take place, adding that to actively use the technology, one must focus on the goal one intends to achieve.

Corroborating the speakers, a deputy bursar at the University, Mr Oba Abdulbarki charged the student to place passion above money and ensure ethics of the profession are upheld at all times, adding that every other thing will certainly come their way with ease. He added that it is always honourable and dignifying to make money through honest means rather than embarking on illicit means in the name of getting rich quickly.

On his part, the Head of Mass Communication Department, Dr Mustapha Kayode Lambe explained that essence of the students-veteran interaction, which is first of its kind in any school of communications studies, was to sensitise the students on what obtains after the classroom as well as enabling them to make informed decisions on what aspect of Mass Communication they want to specialise.

Dr Mustapha said the university has made free Wi-Fi available for students to enable them to carry out research and add value to themselves, adding that the department would continue to trail blaze innovations that will distinguish its graduates from other universities in Nigeria and globally.

Other communication scholars and professionals at the event were Associate Professor, Dr. A.L Azeez, the Deputy Dean, Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, Dr Patrick Udende; Dr. Saudat Abdulbaqi, Dr. Rasak Adisa, Dr. Oba La’aro, Dr. Abdulgafar Arikewuyo, Mrs Maryam Mustapha-Lambe and other academic and non-academic staff of the university.

Damboa Attack: Zulum Hails Military for Decisive Blow on Boko Haram

0

… Scores of insurgents killed,19 fighter vehicles seized

… ‘Taking the war to fleeing insurgents impressive

Borno Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has applauded the Nigerian military’s ground and air components for what he described as “decisive blow against Boko Haram” in the early hours of Wednesday, even when the insurgents ambushed from different directions in attempt to overrun Damboa town in southern part of the state.

Zulum said in a statement, he personally signed, ‎that he was particularly impressed that a combined team of soldiers of the army fighting on the ground and air, using fighter jets with the complementary efforts of the civilian JTF and vigilantes, not only killed scores of insurgents to prevent them from gaining grounds, but went the gallant step of taking the war to the insurgents even after they had fled.

“‎I find it compelling to salute our gallant soldiers of the Nigerian Army and Air Force, under operation Lafiya Dole for a decisive blow against Boko Haram insurgents on Wednesday morning in Damboa town. At about 6am yesterday, squads of the insurgents cleverly attacked Damboa from different directions, believing their ambush was going to succeed in overunning the town. Unfortunately for the insurgents, they met a far more determined and battle ready military. Soldiers of the army fought from the ground, the Air force quickly deployed fighter jets while volunteers in the Civilian JTF and Vigilantes complemented them.

At first stage, destroyed 13 fighting vehicles after killing scores of insurgents, who drove on them. What I find even more impressive, was that after the insurgents retreated due to defeat, the military did not stay back, they remobilized and took the war to the fleeing insurgents and in the process, killed more insurgents and destroyed six more fighting vehicles, bringing to 19, the number of vehicles destroyed. The insurgents were deprived of and we know what one vehicle used for fighting means to the Boko Haram, talk more of 19.

I salute our ground and air forces. I salute our volunteers who supported the military. I salute two volunteers, one each of the Civilian JTF and Vigilantes who paid the supreme price in trying to defend Borno and Nigeria. I commiserate with families of two women who died from stray bullets and wish those who sustained injuries a speedy recovery. I assure the people of Borno State that so much is being put in place in combined and very resolute effort, to bring an end to the Boko Haram insurgency. By the power of God, the insurgency will eventually end and we shall regain our enduring peace and prosperity” Zulum said in the statement.
